Ireland has sought to return asylum seekers to the United Kingdom in a bid to stem arrivals through Northern Ireland, reported the British and Irish media&nbsp;on Sunday (Apr 28), amid concerns that Britain’s Rwanda plan would lead to more asylum seekers from the UK.

<h2>About the Irish government’s plan</h2>

The Taoiseach (Irish Prime Minister) Simon Harris has asked the country’s justice minister, Helen McEntee, to introduce legislation to the cabinet which would allow Dublin to return inadmissible international protection applicants to the UK.

The move comes amid concerns that UK PM Rishi Sunak’s Rwanda plan would lead more asylum seekers to enter Ireland through the land border with Northern Ireland.

A spokesperson for Harris said that he wanted to protect the integrity of Ireland’s system and in line with this, the Irish PM had asked the justice minister to bring proposals regarding the designation of safe third countries and allowing the return of inadmissible international protection applicants to the UK.

Earlier this week, McEntee revealed that 80 per cent of recent arrivals to Ireland came from the UK across the Irish border.&nbsp;

“There are many reasons why we have seen an increase in migration toward Ireland,” said the Irish justice minister speaking on Irish broadcaster RTÉ’s Six One News.&nbsp;

She added, “That’s why I’m introducing fast processing…I’ll have emergency legislation at cabinet this week to make sure that we can effectively return people to the UK.”

McEntee also said she would&nbsp;meet with British Home Secretary James Cleverly and other officials during a visit to London, on Monday (Apr 29), to raise these issues.&nbsp;

<h2>UK’s Rwanda policy</h2>

Ireland’s Tánaiste (deputy PM) Micheál Martin noted how the UK’s Rwanda policy was already impacting Ireland, saying that people were “fearful” of staying in the UK and were crossing the border to the Republic so they would not be sent to the East African country.

Notably, the deputy PM, who also serves as the country’s foreign minister, has previously criticised the UK’s Rwanda policy which became law, on Thursday (Apr 25).

In an interview with Sky News, on Sunday, Sunak defended the controversial Rwanda legislation and noted that it is working as people were worried about coming to the UK.

“The deterrent is - according to your comment - already having an impact, because people are worried about coming here and that demonstrates exactly what I’m saying: if people come to our country illegally, but know that they won’t be able to stay, they’re much less likely to come,” said Sunak.&nbsp;

In a speech, later on Sunday, Harris is expected to say that warning signs around the abuse of public figures should be taken seriously “before the unthinkable happens,” according to the Guardian.&nbsp;

The survey was conducted by the University of Aberdeen Department of Archaeology's James O'Driscoll, with the use of LiDAR technology. O'Driscoll carried out the survey in the Baltinglass landscape of County Wicklow, Ireland which is dotted with prehistoric remains and the results were published in the journal Antiquity. LiDAR is a type of remote-sensing method in which laser pulses are fired towards the ground to generate 3D models of a specific landscape. Speaking to Newsweek, the researcher said, "I have been working on the Baltinglass landscape for over a decade. It formed the core component of my PhD." "While my PhD focused on targeted geophysical and remote sensing surveys and excavations, what was sorely missing was a large-scale topographical model of the landscape, which would not only help to knit together all of the research that had previously been undertaken, but also help to discover new archaeological sites that were either hidden under trees and scrub overgrowth, or had been mostly levelled by thousands of years of ploughing," he added. Discovery of five 'cursus' monuments The survey's "most significant" findings were a group of five unknown "cursus" monuments. Cursuses are a type of monumental Neolithic structures which are similar to ditches or trenches and are found in the islands of Great Britain and Ireland. These prehistoric monuments generally have long and relatively narrow earthwork enclosures. "The discovery of the cursus monuments is particularly significant, as these are incredibly rare in Ireland," said O'Driscoll. "There are less than 20 recorded cursus monuments in Ireland, and they typically occur in isolation or pairs. This makes the identification of five examples in Baltinglass the largest cluster of these sites in the country—but also, the detailed topographical model of the sites and their surrounding landscape provided an opportunity to 'digitally' investigate these monuments in detail," he added. He added that these solar events are related to farming cycles, along with death and rebirth which emphasised the purpose of these mysterious monuments. O'Driscoll hinted that the monuments may have symbolised the walking of the dead towards the heavens. "The function of these types of monuments has always been a thorny topic, as we simply don't have enough information. But given that some of the Baltinglass sites can also be linked with burial monuments, this suggested to me that they may have been ceremonial monuments used in burial practices, where the cursus marked the physical route in which the dead moved from the living into the afterlife," said O'Driscoll. Indian-origin Leo Varadkar on Wednesday (Mar 20) announced that he will step down as the prime minister of Ireland and the leader of the governing Fine Gael party. He cited "personal and political" reasons behind this surprise move as he spoke about his decision.&nbsp;

While addressing the media, Varadkar said that leading the nation was the most "fulfilling time" of his life.&nbsp;

"I am resigning as president and leader of Fine Gael effective today and will resign as the Taoiseach (prime minister) as soon as my successor is able to take up that office," Varadkar told reporters gathered outside government buildings in Dublin.&nbsp;

Varadkar said that he had asked for a new leader of the party to be elected ahead of Fine Gael's annual conference on April 6. After that, the parliament would vote on that person becoming prime minister.&nbsp;

Speaking to our diplomatic correspondent Sidhant Sibal, he said, "I think realistically, we're probably looking at the second half of the year being a more likely time for a breakthrough there rather than the first half." India and Ireland trade worth Euro 10 billion per year. On India's payments system, he pointed out, "Hugely impressive...Everybody is buying and selling using their mobile phones." During the India visit, he had a meeting with EAM Jaishankar as well. Here is the transcript:

WION: How do you see India as a market? And what kinds of dynamics do you see between trading relationships when it comes to India and Ireland?

Simon Coveney: We see India as a dynamic and huge growth market, there are very few economies in the world that are growing at the pace that we're seeing here in India. And so, from an Irish perspective, you know, we're a globalised economy already. And I think you're likely to see a lot of dynamic young Irish companies choosing to come to India, to build partnerships here to build opportunities here. I hope also we're going to see more Indian companies come to Ireland as a gateway into the European Union. As we see trade between India and the EU grow significantly in the years ahead and we are as you know, working at the moment on an EU-India Free Trade Agreement, which hopefully can be agreed upon at some point later this year, which can facilitate even more trade, but you know, coming from a relatively small country in the European Union, but a country by the way, that has a very similar history to India, in terms of a colonial past a struggle for independence, and now of course, building a technology-based growth economy. We, I think, can partner in a very dynamic way. And the meetings I've had this week with some of the largest companies in India, working with dynamic Irish companies, providing solutions in areas like financial technology in areas like cybersecurity, obviously a big industry around aviation which are very much part of here. There are huge opportunities for growth. So today, we have an annual trade between India and Ireland that's worth about 10 billion euros per year. But we think that we can create a much-much bigger trade relationship in the years ahead.

WION: So you mentioned about India, EU FTA how hopeful you are on that FTA because it has been years since the negotiations have been happening now &amp; both sides, EU and India go into election cycle. So any deadline, any challenges you look forward?

Simon Coveney: Well, look, I think we need to be pragmatic, and I think we need to be somewhat patient as well in the context of election cycles. You know, I think most people will realise that compromises aren't easily found in the weeks before elections happen. So the European Union has European elections in June. There's an election cycle just beginning here as well of course, in India. So, look, as a trading country in Ireland, we want to see an FTA happen, but I think realistically, we're probably looking at the second half of the year being a more likely time for a breakthrough there rather than the first half.

WION: India's payment system, you must have seen that how do you see it as an example of a cashless society?

Simon Coveney: Hugely impressive. I have to say you know, when I was walking to the streets of Mumbai, lots of street traders there and I was talking to some of them and it's a cashless society. Everybody is buying and selling using their mobile phones. Really impressive is what I'd say. And, you know, we have a lot of companies in Ireland that are focused actually on payment systems, digital platforms for payment systems, in terms of protections, against fraud and so on. And this is an area where we'd like to work with India together. I think we can learn a lot from you. And I think you can also potentially learn from some of the successes that our companies have had but it's an amazing digital transformation that we've seen, even basic trading now on the streets, is taking place on the back of secure digital platforms. Very impressive.

WION: So my last question to you is, you met with the Indian External Affairs Minister. The key issues today are the conflicts, one happening in Europe and happening in West Asia. What's your country's stance?

Simon Coveney: Well, look, first of all, can I say I, you know, I have huge time for your foreign minister. You know, I know him we've worked together on the UN Security Council. He's a very able operator and very respected internationally. So as you would expect, we had a good conversation in relation to the war on Gaza. We both want to see a ceasefire happen. We want to see a significant humanitarian aid effort getting to the civilian population of Gaza the desperately need that now. Ireland has been one of the most vocal European countries calling for a ceasefire. Of course, we have strongly condemned the terrorist attack that Hamas perpetrated on Israeli citizens on the seventh of October, that must be condemned. There is no excuse for it. But the war that has followed has taken an extraordinary toll, more than 30,000 people killed, many of them children and women. And really, we need to see an end to that sooner rather than later. And India is a powerful voice internationally and I hope can play their role. On Ukraine, also, an enormous human tragedy. You know, we're seeing Russian aggression, trying to change international borders by force. In Europe right now in Ukraine,&nbsp;hundreds of 1000s of people killed. Ireland and all countries in Europe are showing very strong solidarity with Ukraine as they tried to protect themselves and the sovereignty and integrity of their own country. And what I would say is that this is not just a European war. The world needs to take note of what's happening. If the international community doesn't stand up to powerful countries that are trying to change international borders by force of arms. Well, then I think we're in a very dangerous place, if that becomes a precedent that the world accepts, and that is why we've taken such a strong position to try to support Ukraine, to defend themselves. And I hope that that can be successful in time as well, India's voice is a powerful one in the context of that conflict.

The defeat even prompted calls for prominent campaign figures such as the children’s minister, Roderic O’Gorman, to resign. However, experts say the setback is not strong enough to shatter the ruling coalition of Fine Gael, Fianna Fáil and the Greens.

Northern Ireland's parliament on Saturday (Feb 3) appointed Irish nationalist Michelle O'Neill as their very first minister in a historic shift.

O'Neill's appointment indicates the rise of the party which has stated that its ultimate dream of a united Ireland is "within touching distance."

She in her first address to the Northern Ireland Assembly after being appointed as the First Minister was "a massive honour".

"The days of second-class citizenship are long gone and today confirms that they will never come back," she said.

"We mark a moment of equality and a moment of progress - a new opportunity to work and grow together, confident in, that wherever we come from, whatever our aspirations are, we can and we must build our future together. I'm really delighted to see every MLA (Member of the Legislative Assembly) back in this chamber today and I welcome the fact that the DUP (Democratic Unionist Party) have decided to re-enter the democratic institutions and that the outcome of last year's assembly election is now being respected," she added while addressing her fellow Northern Irish lawmakers.

<h2>UK flights diverted to Germany and France</h2>

Thousands of people in the UK and parts of Ireland were placed under warnings for the storm which wreaked havoc bringing heavy rains and strong winds of up to 159 km/h. Notably, some parts of the UK witnessed their strongest winds in 10 to 20 years.

Images and videos from airports in the UK and Ireland showed chaos as many flights were cancelled, including more than 160 flights from Dublin Airport. Additionally, clips show some planes struggling to land or shaking violently before ultimately landing at London airports.&nbsp;

This led to chaos as some passengers were taken to the wrong destinations, and others were taken to a whole other country, which ultimately led them to spend the night on terminal floors.&nbsp;

Flights heading to Bristol, London and Dublin were diverted to Paris, while a plane which was supposed to land in Edinburgh ended up in the German city of Cologne.&nbsp;

Since some of these flights were on domestic routes, the passengers were travelling without a passport and could not pass through immigration now that they were in another country.&nbsp;

Speaking about his experience, Luke Bromage-Henry, whose flight was supposed to land in London from Jersey, but ended up in Paris, said they sat on the runway for several hours. “Worst trip to Paris ever,” he told the BBC.&nbsp;

“I slept for about two hours underneath some chairs in the transfer terminal,” said Bromage-Henry, who spent the night in the terminal at Charles de Gaulle Airport.

<h2>What about Ireland?</h2>

Ryanair, an Irish carrier was particularly affected since its base is Dublin where a whopping 166 flights to and from the airport were cancelled, on Sunday, according to Kevin Cullinane, group head of communications at Dublin Airport, reported CNN.&nbsp;

The airport also diverted 36 flights and saw 34 go-arounds, which is when a plane abandons landing mid-process and decides to “go around” for another try.&nbsp;

Ryanair flights from the Spanish cities of Tenerife and Seville headed for Edinburgh, ended up in Germany’s Cologne. Passengers on another Ryanair flight from Budapest to London flew back to Hungary after several attempts to land and before ultimately giving up.&nbsp;

Meanwhile, a Ryanair flight from Lanzarote to Dublin made it to the Irish capital before turning around and was diverted to Bordeaux, France, without attempting to land.&nbsp;

Another flight by the Irish carrier from Manchester to Dublin which is typically a 30-minute route turned into a two-and-a-half hour one after it made a go-around and was diverted to Paris.&nbsp;

A separate plane on the same route went back and forth between the UK and Ireland for over three hours before it landed in Liverpool, around 50 kilometres from the departure airport.

At least two people were killed in storm-related incidents on Monday (Jan 22), as per media reports. A man in Scotland died after the car he was in was hit by a tree, and another man in Northern Ireland passed away after a tree fell on his car.

Isha also left thousands without power in several parts of the UK, as the country braces for another storm, on Tuesday (Jan 23) named Storm Jocelyn, which is expected to bring heavy rains and possible flooding.&nbsp;

UK Power Networks said it had restored power to most properties which lost electricity in eastern and south eastern England. However, about 45,000 homes in Northern Ireland remained without power.&nbsp;

As of early Monday, 8,000 homes in north-west England and 3,000 in Wales were also hit with power cuts. Additionally, around 10,500 properties in the north of Scotland were facing power outages and a further 12,000 in southern and central areas.

Scotland was among the worst hit after gusts of over 144 km/h&nbsp;led to&nbsp;cancellation of all train services. Several flights from Edinburgh and Glasgow airports were also cancelled.&nbsp;

The Met Office issued yellow warning for wind&nbsp;remained in place across the UK until midday.&nbsp;

The UK national weather agency also reiterated its previous warnings of damage to infrastructure, travel disruption, and even injuries and danger to life due to large coastal waves and loose debris flying.&nbsp;

The strong winds also affected flight routes. An EasyJet flight from Edinburgh to Bristol, on Sunday afternoon had to be diverted to Paris, France. Since the intended journey was domestic, many passengers did not carry their passports and spent the night stranded in the terminal in Charles de Gaulle.

About 235,000 homes and businesses across Ireland were left without power due to the storm, according to reports.&nbsp;

The Irish government is planning to consider a request to alter the constitution in order to provide nature with a protected status. This could make Ireland the very first country in the European Union to bestow constitutional rights on nature for its protection.

The proposal, recommended by the Joint Committee on Environment and Climate Action, has recommended the government advance a referendum on safeguarding biodiversity.

This would grant nature rights similar to that of humans.

It came in response to a report by the Irish Citizens' Assembly on Biodiversity Loss.

In recent years, the Rights of Nature movement has become widely popular.

The movement seeks to recognise elements of nature such as trees, mountains, and rivers as entities with rights so that they can exist, flourish, be respected and be regenerated.

It also recognises the right of any person or organisation to safeguard and enforce the rights on behalf of nature.

Earlier in October this year, the Centre for Democratic and Environmental Rights&nbsp;appeared before the Joint Committee and testified about the reason why rights of nature needed to be recognised.

The team was backed by Dr Peter Doran of the Queen's University Belfast School of Law.

Executive director Mari Margil embraced the recommendation by the committee.

"We congratulate chairperson Brian Leddin and the Joint Committee for its work and taking this important step forward toward enshrining the rights of nature within Ireland's constitution," BBC quoted her as saying.

"Further, we look forward to the government and parliament's next steps to protect the rights of nature, and offer whatever assistance we can in this process," she added.
