Japan Airlines said its systems were up and running again after a cyberattack on Thursday caused delays to domestic and international flights.
"We have identified the cause and scope of the malfunction, and the system has been restored," said the airline, Japan's second biggest after All Nippon Airways (ANA).
The "large data attack" did not leak any customer information and safety was unaffected, Japan Airlines (JAL) said in a post on social media platform X.&nbsp;
Japanese media said it may have been a so-called DDoS attack aimed at overwhelming and disrupting a website or server.
Ticket sales for domestic and international flights departing on Thursday were suspended during the incident but have now resumed, JAL said.
Although the cyberattack did not cause major disruption, the airline earlier said that 24 domestic flights had been delayed by more than half an hour.
Problems with the carrier's baggage check-in system caused delays at several Japanese airports, local media said.
JAL shares fell as much as 2.5 per cent in morning trade after the news emerged, before recovering. Its stocks were down 0.2 per cent in the afternoon.

<h2>'Human error'</h2>
Separately, a transport ministry committee tasked with probing a fatal January 2024 collision involving a JAL passenger jet released an interim report on Wednesday blaming human error for the incident that killed five people.
The collision at Tokyo's Haneda Airport was with a coast guard plane carrying six crew members &ndash; of whom five were killed &ndash; that was on a mission to deliver relief supplies to a quake-hit central region of Japan.
According to the report, the smaller plane's pilot mistook an air traffic control officer's instructions to mean authorisation had been given to enter the runway.
The captain was also "in a hurry" at the time because the coast guard plane's departure was 40 minutes behind schedule, the report said.
The traffic controller failed to notice the plane had intruded onto the runway, oblivious even to an alarm system warning against its presence.

The suspect has been identified as a 55-year-old American citizen, but his name was not revealed by the authorities. The man was handed over to local police soon after the plane touched down. The man was arrested on assault charges.

"While flying over the Pacific Ocean, a passenger who was heavily intoxicated bit the arm of a female cabin attendant prompting the plane to return to Tokyo Haneda airport," a spokesperson for All Nippon Airways was quoted as saying by NBC News Thursday (Jan 18).

According to local media, the man told police that he had taken sleeping pills and didn’t remember exactly what transpired on the flight. The plane had 159 passengers onboard when the incident happened and was flying over the Pacific Ocean.

It is the second incident involving All Nippon Airways within days. On Saturday (Jan 13), a domestic ANA flight had to return after a crack was discovered in the window of the cockpit. For the first time in the history of a Japanese global airline called Japan Airlines, a woman has been selected as its next president. What’s more uplifting is that the airline president-elect, Mitsuko Tottori, joined the flag carrier as a flight attendant in 1985 and moved up the rungs of her career ladder to reach the leadership role based on merit.

The announcement came on Thursday from Japan Airlines, as Tottori will replace Yuji Akasaka as president on April 1. While Akaska will replace Yoshiharu Ueki as chairman, the airline’s most senior position.

Tottori joined Japan Airlines in April 1985 and in May 2015; she was promoted to her first leadership role as the Senior Director of Cabin Attendants Office.&nbsp;

In April 2022, she became the Managing Executive Officer and Senior Vice President of the cabin Attendants Division of the Company.

Last year in June, she was chosen as the Representative Director and Senior Managing Executive Officer of the Company.

Talking about her illustrious career at the company, Japan Airlines said on its website that Tottori “gained a high level of insight and field experience in safe flight operations and service through her career as a cabin attendant and through her work with Corporate Safety &amp; Security.”

It is very rare in Japan for women to lead major companies. However, the&nbsp;government is working in that direction&nbsp;by urging businesses to appoint at least one woman as an executive by 2025.&nbsp;

Japan's civil aviation bureau's official, while speaking to the reporters, said that there was no indication regarding any permission granted to the Coast Guard aircraft to take off in those transcripts.

As per the turboprop plane's captain, he had received permission to enter the runway, said a Coast Guard official, while accepting that no such indication was present in the transcripts. 
 
"The transport ministry is submitting objective material and will fully cooperate with the ... investigation to ensure we work together to take all possible safety measures to prevent a recurrence," said Transport Minister Tetsuo Saito, while speaking to reporters. 
 
The authorities said that the JTSB recovered the voice recorder present inside the Coast Guard aircraft. The minister said that the incident is “still being investigated” and said that the next step will be to listen to the audio recordings of the conversation which took place between the flight control tower and the Coast Guard pilot.

The pilots, as the Japan Airlines plane burst into flames, had no "visual contact" with the other aircraft with which it collided, said the airlines on Thursday (Jan 4). 
 
The three pilots were not able to see the fire while sitting inside the cockpit when it first broke out and the cabin crew informed them, said a JAL spokesman, while speaking to AFP.

All 367 passengers, including eight children, and 12 crew members onboard the Airbus A350 were successfully evacuated according to NHK and Kyodo News. The evacuation unfolded after the JAL aircraft collided with the Coast Guard plane while de-accelerating after landing.

For passengers travelling by Japan's flagship carrier, their vacations can now include the option to rent a selection of clothes. As per a BBC report, they can choose various options, including clothing type, season, style, and pickup and return dates.&nbsp;

Users will receive their selected clothes at their hotel upon arrival. This service will only cost them about $34 to $48 for the rental period.

The service, called 'Any Wear, Anywhere,' started in July of this year and will run till August 2024.

Miho Moriya, who works for Sumitomo, the Japanese company handling reservations, deliveries, and laundering, came up with the idea. She says that what inspired her to come with this was her own dread about luggage.

"I love travelling and I've been to many foreign countries, but I've always dreaded dragging around luggage or doing laundry abroad," she said.

Moriya says it took "many tries" to find an airline that would support her idea, and once it got approved, the implementation was pushed back due to the pandemic. Over time, she hopes to expand this service to other airlines within the OneWorld Alliance and eventually worldwide, contributing to sustainable travel practices.

Clothes under the Any wear, Anywhere service are either pre-owned or sourced from company overstock. Furthermore, they will be cleaned and reused, which helps make the service sustainable.

Additionally, with travellers leaving their luggage at home, the aircraft will be lighter and thus help save on fuel and emissions.

This initiative aims to reduce carbon emissions by lowering the weight carried on JAL's aeroplanes. It is estimated that saving about 22 pounds (10 kg) in luggage equates to approximately 16.5 pounds (7.5 kg) saved in emissions.

The wardrobe options include three sizes (small, medium, and large) with various styles, ranging from smart to smart casual and mixed.

Prices for a set of rented clothes range from ¥4,000 to ¥7,000 (approximately 28.13&nbsp;US$&nbsp;to 49.22&nbsp;US$). For example, during the summer months, women can select linen shirts, trousers, and ankle-length skirts, with a combination of five tops and three bottoms costing ¥5,000 (approximately 35.16&nbsp;US$). Japan Airlines apologised on Thursday after one of its co-pilots was arrested in London for being drunk, delaying its Tokyo-bound flight, a day after another Japanese carrier reported delays blamed on a hung-over pilot.

JAL executives told reporters that the co-pilot cleared an in-house breath test but aroused the suspicion of a bus driver taking him to the plane from Heathrow airport on Sunday.

After a second breath test before takeoff showed that he had consumed "excessive alcohol", the co-pilot was arrested by British police and required to undergo a blood test which confirmed those results, the company said in a press release.

"We are certain (the in-house breath test) wasn't conducted properly," &nbsp;Muneaki Kitahara, JAL's head of communications, told a press conference.

The plane departed London after a delay of one hour and 9 minutes.&nbsp;

"The company sincerely apologises to the passengers and to all affected by the employee's actions," JAL said in the press release.

The incident comes only a day after All Nippon Airways revealed a hung-over pilot had caused multiple flight delays.

The male pilot in his 40s called in sick after a night of drinking on the remote resort island of Ishigaki in southern Okinawa prefecture, the company said.

The last-minute sickie forced the airline to delay five flights linking Okinawa island and smaller regional islands, affecting 619 passengers.

Following the two incidents, the transport ministry urged airline companies to strictly comply with rules on drinking.
