The Indian Government has informed the parliament that banks have written off nearly 129 billion dollars in the last 5 years. what's significant is that nearly 50 per cent of the write off belongs to large industrial houses.

The finance ministry on Tuesday said top 50 wilful defaulters including Gitanjali Gems Limited, Era Infra Engineering Limited, REI Agro Limited, and ABG Shipyard Limited owe $105,40 million or Rs 87,295 crore to banks and financial institutions.

For the fourth quarter alone, total losses in the state-run banking sector were 626.81 billion rupees or 6.26 lakh crore.
