Focusing on my strengths & figuring out my options, says Jasprit Bumrah after India's loss to Australia in 1st T20

Back in his time, he knew a thing or two about bowling 'toe-crushers' and no wonder former Pakistani cricketer Wasim Akram is all praise for Jasprit Bumrah's ability to bowl the "most effective yorker" currently in world cricket.

Bumrah, who played a pivotal role in India's maiden Test series win on Australian soil, has been an 'x' factor in Virat Kohli's set-up.

"Jasprit Bumrah has the best and the most effective yorker among fast bowlers playing international cricket now," Akram told PTI during an interaction.

Arguably the greatest left-arm fast bowler to have ever played the game, Akram believes that Bumrah will make a difference during death overs at this year's World Cup with his 'go to ball'.

"Bumrah has an exceptional action, very different from other fast bowlers and yet he gets the ball to swing and also move off the deck at good pace," Akram said.

"But what makes Bumrah special is his ability to bowl yorkers on a regular basis. Also yorker is not just used for ODIs but for Test matches too as me and Waqar did in our times," the Sultan of Swing said.

A lot of it Akram believes could be attributed to tennis ball cricket, which helps aspiring bowlers perfect their yorkers.

"If you see, whether it's me coming from Pakistan or Bumrah coming from India, we are all products of tennis ball cricket," said Akram, who is a mentor in the upcoming 10PL tennis ball tournament in UAE.

"When you play gully cricket with buildings on both sides and the batsman being deprived of playing cross batted shots on both sides, they are forced to play straight then.&nbsp;

"And then you start pitching it up and in the process learn to bowl at the base and prevent the batsman from going down the ground. You will see a lot of yorkers in 10PL," said Akram.

He was all praise for India, which became the first country from Asia to win a Test series in Australia.

"It's a huge achievement to win a Test series in Australia. I don't subscribe to the view that this is a weakened Australian side. Let's not take away any credit from Virat and his boys. The kind of consistency they have shown is indeed a big deal," said Akram.

Whenever a young talent is discovered in Pakistan, they start comparing him with Kohli, only to fade away like an Umar Akmal.

So why do potential 'Kohli's' of Pakistan fall off the radar, Akram said: "Had we known what the problem is, wouldn't we have addressed the issue?"

"On a serious note, it is Virat's mindset that makes all the difference. When I mean mindset, it also includes off the field preparation also."

The Indian captain's awareness is in a different league, feels Akram.

"Awareness about all the worldly things, what needs to be done to become the best in the world and it's not just about having the perfect technique. It is about having a perfect mindset. He is one of the most popular cricketer in Pakistan," said the owner of 900 plus international wickets.

Akram, who has been the face of 10PL in 2018, expects the tournament to grow with passage of time.

"The organisers have kept 250,000 Dirham (USD 68,00,000) prize money for this tennis ball tournament where as back in 1992, we got USD 40,000 for winning World Cup," Akram said.

Jasprit Bumrah is India's resident yorker specialist but in his absence, the team management has entrusted the task of firing in the toe-crushers on his new-ball partner Bhuvneshwar Kumar.

Bhuvneshwar was seen bowling in the nets keeping a shoe at the base of the stumps in order to perfect his yorker ahead of the second ODI against Australia here Tuesday.

The UP seamer, who rarely bowls yorkers like Bumrah, is trying to add the delivery in his repertoire in order to avoid getting hit in the slog overs. &nbsp;

"The skills (required to bowl yorkers) are also different. I was practising bowling yorkers at the shoes, and I was practising for the end (slog) overs to take wickets or block some runs," Bhuvneshwar told media persons here.

"This (keeping shoes on the pitch) is something that I have been doing for some time," he added.&nbsp;

The seamer said that he wasn't practising yorkers as he wasn't playing Test matches and also because the delivery is rarely used in longest format.

"I didn't practice that for almost a month now because in Tests, we hardly needed that. And I didn't play a match. Going into an ODI or T20I series, you need that (yorker) thing. So I was practising that," he said.

The yorker becomes all the more necessary in the death as blockhole deliveries or slower ones work with old balls (two new balls being used in ODIs).

"The skills needed are totally different (with new and old balls). You are trying to swing the new-ball and take wickets. With the old ball, you are looking to bowl yorkers or slower balls. But they are both difficult.&nbsp;

"When you are bowling with a new-ball, there are only two fielders outside the circle. With the old-ball, batsmen don't care how many guys are outside the circle."

The 25-year-old right-arm quick with an unorthodox rigid action took 9-86 in the Melbourne Test against Australia, including a career-best 6-33 in the first innings.

In his first year of Test cricket he has claimed three five-wicket hauls overseas -- in South Africa, England and now Australia, where his exploits were central to India's 137-run win.&nbsp;

"Credit has to go to the bowlers. I think they have been outstanding, especially Jasprit. The way he bowled in this Test match was outstanding," said Kohli after win gave India a 2-1 lead in the four-Test series.

"The mindset he has at the moment is what separates him from anyone else in the world right now.

"He looks at a pitch and he doesn't think it's a hard toil, he thinks wickets, he thinks how can I get a breakthrough for the team.

BCCI announces new pay contracts; MS Dhoni not in top group, Mohammed Shami gets nothing

Indian bowlers continued their stellar show as Jasprit Bumrah restricted South Africa&#39;s lead to a bare minimum with his maiden five-wicket haul, keeping the visitors in the contest after an engaging second day&#39;s play in the third and final cricket Test.&nbsp;

In reply to India&#39;s 187, South Africa didn&#39;t fare any better being all-out for 194 in 65.5 overs with their lead being an insignificant seven runs. The Indian top-order showed more application as they were 49 for 1 at stumps with an overall lead of 42 runs.

Murali Vijay (13 batting, 49 balls) was in the company of KL Rahul (16 batting, 38 balls). The team management wanted to shield Rahul from the new ball bowlers by sending Parthiv Patel (16) to open the innings but the plan didn&#39;t work as he quickly removed by Vernon Philander.

Indian cricket team, who&nbsp;is on the tour of South Africa to play three test matches, six One Day Internationals and three T20 Internationals, have already lost the Test series by 2-0.&nbsp;

Despite two consecutive loss to Proteas, few Indian players&nbsp;skipped a day of the training session for a small jaunt to the jungle safari in South Africa.&nbsp;

Although their location is not certain,&nbsp;but&nbsp;as per media reports, they went to Mabula game reserve which is located just two-and-a-half hours&#39; drive from Johannesburg. It is said to be one of South Africa&rsquo;s finest private game reserves, which is owned by absconding Indian businessmen Vijay Mallya.

He owns 99.5 per cent stake in the 25,000-acre game reserve, for which he paid $6 million.

Kohli hit a masterly 153 in India`s first innings of 307 to stay in touch in Centurion, even though South Africa stretched 28-run first innings lead to 118 by scoring 90 for two in their second spell at-bat on a storm-shortened afternoon.

India is slightly behind going into day four despite Kohli`s innings and two early wickets from opening bowler Jasprit Bumrah, but they could just feel that they were still in with a chance of levelling the three-match series following South Africa`s 72-run win in the first Test in Cape Town.

Kohli had lamented India`s poor batting in Cape Town and he could not have provided a better demonstration of how to handle South Africa`s four-pronged pace attack.

In a model of concentration, good judgement and occasional breathtaking strokes, Kohli batted for 380 minutes, faced 217 balls and hit 15 fours. It was his 21st Test century to go along with 15 half-centuries, the best conversion rate since Don Bradman of any batsman who has passed 50 more than 30 times.

He was last man out when he was caught in the deep off Morne Morkel, hitting to one of eight fielders on the boundary as he tried to squeeze some extra runs with his tailenders having shown they were ill-equipped to handle fast bowlers wielding the second new ball.

Morkel finished with four for 60, taking the last three wickets, including that of Ishant Sharma, who could only fend a vicious bouncer to short leg.

Kohli received minimal support from his team-mates, with Murali Vijay (46) and Ravichandran Ashwin (38) the only other batsmen to reach the twenties.

Ashwin helped Kohli add 71 off 87 balls for the seventh wicket but he lived dangerously after being peppered by short-pitched balls from Kagiso Rabada at the start of his innings.

Mumbai Indians entered the final of the ongoing Indian Premier league (IPL) with a convincing six-wicket win over Kolkata Knight Riders here tonight.

Opting to field after Rohit Sharma won the toss, Mumbai bowled out Kolkata for a paltry 107 in 18.5 overs, and then chased down the target with 33 balls to spare at the Chinnaswamy Stadium.

Leg-spinner Karn Sharma was the star performer with the ball for Mumbai, returning excellent figures of 4/16 - the joint best effort by a spinner in an IPL knockout game, while Jasprit Bumrah provided fine support to pick 3/7 in three overs.

Opting to field after Rohit Sharma won the toss, Mumbai bowled out Kolkata for a paltry 107 in 18.5 overs, and then chased down the target with 33 balls to spare at the Chinnaswamy Stadium. Leg-spinner Karn Sharma was the star performer with the ball for Mumbai, returning excellent figures of 4/16 - the joint best effort by a spinner in an IPL knockout game, while Jasprit Bumrah provided fine support to pick 3/7 in three overs. Krunal Pandya showed maturity, finishing as Mumbai's top scorer with 45 off 30 balls, while Rohit contributed 26. Earlier, KKR off were to a disastrous start and were reeling at 31 for five at one stage, with Sharma and Bumrah doing the bulk of damage. A 56-run partnership ensued between Suryakumar Kumar (31) and Ishank Jaggi (28), before the Mumbai bowlers struck again. Mumbai Indians beat KKR by 6 wickets, enter IPL final

Mandeep Singh blasted a quick-fire unbeaten half-century as India crushed Zimbabwe by 10 wickets to level the Twenty20 series on Monday. 
 
The result sets up a series decider in the third and final game that will also be played at the Harare Sports Club on Wednesday. 
 
Zimbabwe won the toss and elected to bat, but could only muster 99 for nine in their 20 overs as the Indian bowlers strangled the run-rate. 
 
The tourists made short work of their reply, racing to their victory target off 13.1 overs as Mandeep Singh (52 from 40 balls) and fellow opener Lokesh Rahul (47 from 40 balls) put on a century stand. 
 
All the Zimbabwe batsmen struggled to score quick runs in their innings with none managing more than a run a ball. Peter Moor (31 from 32 balls) was the only one to muster any sort of resistance. 
 
Debutant seamer Barinder Sran took for wickets to lead the Indian charge, while fellow paceman Jasprit Bumrah picked up three wickets in his four overs. 
 
India also handed a debut to seamer Dhawal Kulkarni, though he was by far the most expensive of the bowlers as his one wicket cost 32 runs.
