Hundreds of thousands of Israelis took to the streets of Tel Aviv on Saturday in the latest demonstration against the hard-right government's controversial judicial reform plans that opponents see as a threat to democracy.

Since the government revealed the reform package in the month of January, thousands of Israelis joined weekly protests in what has turned out to be the biggest demonstration movement in the history of Israel.

While protests have been staged in many cities including Jerusalem, the epicentre has been the commercial hub of Tel Aviv, where demonstrators have taken to the streets and marched every Saturday against Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's government.

"Democracy, democracy," protesters chanted as they marched on Saturday. "We won't give up until it gets better."

"Despite months of protests, things are not going the way we wanted as one important part of the judiciary overhaul has been passed a few weeks ago," protester Ben Peleg, 47, told AFP.&nbsp;

"But if we continue to apply pressure on the streets, there is a possibility that we can still stop these changes."&nbsp;

Last month, the Israeli parliament voted to limit the so-called "reasonableness" law.

The new legislation constrains judicial review by Israel's top court of some government decisions, and critics fear it could pave the way to a more authoritarian government.&nbsp;

Israel's ally United States has termed parliament's vote as "unfortunate" and repeatedly raised concern about the political turmoil.

Netanyahu has repeatedly reinstated that the move is a "necessary democratic step," highlighting the need to empower the elected government and align policies with the majority of citizens.

"We passed the amendment on reasonability so that the elected government can carry out policy in line with the decision of the majority of the citizens of the country," he said earlier in a televised address.

However, opponents argue that the judicial revamp could pave the way for an authoritarian government by weakening checks and balances on the Israeli executive.

Critics, including the US, expressed concern over the potential implications of the judicial reform package. They stressed the importance of enduring changes in democracy and having a broad consensus.

Protesters take to streets in Israel against Benjamin Netanyahu's judicial overhaul

More than 1,000 reservists from the Israeli Air Force&nbsp;on Friday (July 21) threatened to suspend their voluntary duty in protest against Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu-led government’s plans to overhaul the judicial system.

In a letter addressed to ministers, the military's chief of staff and the air force chief, the 1,142 active duty reservists called on the government to halt their plans and maintain the independence of the judiciary.

<h2>Reach broad agreements&nbsp;</h2>

“Legislation that allows the government to act in an extremely unreasonable manner will harm the security of the State of Israel, will cause a loss of trust and violate my consent to continue risking my life - and will lead, with deep sorrow and no choice, to a suspension of my volunteer reserve duty," the reservists said, reports Reuters news agency.

They asked the government to “reach broad agreements” with regard to the judicial overhaul, and “strengthen the trust in the judicial system by all parts of society, and preserve its independence.”

The reservists, who volunteer after completing their mandatory military service, account for around half of crews sent on combat sorties, according to Reuters, which has quoted army veterans.

Responding to the letter, Israel's National Security Minister Itamar Ben-Gvir said that "refusing service was dangerous for the country".

<h2>Israel military concerned&nbsp;</h2>

Israel’s military echoed similar concerns saying that they are examining the impact of the letter and that "accordingly, will examine the implications".

"Failing to report to reserve duty hurts the IDF and state security. Over the past days, it is evident that cohesion has been damaged, which will take a long time to repair," he said.

It is unclear what measures would be taken against reservists who do not show up for voluntary duty.

Lawmakers are scheduled to vote next week on a bill that would empower the government to overturn any decision made by the Supreme Court.

For months, the Israeli Defence Forces (IDF) has been grappling with the protests announced by hundreds of military reservists against the government’s plans to make changes to the judiciary.

<h2>Opposition’s demands for negotiations</h2>

A secret ballot was held in the Knesset where Netanyahu’s Likud party holds 64 of the 120 seats along with members of the opposition for the selection of the nine-member committee which would choose the judges for Israeli courts.&nbsp;

Netanyahu’s contentious judicial overhaul plan was paused back in March after which he&nbsp; agreed to negotiate with the opposition lawmakers after weeks of mass protests and international criticism as many called the proposed reforms a threat to democracy.&nbsp;

The opposition leaders had reportedly threatened to withdraw from negotiations with Netanyahu if their candidate, Karine Elharrar, was not named to the committee for the selection of judges which includes two politicians, three judges and two lawyers.&nbsp;

The panel not only appoints judges but also approves the makeup of the Supreme Court which has been central to the judicial reform battle. The committee typically comprises lawmakers from both the coalition as well as the opposition but parts of the overhaul had demanded that the ruling coalition, in this case, Netanyahu’s Likud party, control&nbsp;both positions.&nbsp;

<h2>Netanyahu’s failed bid to delay vote</h2>

Since the opposition would not back down on its demands, Netanyahu reportedly asked his allies to oppose all candidates, including its own members and aimed to delay the ballot which would also push all the appointments until the next vote which is a month from now.

However, after the ballots, which were cast anonymously, were counted it turned out that several coalition members voted in favour of the opposition’s pick for the committee Elharrar of the Yesh Atid party whose appointment to the nine-member panel is now secure with a 58-56 vote.&nbsp;

Meanwhile, Tally Gotliv of the Likud party&nbsp;managed to garner 15 votes and did not clear the threshold. This has now paved the way for another vote for the second seat within 30 days, said the Knesset speaker Amir Ohana.&nbsp;

The vote also exposed some divisions within the ruling coalition which has raised questions about Netanyahu’s control over his political allies. Meanwhile, the opposition leaders have said that this vote does not change the fact that there is still no committee and the talks would be off the table till the panel is complete.&nbsp;

“The committee has not been established and the threat to our democracy has not been removed,” said Yair Lapid, the leader of opposition party&nbsp;Yesh Atid. He added, “No committee, no talks.” Lapid also called the vote “good news” since a member from the opposition would remain on the judicial selection committee.&nbsp;

Netanyahu, in a video statement after the vote, said that the opposition was to be blamed for the talks not moving forward even after getting what they wanted. “(National Unity party leader Benny) Gantz and Lapid don’t want real negotiations,” said the Israeli PM, adding that “I promise the citizens of Israel, unlike them, we will act responsibly for our country.”&nbsp;

Meanwhile,&nbsp;Israeli Foreign Minister Eli Cohen, in an interview, said Harris was perhaps not fully informed about the judicial reform which was proposed by Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s government.&nbsp;

Israel’s Ambassador to the US Michael Herzog, in a speech before her also mentioned the proposed judicial overhaul. “Israel is an imperfect democracy, and we like you have our own set of internal challenges. As a young nation only 75 years old, we are still grappling with important questions relating to our democratic system,” said Herzog.&nbsp;

He added, “But let me assure you, I am confident that Israel will remain a vibrant democracy.” Notably, US President Joe Biden’s administration has faced mounting pressure over the proposed judicial reform and has called on Netanyahu to drop the judicial overhaul plan over the past few months.&nbsp;

In an interview with Israel’s Kan news, Cohen said, “If we were to ask Kamala Harris what bothers her about the reform, she wouldn’t be able to name a single clause,” reported Times of Israel. He added, “I don’t know whether she read the bill…I imagine she has not.”&nbsp;

This was followed by the US Ambassador to Israel Tom Nides saying that Harris’ presence at the event was about the strength of the relations between the two nations. Nides told Channel 12 news that while he has “respect” for Cohen, “the VP said things the administration says (at) every opportunity regarding the shared values and policies. Harris is a strong supporter of Israel.”&nbsp;

The Israeli foreign minister’s comments had prompted a supposed diplomatic storm between the two allies&nbsp;and hours later Cohen issued a statement where he said he had “deep respect” for their ally the US and Harris who he then called “a true friend of Israel.”&nbsp;

He added, “Israel’s legal reform is an internal issue that is currently in the process of consolidation and dialogue. The State of Israel will continue to be democratic and liberal, as it has always been.”

Earlier this year, Netanyahu’s government unveiled a legal reform plan which has repeatedly been criticised by the opposition and critics who have said that it would threaten the democracy and freedom of Israel as it supposedly plans to weaken the country’s Supreme Court.&nbsp;

The overhaul, which is now making its way through parliament, will constitute a threat to Israeli democracy, the protesters said. Thousands of protesters carried the blue and white Israeli flag as well as the rainbow flag representing the LGBTQ community at Tel Aviv's Dizengoff plaza on Saturday.&nbsp;When they marched through the city's centre, the protesters halted traffic. "Save Democracy!" shouted one poster held up by the mob.

President Isaac Herzog on Wednesday proposed a compromise but it was promptly rejected by the cabinet.&nbsp;

As per Herzog's outline, new Basic Laws, Israel's quasi-constitutional laws, are to be put on hold until the whole outline is put into effect. The plan also calls for no alteration in the roles between the branches, the Attorney-General and legal adviser, and the judiciary.

In a joint press conference on Thursday, the leaders of the opposition parties displayed their support for Herzog's plan. "The offer is not perfect," said former premier Yair Lapid. "It is not what we wanted, but it is a fair compromise that allows us to live together."
