Florence Nightingale was born on May 12, 1820. Every year, her birth anniversary is celebrated as International Nurses Day.

She passed away on August 13, 1910, at the age of 90. The celebrated English statistician was awarded with the order of merit in 1907 and became the first woman to receive this honour.

She opened the first scientifically based nursing school, the Nightingale School of Nursing, in London. It was opened in 1860.

These are the five reasons why the world still embers the founder of modern nursing.

Lady with the Lamp

There is a reason why Florence Nightingale is fondly remembered as the ‘Lady with the Lamp’.

In 1854, Florence Nightingale led a group of 38 officially sanctioned women and arrived at the Barrack Hospital, Scutari (now known as Uskudar in Istanbul) to treat the sick and wounded British troops during the Crimean war that was fought between 1853 and 1856.

In this war, the Russians were on the one side and the British, French, and Ottoman Turks on the other.

Once she arrived at the hospital, she witnessed an overwhelming number of injured soldiers, many of whom had also contracted other infections.

She used to tend to patients round-the-clock, often wandering the wards at night and caring out duties with a lamp in hand. It is because of this practice, she earned the title “Lady with the Lamp.”

Florence Nightingale chose to pursue nursing at a young age, despite her parents’ objections

In the 183’'s, nursing was considered a profession of low social status, who would earn petty wages. Nurses were also subjected to frquent alcohol abuse.

When 16-year-old Nightingale announced that she felt "called" to become a nurse, her parents weren’t thrilled. But their determined daughter’s mind was made up and, in&nbsp;1850, she finally started learning the skills.

Three years later, Nightingale became the superintendent of a London-based women’s hospital.

Florence Nightingale refused to get married.

She turned down multiple proposals, including one made by a cousin named&nbsp;Henry Nicholson.

Florence Nightingale frequently wrote letters on behalf of dying or dead soldiers to their kins

Nightingale wrote to soldiers' families to tell them of their loved ones' deaths.

In a letter&nbsp;sent&nbsp;in 1856, she wrote, "It is with very sincere sorrow that I am obliged to confirm the fears of the father of the Late Howell Evans about his poor son … I have never in my life had so painful &amp; unsatisfactory a letter to write."

Florence Nightingale popularised pie chart

Though the first true pie chart was drawn in 1801, 19 years before Nightingale was born, the concept was popularised under her and hence she is also regarded as great statistician.

Among the known pie chart used by her is called ‘coxcomb’. She designed it with the help of William Farr—the British epidemiologist who is regarded as one of the founders of medical statistics.

It highlights the number of unnecessary deaths during the Crimean War as a result of preventable infections. It has become Nightingale’s most well-known statistical illustration.

An orchestra was seen playing in honour of the nurses at a vaccination centre in Madrid - the super-humans in PPE kits who are fighting the pandemic from the frontline with low salaries and high risk.

“I am not tired, I think we have to give everything we can and even if we are tired we have to keep motivated because that is what we have to do”, retired nurse hired to vaccinate people at the Wizink centre, Maria Jesus Respaldiza, 67, said.

The pandemic has changed the lives of many nurses like Maria who are working round the clock, away from their families even with foils and dustbin bags- as protection. Many nurses are being forced to pick between their loved ones and duties.

“My family put pressure on me to quit the job.... During the pandemic our relationships with family become difficult as we avoid close contact with them”, Huma Komal, a nurse from Karachi, Pakistan, was reported as saying. Like Huma, most nurses have picked service before self but our systems have failed them.

What about India?

In India, nurses are overworked because the country has just 1.7 nurses per 1,000 people. The WHO recommends a minimum of three nurses which means India has less than 43 per cent of the ideal number. Last year, the Government of India told the parliament that the country has 3.07 million registered nursing personnel. This includes nurses, midwives, and nursing assistants.

According to government figures, India's nurse-patient ratio is 1:2. Even then, India is far behind the internationally recommended standard of 1:4. At least 116 nurses have died of COVID-19 in India and this number was last updated in February 2021.

On the occasion of International Nurses Day&nbsp;that falls on May 12th, a group of doctors and other hospital staff have made a dance video to celebrate and recogniSe the efforts of nurses who are the true frontline caregivers and healers.&nbsp;

Grooving to a version of the viral Tamil track ‘Enjoy Enjaami’, with the modified lyrics being developed in-house, Doctors and other staff of the Dr Rela Institue and Medical Center in Chennai are seen enjoying their moves in the two and a half minute video.

With some medicos clad in scrubs, some in full-body PPE kits and support staff in plainclothes, the team has pulled out all stops to depict the efforts of nurses across functions in a hospital.&nbsp;

“We conceptualised this about a month ago and sought the help of a professional singer to arrange a recording studio and get the beats and tempo right. The entire thing was shot in two days, despite the hectic and herculean tasks before us. We wanted to deliver our best for the sake of our nurses, without whom nothing happens. They literally handle the Covid-19 patients and end up getting infected in large numbers, much more than doctors” Dr Deepashree, HoD, Interventional Radiology, who is also featured in the dance video told Zee media.&nbsp;

Despite the song and shoot being planned over a month ago, the singer, herself a doctor, tested positive for COVID-19, thus delaying the shoot by at least two weeks. In fact, the video only involved old clips of nurses caring for patients, as this was meant to be a secret exercise to appreciate their contributions on May 12th.&nbsp;

“Nurses don’t ever get the limelight, hence none will know the effort taken by the nurses. But, we Doctors are seen and are well-known, hence we wanted to make a contribution in this tribute to them. During tough times, cheering up each other is very important, especially as there’s a lot of gloom and fear going around… The nurses were happy and humbled about their work being recognized in this way” Dr Kavya Harika, Consultant Hepatologist said.

International Nurses Day 2021: Nurses risking their physical & mental health in fight against COVID-19

Matching the theme for the 2021 International Nurses Day which is -- Nurses: A Voice to Lead - A vision for future healthcare, perfectly fits the bill for 35-year-old Kerala male nurse P.M. Arun Kumar as he can be called the poor man`s Thomas Alva Edison on account of the various things he has made for safe handling of the Covid pandemic, and for health care professionals. 
 
Kumar after eight years of serving at the Pondicherry JIPMER hospital, got into the Kerala Health Service and from 2018 he is serving as Nursing Officer at the Idukki Medical College hospital and by now he has to credit four `inventions` that have made life easy for the hardworking medical professionals at the hospital. 
 
Kumar told IANS that with the hospital operating on a shoestring government funding and little funds available at their free disposal to get state of the art safety equipment, he on his own with the financial support of doctors at the hospital and other staff by now, has made four inventions. 
 
"Collection of swabs daily means they needed at least 8 PPE kits and when it became tough as PPE kits were more in need for their colleagues at the wards, he put on his thinking cap and with a funding of Rs 7,000 collected from doctors he made a swab collection room where the doctors in normal dress stand inside the hospital room and the patient stands outside a window. Through this, the collector of the swab need not wear a PPE kit and he can operate his foot pump which sprays the sanitiser into the gloves after the swab is collected. Then there is hair drier which has been modified and placed outside and after each sample is collected the gloves which are left outside are sanitised and dried and the next sample is collected," said Kumar. 
 
The drier which is available in the open market costs Rs 8,500 and upwards, but for Kumar, it costs just Rs 1,500. 
 
He said washing of hands by the medical professionals also had become a problem with the test positivity rate at the hospital started to climb and is hovering above 20 per cent. 
 
"Since the hospital is located in the old block, most of the water taps are old and given the present pandemic situation, it`s not safe to open the taps and hence I have converted all these taps into an elbow tap made out of SS steel bars. A regular elbow tap in the market costs Rs 1,000, while I spend Rs 60 for each to convert these into elbow taps," added Arun. 
 
Arun`s invention doesn`t end as the most recent problems faced by his hospital is the various vaccines which are kept in ice boxes and when the ice packs melt the temperature goes up and if not timely replaced with a fresh ice pack, the efficacy of the vaccines gets poor. 
 
"So what I did is I have made a digital vaccine box and from anywhere in the room we can see the inside temperature and the moment it increases, anyone can put a fresh ice pack. Before one had to open and see the ice pack and every time the box is opened, it isn`t good and now only once you need to open the box. All it cost me was Rs 500," added Arun, whose wife is also a staff nurse working in a nearby state-run hospital and gives all the support for his inventions. 
 
Yet another and the most latest invention came last week when he designed a viral transport medium tray made out of composite aluminium panels and it`s used to transport the samples of RT-PCR, which hitherto was packed in zip lock bags. 
 
"It costs me Rs 1,500 and we have a few trays and here also the money for this came from staff. If not for the encouragement of the team of our doctors working here, I would not have made all these and today, we are getting numerous calls from people who have known what we have done. Due to lack of time, I tell them the way these are to be made and when I have time, I do make it for them at cost price," added Arun.

Kumar after eight years of serving at the Pondicherry JIPMER hospital, got into the Kerala Health Service and from 2018 he is serving as Nursing Officer at the Idukki Medical College hospital and by now he has to credit four `inventions` that have made life easy for the hardworking medical professionals at the hospital. Kumar told IANS that with the hospital operating on a shoestring government funding and little funds available at their free disposal to get state of the art safety equipment, he on his own with the financial support of doctors at the hospital and other staff by now, has made four inventions. "Collection of swabs daily means they needed at least 8 PPE kits and when it became tough as PPE kits were more in need for their colleagues at the wards, he put on his thinking cap and with a funding of Rs 7,000 collected from doctors he made a swab collection room where the doctors in normal dress stand inside the hospital room and the patient stands outside a window. Through this, the collector of the swab need not wear a PPE kit and he can operate his foot pump which sprays the sanitiser into the gloves after the swab is collected. Then there is hair drier which has been modified and placed outside and after each sample is collected the gloves which are left outside are sanitised and dried and the next sample is collected," said Kumar. The drier which is available in the open market costs Rs 8,500 and upwards, but for Kumar, it costs just Rs 1,500. He said washing of hands by the medical professionals also had become a problem with the test positivity rate at the hospital started to climb and is hovering above 20 per cent. "Since the hospital is located in the old block, most of the water taps are old and given the present pandemic situation, it`s not safe to open the taps and hence I have converted all these taps into an elbow tap made out of SS steel bars. A regular elbow tap in the market costs Rs 1,000, while I spend Rs 60 for each to convert these into elbow taps," added Arun.
