Iran's government is forcing women to seek psychiatric help as part of their efforts to enforce laws that mandate covering their heads, often with hijab.&nbsp;

Healthcare organisations have cautioned that the country's judiciary is misusing psychological treatments, while others view this action as a sign of the government's struggle to maintain hijab rules, France24 reported.

In a defiant gesture, Iranian actress Afsaneh Bayegan&nbsp;posted photos of her hair without a hijab on Instagram and recently appeared at a public event in a similar manner. In response, Bayegan, aged 61, received a two-year suspended prison sentence and was instructed to attend a "psychological centre" weekly for the treatment of her supposed "anti-family personality disorder".

In another incident, a woman in Tehran was reportedly sentenced to a month of cleaning corpses in a morgue after being caught driving without a hijab.

Following the death of Mahsa Al Amini in September 2022, who was detained by Iran's morality police for her "improper" headscarf, many Iranian women have opted to show their hair in public as a mark of defiance.&nbsp;

The movement has garnered support from Iranian celebrities, athletes, and actresses.

At least four Syrian soldiers were killed and as many were wounded after an Israeli missile strike hit near the&nbsp;capital city of Damascus, reported state media&nbsp;Syrian Arab News Agency (SANA).&nbsp;

"At about 2:20 in the morning today, the Israeli enemy launched an aerial aggression from the direction of the occupied Syrian Golan Heights, targeting some points in the vicinity of the city of Damascus," said the agency citing a military source, adding that "some material damage" had also been reported.&nbsp;

After the initial strikes, the Syrian air defence system managed to intercept the Israeli missiles and shot&nbsp;down some of them, the publication noted.&nbsp;

In the aftermath, Syria's foreign ministry released a statement, condemning the attack "in the strongest terms".&nbsp;

Notably, on July 19, Israel carried out similar strikes near Damascus that killed three pro-government fighters and wounded four others. Previous other strikes have put both Damascus and Aleppo airports out of service as well.&nbsp;

At least four Syrian soldiers killed in Israeli air strikes near Damascus: Reports

Britain's home secretary Suella Braverman has said that Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps is the biggest threat to Britain's national security, amid fresh evidence of its reach into the country.

Braverman expressed fears that the group is stepping up its activities and is concerned by intelligence reports on Iranian spies attempting to recriut members of organised crime gangs to target opponents of the regime.

“The Iranian threat is the one that worries us the most,” a source close to the home secretary said as quoted by The Times &nbsp;“It’s a big issue because they are getting much more aggressive and their appetite is increasing. They are very defensive to anyone challenging their regime and just want to stamp it out. They are increasing their agitation.”

There have been calls for Iran's Revolutionary Guard to be proscribed as a terror organisation but such efforts have met resistance from UK's Foreign Office which has expressed concerns that such a move may permanently damage diplomatic relations between the UK and Iran.

The Sunday Times has said that it had information that reveals details of close ties between the Islamic Republic and a student organisation which is based in former Methodist church in Hammersmith, west London.

The Islamic Students Association, the student organisation, was reportedly founded to champion political and religious philosophy of Ayatollah Khamenei, the supreme leader of Iran who led 1979 Islamic revolution in the country.

In the month of January this year, Mohammam Hussain Ataee, a former chairman of the association and a master's degree student at the University of Bradford, made a trip to Tehran. He met Khamanei there and a picture of him kneeling solemnly before Khamanei (84). He later received a 'blessed' keffiyeh, which is a traditional Arabic headdress as a gift.

The association's Telegram channel had reportedly made posts praising Qasem Soleimani who was a senior military officer in the Revolutionary Guards who was killed by the US. These posts described Soleimani as a "martyr" and a leader of "resistance". Another prominent Iranian figure, Mohsen Fakhrizadeh who is the assassinated chief scientists of Iran's nuclear programme was called a "martyr" in these posts.

Earlier this year, UK's Foreign Secretary Secretary James Cleverly had announced sanctions on Iran's Revolutionary Guards. But now, pressure from lawmakers in the British Parliament is increasing to proscribe the Guards.

US and Canada, two of Britain's allies in Five Eyes intelligence-sharing alliance have taken steps to move in such direction.

According to a report by the state news agency IRNA, "The culture minister has personally issued an order to ban the 13th edition of the ISFA Film Festival, after using a photo of a woman without a hijab on its poster in violation of the law." The ban comes following the Iranian Short Film Association (ISFA) releasing a poster for its upcoming Short Film Festival featuring actress Susan Taslimi in the 1982 film "The Death of Yazdguerd". The festival was due to be held in September. Wearing a hijab has been compulsory for all Iranian women since shortly after the 1979 Islamic revolution. However, since September last year, women have flouted the dress code following protests triggered by the death of 22-year-old Mahsa Amini, who was arrested over an alleged violation of the dress code. Earlier in July, the police said that patrols had been relaunched to catch the increasing number of women ignoring the law. An Iranian court, which handed over the sentence, also ordered Bayegan, 61, to make weekly visits to a psychological centre "to treat the mental disorder of having an anti-family personality" and to submit a health certificate after her treatment. The court's verdict banned her from using social media and leaving the country for two years. The verdict came after the actress appeared at a movie ceremony without wearing a headscarf and then shared photos on social media. A popular Iranian actress Afsaneh Bayegan has been handed a 2-year prison sentence for not wearing a hijab headscarf in public. She has been suspended for 5 years.

Iran: Actor arrested for not wearing hijab

An Iranian court has given a prominent actress in the country a suspended two-year prison sentence for not wearing the compulsory hijab headscarf in public, said local media on Wednesday (July 19).

"Afsaneh Bayegan was sentenced to two years in prison, suspended over five years, for wearing a hat and failing to comply with the hijab law," Fars news agency reported.

Iranian law requires women to cover their head and neck in public.

In what can be termed a peculiar directive, the court has ordered Bayegan to visit a psychological centre every week "to treat the mental disorder of having an anti-family personality" and "to submit a health certificate after her treatment."

Fars news agency added that the verdict also bans the actress from using social media and leaving the Islamic Republic for two years.

The 61-year-old actress had appeared at a movie ceremony without wearing a headscarf and then shared photos on social media.

After the 1979 Islamic revolution, wearing a hijab has been compulsory for all women in Iran.

Bayegan had also expressed support for last year's protests triggered by the death in police custody of 22-year-old Iranian Kurd Mahsa Amini, who had been arrested in September for allegedly violating the strict dress code.

Bayegan rose to prominence after the 1979 revolution and is best known for her role in "Sarbedaran", a television series about Iran's resistance to Mongol invasion in the 14th century.

<h2>Police patrols increased</h2>

Since the Mahsa Amini protests, women in Iran have increasingly flouted the dress code. State media said on Sunday that there were increased police patrols on the street which were aimed at catching those ignoring the law.

The authorities in Iran are clamping down pn dissent as the anniversary of Mahsa Amini's death approaches apparently to prevent revival of protests that had rocked the counry last year.

Reuters has reported that Journalists, lawyers, activists, human rights advocates and students have been arrested &nbsp;summoned or faced other measures in a campaign that one activist described as "instilling fear and intimidation".

Senior officials are now defending theh new crackdown claiming that it is necessary to maintain stability.

Last year, when the protests were at their peak, Iranian authority responded by cracking down on protests.

A senior former Iranian official said the authorities should not ignore realities on the ground this time round.

"People are still angry over Amini's death and they are frustrated because of their daily struggle to bring food to their tables," the former official said who Reuters said asked not to be identified.

"These wrong decisions may have painful consequences for the establishment. People cannot take more pressure. If it continues, we will witness street protests again."

Police patrols increased Since the Mahsa Amini protests, women in Iran have increasingly flouted the dress code. State media said on Sunday that there were increased police patrols on the street which were aimed at catching those ignoring the law. The authorities in Iran are clamping down pn dissent as the anniversary of Mahsa Amini's death approaches apparently to prevent revival of protests that had rocked the counry last year. Reuters has reported that Journalists, lawyers, activists, human rights advocates and students have been arrested summoned or faced other measures in a campaign that one activist described as "instilling fear and intimidation". If it continues, we will witness street protests again." Iranian actress handed two-year jail for not wearing hijab, ordered treatment for 'mental disorder'

10 months after Mahsa Amini's death, Iranian police have relaunched morality police patrols to detain women refusing to wear hijabs. Has Iran gone back to square one after months of nationwide protests? Priyanka Sharma tells you more.

Gravitas: Iran: Women's rights become the battleground

After all the violence and all protests that happened in Iran after Mahsa Amini's death in 2022, one would have expected that there would have been some change but Iran seems to be back to square one. The notorious morality police are back on the streets to enforce the dress code that the country mandates for women.

Is Iran back to square one?

The Iranian officials, on Sunday (July 16) announced that it will relaunch patrols by the so-called morality police in a bid to enforce the hijab rule after a reported increasing number of women leaving their hair uncovered in public. The announcement was made less than a year after the death of <a href="https://www.wionews.com/world/death-of-iranian-woman-after-arrest-by-moral-police-unforgivable-white-house-516956">Mahsa Amini</a>, whose alleged death in police custody had sparked nationwide protests.

<h2>Morality police back on Iranian streets</h2>

The announcement was made by the Iranian law enforcement spokesperson, Saeid Montazeralmahdi who said that police patrols were now operational on foot and with vehicles who would resume notifying and detaining women for not wearing a hijab in public.&nbsp;

The <a href="https://www.wionews.com/world/iranian-state-media-seems-to-dismiss-reports-morality-police-is-being-abolished-540022">morality police</a> would “issue warnings and then introduce to the judicial system people who unfortunately insist on their norm-breaking behaviour without concern for the consequences of their covering that is outside of the norm,” &nbsp;Montazeralmahdi was quoted as saying by the state media.&nbsp;

According to a report by Al Jazeera, the officers have been tasked to warn both women and men to crack down on people whose covering is not deemed appropriate in the Islamic Republic. However, following the nationwide protests, morality police had largely disappeared from the Iranian streets.&nbsp;

But it was not the end of Iranian officials’ bid to enforce the dress code which has been in place since the aftermath of the Islamic revolution of 1979. Over the months, Tehran deployed <a href="https://www.wionews.com/middle-east/iran-finds-new-methods-to-enforce-hijab-law-calls-it-a-legal-issue-reports-550523">other measures</a> like closure of businesses whose staff do not adhere to the rules and <a href="https://www.wionews.com/videos/iran-to-install-surveillance-cameras-in-public-places-to-nab-unveiled-women-580663">installing cameras</a> in public places to track down offenders.

According to a report by the Associated Press, on Sunday, Iranian officials returned to the traditional ways where men and women of the morality police could be seen patrolling the streets in marked vans.&nbsp;

<h2>Recent arrests</h2>

Last week, the police arrested Mohammed Sadeghi, a young and relatively unknown actor after a raid on his home after he posted a video in response to another online video. The footage showed a woman being detained by the morality police, and Sadeghi, in his response wrote “Believe me, if I see such a scene, I might commit murder,” &nbsp;as per the AP.

While the punishment for violating the dress code of the Islamic Republic is fines or prison terms of up to two months. Iran’s reformist newspaper Shargh, on Sunday, also reported that four women received additional punishment which included attending “psychological classes” as well as driving bans.

<h2>Less than a year after protests</h2>

The announcement of the relaunch of the so-called morality police happened exactly 10 months after the September 16 death of Amini, an Iranian Kurd who died allegedly after being taken into custody for supposedly violating the dress code.&nbsp;

The 22-year-old’s death sparked nationwide <a href="https://www.wionews.com/middle-east/watch-protests-erupt-in-mahsa-aminis-hometown-amid-rise-in-school-attacks-reports-580934">protests</a> against the country’s hijab law and the morality police. More than 500 protesters and dozens of security personnel were killed and nearly 20,000 detained during these protests, which as of earlier this year have died down following a heavy crackdown. The Iranian government had also labelled them foreign-instigated “riots.”&nbsp;

Iran pitches 'special priority' for India in oil exports with focus on cooperation over Chabahar Port

Iranian President Ebrahim Raisi received red-carpet welcomes from his counterparts in Kenya, Uganda, and Zimbabwe on his three-country tour of Africa. Tehran has touted the trip as a "new beginning" in relations with the continent. Raisi's trip to Africa is the first by an Iranian president in more than a decade and represents a bid to diversify Iran's trade relations in the face of crippling U.S. sanctions. Iran stepped up diplomatic outreach to developing world countries after then-U.S. President Donald Trump withdrew the United States from Tehran's nuclear accord with world powers in 2018 and reimposed sanctions.

The visit comes as the Islamic republic tries to shore up diplomatic support to ease its international isolation, with Iranian President Ebrahim Raisi also due to travel to Uganda and Zimbabwe this week on the first Africa tour by an Iranian leader in 11 years.

In addition to meeting Kenyan President William Ruto, Raisi will head to Uganda later Wednesday for talks with his Ugandan counterpart Yoweri Museveni and see Zimbabwean President Emmerson Mnangagwa on Thursday.

Africa has emerged as a diplomatic battleground in recent months, with Russia and the West also trying to court support over Moscow's invasion of Ukraine, which has had a devastating economic impact on the continent, sending food prices soaring.

Western powers have also sought to deepen trade ties with the continent, along with India and China, which has been on an infrastructure spending spree in Africa.

Raisi described his visit to Kenya as "a turning point in the development of relations between (the) two countries".

He said his talks with Ruto reflected "the determination and resolve of both countries for expansion of economic and trade cooperation, political cooperation, cultural cooperation".

Ruto described Iran as "a critical strategic partner for Kenya" and said the two governments had signed five MoUs (memoranda of understanding) focusing on areas including information technology, investment promotion and fisheries.

"These memoranda will enhance and further deepen our bilateral relations for sustainable growth and development between our two countries."

Ruto told reporters that Raisi had also shared plans for Iran to set up a plant in the port city of Mombasa "to manufacture an indigenous Iranian vehicle that has now been given the Kiswahili name, 'Kifaru', meaning rhino."

According to Iran's official IRNA news agency, Raisi is heading a delegation that includes the foreign minister as well as senior businesspeople.

Iranian President Ebrahim Raisi has delayed his tour of Africa and now will kick it off a day late on Wednesday (July 12), said Kenyan foreign ministry. The announcement was made after Raisi failed to appear at a scheduled press event in Nairobi.

The rare visit by the Iranian president to Kenya, Uganda and Zimbabwe has come as the Islamic Republic attempts to forge new alliances and tackle its international isolation. The three-day trip will be the first by an Iranian president to Africa in 11 years.

On Tuesday morning, Raisi was scheduled to hold a press conference with Kenyan President William Ruto. But neither of them showed up.

"The schedule of the president has now been reviewed to allow for finalisation of key MoUs (memoranda of understanding) that are central to the furtherance of relations," Kenya's foreign ministry said.

"The Iranian president will now arrive tomorrow for a state visit," it said, adding that the two leaders would hold bilateral talks at 7:00 am (0400 GMT) on Wednesday.

A Ugandan official said Raisi's trip to the East African country would proceed as previously scheduled, with his two-day visit due to begin on Wednesday.

President Yoweri Museveni and his Iranian counterpart will hold talks, address the media and a business forum during the visit, said Faruk Kirunda, deputy press secretary to the Ugandan leader.
