<p>The Gujarat high court announced on Saturday (April 29)&nbsp;that it will continue hearing Congress leader Rahul Gandhi's plea on May 2 in which he is contesting the Surat sessions court's decision to deny a stay of his conviction in a criminal defamation case stemming from his remark regarding the "Modi surname."</p>

<p>Gandhi filed a criminal revision&nbsp;application&nbsp;with the Gujarat high court, challenging the ruling of the sessions court. Justice Hemant Prachchhak took up the case, as reported by PTI.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Gandhi's readmission as a member of Parliament could be possible if the high court accepts his appeal.&nbsp;After the case was brought before the high court judge&nbsp;Justice Gita Gopi on Wednesday for an urgent hearing, she decided not to hear it.</p>

<p>The court of Justice Prachchhak was then given the case.&nbsp;Gandhi is being represented in the high court by renowned attorney and Congress politician Abhishek Manu Singhvi.</p>

<p>On March 23, a metropolitan magistrate's court in Surat condemned the former president of the Congress to two years in prison after holding him guilty of violating Indian Penal Code (IPC) sections 499 and 500 (criminal defamation) in a case brought by Gujarat MLA for the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) Purnesh Modi in 2019.</p>

<p>He filed a petition for a stay of the conviction along with a challenge to the ruling before the Surat sessions court.</p>

<p>The judge on April 20 granted him bail but declined to stay the conviction.&nbsp;Gandhi's "How come all thieves have Modi surname" comment caused Purnesh Modi to initiate a criminal defamation lawsuit against him.</p>

<p>According to statistics from the Department of Consumer Affairs, sugar's average retail price throughout all of India on Friday was Rs 42.24 per kg, which was somewhat higher than the level from a year earlier when it was Rs 41.31. The country is expected to produce 327 lakh tonnes (LT) of sugar during the 2022–23 crop year (October–September), down from the 359 lakh tonnes produced during the previous crop year.</p>

<p>Wrestling Federation of India (WFI) chief&nbsp;Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh released a video Thursday amid sexual harassment accusations saying&nbsp;instead of living such a life, he would wish that death takes him in its embrace.&nbsp;</p>

<p>This comes as Supreme Court is all set to hear the petition moved by India's decorated women wrestlers, seeking registration of FIR against the wrestling body chief.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The country's top wrestlers Vinesh Phogat, Sakshi Malik, and Bajrang Punia, have&nbsp;levelled accusations against Brij Bhushan Singh of sexually harassing athletes, a charge that the body chief refutes.</p>

<p>Indian wrestlers are demonstrating and seeking stringent action. Brij Bhushan said in a video, "Friends, the day I introspect on what I gained or lost, and feel that I no longer have the strength to fight; the day I feel helpless, I would wish death as I won't be living a life like that. Instead of living such a life, I would wish that death takes me in its embrace."</p>

<p>Amid this, a statement by the Indian Olympic Association (IOA) president PT Usha drew strong rebuke by many when she said the wrestlers are tarnishing the image of the country and they should have approached the body instead of taking to the streets.&nbsp;</p>

But they did not. This isn't good for our sports. They should have shown some discipline," Usha told local reporters.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The protesting wrestlers termed her remarks "insensitive."</p>

<p>Sakshi Malik, the first Indian female wrestler to win a medal at the Olympics, said, "Being a woman athlete, she (PT Usha) is not listening to other women athletes. We have followed her since childhood and were inspired by her. Where is the indiscipline here? We are holding a peaceful protest."</p>

<p>Vinesh Phogat, the Commonwealth Games (CWG) and World Championship medalist, and Olympic gold medalist Abhinav Bindra also supported Malik.&nbsp;</p>

'I would wish death...': India's wrestling body chief releases video amid sexual harassment allegations

<p>The Delhi High Court on Friday (April 28) allowed a minor Nepalese girl who had been the victim of gang rape to have her pregnancy medically terminated at the Lok Nayak Jai Prakash (LNJP) Hospital since it had lasted longer than the legal limit of 24 weeks.</p>

<p>“Accordingly in view of the fact that the child is a rape victim and taking a humanitarian view of the matter though the child and her family are Nepalese citizens, this court directs that the medical termination of pregnancy be effected as soon as possible by the doctors of the LNJP hospital,” said a single judge bench of Justice Prathiba Singh after interacting with the medical board at the hospital and the mother of the victim, as reported by The Indian Express.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The&nbsp;High Court (HC)&nbsp;further ordered the LNJP hospital's medical staff to make sure the girl receives the best treatment possible as well as post-operative care so she can recuperate and only then be discharged.&nbsp;</p>

<p>According to the HC, the current order is being issued given the specific facts and circumstances of the case.</p>

<p>“The family has assured that in case the foetus is born alive considering the age of the foetus, the family would give adequate care in the nursery of LNJP,” the court recorded.</p>

<p>Anuj Kapoor, an attorney representing the survivor's&nbsp;mother, stated that if a situation like that occurred, "we will revive the writ petition and will seek appropriate directions." The judge, however, stated that while they have permission to file the application, they must care for the infant in the interim period.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The medical board's opinion is that a pregnancy can be terminated, but there are some risks due to the girl's low haemoglobin and the baby's gestational age of 27 weeks. This information was provided to the court by two doctors from the Department of Obstetrics and Gynaecology and Neonatology, LNJP, who had joined the hearing virtually.</p>

<p>The mother received counselling about the risks from both doctors, who testified before the court. They are aware of the risks involved, Kapoor further stated.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The petitioner's claim was that in October 2022, a brutal&nbsp;case of gang rape occurred on her daughter in Nepal. According to information provided to the court, the petitioner and her entire family are citizens of Nepal, and the girl's parents both had jobs in India.</p>

<p>The girl moved in with her parents in India in March of this year, according to Kapoor's earlier argument, which claimed that's when she discovered she was pregnant.</p>

<p>According to information previously provided to the court, she was already 25 weeks pregnant when she approached the relevant authority or the doctors to request an abortion. The mother then went to the HC to ask for permission to end her daughter's pregnancy because it had lasted longer than the legal limit of 24 weeks.
