The Indian Armed Forces launched Operation Sindoor, carrying out a series of precision strikes targeting nine terror targets, including terror camps and launchpads, in Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Kashmir (PoK). The Ministry of Defence confirmed the strikes early Wednesday, calling them a “focused, measured and non-escalatory” response to the recent attack in Jammu and Kashmir’s Pahalgam, where terrorists brutally killed 26 civilians after identifying and segregating them.

India launched Operation Sindoor targeting terror infrastructure in Pakistan, specifically camps linked to Jaish-e-Mohammed and Lashkar-e-Taiba. The Indian Army, Air Force, and Foreign Ministry jointly briefed the media, revealing precision strikes aimed only at terror hubs while avoiding civilian or military casualties. This operation is India’s response to the Pahalgam terror attack.

India strikes Pak: Bollywood backs army after cross-border operation

In the press briefing on Monday (May 7) on Operation Sindoor, India's foreign secretary, Vikram Misri revealed that India has given inputs about 'The Resistance Front' (TRF) - the terror offshoot of Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT) - to the United Nations (UN).
"A group calling itself “The Resistance Front” has claimed responsibility for the attack. This group is a front for the UN-proscribed Pakistani terrorist group, Lashkar-e-Taiba. It is notable that India had given inputs about the TRF in the half-yearly report to the monitoring team of the UN's 1267 Sanctions Committee in May and November 2024, bringing out its role as a cover for Pakistan-based terrorist groups," Misri said.
Misri further informed that in December 2023, India had informed the monitoring team about Lashkar and Jaish-e-Mohammad operating through small terror groups such as the TRF. He said that Pakistan exposed itself when it attempted to remove references to TRF from the UNSC press statement.
"Pakistan's pressure to remove references to TRF in the April 25 UN Security Council Press Statement is notable in this regard."
"Investigations into the Pahalgam terror attack have brought out the communication notes of terrorists in and to Pakistan. The claims made by the Resistance Front and their reposting by known social media handles of the Lashkar-e-Taiba speak for themselves. Identification of the attackers based on eyewitness accounts, as well as other information available to law enforcement agencies, has also progressed. Our intelligence has developed an accurate picture of the planners and backers of this team. The features of this attack also tie in with Pakistan's long track record of perpetrating cross-border terror in India, which is well documented, and beyond question," Misri stated in his statement after Operation Sindoor.

India's Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri revealed the objective of the Pahalgam terror attack in the press briefing held on Wednesday (May 7) and said that it was done to undermine the normalcy returning to Jammu and Kashmir. He added that it was done to impact economy and tourism in teh Kashmir valley, stating that a record 23 million tourists visited J&K in 2024.
"The attack was clearly driven by the objective of undermining the normalcy returning to Jammu and Kashmir. In particular, it was designed to impact the mainstay of the economy, tourism, with a record 23 million tourists visiting the valley last year. The calculation, presumably, was that harming growth and development in the Union Territory would help keep it backwards and create fertile ground for continued cross-border terrorism from Pakistan. The manner of the attack was also driven by the objective of provoking communal discord, both in Jammu and Kashmir and the rest of the Nation. It is to the credit of the government and the people of India that these designs were foiled," Misri said in the briefing.

The Indian stock market ended Wednesday’s session on a muted but steady note, with the Sensex closing near the 80,800 mark and the Nifty finishing just above 24,200. The Sensex closed in the green, up over 100 points after a volatile session during which the index see-sawed between gains and losses. Meanwhile, the Nifty closed marginally higher after gyrating wildly, reflecting caution amid geopolitical uncertainty but also confidence in India’s economic fundamentals.
Early in the session, benchmark indices opened with losses — the BSE Sensex at 79,948.80, down 0.86 per cent, and Nifty 50 down 0.6 per cent to 24,233.30. However, strong intraday recoveries were led by gains in defence and aerospace stocks such as Hindustan Aeronautics, Bharat Dynamics, BEL, Mazagon Dock, and Paras Defence, which rose between 1.3 per cent and 4 per cent amid expectations of increased government spending on strategic sectors.
While auto, FMCG, IT, and pharma sectors posted gains, metal, realty, and energy indices lagged. The Indian rupee remained stable, and bond yields showed little change — suggesting that institutional investors perceive the strikes as tactical and unlikely to trigger prolonged conflict.

Pakistan markets plunge on panic selling
Pakistani stocks endured a rough day as investors panicked over potential military escalation, international isolation, and further economic deterioration. The KSE-100 index closed at 1,10,009.03, down 3,560 points, making it one of the steepest one-day falls in recent memory — despite the index trading well above the 1,00,000-point mark in recent months.
Losses were widespread across banking, telecom, cement, and energy sectors, all of which are sensitive to external shocks. Pakistan’s economic fundamentals, already strained by high inflation, low foreign reserves, and stringent IMF conditions, were ill-equipped to absorb the added pressure from rising cross-border hostilities.
The Pakistani rupee weakened further in forex markets, and analysts warned of increased volatility if the situation on the Line of Control (LoC) worsens.

Operation Sindoor: Pakistan Stocks Crash, Indian Markets Stay Volatile

Indian financial markets are in an initial turmoil following the airstrike by the Indian Armed Forces. GIFT Nifty, a key indicator for Indian equities, started on an upward trend, trading at 24,446.5, marking an increase of 0.91%, trading up by 220 points. This reflects the bullish opening of Indian Equities today. This also implies institutional investors are expecting limited escalation and a swift containment of the conflict.

It is also to be noted that this resilience comes on the back of strong corporate earnings reported in the previous sessions and sustained FPI inflows in a few select sectors.
The Indian Rupee is facing downward pressure in the non-deliverable forward (NDF) market. It is expected to perform weaker against the US Dollar. This reflected heightened geopolitical tensions following Indian airstrikes under Operation Sindoor.

The parallel can be drawn with the past events, such as the 2019 Balakot air strikes, where NIFTY 50 experienced a modest 1.8% decline, suggesting that markets often stabilise even after initial volatility if further escalation is avoided. The sharpest market correction was during the Indian Parliament attack on December 13, 2001, by -13.9%.
Investors are eager about statements from the Indian government, military and diplomatic channels to monitor the possibility of further escalation or resolution.
Sectors such as defence, aviation, energy and gold-linked investments are likely to remain in focus.
With trading sentiment delicately balanced between geopolitical developments and economic fundamentals, markets could swing in any direction.

The Indian Rupee is facing downward pressure in the non-deliverable forward (NDF) market. It is expected to perform weaker against the US Dollar. This reflected heightened geopolitical tensions following Indian airstrikes under Operation Sindoor. Also Read: PM Modi calls India-UK free trade agreement ‘historic’. What is an FTA and why does it matter? Historical Context The parallel can be drawn with the past events, such as the 2019 Balakot air strikes, where NIFTY 50 experienced a modest 1.8% decline, suggesting that markets often stabilise even after initial volatility if further escalation is avoided. Market jittery following Operation Sindoor: What is the sentiment of investors?

Briefing the country on Operation Sindoor, women officers Colonel Sofiya Qureshi, Wing Commander Vyomika Singh and Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri have said that the Pahalgam terror attack is the biggest attack on Indian civilians after the Mumbai terror attacks in 2008. They said that the main reason for the attack was to hamper the tourism and development of Jammu and Kashmir. They also said that the attack was done to provoke religious riots in the country.
Naming 'The Resistance Front' (TRF), Misri said that Lashkar-E-Taiba (LeT) and Jaish-e-Mohammad (JeM) used the group for terror activities in India. He also said that Pakistan has a history of shielding terror groups and terror outfits. He said that the Pakistani government has not taken any step in handling the terror groups but has resorted to blame game.
"Pakistan has emerged as safe haven for terrorists in the world. Banned international terrorists find it safe from being punished in this country. Pakistan is also known for deliberately misleading the world and international platforms...Despite a fortnight having passed, there has been no demonstrable step from Pakistan against terrorists' infrastructure in its area," Misri said.
Further, Misri highlighted that India exercised its right to respond under Operation Sindoor.
"Our intelligence indicated that further attacks against India are impending. Thus, compulsion, both to deter and prevent and hence earlier this morning, India exercised its right to respond to deter such more cross-border terrorism... Our actions were measured and non-escalatory, proportionate and responsible. They focused on dismantling terrorists' infrastructure," Misri added.

New Delhi has also blocked the Instagram accounts of several Pakistani cricketers and celebrities. Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi had said, "I say to the whole world.
