What do you like to do when you have free time on hand?&nbsp;

Do you have to claim your leisure time, or you can simply exercise it whenever you wish to?&nbsp;&nbsp;

If you are a woman, chances are that your answers to the above questions might differ from a man's.&nbsp;&nbsp;

While we challenge the age-old stereotype of looking at men as breadwinners and women as homemakers or caregivers, a lot remains unchanged at the very core. One such invisible form of suppression is the blatant disregard or denial of a woman’s right to leisure. It is so deep-seated that sometimes a woman herself isn’t aware of her free time or what she could do with it. Yes, a lot depends on the socio-economic background a woman belongs to, but it largely remains the same for women across the globe. And, this further impacts the inequalities between the two genders.&nbsp;&nbsp;

According to a Pew Research Center analysis of 2021-22 American time-use, working husbands in the United States, aged between 25 to 64, spend 28 hours a week on leisure, which is two&nbsp;hours more than working wives who spend about 26 hours on it.&nbsp;

And, in India, the setting isn’t any different. India’s 2019-2020 time-use survey carried out by the National Statistical Office indicates that men spend more time than women on employment, socialising, sleeping, and eating while nearly 20 per cent&nbsp;of the average Indian woman’s day is consumed by unpaid domestic work or caregiving.&nbsp;&nbsp;

These statistics put perspective to a well-known fact that women across the globe bear the brunt of domestic chores and caregiving duties.&nbsp;

That is why when I stumbled upon a social media post last year, I was completely taken in by the pictures of women enjoying light-hearted and carefree moments. Guess, what did I see.&nbsp;&nbsp;

These are just a few examples from an Instagram page called – Project Basanti: Women at Leisure - a repository of pictures and videos of women enjoying their free time. The pictures left a lasting impression on me. It is amazing to see the carefreeness of women in a physical sense.&nbsp;&nbsp;

I sent a direct message to the creator of the page - Surabhi Yadav and requested her time for a TV story. Months later, I met her in New Delhi for a story and here’s what I know of Surabhi Yadav, her project, gendered leisure – and the beauty in the ordinariness of things.&nbsp;&nbsp;

When Surabhi Yadav lost her mother in 2014, she realised she had never really known her. She says, she knew her mother just as her mother, and never more the person that she was. She started interviewing people who knew her mother closely. Surabhi’s opening question to them would be – “what do you remember about Ma (mother)?”&nbsp;&nbsp;

Her neighbours in Khargone - a small town in Madhya Pradesh, India, told her that her mother was “goofy and naughty”. Those were not the adjectives Surabhi could associate with her mother’s image. All her life Surabhi would know only one side of her mother – the woman that her mother was to her, and nothing more. It was only after the demise of her mother that she got to understand her better. Speaking to people made Surabhi recognise that her mother was capable of so much joy, pleasure, and spontaneity – something that would go unnoticed on a daily basis. This realisation triggered something in Yadav.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;

And, thus, began her obsessive inquiry into what women like her mother do when they are not working, and eventually led her to start a visual project called Project Basanti: Women at Leisure in 2018. Yadav named it ‘Basanti’ after her mother, which means ‘spring’ in English - a time for blossoming. And, leisure does that to people, she says.&nbsp;

The social media project has over 800 pictures and videos of women enjoying their leisure time. It is a qualitative project which provides a definitive commentary about our society and gendered leisure.&nbsp;&nbsp;

When asked about what Surabhi Yadav’s takeaways from the project have been ever since she started it. She says two things have come out of the project –&nbsp;&nbsp;

One - “Leisure sets us free. It gives us space to reveal our inner selves. It lets one flourish”.&nbsp;

Two - “Leisure is a measure of how free a society is.”&nbsp;

And, yes, that’s what the pictures and videos on her social media page will tell you.&nbsp;&nbsp;

An IIT-D alumna Surabhi Yadav’s project has now expanded to pose the larger question of women’s identity and dreams – understanding the varied dimensions of their being. The more Yadav paid attention to women’s leisure, the more she started to understand the lack of leisure in a woman’s life. Women, especially homemakers, are forever, engaged in the labour of caregiving and managing homes. A kind of labour that is unpaid and unacknowledged. Yadav says that it is because of the invisibility of women’s labour, the absence of leisure in their lives also goes unnoticed. And, so, for most women, finding guilt-free, carefree time to do nothing productive, is an alien concept and a hard sight.&nbsp;&nbsp;

The seemingly mundane pictures of Project Basanti are a reflection of our society. Moments of leisure often taken for granted for men, appear profound when it is a woman on the other end. That’s bizarre, but that’s exactly the gap we must address and close. &nbsp;

Yadav’s concept of leisure sounds simple, yet it is not as straightforward as it looks. It is enveloped with notions of leisure I wasn’t familiar with. She tells me of a picture where a mother is filling journals with words to process her grief over her daughter’s death. How grief can be viewed as leisure, I ask. She tells me that it is a moment where the mother is reminiscing about her time with her daughter. She is one with the child through the process of writing. The mother is uncovering her absolute inner self.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Can one be at leisure or for that matter at peace while being grief-stricken? I am not sure. Maybe, my idea of leisure is limited to seeing happy faces and broader smiles. Maybe, the real idea of leisure has no constraints. Maybe, it includes every little moment that one calls one’s own – in myriad moments from happiness to ache.&nbsp;&nbsp;

I asked Surabhi Yadav if she were to imagine a world for women, what would that be, and this is what she had to say -&nbsp;&nbsp;

“Imagine how different our world would look, if our mothers were singing, dancing, writing poetry, and enjoying their real selves. It can bring so much transformation within them and beyond them.”&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;

I am going to leave you with that thought, this Women’s Day. Let it sit, marinate in the mind, and take a leisurely walk if it needs to.&nbsp;&nbsp;

The by-product of the thought might help you make leisure a priority.&nbsp;&nbsp;

What does leisure mean to you? What do you like to do when you have free time on hand? Do you have to claim your leisure time, or you can simply exercise it whenever you wish to?

What does leisure mean to you? What do you like to do when you have free time on hand? Do you have to claim your leisure time, or you can simply exercise it whenever you wish to? If you are a woman, chances are that your answers to the above questions might differ from a man's. While we challenge the age-old stereotype of looking at men as breadwinners and women as homemakers or caregivers, a lot remains unchanged at the very core. One such invisible form of suppression is the blatant disregard or denial of a woman’s right to leisure. It is so deep-seated that sometimes a woman herself isn’t aware of her free time or what she could do with it. Yes, a lot depends on the socio-economic background a woman belongs to, but it largely remains the same for women across the globe. And, this further impacts the inequalities between the two genders. According to a Pew Research Center analysis of 2021-22 American time-use, working husbands in the United States, aged between 25 to 64, spend 28 hours a week on leisure, which is two hours more than working wives who spend about 26 hours on it. And, in India, the setting isn’t any different. India’s 2019-2020 time-use survey carried out by the National Statistical Office indicates that men spend more time than women on employment, socialising, sleeping, and eating while nearly 20 per cent of the average Indian woman’s day is consumed by unpaid domestic work or caregiving. These statistics put perspective to a well-known fact that women across the globe bear the brunt of domestic chores and caregiving duties. That is why when I stumbled upon a social media post last year, I was completely taken in by the pictures of women enjoying light-hearted and carefree moments. Guess, what did I see. The pictures left a lasting impression on me. It is amazing to see the carefreeness of women in a physical sense. I sent a direct message to the creator of the page - Surabhi Yadav and requested her time for a TV story. Months later, I met her in New Delhi for a story and here’s what I know of Surabhi Yadav, her project, gendered leisure – and the beauty in the ordinariness of things. When Surabhi Yadav lost her mother in 2014, she realised she had never really known her. She says, she knew her mother just as her mother, and never more the person that she was. She started interviewing people who knew her mother closely. Surabhi’s opening question to them would be – “what do you remember about Ma (mother)?” Her neighbours in Khargone - a small town in Madhya Pradesh, India, told her that her mother was “goofy and naughty”. Those were not the adjectives Surabhi could associate with her mother’s image. All her life Surabhi would know only one side of her mother – the woman that her mother was to her, and nothing more. It was only after the demise of her mother that she got to understand her better. Speaking to people made Surabhi recognise that her mother was capable of so much joy, pleasure, and spontaneity – something that would go unnoticed on a daily basis. This realisation triggered something in Yadav. And, thus, began her obsessive inquiry into what women like her mother do when they are not working, and eventually led her to start a visual project called Project Basanti: Women at Leisure in 2018. Yadav named it ‘Basanti’ after her mother, which means ‘spring’ in English - a time for blossoming. And, leisure does that to people, she says. The social media project has over 800 pictures and videos of women enjoying their leisure time. It is a qualitative project which provides a definitive commentary about our society and gendered leisure. When asked about what Surabhi Yadav’s takeaways from the project have been ever since she started it. She says two things have come out of the project – One - “Leisure sets us free. It gives us space to reveal our inner selves. It lets one flourish”. Two - “Leisure is a measure of how free a society is.” And, yes, that’s what the pictures and videos on her social media page will tell you. Time spent on leisure activities enjoys that positively impacts our productivity creativity and well-being. But just as inequality pervades every sphere of life it exists in our relaxation time too. So what do we do about this Gap in the gap of gender inequality in leisure? How do we fix it? Can a conversation around it be the starting point?

Who has more time for leisure, men or women?

One woman hailed from a village in the South of India and another woman hailed from the Northeast of the country, each one of them had to face their own challenge in pursuing their dreams. However, what brought them together is their desire and decision to serve the Indian Army, as officers.

Their respective journeys from Nanjamadai Kuttai village in Erode, Tamil Nadu, and Digboi, Assam, culminated at the Army Officers Training Academy, Chennai, which has been training women officers to serve the Indian Army, for more than three decades.&nbsp;

The Army Officers Training Academy in Chennai offers ab initio training for qualifying youth and sculpts them into Army officers, all in a period of 11 months. The Passing Out Parade (comparable to a graduation day in civilian institutions) at the Army OTA is to take place on Saturday, March 9.

On the day of the Passing out Parade, officer cadets will formally be inducted into the Army in what is known as a Commissioning ceremony and their parents will&nbsp;get an opportunity to unveil the star (rank) that they wear on their shoulders.&nbsp;

<h2>Lieutenant Saranya - Family's first woman graduate, she defied early marriage, is now an Army Officer</h2>

Hailing from Nanjamadai Kuttai, a village near Erode in Tamil Nadu, Saranya was born in an agrarian family of four. Right from the time of her secondary schooling, she had been known for breaking stereotypes and enjoying physical activities.

She admits to not having had a great academic bent of mind, and she began playing Kabaddi from 6th grade onwards and took the sport very seriously. As she moved ahead in her schooling, she noticed the village tradition of getting girls married early on. She had a deep desire to change this norm and be a pathbreaker, setting an example for the girls of her village.&nbsp;

On completing her civil engineering from the Kongu Engineering College, she became the first woman graduate in her family. On getting placed in IT services firm Cognizant, she worked there for six months and then decided it was time to move on to her love of sports - Kabaddi.&nbsp;

Witnessing many young girls in her village being unable to pursue their dreams and passions, owing to the familial pressure of early marriage, Saranya thought of something that none had ever attempted in their taluk (subdivision of a district) - she aimed to become the first woman to join the Indian Army.

She embarked on this arduous journey, in the hope that the young girls in her village would be motivated to step out of their homes, dream big, and work towards achieving them and attaining their potential.

When her family got to know of her SSB preparation, they were apprehensive about it and wanted to get her married, as was the case with other girls in the village. In the face of this pressure, she remained resolute and requested her family's support. To prove her capabilities and merit, she took up a job at Coimbatore and supported her family's needs with the income and also went on to contest in open Kabaddi tournaments.

Testimony to her steely resolve is the fact that she made five SSB attempts and cleared the final one. It is laudable that she chose to try again and again, despite the pressure and apprehension at home.&nbsp;

At the OTA, while she was in Chennai, the capital of her home state Tamil Nadu, she felt out of place as she did not know a word of Hindi. However, all it took was two months and she successfully adapted to the new ways, and witnessed significant improvement in her personality and progress. As she gets ready for the big day, she looks back at the tremendous transformation of a village girl into an Indian Army Officer.&nbsp;

<h2>Liuetenant Minerva Jaishy - The first woman officer from Digboi, Assam</h2>

Hailing from Digboi, Assam, she did her schooling at the Delhi Public School in her hometown. Excelling in both academics and sports, she got the opportunity to pursue her college education in New Delhi and earned her Bachelor of Arts (Honors) in Political Science from Dayal Singh College.&nbsp;

While at college, the opportunity to serve in the National Cadet Corps was a life-changing decision for her, as it granted her the exposure and confidence to take on various challenges and work in teams. As the Junior Under Officer of her college NCC, she represented the institution in sports and other events. Her experience as an NCC cadet instilled a fascination for a career with the Indian Armed Forces.&nbsp;

Her native town, Digboi, Assam comes under the Tinsukia district, which has been an AFSPA (Armed Forces Special Powers Act) imposed region.

While it has been largely peaceful, there have been insurgent activities, and for the people living there a career in engineering or medicine is the most preferred option. The youth there and their families don't think beyond these conventional professional courses. Even Minerva's own family, hailing from the Gorkha community was surprised at her career choice.&nbsp;

Right after college, she attempted the SSB exam twice. In the latter attempt, she secured the All India First Rank in the Short Service Commission (Women) - 53 entry and became the first candidate from her home state Assam to be ranked first.

At the time, the Indian Army's 18 Garhwal Unit was posted in Digboi and they felicitated her and highlighted her achievements before the NCC cadets in the town, with the aim of motivating them to join the Armed Forces.

Minerva believes that it is a matter of convincing the people and helping them understand the importance of the Indian Army's service and positive impact on the nation's security.

With her training now completed, even her parents who were initially surprised at her decision are extremely proud of their daughter for having chosen a career with the Indian Army. She isn't the first Army Officer of her family alone, she's the first one from her school and the first woman officer from all of Digboi, Assam.&nbsp;

Mona: There has been a strong presence of women in the industry since the 1940s all over the world. As a child, I grew up watching actresses and aspired to be one myself someday. My mother used to watch actresses like Madhubala and Nutan, and I sat with her and saw them when I was a kid. While growing up, seeing actresses like Juhi Chawla and Kajol made an impact on me through the roles they played. Hollywood actresses like Julia Roberts, Kate Winslet, and Meryl Streep also left a mark on me. Somewhere, I knew I had that talent in me. There was a sense of belonging here. I am so glad to be a part of this industry. It is a blessing for me and a very humbling experience to receive such love and support from the audience. What is your view on this? Mona: We live in a world where women are always told what to do, what to wear, where to go, and so on. Mohandoss, the first one among seven women achievers to share her journey on Prime Minister Modi's social media accounts on the occasion of International Women's Day, urged people to feed a needy person and contribute to a hunger-free planet.

Introducing herself, Mohandoss said that she was inspired by her mother, who instilled the habit of feeding the homeless.

"You heard of food for thought. Now, it is time for action and a better future for our poor. Hello, I am Sneha Mohandoss Inspired by my mother, who instilled the habit of feeding the homeless, I started this initiative called Food Bank India," Mohandoss tweeted along with a video introducing herself.

The Food Bank India founder works with volunteers towards eradicating hunger. With the help of her team, she has also initiated breastfeeding awareness drives.

"I work with volunteers, many of whom are outside India, to work towards eradicating hunger. We have over 20 chapters and have impacted several people with our work. We also initiated activities like mass cooking, cooking marathons, breastfeeding awareness drives," she said.

Earlier in the day, Prime Minister Modi stated that seven women achievers will share their life`s journey and interact with his followers through his social media accounts on the occasion of the International Women's Day.

The Prime Minister had announced that on women's day this year, he will give away his social media accounts to women whose life and work inspires people to help them ignite motivation in millions.

Try 'New India': Woman achiever's witty reply to Twitterati seeking PM Modi's handle password

The ill-treatment to women in Pakistan has much been talked about and a new United Nations report confirms this point as the country stands first in holding biases against women.

The Gender Social Norms Index report released by United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) studied 75 countries making 80 per cent of the world's population. The index measured how social beliefs act as a hindrance to gender equality in areas like politics, work, and education.&nbsp;

The prejudiced views that were asked in the study were: that men are better politicians and business leaders than women; that going to university is more important for men than women; and that men should get preferential treatment in competitive job markets.

The findings revealed that the percentage of those holding at least one sexist bias was largest in Pakistan, 99.81 per cent.&nbsp;

Qatar and Nigeria followed Pakistan with 99.73 per cent.&nbsp;

Ahead of the International Women's Day on March 8, the research doesn't present a brighter picture as 90% of the people studied worldwide have at least one prejudice against women.&nbsp;

Andorra had the least population with sexist beliefs, at 27.01 per cent, and Sweden and the Netherlands were next to it with 30.01 per cent and 39.75 per cent. &nbsp;

France, Britain and the United States had similar scores, with 56 per cent, 54.6 per cent and 57.31 per cent of people respectively holding at least one prejudice.&nbsp;

The numbers show "new clues to the invisible barriers women face in achieving equality" despite "decades of progress," the UNDP said in a statement released along with the report.
