The entire police of Brasilia will be deployed for Brazilian president-elect Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva's inauguration on Sunday (January 1), after a man was arrested for a bomb plot hoping to sow "chaos" in the country, according to an official on Tuesday.&nbsp;

Last Saturday, the Brazilian Police arrested the man George Washington de Oliveira Sousa for allegedly placing explosives in a fuel truck near Brasilia's airport. Oliveira Sousa is a supporter of the country's outgoing president Jair Bolsonaro. He was arrested after the truck's driver found the device.&nbsp;

Robson Candido, the civil police general delegate of Brasilia, told reporters that although there was an attempt to activate the device, it did not explode.&nbsp;

Later, Oliveira Sousa confessed to the authorities that the bomb was part of a plan to ''start chaos'' and ''prevent the establishment of communism in Brazil.''

Speaking to reporters on Monday, Lula da Silva's future security minister Flavio Dino said that on Sunday "there will be a mobilisation of 100 per cent of the police forces of the Federal District (of Brasilia) to ensure the safety not only of the president but also of foreign delegations and the public," news agency AFP reported.&nbsp;

Dino assured that the inauguration event will be safe and peaceful and encouraged citizens to turn out to celebrate.&nbsp;

Dino also said there was no change to the plans for the ceremony, in response to speculation that Lula might do the inauguration parade in a closed vehicle instead of the traditional vintage convertible, AFP reported.&nbsp;

In the general election in October, Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva defeated Jair Bolsonaro with 50.9 per cent of the vote. After the results were out, supporters of Bolsonaro blocked roads and demonstrated outside military barracks demanding that the armed forces prevent Lula's inauguration.&nbsp;

Brazil: Security beefed up for Lula's swearing-in on Jan 1 after bomb threat

A Brazilian man arrested for attempting to detonate an explosive device ahead of the inauguration of President-elect Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva was influenced by President Jair Bolsonaro’s call to arms, Reuters reported quoting a copy of his police testimony.

The man, identified as George Washington de Oliveira Sousa, was arrested on Saturday after the police managed to foil his plans to set off bombs in protest against Brazil's election result.

The suspect’s lawyer, Wallison dos Reis Pereira, said he had confessed and was cooperating with police.

But Sousa’s current lawyer Jorge Chediak said he had yet to speak with Sousa, but said his confession to police was full of "contradictions."

According to Reuters news agency, Sousa, 54, during his police questioning admitted that he was inspired by Bolsonaro’s false claim that the elections were rigged.

Before joining an encampment of pro-Bolsonaro election-deniers, Sousa was working at a gas station.

He joined the election-deniers, who were calling for a coup. "My trip to Brasilia was so I could join the protests in front of the army headquarters and wait for the armed forces to authorize me to take up arms and destroy communism," he said, according to the copy of his testimony.

In October last year, after becoming a registered gun-owner, he joined a called the CAC, which had nearly 700,000 people since Bolsonaro was elected in 2018 and began loosening gun laws.

Sousa said he had invested nearly 160,000 reais ($30,800) since then to grow his arsenal.

"What motivated me to buy the guns were the words of President Bolsonaro, who always emphasized the importance of civilians being armed by saying, 'An armed population will never be enslaved,'" Sousa purportedly said.

Meanwhile, the incoming Justice Minister, Flavio Dino, on Monday said that security has been beefed up for Sunday's inauguration of Lula da Silva.

"We're not talking about a lone wolf," Dino said of Sousa. "There are powerful people behind this and the police will investigate. We won't allow political terrorism in Brazil."

Meanwhile, some could not be bothered by Neymar's political beliefs.

"Who cares if he supports Bolsonaro? He's a great player. I'm a huge fan, I love him. I'm rooting for him to recover," said another vendor at Rio's iconic Copacabana beach.&nbsp;

Unlike other football players, Neymar has openly endorsed Bolsonaro after the latter supported him when rape accusations were hurled the footballer's way.&nbsp;

"Without knowing us personally, (Bolsonaro) showed affection and put his chest and face forward believing in me and now I am doing the same," Neymar said at the time.&nbsp;

"I positioned myself and never said it, but in the most difficult moment of my life the president was the first one who publicly said he would be by my side," he added.&nbsp;

This is also in line with one of Lula’s campaign promises which includes protecting the Amazon rainforest as well as restoring Brazil’s leadership on climate change.&nbsp;

Hoffman said that Lula was invited by the Governor of Amapa state, Waldez Goes, “who is coordinating the consortium of Amazon governors, to accompany them.” He added that while the president-elect will go, they do not have the dates yet. Furthermore, Lula has reportedly been invited by Egypt's President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi to attend the summit who also congratulated him on his election victory.&nbsp;

She added that by attending COP27 as the president-elect, Lula will send a strong message of climate change being a priority in Brazil. Notably, Lula will not be attending as a part of Brazil's official government delegation since he will assume the presidency on January 1.&nbsp;

"There was a vibe between us. I turned around. 'Can I come in your house?' I went inside. There were 15 or 20 girls (in the house), all Venezuelans aged 14, 15, getting ready on a Saturday. Why? To earn a living," he said during a YouTube interview according to a report by AFP.

While the story was intended to compare the situation in Brazil with that of the struggling Venezuela, the political opponents were quick to call the comments “depraved” and within a day of the interview, #Bolsonaropedofilo (Bolsonaro pedophile) started trending on Twitter.

Bolsonaro called the attack "the most terrible of my life” and tendered an unconditional apology.

Meanwhile, members of Bolsonaro’s campaign told Reuters that the former president’s chances of a re-election took a hit following the debates between the candidates. Bolsonaro was targeted for his previous comments on various controversial issues and that took a toll on his popularity.

As the October 30, Brazillian presidential runoff draws closer far-right incumbent President Jair Bolsonaro during an interview commented that if Donald Trump was still the US President he could've averted the Russia-Ukraine war that has been on for more than seven months now.

Speaking to the news magazine Veja, Bolsonaro also said that he had a good in-person meeting with Trump's successor Joe Biden. However, he asserted that if his close ally Trump was still in office, many issues currently bedevilling the world could've been avoided.

Bolsonaro and Trump have long been allies, with the former an ardent admirer of the latter. Even when Trump saw his international popularity fall after the fallout of the 2020 US election, Jair Bolsonaro remained a fan. He was also among the last world leaders to recognise Joe Biden's victory, echoing Trump's US electoral fraud allegations till the end.

While talking to Veja he once again kept up his unfounded questioning of Brazil's electronic voting system, while declining to give a clear answer on whether he would accept the results if he lost in the second round.&nbsp;

"There's a feeling in public opinion that there was something dodgy," he said adding "I'm always worried."

Following a trend in recent years of underestimating voter support for Brexit and Donald Trump, opinion polls in Brazil were way off the mark for Sunday's first round of presidential elections.

Incumbent Jair Bolsonaro and many of his far-right allies mustered results much better than pollsters had predicted, catching analysts off guard and shocking supporters of his leftist rival Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva.

"The biggest loser (of Sunday's election) are all the polls," Latin America analyst Michael Shifter of the Inter-American Dialogue think tank told AFP.

What were the poll predictions?

Lula amassed 48 per cent of the votes cast on Sunday -- within the margin of error of plus or minus two percentage points worked in by pollsters Datafolha and Ipec.

Both had put Lula within arm's reach of taking the election in the first round -- with a prediction of 50 per cent of valid votes cast by Datafolha, and 51 per cent by Ipec.

Bolsonaro's result came completely out of left field. He managed 43 per cent of votes compared to 36 per cent predicted by Datafolha.

Instead of a predicted 14-point handicap, he lagged Lula by only five points, or about six million votes.

There was a similar trend for some of Bolsonaro's rightwing allies.

Rio de Janeiro Governor Claudio Castro won reelection in the first round with 58 per cent of votes compared to polling expectations of 44 to 47 per cent.

And in Sao Paulo, Tarcisio de Freitas entered the gubernatorial runoff race in the lead with 42 per cent -- 11 points higher than he had been polled.

What went wrong?

Analysts are scratching their heads: was it a last-minute Bolsonaro surge among undecided or opposition voters, or is it that polling institutes with a hitherto reliable reputation have somehow lost the ability to accurately predict voter intention?

"We don't know if Bolsonaro made real advances or whether he already had this support" that polls failed to capture, Leandro Gabiati, director of the Dominium consultancy, told AFP.

According to Mayra Goulart of the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro, there has been an "information blackout" in Brazil due to a pandemic-induced, two-year delay in the population census, held every 10 years.

This may have affected the accuracy of pollsters' population sampling especially in influential segments such as evangelicals -- a growing and right-leaning section of Brazilian society.

"It is likely that the 2022 census will correct some of these inconsistencies for future elections," said Guilherme Casaroes, a political scientist at the Getulio Vargas Foundation.

Consequences

"It will definitely hurt the credibility of analysis" by the media and experts such as himself, said Leonardo Paz, Brazil consultant for the International Crisis Group think tank.

"Right now it is more difficult to make analysis because... the numbers are not credible anymore."

The discrepancy between the prediction and Sunday's outcome posed a "big problem for the (polling) institutes and for democracy itself," added Dominium's Gabiati.

"Polls are an important part of the electoral process and it is terrible for democracy that this aspect is called into question."

Bolsonaro has long sought to cast doubt on the accuracy of polls, which he claims work for the left, and could now use this "proof" to further whip up anti-Lula sentiment ahead of the all-important October 30 presidential runoff.

"We defeated the opinion polls' lie," he crowed on Sunday.

For Goulart, this could bolster the Bolsonaro-led negationist discourse.

"Calling into question electoral polls in a context of far-right populism is also to call into question science and reliable sources of information, including the media," she said.

Bolsonaro's congressman son Eduardo said Monday he would collect signatures to open a parliamentary committee investigation into polling companies over the discrepancies.

"Polling agencies will have to reinvent themselves," said Casaroes.

Brazilian football star on Wednesday thanked Bolsonaro for visiting the player's charitable children's foundation and got swept up in the nation's presidential election campaign.&nbsp;

Neymar shared a video on the social media platform after Bolsonaro visited the Neymar Jr. Institute, which is a charitable foundation the football star founded in 2014.&nbsp;

Neymar Jr. Institute runs various programmes related to education, culture and sports for 3,000 underprivileged children in the southeastern city of Praia Grande. It is the place where Neymar also grew up.&nbsp;

Bolsonaro stated that the 161.9 pence per litre cost of the fuel was 'practically double the average of many Brazilian states'. Few people know his name, but as President Jair Bolsonaro's ever-present sign-language interpreter, Fabiano Guimaraes is a familiar face to millions of Brazilians -- fame he now hopes will help him win a seat in Congress.

After three years at Bolsonaro's side, putting the president's words into Brazilian Sign Language, Guimaraes is jumping into politics himself, running in the October elections to represent Brasilia in the lower house as a member of the Bolsonaro-allied Republicanos party.

Guimaraes, 42, who is not deaf himself, started learning sign language at 18, when a pastor at the Evangelical church he attended in the northern suburbs of Rio de Janeiro paid for him to take a course.

He found he had a knack for "libras," as sign language is known in Brazil, and started serving as an interpreter for the church's deaf attendees.

But that was nothing compared to what he calls the "technical challenge" of interpreting for the far-right president, whose trademark linguistic sauce is heavy on folksy style, anti-establishment diatribes and occasional obscenities.

'You can talk?

Guimaraes has at times gone viral on social media for his rapid-fire gesticulations at Bolsonaro's side, especially during the weekly Facebook live videos where the president, who is up for reelection in October, speaks directly to his base.

In one, Guimaraes gestures effusively with an exasperated face mirroring Bolsonaro's own as the president unleashes a torrent of swear words aimed at his critics.

In another, he discreetly whispers the name of Agriculture Minister Marcos Montes when Bolsonaro forgets it.

"You can talk?" Bolsonaro asks him, surprised.

"I can talk!" he answers, and both burst out laughing.

"Appearing at the president's side has put me in the spotlight," Guimaraes, a diminutive man with a receding hairline and an animated face, told AFP in an interview at his home in Brasilia, where a cup with Bolsonaro's image is proudly displayed along with a carved wood sign reading "Jesus."

"I'm just a regular person who got where I am because God brought me here, improbably enough," he says.

'Democratic service'

Bolsonaro has prominently featured interpreters at his public appearances from day one.

At his presidential inauguration in 2019, his wife, Michelle, who is fluent in sign language, gave a speech in it.

Guimaraes, a Portuguese and Spanish teacher by training, joined the president's sign language team later that year, after taking the official exam for what he thought would be an interpreting job at the education ministry.

Instead, he was assigned to the presidential palace.

He says the job for him is a "democratic service."

"I bring the deaf community into the national political debate," he adds.

"Having an interpreter by the president's side, the two languages (speech and sign language) treated with equal importance, has given tremendous visibility to the deaf community in Brazil" -- about 10 million people in this country of 213 million.

Guimaraes is a big fan of Bolsonaro and his communication style.

The president "uses informal, colloquial language, but full of content," he says.

"It speaks to the Brazilian people. He brings them into the political debate. My mother-in-law, who left school after fourth grade, always said, 'The only politician I can understand is Bolsonaro.'"

He also admires the first lady, a fellow Evangelical Christian who has played a key role in encouraging him to run for Congress.

Guimaraes is campaigning on a platform of social inclusion and defense of family values.

He says he embraces both Bolsonaro's mottos of "God, nation, family and freedom" and the first lady's support of "sensitivity and inclusion."

"I want to make the connection between both those agendas," he says.

"A lot of times people ask, 'Who's Fabiano?'"

So he will appear on the ballot on October 2 as "Fabiano, Bolsonaro's interpreter" -- a practice allowed under Brazilian election law.
