International Space Station at risk of falling on Earth, NASA warns

After the Russian section of the International Space Station (ISS) experienced a radiator coolant leak on October 9, two cosmonauts in a spacewalk sought to investigate it. During the spacewalk, cosmonaut Oleg Kononenko and Nikolai Chub of the Russian space agency Roscosmos conducted their extravehicular activity (EVA) with the primary objective of identifying and documenting the radiator responsible for the leak.

As they approached the radiator, Kononenko came so close that his tether got contaminated by the pooling ammonia, also known as 'blob' or 'droplet'. As a result, the tether had to be secured in a bag and left outside the ISS when the spacewalk concluded.

Russia's 'Nauka' on International Space Station goes wrong once again

The National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) recently unveiled how it is planning to retire International Space Station (ISS), which is a unique space station currently in lower Earth orbit. The space station facilitates collaborative projects involving five participating space agencies: NASA, Roscosmos, JAXA, ESA and CSA.

The ISS is often visible to the naked eye from Earth's surface as it is the largest artificial object in space and the largest satellite in low Earth orbit.

NASA disclosed the $1 billion plan to carry out the re-entry of ISS back to Earth as it said that it aims to develop a new orbital vehicle that will be vital in the process.

On September 20, NASA released an industry solicitation for a platform the agency is calling the US Deorbit Vehicle (USDV), which will be a catalyst in the safe return of the ISS.

Calling it a 'space tug', NASA has invited companies to develop a specialised vehicle which would manoeuvre ISS from its position 175 miles above Earth to approximately 75 miles. This would start the process.

"The primary objective of this contract is to procure a safe, reliable and cost-effective de-orbit vehicle to meet NASA’s ISS end-of-life de-orbit mission requirements," NASA said as quoted by Flight Global.

As quoted by Earth.com, Jonathan McDowell, an astrophysicist at Harvard University, said: "This has been done before, notably with the Mir space station. Many tons of material will hit the ocean relatively intact, and there will definitely be a warning to clear the airspace (we get about one of these a month for disposal of much smaller spacecraft like ISS cargo ships)."

"Here's what's tricky. You can fly the ISS safely down to an altitude of about 250 km. After that, you need this special USDV ship to take over the steering – it's like driving down a motorway with a lot of wind gusts – you need a lot of muscle power to stay on the road. If you ever lose control and the ISS starts tumbling, you're in trouble because then you can't reliably point the rocket engines in a particular direction," McDowell added.

O'Hara applauded the station's "legacy" and said it had been bringing the countries together. "I'm excited to get on board and see the crewmates who are waiting for us," she added. Kononenko, 59, and Chub, 39, are scheduled to spend a year on the ISS, while O'Hara, 40, is to spend six months aboard. It was the first mission to space for both O'Hara and Chub. Russia’s Luna-25 crashes into moon The liftoff took place after Russia's first lunar mission in nearly 50 years failed last month. Russia's Luna-25 probe crashed into the Moon after it spun into an uncontrolled orbit. Roscosmos said that there had been an "abnormal situation" during a manoeuvre earlier. Preliminary investigations showed that the lander "has ceased to exist following a collision with the Moon's surface". The scientists at the agency then started a probe to determine the cause of the crash. "During the operation, an emergency situation occurred on board the automatic station, which did not allow the manoeuvre to be performed with the specified parameters," Roscosmos wrote in an update on Telegram. NASA power outage disrupts communication between Mission Control and ISS

The Indian space agency ISRO announced the successful completion of engines that would steer the Indian astronaut crew module, during the Gaganyaan human spaceflight missions.

"This test involved five liquid apogee motor (LAM) engines with a thrust of 440N and sixteen reaction control system (RCS) thrusters with a thrust of 100N," the ISRO said.

This test is one in a series of many tests that ISRO intends to conduct under various circumstances, to check the reliability of its service module.

In simple terms, a rocket lifts a spacecraft or crew module to space using the rocket's own propulsive power. Once the crew module is separated from the rocket and ejected into space, it has to rely on its own engines to steer itself, to move into the most precise orbit and even to steer itself back towards earth for re-entering the atmosphere etc. This time, ISRO has tested the systems that would help its crew module perform all of the above and more.

The five LAMs that offer a thrust of 440N each are meant to steer the spacecraft, change its orbit and perform the tasks that require high-thrust. Owing to various factors, spacecrafts are required to fire their on-board engines to makes course corrections, steer clear from space debris and other space objects or satellites etc.

For example, a spacecraft which has to dock with the International Space Station must be able to use its own engines to steer itself towards the space station. However, the LAM are the main engines of the spacecraft and are only placed on one side of the craft.

On November 21, 1963, the launch of a US-origin Nike Apache sounding rocket from Thumba, Thiruvananthapuram, in southern India marked the beginning of the Indian Space programme. Sixty years later, in 2023, the Indian and American governments are collaborating on human spaceflight and working towards sending an Indian astronaut to the International Space Station (ISS) in 2024.

This announcement on the highest-ever level of Indo-US Space cooperation was made during the Joint Press Conference at the White House, addressed by US President Joe Biden and Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

“From designing new ways to diagnosing and treating new illnesses like cancer and diabetes to collaboration on human space flight, including on sending an Indian astronaut to the international space station in 2024…,” President Biden said while listing out the areas of bilateral cooperation.

The coming year would be the most significant-yet milestone in Indo-US space ties, as the two countries are expected to undertake two high-profile missions: The launch of jointly-built earth-imaging NISAR Satellite (NASA-ISRO Synthetic Aperture Radar) from India's spaceport in Sriharikota by early 2024 and the newly-announced mission to launch an Indian Astronaut to the ISS.

NISAR Project Scientist from NASA-JPL Dr Paul Rosen recently explained to WION the capabilities of the jointly-developed imaging satellite.

This will also mark the first-ever trip of an Indian astronaut to the ISS and the second foray of an Indian into space. Thus far, Wing Commander Rakesh Sharma has been the only Indian to venture into space. He had travelled as part of the Soviet Interkosmos programme in 1984.

"President Biden and Prime Minister Modi welcomed the decision of NASA and ISRO to develop a strategic framework for human spaceflight cooperation by the end of 2023. The leaders hailed the announcement by NASA to provide advanced training to Indian astronauts at Johnson Space Centre in Houston, Texas, with the goal of mounting a joint effort to the International Space Station in 2024", read the joint statement from the US and India.

"India and the US have had a deep and long legacy of cooperation in the areas of Space science and technology. Furthering our cooperation in the field of space, we have decided to sign the Artemis Accords.... For India-US ties, even sky is not the limit," said Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi during his media address. Going by his announcement, India would become the 27th signatory of the Artemis Accords, a common set of principles to govern the civil exploration and safe, peaceful, prosperous use of outer space.

NASA, in coordination with the U.S. Department of State, established the Artemis Accords in 2020 along with seven other founding member nations.

The Artemis Accords is not just limited to Lunar exploration. "The principles set out in these Accords are intended to apply to civil space activities conducted by the civil space agencies of each Signatory. These activities may take place on the Moon, Mars, comets, and asteroids, including their surfaces and sub-surfaces, as well as in orbit of the Moon or Mars, in the Lagrangian points for the Earth-Moon system, and in transit between these celestial bodies and locations," the Artemis Accords document states.

Signing the Artemis Accords must not be construed as joining the US-led Artemis manned Lunar exploration programme. Notably, even non-spacefaring nations have signed the accords, which are legally non-binding.

As one of the few elite nations that possess end-to-end space capabilities (means to design, develop and launch rockets and satellites indigenously), both the announcements made in the White House are expected to immensely benefit India's space programme - be it human spaceflight missions or exploratory ones.

Gaganyaan

Over the last four years, India's space agency ISRO has been working on the country's ambitious indigenous Human Spaceflight programme known as Gaganyaan. This endeavour is envisioned as a three-day mission, where a crew of three Indian astronauts housed within a capsule (crew module) will be carried to space on an Indian rocket and brought back to Earth.

Once in Earth orbit, the crew are expected to perform in-orbit experiments during their stay in space and then the crew module would de-orbit and splash down, off the Indian coast.

Chairman ISRO, Dr S Somanath recently told WION that the Indian astronaut candidates (crew of Indian Air Force Pilots) have completed the first round of training abroad, have completed simulator training in India and are now undergoing theoretical training.

He added that the maiden unmanned mission of Gaganyaan would be carried out in early-2024 and the astronaut mission would be attempted in late-2024 or early-2025. India's efforts towards its maiden human spaceflight programme are being supported by Russia, US, Japan, France, European Union etc.

As India's astronauts gear up for the Gaganyaan mission, the ISRO-NASA joint mission to ISS in 2024 could be a precursor. Such a mission can help in preparing the Indian crew for their own national mission and give them a feel of travelling to space, living in Low Earth orbit and working there.

While the ISS is originally a cooperative programme between US, Russia, Europe, Canada and Japan, astronauts from Israel, Saudi Arabia and UAE have also flown to the ISS and worked there. The advanced astronaut training that is to be provided for Indian astronauts at the Johnson Space Centre would better equip Indian astronauts for handling the several challenges that come with space travel.

ISRO officials have said on multiple occasions that India's Gaganyaan is not a one-off mission and will have several follow-on missions. As a nation with end-to-end indigenous space capability, India aspires to have a sustained human presence in space, possibly an Indian Space Station.

Till the time that plan becomes a reality, ISRO-NASA missions to the ISS and similar efforts could provide a great wealth of learnings and experience for India's space science community and aid in developing India's own efforts and resources towards sustained human presence in Low Earth Orbit.

This announcement on the highest-ever level of Indo-US Space cooperation was made during the Joint Press Conference at the White House, addressed by US President Joe Biden and Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi. “Collaboration on Human Spaceflight, including sending an #Indian astronaut to the International #space station in 2024” says @POTUS as he lists out areas of bilateral cooperation between #india & #USA Travel to @Space_Station & working there will prep astronauts for Gaganyaan pic.twitter.com/mJfcX4sKdP — Sidharth.M.P (@sdhrthmp) June 23, 2023 × “From designing new ways to diagnosing and treating new illnesses like cancer and diabetes to collaboration on human space flight, including on sending an Indian astronaut to the international space station in 2024…,” President Biden said while listing out the areas of bilateral cooperation. “#india & #USA have had a deep and long legacy of cooperation in #space #science & #technology…furthering our ties in space, we have decided to sign the #ArtemisAccords.. for India-US ties, even sky is not the limit” @narendramodi India to be 27th Signatory of US-led Accords pic.twitter.com/XnoCV0dpCm — Sidharth.M.P (@sdhrthmp) June 23, 2023 × The Artemis Accords is not just limited to Lunar exploration. Gaganyaan Over the last four years, India's space agency ISRO has been working on the country's ambitious indigenous Human Spaceflight programme known as Gaganyaan.
Elon Musk-owned SpaceX launched four astronauts, including the first Saudi Arabian woman into space from the Kennedy Space Center at Cape Canaveral in the southern United States on Monday. The launch was textbook as the Falcon-9 rocket zooted off the surface with full thrust carrying the Dragon spacecraft.

Rayyanah Barnawi and Ali Aqarni from the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, Commander Peggy Whitson and Pilot John Shoffner from the USA formed the quarter aboard the spacecraft which has been dubbed Freedom. It separated from the rocket nearly 12 minutes after the launch.

“Hello from outer space! It feels amazing to be viewing Earth from this capsule,” Barnawi said after settling into orbit.

Prior to the liftoff, Barnawi said her inclusion in the trip represented the dreams of the Saudi women, “I am honoured and happy to represent all the dreams and all the hopes of the people in Saudia Arabia. And also the hopes and dreams of all the women in the region.”

The crew in their dragon capsule would reach the International Space Station (ISS) by Monday evening and spend over a week before making the sojourn back home with a splashdown planned off the Florida coast.

The Saudi pair is the first to ride a rocket to space since a Saudi prince ravelled on board the space shuttle Discovery in 1985. In what comes as a coincidence, the duo will be greeted by an astronaut from the UAE upon their arrival at the ISS.

Saudi Arabia sponsored the trip

The mission has been sponsored by the Saudi government. The kingdom last year signed a deal with Houston's Axiom Space, which arranges and manages private missions to space on US spacecraft for researchers and tourists.

Although Axiom has not revealed how much the kingdom is paying for the 10-day trip, the previous packages have hovered around the $55 million mark for individual passengers. NASA's current price list shows per-person, per-day charges of $2,000 for food and up to 1,500 for sleeping bags and other gear.

According to Saudi Press Agency (SPA), the astronauts will carry out 14 ground-breaking scientific experiments in microgravity that will aid in the development of new methods for creating circumstances that would allow people to explore space more effectively.

And also the hopes and dreams of all the women in the region.” The crew in their dragon capsule would reach the International Space Station (ISS) by Monday evening and spend over a week before making the sojourn back home with a splashdown planned off the Florida coast. The Saudi pair is the first to ride a rocket to space since a Saudi prince ravelled on board the space shuttle Discovery in 1985. In what comes as a coincidence, the duo will be greeted by an astronaut from the UAE upon their arrival at the ISS. ALSO READ | Saudi Arabia's first woman astronaut set to blast off into space on a private mission Saudi Arabia sponsored the trip The mission has been sponsored by the Saudi government. WATCH | Saudi's first woman astronaut en route to int'l space station × According to Saudi Press Agency (SPA), the astronauts will carry out 14 ground-breaking scientific experiments in microgravity that will aid in the development of new methods for creating circumstances that would allow people to explore space more effectively. Saudi Arabia's astronaut programme, which started in September 2022, is part of its Vision 2030 ambition to develop space research. Watch | International Space Station captures stunning view of northern lights

SpaceX, the rocket company of Elon Musk, on Thursday launched a four-person crew on a mission to the International Space Station, starting their six-month stay in space.

The SpaceX launch vehicle, which is carrying NASA astronauts Stephen Bowen and Woody Hoburg, the United Arab Emirates Sultan Al-Neyadi and Russian cosmonaut Andrey Fedyaev, lifted off from NASA’s Kennedy Space Centre in Cape Canaveral, Florida on Thursday at 12:34 am ET.

The Crew Dragon, which was carrying the astronauts, got detached from the rocket after it reached orbit, and as per estimates, it will spend about one day manoeuvring through space before it gets linked up with the space station. As per scientists, the capsule should dock at 1:17 a.m. ET Friday.

The launch of Crew Dragon on Thursday was the second attempt to blast off the mission, called Crew-6, into space. The first launch attempt failed on Monday.

During the live broadcast of the launch, officials stated that ground systems engineers had decided to call off the launch when less than three minutes were left on the clock.

The engineers stated that an issue was detected with a substance called triethylaluminum triethylboron, or TEA-TEB, which is a highly combustible fluid that is used to ignite the engines of Falcon 9 rocket at liftoff.

As per NASA, the problem started as the fluid moved from a holding tank on the ground into a “catch tank”. “After a thorough review of the data and ground system, NASA and SpaceX determined there was a reduced flow back to the ground TEA-TEB catch tank due to a clogged ground filter,” as per an update shared by NASA on its website early on Wednesday.

WATCH | SpaceX test fires powerful super heavy booster “The clogged filter explained the aberration engineers had seen on launch day. SpaceX teams replaced the filter, purged the TEA-TEB line with nitrogen, and verified the lines are clean and ready for launch,” NASA stated. Elon Musk to attempt Starship launch in March 2023

The International Space Station (ISS) had to perform three collision avoidance manoeuvres (CAM) in the year 2022 alone, in contrast with the total of 33 manoeuvres it has had to do since 1999.

The orbiting lab that houses a handful of astronauts and circles the earth at speeds of over 28,000kmph, at an altitude of 425kms, faces the constant risk of large and small objects that constitute space debris, said a top NASA scientist.

During a collision avoidance manoeuvre, the orbiting spacecraft fires its engines in order to move away and stay clear of an incoming object.

Speaking at an event in India, organised by the Indian Space Research Organization (ISRO) and Astronautical Society of India (ASI), Dr Jer Chyi Liou, NASA Chief Scientist for Orbital Debris stated that the American space agency had executed or assisted 18 collision avoidance manoeuvres by robotic spacecraft in the year 2022.

He mentioned that there are more than 47,000 pieces (each larger than 10cm) of space debris that are being tracked by the US Space Force and that their orbital paths were being monitored for possible collision risks. However, there were also millions of smaller pieces of debris that could not be tracked, but posed threats to assets in space.

Referring to the ISS, he revealed that the orbital lab is protected by 500 different shields, broadly known as Micrometeroids and Orbital debris (MMOD) impact protection shields.

"The American segments of the ISS are protected against orbital debris 1cm and smaller. The biggest threat to the ISS comes from debris too small to be tracked, but large enough to penetrate the protection shields (debris between 1cm to 10cm for US modules)," he said.

However, it was emphasised that installing impact shields came with a cost and increased the mass and volume of the spacecraft or space station. While the US module has impact shields to protect against debris 1cm and smaller, the other modules on ISS are not as protected and are even vulnerable to millimeter-sized debris. The orbiting lab is a joint effort between the US, Russia, Europe, Japan and Canada.

Explaining why the space debris of varying sizes is a constant cause of concern, Dr Liou mentioned that the average impact speed between two orbiting objects in Low Earth orbit (up to 2000kms above earth's surface) is 10km/second. For context, that is ten times the speed of a bullet and any collision at such high impact speeds could prove catastrophic.

International Space Station evaded three collision risks in 2022

Russia is assessing the damage and examining the flight-worthiness of the Soyuz crew capsule docked with the International Space Station (ISS) after the vehicle, known as MS-22. began spraying its coolant into space on December 14. Dramatic Images on NASA TV showed white particles that resembled snowflakes streaming out of the rear of the spacecraft some days ago.

In a press briefing organised by the US space agency, Sergei Krikalev, who leads human spaceflight programmes at Russia's Roscosmos, told reporters the damage was being assessed.

If a thermal analysis -- which assesses how hot it will get inside the cabin -- concludes MS-22 is unfit for crewed flight, then a scheduled launch of another Soyuz capsule in mid-March from Baikonur Cosmodrome could be moved up, and it would launch uncrewed, he said.

"They're looking at late February to send up the next Soyuz vehicle," added Joel Montalbano, NASA's International Space Station programme manager, who was also on the call.

If the new Soyuz vehicle brings the crew back, the damaged spaceship will return to Earth sans the crew.

There are currently seven people aboard the orbital outpost, but if MS-22 were deemed unfit, it would also mean the ISS has just one "lifeboat" capable of carrying four people, in case it needs to be evacuated.

Americans Josh Cassada and Nicole Mann, Japan's Koichi Wakata and Russia's Anna Kikina arrived on a SpaceX Crew Dragon in October. It is unclear why the damage took place, said Montalbano.

But it does not appear as though the Geminid meteor shower, an annual phenomenon, was to blame, since the hull was penetrated from a different direction.

"Both the trajectory team in Houston and the trajectory team in Moscow confirmed it was not from the meteor showers," he said. More work is still needed to determine if it was caused by naturally occurring micrometeoroids, man-made debris in orbit, or a hardware failure, he added.

'The Bourne Identity' director Doug Liman had a great vision in mind and he approached Universal Filmed Entertainment Group Chairman Donna Langley to present his movie pitch, which includes sending Cruise to International Space Station via rocket. Yes, you read it right. The 'Top Gun: Maverick' actor could be blasted off into space to perform a spacewalk for an upcoming film, becoming the first civilian to do so. Universal chairwoman Dame Donna Langley hinted at the future movie in a recent media interaction, which means that we might see the 60-year-old Hollywood actor making history at the International Space Station if all goes as planned. The 54-year-old British film executive said that the actor would be flown into space before disembarking from his rocket. All of this would be will be captured on camera for the film. Also read: Anna Sorokin, the con artist at centre of 'Inventing Anna', released from jail "We have a great project in development with Tom that does contemplate him taking a rocket to the Space Station", Donna explained to the BBC. "And hopefully he will become the first civilian to do a space walk outside of the International Space Station," she added. She also shared a few details about Tom's character in the secretive blockbuster. She said, "He will play a down-on-his-luck guy who finds himself in the position of being the only person who could save Earth."

'Development of cooperation': NASA signs deal with Roscosmos to share space station flights

Astronaut Samantha Cristopforetti has posted an interesting tweet. What's more, the European Space Agency astronaut has even nudged Hollywood star Sandra Bullock while she was at it.

The tweet has a photo that shows Cristoforetti floating in weightless conditions aboard International Space Station (ISS). Pretty regular experience for those aboard the ISS.

But the photo is a collage of two photos and the other one is a screengrab from movie 'Gravity'. The movie, starring Sandra Bullock and George Clooney saw Bullock inside a space station in a pretty similar pose to that struck by Cristoferetti.

"Hey, Dr. Stone! Quick question for you. How did you get your hair to stay put? #AskingForAFriend" says Cristoferetti in lighter vein in the tweet. Sandra Bullock played the role of Ryan Stone in the movie

Astronaut Samantha Cristopforetti has posted an interesting tweet. What's more, the European Space Agency astronaut has even nudged Hollywood star Sandra Bullock while she was at it.

Sandra Bullock played the role of Ryan Stone in the movie Hey, Dr. Stone!
