Low-cost airlines IndiGo and SpiceJet are set to start their partial domestic operations from Terminal 3 of Indira Gandhi International Airport (IGI) Airport from September 5, the GMR-led Delhi International Airport Ltd (DIAL) said on Monday.

While Indigo will shift a portion of its operations from T2 to T3, SpiceJet will shift all of its domestic flights operating from T2 to T3.

Post the shift, SpiceJet flights SG 8000 to SG 8999 and IndiGo flights 6E 5000 to 6E 5999 will operate out of T3. IndiGo flights 6E 2000 to 6E 2999 will operate from T2. The operations of SpiceJet and IndiGo at T1 will continue as before.

"Shifting of some domestic flights of IndiGo and all SpiceJet flights from T2 to T3 will help in easing the pressure of fast-growing passenger traffic to carry out the capacity enhancement work of T2 effectively and efficiently," said DIAL`s Chief Operating Officer Videh Kumar Jaipuriar.

At present. GoAir fully and SpiceJet and IndiGo partially operate their respective domestic flights from T2 while Air India, Vistara and Air Asia India operate completely out of T3.

A total of 184 flights now operate from T3. With the proposed shifting, the number of flights at T3 will go up to 240 which include 24 IndiGo and 32 SpiceJet flights.

The move will result in a reduction of passenger load at T2 by up to 27 per cent which will enable the airport operator to enhance the passenger capacity of T2.

Post completion of capacity enhancement of T2, the terminal will be able to handle 18 million passengers per annum (MPPA), up from the current 15 MPPA. This will further enhance the passenger comfort and experience, DIAL said in a statement.&nbsp;

Indian budget airline SpiceJet Ltd on Friday posted its biggest-ever quarterly profit, as it flew more passengers and raised fares in the wake of the collapse of Jet Airways.

Domestic air traffic growth has been slowing in recent months in a flagging economy, but the downfall of Jet Airways, once the country's largest private carrier, this year has helped SpiceJet and market leader IndiGo attract more customers, raise fares and add routes.

Shares in SpiceJet and InterGlobe Aviation-owned IndiGo have soared 55% and 31% respectively this year, as the companies raced to fill in prime airport slots vacated by Jet.

SpiceJet's shares were up 1.3% at 137.75 rupees, in a Mumbai market that was 0.7% higher as of 0908 GMT.

SpiceJet said passenger fares rose 11% during the three months to June, a quarter in which it cancelled some flights due to the grounding of Boeing 737 MAX after the deadly crash of an Ethiopian Airlines plane in March.

India's No.2 airline by market share said operations remained "stressed" for much of the quarter due to the grounding, causing disruption to passengers' travel plans and an increase in fixed costs related to the narrow-body aircraft.

"The results would have been vastly better but for the painful grounding of the MAX aircraft," Chairman and Managing Director Ajay Singh said in a statement.

SpiceJet had estimated that the grounded planes would resume flying by July or August, but there was still uncertainty around the specific timing, it said, adding that it would induct 5-10 Boeing 737 NG planes and three Bombardier Q400 aircraft in October.

SpiceJet added 32 aircraft between April and June. Jet began grounding its planes at the start of the year and was eventually forced to stop operations in April.

SpiceJet's standalone net profit, excluding earnings of non-core units, was 2.62 billion rupees ($37.1 million) in the three months to June, compared with a loss of 380.6 million rupees a year earlier.

IndiGo operator Interglobe Aviation profit surges on Jet Air collapse

The rift in the IndiGo's top management is out in the open. Rakesh Gangwal, a US national who along with his affiliates owns about 37% in the publicly-listed InterGlobe Aviation Limited, the parent company of IndiGo, has alleged irregularities in running of the company. Fight between IndiGo promoters becomes public

Shares of Interglobe Aviation Ltd, which owns India's largest airline IndiGo, fell as much as 19% on Wednesday after one of its <a href="https://www.wionews.com/business-economy/indigo-co-founder-turns-to-sebi-over-alleged-corporate-governance-violation-234507">co-founders alleged violation of corporate governance rules</a> at the parent group.

Interglobe shares hit their lowest since March and were on course for their worst day since January 2016.

IndiGo co-founder Rakesh Gangwal on Tuesday also asked the country's securities regulator to intervene in the matter, a move that suggests that a previously reported row between Gangwal and fellow co-founder Rahul Bhatia was escalating.

"I have vigorously attempted for almost a year to persuade the company to shore up its governance standards, and all my attempts have been thwarted by the IGE Group," Gangwal said in Tuesday's letter to the Securities and Exchange Board of India (SEBI), referring to Bhatia's affiliate group.

Gangwal and his affiliates own nearly 37%, while Bhatia controls about 38% in Interglobe, giving both a major say in its strategy and plans.

At the centre of Gangwal's complaint are IGE and Bhatia's significant controlling rights over IndiGo, which Gangwal says allows them to carry out "questionable" transactions between IGE and Interglobe.

The controlling rights should not enable transactions that violate the company's code of conduct and are not in its best interests, Gangwal said in a letter to Interglobe's board in May, the company's filing to the BSE Ltd stock exchange showed on Tuesday.

Gangwal's RG Group was misleading shareholders by "putting out false allegations and incomplete and incorrect facts," Bhatia told the board in January, the filing showed.
The allegations represent a "subterfuge" to force a change of the governing structure and controlling rights at the company, Bhatia had said.

SEBI has sought a reply from Interglobe by July 19 on the matter.

Analysts at Mumbai-based ICICI Securities took note of the quarrel between the founders, but maintained their "buy" rating on Interglobe's stock, noting "strong business fundamentals".

Meanwhile, shares in IndiGo's rival SpiceJet climbed as much as 9% on Wednesday.

A representative for IndiGo did not immediately reply to a request seeking comment.

IndiGo shares slump as co-founder alleges misgovernance

One of the co-founders of <a href="https://www.wionews.com/business-economy/indigo-close-to-new-engine-deal-may-drop-pratt-for-cfm-223500">India's largest airline IndiGo</a> has alleged violation of corporate governance rules at parent company Interglobe Aviation Ltd and asked the securities regulator to intervene.

The move appears to indicate that a boardroom dispute is escalating after a report in May that the co-founders and two largest shareholders of India's largest airline were at odds over its expansion.&nbsp;

In a letter to Sebi or Securities and Exchange Board of India, co-founder Rakesh Gangwal alleged the company's board decisions were in defiance of governance protocols and laws.

Sebi, in its role as a stock market regulator, is empowered to protect the rights of investors in listed companies.

Co-founders Gangwal and Rahul Bhatia, along with their respective families, each control stakes of slightly less than 40 per cent in the airline's holding company, giving them both a major say in its strategy and plans.

"I have vigorously attempted for almost a year to persuade the company to shore up its governance standards, and all my attempts have been thwarted by the IGE Group," Gangwal said in his letter to Sebi, published on the Bombay Stock Exchange website&nbsp;

Sebi has sought a reply from Interglobe Aviation by July 19.&nbsp;

Gangwal, an American and an aviation industry veteran who spent years in senior roles at United Airlines and US Airways, has been a big factor in driving IndiGo's emergence as one of the fastest growing carriers in the world.

Bhatia, in turn, has been running things on the ground in India.

India's aviation sector has been shaken by the collapse of Jet Airways, which has sent travel prices soaring. Jet, once India's largest private carrier, was crippled by mounting losses.

IndiGo, SpiceJet and GoAir have been rushing to fill the vacuum left by Jet and gain control of its valuable slots.&nbsp;

IndiGo's fleet consists of more than 200 Airbus SE A320 and A321 narrowbody aircraft, along with just over a dozen ATR turboprops.&nbsp;

IndiGo co-founder turns to Sebi over alleged corporate governance violation

Differences between the promoters of the country's largest airline IndiGo came into public on Tuesday with Rakesh Gangwal alleging serious governance lapses by co-founder Rahul Bhatia who had earlier termed his demands as unreasonable.

With the issues brewing for nearly a year, Gangwal has sought markets regulator <a href="https://www.wionews.com/business-economy/indigo-shares-slump-as-co-founder-alleges-misgovernance-234531">Sebi's intervention</a> to address the problems. Now, fearing the impact of the row on employees morale and operations, IndiGo CEO has written a letter to employees. The CEO wrote in the letter that the issues between promoters have "nothing to do" with IndiGo and its functioning. He also said the the airline's "mission, direction and growth strategy remains unchanged, and firmly in place".

As the differences between the founder-partners are a result of fault in IndiGo's existing structure and strategy, including differences pace of expansion, use of aircraft for overseas operations, experts say the ongoing row can lower the morale of the employees and can result in delay in decision making that can impact its overall operations.

Some experts say the promoters' spat could even lead to IndiGo's fall. The differences also stem from the different background of the airline promoters. Gangwal is a veteran aviation professional with rich experience in management positions at top airlines. He is reportedly in favour of aggressive expansion in both Indian and international markets. Bhatia, meanwhile, has a background in travel and hospitality sector and he prefers a cautious approach.

The differences have cropped up on the overseas expansion plans of the airline where Gangwal and Bhatia camps have their own differences. The other point of difference is the use of wide-body aircraft vis-a-vis narrow-body. Gangwal is in favour of narrow-body aircraft like Airbus A-321 Neos for its international operations, and codeshare agreements with other global carriers to cater to long-haul passengers whereas Bhatia sees higher value in wide-bodied aircraft for its international expansion.

The continuing dispute between the promoters is already impacting the share price of the airline and the IndiGo share price is already down by over 11 per cent today.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;

As IndiGo feud casts a shadow on operations, CEO writes to employees

India has requested Pakistan to let Prime Minister Narendra Modi's aircraft fly over its airspace to Bishkek in Kyrgyzstan where he has to attend the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) summit on June 13 and June 14, said a senior government official.

Pakistan had fully closed its airspace on February 26 after an Indian Air Force (IAF) strike on a Jaish-e-Mohammed (JeM) terror camp in Balakot. Since then, it has only opened two routes, both of them pass through southern Pakistan, of the total 11.

"We have requested Pakistan to let the PM's plane fly over its airspace through one of the routes that has not been opened as yet. The PM has to attend the SCO meet on June 13 and June 14," a senior government official said.

Pakistan had given special permission to India's then external affairs minister Sushma Swaraj to fly directly through Pakistani airspace to attend the SCO Foreign Ministers' meet in Bishkek, Kyrgyzstan, on May 21.

Apart from the two routes through southern Pakistan, the neighbouring country's airspace remains closed for commercial airliners.

The IAF announced on May 31 that all temporary restrictions imposed on Indian airspace post the Balakot airstrike have been removed. However, it is unlikely to benefit any commercial airliners unless Pakistan reciprocates and opens its complete airspace.

Among Indian airlines, the international operations of Air India and IndiGo have been affected by the closure of Pakistani airspace.

IndiGo, India's largest airline by a share in the domestic passenger market, has been unable to start direct flights from Delhi to Istanbul due to the closure of Pakistani airspace.

The low-cost carrier started the Delhi-Istanbul flight in March this year. It has to take the longer route every time over the Arabian Sea and make a stop either at Doha in Qatar or at Ahmedabad in Gujarat for refuelling.

Similarly, full-service carrier Air India is unable to fly non-stop flights from Delhi to the US since the closure of Pakistani airspace.

<a href="https://www.wionews.com/business-economy/indigo-shares-rise-3-per-cent-post-q4-results-222209">India's biggest airline, IndiGo</a>, is close to a decision on engines that could mark a dramatic shift away from Pratt &amp; Whitney towards its French-American rival CFM but a final decision is only expected later in June, according to three people aware of the matter.

IndiGo has an order book of 430 Airbus planes of the A320neo family, of which the first 150 aircraft were to be powered by engines from United Technologies Corp's Pratt &amp; Whitney.

The Indian airline is now running a bidding process in which Pratt and CFM, jointly owned by General Electric and Safran, are competing to provide engines for the remaining 280 planes, two of the people said.

"The competition is going on ... nothing has been finalised yet. The anticipation is to get it done by the Paris air show but these things tend to go down to the wire," said one of the people, adding that Pratt will not let go easily and CFM is pushing very hard to woo the airline.

The air show is from June 17-23.

IndiGo declined to comment. Pratt did not respond to an email seeking comment.

A CFM spokeswoman said it would not comment on potential engine orders, but added that India is an important market.

Although the Pratt engines fitted on the A320neo aircraft are more fuel-efficient than its rivals, there have consistently been issues with them since they entered into service in 2016, forcing IndiGo to ground its planes several times.

While Pratt has found a fix for some of the problems and some others are expected to be fixed later this year, the snags are causing "a brand and reputational issue for the airline", said another of the sources.

"With IndiGo now having ambitions to fly to Europe and expand overseas that becomes a bigger consideration, and it's not all about the edge on fuel," said this source.

India's&nbsp;budget airline SpiceJet Ltd is examining the prospect of taking over widebody <a href="https://www.wionews.com/business-economy/indigo-forecasts-strong-year-as-jet-airways-collapse-boosts-profit-222065">jets </a>previously operated by Jet Airways Ltd, but initial studies show they need significant maintenance work, its chairman said on Saturday.

"Certainly a gap has been created and there seems to be an opportunity but it is also a business that we don`t know very much about. A higher risk business," he told Reuters on the sidelines of an airline industry conference in Seoul.&nbsp;

"We are exploring it. We'll see. If it looks like it is significantly profitable we can do it."

Leasing or buying widebody jets not previously operated by Jet are another possibility, he said.

SpiceJet took over the leases of 25 Boeing Co 737 jets previously operated by Jet in April and May.

The carrier plans to add another 35 planes throughout the financial year ending March 31, 2020, including some more ex-Jet aircraft on lease, some Q400 turboprops and "hopefully" 737 MAX jets after regulators approve the return to service of the grounded model, Singh said.

SpiceJet had a 13.1% share of India`s domestic market in April, according to government statistics, behind IndiGo's 49.9% and Air India`s 13.9%.

Singh said IndiGo's increasing dominance of the domestic market was becoming a cause for concern to the broader industry.

"I think the government will have to explore what possibilities exist" for remedies, he said. "We haven`t thought about it as yet. The government has just been elected and we are in the middle of a massive expansion ourselves."

IndiGo shares rise 3% post Q4 results

Interglobe Aviation Ltd, owner of Indian budget airline IndiGo, forecast a strong year ahead after the collapse of Jet Airways&nbsp;helped the company report a fivefold jump in fourth-quarter profit.

IndiGo, the country's largest airline by market share, gained passengers in recent months after Jet Airways shut down operations in April, having been forced to ground its fleet since early this year.

IndiGo also gained by optimising its domestic network and growing its international routes, Chief Executive Ronojoy Dutta said on an analyst call.

"Jet Airways' cessation of service helped our performance in the last week of February and the whole of March," Dutta said.

Interglobe shares set a record closing high, up 2.5% at 1,662.15 rupees in a broader Mumbai market which ended up 0.7%.

Dutta said the shutdown at Jet increased revenue per available seat kilometre by between 3% and 4%. That number, a measure of the carrier's operating earnings, rose 5.9% in total to 3.63 rupees in January through March.

Jet's troubles have allowed IndiGo and other carriers such as SpiceJet to raise prices on some routes, offsetting some of the losses they faced last fiscal year because of high fuel prices and intense competition.

IndiGo's passenger yield, a measure of airfares, rose 12% during the quarter.

Higher fares

CEO Dutta said Jet's grounding helped IndiGo raise fares, but it will see the boost ease by June except in some international markets. "By and large international routes are doing well. We are happy with the utilisation and profitability," he said.

Available seat kilometres, a measure of the airline's passenger carrying capacity, is expected to rise 30% in the current fiscal year, with half of that in the domestic market and the other half in international, Dutta said.

The airline said that while it is studying the use of wide-body planes on international routes, it does not plan to place an order imminently. It will, however, take deliveries of 53 narrow-body Airbus planes and 11 ATR turboprops in the current fiscal year.

IndiGo has also seen significant improvements over the past year in the performance of engines made by Pratt &amp; Whitney (part of United Technologies), troubles with which had forced it to ground planes in the past, Wolfgang Prock-Schauer, the airline's president and chief operating officer, said on the call.

"For most of the issues resolutions have been found and implemented," Prock-Schauer said, adding the group is working with Pratt on two areas, one of which is expected to be fixed in engines to be delivered from June and the other by September.

Until then the airline has sufficient spare engines, he said.

InterGlobe's profit for the quarter rose to 5.9 billion rupees from 1.18 billion a year earlier.

Trouble for Jet Airways: Market share drops

A male passenger was caught smoking in the lavatory of an IndiGo flight while it was on its way from Goa to Delhi on Thursday.

The passenger, Narendra Singh, who was onboard flight 6E 637, entered the aircraft lavatory and started smoking following which the cabin crew got an alert. In a swift action, the crew alerted the pilot about the passenger&nbsp;smoking in the lavatory.

The aircraft landed at Delhi airport 5.55 pm and the pilot immediately informed the ATC for aviation security help.

Subsequently, Narendra Singh was handed over to aviation security CISF and later, the Delhi Police took him in custody.

Confirming the incident, DCP (Airport) Sanjay Bhatia said, "We have registered a non-cognizable report against the accused&nbsp;&nbsp;passenger on the complaint of IndiGo staff."

A similar incident was reported earlier also when a passenger of onboard of the IndiGo flight 6E-947, from Ahmedabad to Goa, was caught smoking in the aircraft lavatory on Christmas day.

Shortage of pilots continued to hamper budget carrier IndiGos operations with <a href="http://www.wionews.com/videos/indigo-airlines-cancels-47-flights-hundreds-of-passengers-affected-9294">the airline cancelling as many as 30 flights Tuesday</a> from across stations and passengers allegedly being forced to buy last-minute high fares for its flights, a source said.

On Monday also, the Gurugram-headquartered airline had pulled 32 flights from its network.

On the other hand, there was no indication of any probe by the aviation regulator into the cancellation of such a large number of flights by the airline since last Saturday.

IndiGo has cancelled 30 flights for Tuesday due to the ongoing pilots' issue. Most of the flights have been cancelled from Kolkata, Hyderabad and Chennai, the source said.

While eight flights are not being operated from Kolkata, another five flights are cancelled from Hyderabad and four each from Bangalore and Chennai, among others, he added.

The source also alleged that IndiGo was forcing passengers to either buy last-minute fares or offering them alternate flights with one-stop connectivity with long transit time.

Response to the queries sent to IndiGo and Directorate General of Civil Aviation on this issue was awaited.

In a statement on Sunday, the airline had blamed on weather for disruption in operations across its network.

"As part of recovering our schedule, the positioning of the crew and aircraft had to be readjusted. As a result, a number of flights were cancelled, it had said without giving any specific number of flights were cancelled.

<a href="http://www.wionews.com/business-economy/indigo-buys-stake-in-icelands-wow-air-180478">Budget carrier IndiGo</a> has become the first domestic airline to have longer range Airbus A321neo plane in its fleet with the first aircraft arriving Saturday morning in New Delhi from the European aviation major Airbus' Hamburg facility in Germany, an airline source said.

The maiden A321neo (new engine option), VT-IUA, landed at 9.06 am at Terminal-3 of the Indira Gandhi International Airport in Delhi and was accorded the traditional water canon salute on arrival, the source told PTI.

The new aircraft has joined the fleet after a delay of one month. It was to join the fleet on November 29 as per the earlier schedule, he said.

The induction of the first A321neo, of the 150 on order, will help IndiGo spread its wings to medium-haul international destinations.

Flights of up to six hours duration come under medium- long-haul category of operations.

<a href="http://www.wionews.com/india-news/mumbai-lucknow-indigo-flight-grounded-after-bomb-threat-call-184188">IndiGo </a>now has 204 planes in its fleet, including one A321neo, 65 A320neos, 126 A320ceos (current engine option), and 12 ATRs, the source said.

The longer range A321neo plane has been delivered to the airline at a time when it is struggling with the frequent glitches in the Pratt &amp; Whitney engines, powering these planes, and taking these aircraft out of operations on a regular basis.

These engine-run aircraft have been facing glitches frequently since their induction in the fleet by IndiGo and GoAir in 2016, with several instances of mid-air engine shutdowns.

But the US engine maker has failed to come up with any tangible solution to fix these glitches so far despite the frequent grounding of these planes and passengers' safety at risk.

The airline has already announced its plans to launch services to Istanbul and has also signed a code-share pact with the Turkish Airlines for seamless connectivity to 20 global destinations for its passengers from Istanbul and onwards.

In turn, passengers of the Turkish national carrier will have access to all destinations operated by IndiGo within India.

IndiGo at present operates over 1,300 daily flights to 52 domestic and 15 international destinations.

The airline had in two tranches placed an order for 430 A320neos (180 in 2011 and 250 in 2015) with Airbus. Later, it converted 150 of these 430 planes to A321neos.

US private equity firm Indigo Partners has agreed to buy a stake in Iceland's loss-making carrier WOW Air, the no-frills company said Friday, one day after Icelandair ditched plans to buy it.

Indigo, which also owns stakes in Wizz Air and Frontier Airlines among others, and WOW Air did not disclose the terms of the preliminary agreement.

But a WOW statement said its "chief executive officer and primary shareholder, Skuli Mogensen, would remain a principal investor in WOW upon completion of the transaction."

Meanwhile, Bill Franke, managing partner of Indigo Partners, said it had "a strategic vision for the airline, and looks forward to working with its employees and agents to deliver that vision."

The airline, founded in 2011 and which flies to 25 destinations in Europe and North America, posted a pre-tax loss of almost $60 million in the first half of the year.

On Thursday, Icelandair announced that its planned acquisition of WOW -- which local media estimated to be worth two billion kronur (around 16 million euros, $18 million) -- would not go ahead.

Icelandair provided no explanation but the airline's financial woes are believed to be worse than previously thought.

Indigo Airline's servers down at all airports, passengers left stranded

A passenger was removed from an IndiGo flight on Monday after he tried to open the flight's cockpit to charge his phone; news agency ANI reported.

The flight bound for Kolkata was travelling from Mumbai airport.

The investigation is underway as flight crew handed over the man to Mumbai police.

Last week, a Jet Airways flight was&nbsp;turned back to Mumbai mid-air after the crew forgot to select switch to maintain cabin pressure leading to nose and ear bleeds in several passengers.

The passengers of the Mumbai-Jaipur 9W 697 flight also complained of a headache while 30 out of the total 166 suffered ear and nosebleeds. Oxygen masks were deployed.&nbsp;

The crew has been taken off duty and Aircraft Accident Investigation Bureau (AAIB) has started an investigation, the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) informed, ANI reported.&nbsp;

The Ministry of Civil Aviation (MoCA) has sought a report from the Directorate General of Civil Aviation over the incident.

Taking cognisance of the matter, the MoCA said that the crew members who were on duty for the particular flight are being de-rostered on account of the incident.

Another major incident raised concerns over flight operations in India after an Ahmedabad-bound IndiGo flight suffered tyre burst while taking off from Mumbai airport.

All the 185 passengers on 6E 361, an A320 flight, were reported to be safe.

Indian&nbsp;airlines&nbsp;are turning to the international market in search of better returns as the intensifying fight for a bigger share of the world's fastest growing domestic market - where price is king - drives down profits.

While global&nbsp;airlines' profits have been strong since 2015 - though with wide regional variations -Indian carriers are struggling to remain profitable, despite filling nearly 90 percent of their seats and benefiting from a more than doubling of domestic passenger numbers over the last four years.

"It is an incredibly tough domestic market, very price sensitive," said Stephen Barnes, chief financial officer of Singapore&nbsp;Airlines, which operates an&nbsp;Indian carrier, Vistara, in a joint venture with the Tata Group.

"Commanding a premium for a premium product is hard to do. From our perspective, we invested in order to see the business grow internationally. If you look at the results of&nbsp;Indian&nbsp;airlines&nbsp;their performance is better internationally."

Promotions such as $50 one-way tickets on the two-hour flight from Mumbai to Delhi are easy to find and, with&nbsp;airlines&nbsp;expected to take delivery of more than 500 aircraft over the next five years, pressure on fares and profits is increasing.

India&nbsp;is one of the cheapest domestic airline markets in the world, with an average fare of 13 cents per kilometre flown, according to data from travel firm Rome2Rio, less than half the 27 cents per km average in China and the United States.

Airlines&nbsp;including Vistara, SpiceJet Ltd and InterGlobe Aviation Ltd's IndiGo are in talks to buy or lease widebody aircraft as they firm up international growth plans to boost profitability.

&nbsp;

INTERNATIONAL OPPORTUNITIES

There is huge potential for international travel from&nbsp;India, where the domestic aviation market has grown about 20 per cent annually in recent years.

Only 0.3 per cent of the 1.3 billion population currently travel abroad for a holiday every year, a fraction of the estimated 100 million&nbsp;Indians who could potentially afford to do so, according to an analysis of household income by aviation consultancy, CAPA.

The international market is dominated by foreign carriers but the market share of&nbsp;Indian&nbsp;airlines including Air&nbsp;India&nbsp;and Jet Airways has been climbing, helped by policies that limit access by foreign carriers, and reached about 38 per cent in 2017, up from 31 per cent a decade earlier.

Foreign&nbsp;airlines&nbsp;such as Emirates and Hong Kong's Cathay Pacific Airways have reached the limit of flights into&nbsp;India&nbsp;allowed under bilateral agreements and New Delhi has not extended additional rights, creating an opening for domestic carriers to grow, said Binit Somaia, director for South Asia at CAPA.

"Demand is there, income levels are rising and people want to travel internationally," he said.

Jet Airways is considering launching new flights from Mumbai to Sydney, two sources with knowledge of the matter said, while Vistara is planning to order six Boeing Co 787 aircraft and will expand its narrowbody fleet of Airbus A320neos as it starts international flights, sources have said.

A Jet Airways spokesman said the airline "continuously reviews its fleet and network plan ... to realise greater synergy with its business strategy."

&nbsp;

DOMESTIC COMPETITION

In the domestic market, which provides crucial connections for international flights,&nbsp;airlines&nbsp;have been jockeying for position at a time when one-time leader Air&nbsp;India&nbsp;has been losing market share to rivals with far lower costs, such as IndiGo.

The&nbsp;Indian government last month failed to attract a single bidder by the deadline for its 76 per cent stake sale in the loss-making national carrier.

Revenue per available seat kilometre, a measure combining&nbsp;airfares and seats filled, has been falling at&nbsp;Indian&nbsp;airlines&nbsp;due to stiff competition at a time when the oil price has risen nearly 50 percent in the last year.

IndiGo last month reported a steep fall in quarterly profit due to higher fuel prices and continued pressure on yields, a proxy for&nbsp;airfares.

IndiGo has lifted the proportion of its capacity dedicated to international flights to 15 per cent, from 11 per cent, in the last year and is seeking regulatory approvals needed to operate long-haul flights, Rahul Bhatia, the company's chairman, said during an analyst call.

SpiceJet and IndiGo are the only two listed&nbsp;Indian&nbsp;airlines&nbsp;to post a profit for the last 13 quarters consecutively.

Analysts say SpiceJet has achieved this by maximising its aircraft utilisation and also flying less competitive routes where it can have a better control over fares, helping protect yields.

Even so, it plans to expand its international flights as it starts taking delivery of its Boeing 737 MAX aircraft from August. The planes, which have a range of six hours and can reach destinations such as Singapore, Hong Kong and Bangkok, will mainly be deployed on international routes.

Infrastructure constraints at major&nbsp;Indian airports like Mumbai and Delhi, where daytime slots are hard to get, also make going international a better option as&nbsp;airlines&nbsp;can utilise night-time slots, a SpiceJet official told Reuters.

"International is the only way out," the official said.
