An Oslo-based group Iran Human Rights (IHR) said on Wednesday that more than 100 Iranians are currently facing charges punishable by death in connection with the protests that took place all around the country after the death of Mahsa Amini. The Iranian authorities have already executed two people for their involvement in protests and the country’s Supreme Court said recently that many more are facing similar charges and it expects to announce the punishments in the near future.

In a report published by IHR, the rights group named 100 such detainees who can be facing capital punishment – 11 of whom are already sentenced to death. According to The Guardian, the report also said that they were not represented properly and have limited access to basic amenities.

“By issuing death sentences and executing some of them, [the authorities] want to make people go home,” said IHR director Mahmood Amiry-Moghaddam, according to the report.

“It has some effect … [but] what we’ve observed in general is more anger against the authorities. Their strategy of spreading fear through executions has failed,” he added.

She was declared dead in the hospital and the post mortem report revealed trauma to both body and head. A Dubai-bound flight carrying the wife and daughter of former football national team captain Ali Daei, who has supported anti-government protests, was re-routed by the Iranian authorities, preventing them from leaving the country.

According to local media reports, Daei’s wife was banned from leaving the country after authorities ordered the Mahan Air plane she had been a passenger in to land on Iran's Kish Island in the Gulf.

"I really don't know the reason for this. Did they want to arrest a terrorist?" Daei told news agency ISNA.

The latest development comes weeks after a jewellery shop and a restaurant by the ex-footballer were shut down after he pledged his support on social media.

The Iranian authorities have been coming hard on the protesters, who have been on the streets against the government over the death of Mahasa Amini, a 22-year-old woman who died in police custody after being detained for violating rules related to Islamic headscarf.

People from all walks of life have joined the three-month-long protest, which is threatening to oust the theocracy that has been in place since the 1979 Islamic revolution.

People have been relying heavily on social media platforms, which the government is trying to shut down.

Iran has blamed the Western countries, Israel and Saudi Arabia for inciting the unrest, accompanied by the arrest of foreign nationalism which is being viewed as a PR exercise in an effort to shift the blame away from the Iranian leadership.

Meanwhile, seven people belonging to Britain were arrested “for their unconstructive role in the recent developments”.

“Some countries, especially the one you mentioned, had an unconstructive role regarding the recent developments in Iran. Their role was totally destructive and incited the riots," Iran's foreign ministry spokesperson Nasser Kanaani said, according to Reuters.

In what was apparently quite a defiant stance, Iran on Sunday (December 18) said that it would not "seek permission from anyone" to expand relations with Russia. Iran has dimissing US concerns over growing military partnership between Tehran and Moscow.

CIA chief William Burns told PBS television on Friday the military cooperation between Iran and Russia "poses real threats" to US allies in the Middle East.

He added that Iran's "national interests" dictate its policies.

"Cooperation between Iran and Russia in various fields including defence is expanding within the framework of common interests... and is not against any third country."

Kanani said, "American officials continue their baseless political claims and illegal actions against the Islamic republic of Iran, questioning the conventional defence and military cooperation between Iran and Russia."

White House national security spokesperson John Kirby on December 9 had regarded the Tehran-Moscow military partnership as "harmful" to Ukraine, Iran's neighbouring countries and the world.

Not seeking 'permission' for greater ties with Russia, says Iran

Celebrities and rights groups called on Iran on Sunday to free actor Taraneh Alidoosti, one of the most prominent figures yet arrested in its three-month crackdown on protests.

Alidoosti, 38, was arrested on Saturday, official media said, after making a string of social media posts supporting the protest movement -- including removing her headscarf and condemning the execution of protesters.

The unrest was sparked by the September 16 death in custody of Mahsa Amini, 22, whom the morality police accused of violating the Islamic republic's strict dress code for women.

Iran blames the United States and other "enemies" for trying to destabilise the country by fuelling the demonstrations.

Several prominent figures -- including other actors and footballers -- have been detained in connection with the protests.

Alidoosti has considerable international renown, performing in award-winning films by director Asghar Farhadi, including the Oscar-winning 2016 film 'The Salesman'.

Somayeh Mirshamsi, assistant director on 'The Salesman', said Alidoosti had called her father to say she was being held in Tehran's notorious Evin prison, run by the intelligence ministry.

Alidoosti asked her father for the delivery of medicines, and her family are "worried" and her health, Mirshamsi wrote on Twitter.

- 'Power of women's voices' -

Prominent Iranian cinema figures gathered outside Evin prison, Iranian daily Shargh reported, including co-stars from "Leila's Brothers", a film which Alidoosti went to Cannes Film Festival earlier this year to promote.

The group included actor Payman Maadi and director Saeed Roustayi, as well as her father Hamid, who played football for Iran in the 1970s.

Her arrest also generated anger on social media, with exiled actor Golshifteh Farahani calling her "the brave actress of Iran" and demanding her release.

On November 9, Alidoosti posted an image of herself without a headscarf, holding a paper with the main slogan of the protests: "Woman, life, freedom".

<div class="videoWrapper trancodeVideo"><iframe allowfullscreen="" autoplay="1" class="includeVideo" frameborder="0" height="350" src="https://www.wionews.com/videos/iran-protests-iran-arrests-actress-taraneh-alidoosti-arrested-on-charges-of-spreading-falsehood-544130/embed" style="width:100%;max-width:560px;" width="560"></iframe></div>

In a show of support after her arrest, the former French football star turned actor Eric Cantona reposted that image on Instagram with the hashtag "#freedom".

In Canada, Cameron Bailey, head of the Toronto International Film Festival, called Alidoosti "one of Iran's most talented and acclaimed actors".

"I hope she's free to keep representing the strength of Iranian cinema soon", Bailey wrote.

The New York-based Center for Human Rights in Iran said women including Alidoosti "are being arrested and jailed in Iran for refusing to wear forced hijabs".

"The power of women's voices terrify the Islamic republic's ruler", it added.

- 'Any price' -

During the street protests, banners of supreme leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei have been set alight, women have openly walked down streets without headscarves, and demonstrators have at times sought to challenge the security forces.

Authorities in Tehran on Sunday also questioned 26-year-old singer Amir Maghare of the hugely popular Macan Band pop group.

The judiciary's Mizan Online news website said Maghare had "left the prosecutor's office after providing explanations, receiving a warning and making a commitment".

Daily sports newspaper Khabar Varzeshi reported Sunday that Ashkan Dejagah, 36, a former Iran national football player who also has German citizenship, has been barred from leaving the country "after being seen in protests... in Germany".

Alidoosti's most recent social media post was on December 8, the same day Mohsen Shekari, 23, became the first person executed by authorities over the protests.

"Your silence means the support of the oppression and the oppressor", she wrote on Instagram.

Images have also circulated on social media of Alidoosti shopping in Tehran without a headscarf.

She had vowed not to leave Iran and said she was prepared to "pay any price to stand up for my rights."

Mizan Online said the actor was arrested "by order of the judicial authority" as she "did not provide documentation for some of her claims" about the protests.

Her Instagram account with more than eight million followers was no longer accessible on Sunday.

The Oslo-based monitor Iran Human Rights said Saturday that Iran's security forces had killed at least 469 people in the protests while at least 14,000 people have been arrested, according to the UN.

Celebrities and rights groups called on Iran on Sunday to free actor Taraneh Alidoosti, one of the most prominent figures yet arrested in its three-month crackdown on protests.

- 'Power of women's voices' - Prominent Iranian cinema figures gathered outside Evin prison, Iranian daily Shargh reported, including co-stars from "Leila's Brothers", a film which Alidoosti went to Cannes Film Festival earlier this year to promote. - 'Any price' - During the street protests, banners of supreme leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei have been set alight, women have openly walked down streets without headscarves, and demonstrators have at times sought to challenge the security forces. She had vowed not to leave Iran and said she was prepared to "pay any price to stand up for my rights." Mizan Online said the actor was arrested "by order of the judicial authority" as she "did not provide documentation for some of her claims" about the protests. Her Instagram account with more than eight million followers was no longer accessible on Sunday. The Oslo-based monitor Iran Human Rights said Saturday that Iran's security forces had killed at least 469 people in the protests while at least 14,000 people have been arrested, according to the UN. Iran's Telecommunications Minister Issa Zarepour said on Sunday that the Islamic Republic is preparing to launch "at least two satellites" into space by late March. His statement has come just a month after successful test of a launcher.&nbsp; The United States has in past repeatedly voiced its disapproval over such plans as it feels that such launches can boost Iran's ballistic missile technology, extending to the potential delivery of nuclear warheads.

Iran maintains that it is not seeking nuclear weapons, and says that its satellites and rocket launches are for civil or defence purposes.

"Nahid 1 and Nahid 2 satellites are being prepared," Zarepour was quoted as saying by official news agency IRNA.

Nahid is the name given to a series of telecommunications satellites developed by the Iranian Space Research Centre.&nbsp;

According to Zarepour, "We will have launches by year's end," March 20 in the Persian calendar.

In early November, Iranian state television announced the "successful suborbital launch of the satellite launcher named Ghaem-100".

The Ghaem-100 rocket was manufactured by the aerospace organisation of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps and it is the country's first three-stage solid-fuel satellite launcher, the channel added.

Iran successfully put its first military satellite into orbit in April 2020, drawing a sharp rebuke from Washington.

In August this year, another Iranian satellite, named Khayyam, was launched by Russia on a Soyuz-2.1b rocket from Baikonur Cosmodrome in Kazakhstan.
