US carries out retaliatory strikes in Iraq and Syria against Iran-linked targets

Days before national elections in Pakistan, the courts came down hard on former Prime Minister Imran Khan. He's been handed two big jail sentences in cases of fraud and leaking of national secrets. The verdicts hold an uncanny similarity to the arrest of present election front-runner Nawaz Sharif in 2018. The Pakistan army controlling who comes in and who goes out of power shows through.

Iran-Pakistan: Bonhomie amid the boil

The US launched an air assault on several sites in Iraq and Syria used by Iran-backed militias. The attacks come in retaliation to the Drone strike that killed three US service members in Jordan.

Hossein Salami, the chief commander of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps said on Wednesday (Jan 31), that Tehran is not afraid of direct military confrontation with Washington. He also said that threats coming from the United States will not be left unanswered, further adding that Iran is not seeking war with the US. "We hear some threats from American officials about targeting Iran. We tell them that you tested us and we know each other. We do not leave any threat unanswered, and we do not look for war, but we are not afraid of it. This is the well-known truth," he said.
