<p>Taking into account other factors, the researchers looked into how many liveborn children in each group were diagnosed with a major heart defect or with a serious heart defect. This included finding the condition either in the womb or in the first year of life.</p>

<p>It was analysed keeping in mind things like the child's year of birth, country of birth, mother's age at delivery, if the mother smoked during pregnancy, or if the mother had diabetes or heart defects were taken into account.</p>

<p>They found heart defects to be more common in babies born through IVF and other such methods, with the problem being around 36 per cent more common compared to babies naturally conceived.</p>

<p>In the case of twin or multiple birth babies, a major heart defect was likely to pose a problem more than others, at 2.47 and 1.15 per cent, respectively.</p>

<p>According to MIT’s Technology Review, engineers in Barcelona, Spain developed and designed the sperm-injecting robot which was sent to New York City's New Hope Fertility Center for the test. After assembling the robot, one of the engineers who had no experience in fertility medicine used a Sony PlayStation 5 controller to penetrate a human egg using a mechanised needle - dropping off a single sperm cell in the process successfully.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Cumulatively, the robot managed to fertilise more than a dozen eggs which developed into healthy embryos and have now been born as two baby girls, with the scientists claiming them as the first infants born after fertilisation by a 'robot'.</p>

<p>Australian people conceived through donor sperm or egg may soon have greater access to their genetic history. The Queensland government, as per a Guardian report, has accepted a new set of recommendations in this regard. The recommendations were presented in response to a parliamentary inquiry on the issue and the government has given its in-principal support, the paper reported. Under this, the so-called donor-conceived children, once they attain the age of 18, will legally be provided with the right to know the identity of the donor and their genetic siblings, if any.</p>

<p>For this to work, as per the government, Queensland will have to establish a central donor conception register. This will probably involve developing IT systems and digitising historical records.</p>

<p>The UK study analysed the age of both men and women in over 18,000 IVF and ICSI cycles. The study found a drop in childbirth when the parental age was between 40 and 44 to 27 per cent compared to 32 per cent when the parents were under 35.</p>

<p>A couple in Mumbai has petitioned the Bombay High Court to allow them to complete the surrogacy procedure which had begun before the new Assisted Reproductive Technology (ART) Act and Surrogacy Act came into effect.</p>

<p>The new laws were brought in earlier this year in January to prevent the sale of embryos. The couple said both their children had died and the woman was told by doctors that she wouldn't be able to naturally bear children.</p>

<p>Several months later, a DNA test revealed the girl born in September 2019 was not related to either of them, and they had actually been raising another couple's child.</p>

<p>According to lawyers in Los Angeles, two laboratories connected by the same doctor switched the embryos of two couples and implanted them in the wrong mothers.</p>

<p>Thousands gathered in Paris on Sunday to protest the government's plan to let single women and lesbians become pregnant with fertility treatments, the country's first major social reform since France legalised gay marriage in 2013.</p>

<p>Waving red and green flags, a crowd marched from the French Senate toward the monolithic Tour Montparnasse skyscraper, chanting "Liberty, Equality, Paternity" -&nbsp;a play on the French motto which ends with "Fraternity."</p>

<p>Organisers said they hoped 100,000 will turn out against the law, which was approved by the lower house of parliament last month, but officials said they were expecting 10,000 to 20,000 people.</p>

<p>"For two years now our attempts at dialogue have gone nowhere... the street is the only place left for us to be heard," Ludovine de la Rochere, president of the Protest for Everyone association, told journalists Sunday.</p>

<p>Many women have instead been forced to go abroad for such treatments, and French courts often refuse to recognise the second mother's maternity rights in the case of same-sex couples.</p>

<p>Under the proposed law, France's healthcare system would cover the cost of the procedure for all women under 43.</p>

<p>It would also allow children conceived with donated sperm to find out the donor's identity when they turn 18, a change from the country's strict donor anonymity protections.</p>

<p>If approved, the law would bring French legislation in line with other European nations including Britain, Spain, Portugal, the Netherlands, Ireland, Belgium and Scandinavian countries, which authorise medically assisted procreation for all women.</p>

<p>Opponents say the law deprives children of a necessary paternal figure and threatens a traditional family structure, and would open the door to legalising surrogacy, including for gay men.</p>

<p>"The family, with a mother and a father, is an ecosystem that needs protecting," said Christian Kersabiec, 68, who came to the march Sunday from Vannes in Brittany, denouncing "this new society where they play the sorcerer's apprentice."</p>

<p>But analysts say <a href="https://www.wionews.com/world/frances-political-class-unites-to-honour-jacques-chirac-at-funeral-service-252898">French society</a> has become more accepting of non-traditional families since the gay marriage law was passed in 2013.</p>

<p>Last week, National Assembly lawmakers voted to make it easier for parents who have children via a surrogate mother abroad, in countries where it is legal, to have them officially recognised in France -- though Macron's government has said it opposes the move.</p>

<p>And an Ifop poll in September found that 68 per cent approved IVF and other medically assisted procreation (MAP) for single women, and 65 per cent for lesbian couples.</p>

<p>"It's hard to predict what will happen Sunday but public opinion is much less divided on MAP than on gay marriage," Frederic Dabi, an Ifop director, told AFP.</p>

<p>Gerard Larcher, the rightwing president of the Senate who protested against the gay marriage law six years ago, is not expected to attend the rally Sunday.</p>

<p>"The people demonstrating will be doing it more out of moral conviction, a sense of duty, rather than to try to make the government back down," said Yann Raison de Cleuziou, a sociologist who has studied the conservative Catholic movement against the family reforms.</p>

Thousands protest French IVF law for lesbians, single women

<p>TV producer Ekta Kapoor took to Instagram on Thursday evening to confirm the birth of her son. &nbsp;Born through surrogacy, <a href="http://www.wionews.com/entertainment/ekta-kapoor-welcomes-baby-boy-via-surrogacy-194001">the baby arrived on January 27th</a> and is yet to be brought home. The baby is healthy and will soon be home with his mother.&nbsp;</p>
