<p>Days after Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu pushed through new legislation that curbs judicial review by the country's apex court of some government decisions, protesters continue to ramp up the pressure. On Saturday night, tens of thousands of flag-waving Israelis took to the streets and renewed their protests against the unpopular reforms.&nbsp;</p>

<p>From northern Galilee to the avenues crisscrossing the financial hub of Tel Aviv, protesters converged, beating drums and blaring horns, according to a Reuters report.&nbsp;</p>

<p>"We all don't see any future if this will keep on going.&nbsp;We are not united. We lost our unity,"&nbsp;Yariv Shavit, 53, an engineer in Israel's high-tech sector, protesting on the street was quoted as saying.&nbsp;</p>

<p>However, the controversial reforms by Netanyahu threaten to undo the 'apolitical melting pot' of IDF, experts argue.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Notably, this is not the first instance when reservists from critically important units, such as pilots, have threatened to refuse service. In the past, the same has&nbsp;happened&nbsp;over issues such as the Second&nbsp;Lebanon War and the&nbsp;disengagement from the Gaza Strip. However, the country has never seen civil disobedience on this level before.</p>

<p>There are approximately&nbsp;465,000 reservists in the country who play a pivotal part, even during peacetime when they can be called up for as many as 60 days a year to serve the army.&nbsp;</p>

I have given many years of my life defending this country,” said Allon, one of the leaders of a pressure group representing 60,000 Israel Defence Forces (IDF) reservists. “That’s why we are so angry. The government is breaking a very simple contract we have – to protect a Jewish and democratic Israel," he added. <p>Protesters were seen scrawling ‘Biden save us’ slogans on the roads. They are calling on international powers to press the Israeli government to not go ahead with the overhaul.&nbsp;</p>

<p>In fact, thousands of protesters also gathered before US diplomatic office in Tel Aviv Thursday night and called on the Biden administration to condemn Netanyahu’s plans to implement judicial changes.</p>

<p>Later in a video message, the PM said he was well and urged his fellow countrymen to stay hydrated. “I ask you all, spend less time in the sun, drink more water, and may we all have a good new week," he said.</p>

<p>Reuters reported that he was due to be discharged from the hospital after no irregularities were found in additional medical tests.</p>

<p>The Israeli parliament has given the initial nod to the bill. It has won a first of the three required votes to be written into the law late on Monday. The bill got the nod amid cries of 'for shame' by leaders in the opposition.</p>

<p>The proposed plan would give Netanyahu and his allies in the government the final say in appointing the nation's judges. Experts and analysts have warned that the judicial plan will wreak havoc on the country's economy and isolate Israel internationally. The plan is yet to be written into law.&nbsp;</p>

<p>But Netanyahu says the judicial reform will strengthen democracy and boost business. The Israeli prime minister is on trial for corruption charges he denies.&nbsp;</p>

<p>A day before, US rating agency Moody's announced it was lowering Israel's rating, which was made "stable" from "positive". It said the change "reflects a deterioration of Israel's governance, as illustrated by the recent events around the government's proposal for overhauling the country's judiciary".&nbsp;</p>

<p>It noted that "while mass protests have led the government to pause the legislation and seek dialogue with the opposition, the manner in which the government has attempted to implement a wide-ranging reform without seeking broad consensus points to a weakening of institutional strength and policy predictability".&nbsp;</p>

Mass protests erupted after Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu announced a "pause" to allow for dialogue on the reforms which were moving through parliament. As quoted by the news agency AFP, one demonstrator, Nadav Tamir, 61, said: "We are fighting for our democracy. We have no other country." Karen Baron, a 45-year-old Tel Aviv psychiatrist, said: "I didn't want to come today but my sister told me, 'We have no choice', and it's true. We have no choice -- we can't lower our guard. We have to defend our country." The proposed plan would give Netanyahu and his allies in the government the final say in appointing the nation's judges. Experts and analysts have warned that the judicial plan will wreak havoc on the country's economy and isolate Israel internationally. The plan is yet to be written into law. But Netanyahu says the judicial reform will strengthen democracy and boost business. The Israeli prime minister is on trial for corruption charges he denies. A day before, US rating agency Moody's announced it was lowering Israel's rating, which was made "stable" from "positive". It said the change "reflects a deterioration of Israel's governance, as illustrated by the recent events around the government's proposal for overhauling the country's judiciary". It noted that "while mass protests have led the government to pause the legislation and seek dialogue with the opposition, the manner in which the government has attempted to implement a wide-ranging reform without seeking broad consensus points to a weakening of institutional strength and policy predictability". Thousands of Israelis again hit the streets to protest government judicial reforms

<p>Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu on Monday (April 10) reinstated Defence Minister Yoav Gallant. Addressing a press conference, Netanyahu said the two resolved their disagreement over Gallant's public call last month for a halt to the government's bitterly divisive judicial overhaul plan which he said became a threat to Israel's security. "I've decided to put our differences behind us," Netanyahu said, adding he and Gallant worked closely together throughout the last two weeks.</p>

<p>"Gallant remains in his post and we will continue to work together for the safety of the citizens of Israel," he told reporters.&nbsp;</p>

<p>On March 26, the prime minister's decision to sack Gallant triggered mass protests. However, a report by the news agency Reuters on April 3 said Netanyahu delayed the dismissal of his defence minister.&nbsp;</p>

<p>On Monday, Netanyahu said he would restore calm and security to Israel following rising tensions over the last week. The country has witnessed heavy clashes, shootings, rocket strikes and a car-ramming attack since last week.&nbsp;</p>

<p>A day after the Israeli police stormed the Al-Aqsa mosque in Jerusalem, over 30 rockets were fired from Lebanon into Israel, an attack which the Israeli army said was most likely carried out by Hamas. Israel then responded by striking the Gaza Strip and southern Lebanon, targeting terror infrastructures that it said belonged to Hamas.</p>

<p>And last Friday, an Italian tourist was killed and seven others injured in a car-ramming attack in Tel Aviv.&nbsp;</p>

Israel is in the midst of what can only be described as a major political crisis after Netanyahu’s government proposed an overhaul of the country's judiciary, earlier this year.</p>

<p>President Isaac Herzog’s office said on Tuesday evening that he was “currently meeting with the working teams representing the ruling coalition, Yesh Atid and the National Unity Party,” the two centrist parties for “a first dialogue meeting”. This comes days after Netanyahu fired Defence Minister Yoav Gallant, which overnight plunged the ruling coalition into chaos.&nbsp;</p>

<p>On Monday, tens of thousands of people took to the streets outside the Knesset (Israeli parliament) in Jerusalem while major labour organisations called for a strike effectively bringing the whole country to a grinding halt. Hours later, Netanyahu delayed the process for the next session of parliament in order to “pass the reform through dialogue.” The next session will be after the Passover recess in April.&nbsp;</p>

<p>In a joint statement on Tuesday the leader of the opposition Yair Lapid, who has since been sceptical of the move and Benny Gantz, a former defence minister, said that these talks would stop immediately “if the law is put on put on the Knesset’s agenda,” reported AFP. The opposition had previously refused to negotiate until the process to pass the controversial overhaul was stopped.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Meanwhile, the Israeli PM, in a statement on Tuesday has said that the goal is to “reach an agreement.” The two sides wrapped up talks after 90 minutes, said Herzog’s office, reported Times of Israel. The meeting was held “in a good atmosphere,” and will continue tomorrow. Today’s meeting included delegations from Netanyahu’s Likud party and opposition parties Yesh Atid and National Unity.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The legal reforms would threaten the checks and balances of the country as it has no written constitution while the proposed legislation seeks to weaken the Supreme court. It would also give absolute power to the ruling party coalition, which in this case would be Netanyahu’s Likud party, which also holds a majority in the Knesset.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Notably, after the first round of talks with the Israeli president, the Yesh Atid delegation said that they pushed for a “widely agreed upon constitution based on the values of the Declaration of Independence,” in a statement, as per Times of Israel.&nbsp;</p>

Despite Netanyahu hitting a pause on the overhaul, activists have said they will continue their rallies. “This is another attempt of Netanyahu trying to gaslight the Israeli public in order to weaken the protest and then enact a dictatorship,” said the Umbrella Movement of demonstrators, in a statement. It added, “We will not stop the protest until the judicial coup is completely stopped.”</p>
