Pakistan PM Imran Khan can be ousted? What can happen after no-confidence vote?

The twists and turns continue in Pakistan’s political scene as prime minister Imran Khan faces a tough no-trust motion on March 25. The country’s National Assembly speaker Asad Qaiser convened the assembly session on that day after around 100 lawmakers from the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) and Pakistan Peoples' Party (PPP) submitted the no-confidence motion.

The Imran Khan-led Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) government has come under a lot of pressure for the ongoing economic crisis and major inflation in the country. After the opposition submitted the motion, the speaker summoned the session under the power given to him by Article 54 (3) and 254 of the Constitution of Pakistan.

According to PTI, the delay in this case is due to the high-profile 48th summit of the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) starting from March 22 at the Parliament House.

Earlier, the opposition parties threatened to stage a sit-inside the parliament if the session was not called on time regarding the proposed no-confidence motion. The announcement resulted in a softening of tone on the oppositions who made it clear that there would be no disruptions in the proceedings of the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) Conference of Foreign Ministers (CFM).

According to The Guardian, Imran Khan has also increased his attack on the West ahead of the vote.

With the no-confidence motion just a few days away, both the ruling party and the opposition are trying to flex their muscles. The ruling party issued show-cause notices to all its dissident lawmakers for defection and asked for explanation regarding their actions within March 26. It will allow them to try to disqualify the dissidents as members of the National Assembly on grounds of defection.

Pak PM Imran Khan is in trouble, Joint opposition expected to submit no-confidence motion

The Pakistan Army's top brass, led by General Qamar Javed Bajwa, has reportedly asked Prime Minister Imran Khan to resign after the conference of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) scheduled for this month.

Pakistani media reports stated that the decision to oust Imran Khan was taken by General Bajwa and three other senior lieutenants generals in a meeting that took place after Bajwa and the country's spymaster, Lieutenant General Nadeem Anjum, met Imran Khan. It was reported that all four military leaders decided not to give any escape routes to Imran Khan.

Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI), incidentally, is hoping that its trump card of former Army Chief Raheel Sharif's meeting Bajwa at the behest of Imran Khan will save the government.

However, Raheel Sharif also failed in his mission, as noted by the local media in its reports. Amid the looming no-confidence motion against his government, Imran Khan met Army Chief Bajwa on Friday.

The meeting is being speculated to have revolved around the recent political developments in the country, with the local media reporting that the agenda could have included the upcoming OIC summit in Pakistan, the ongoing unrest in Balochistan and the no-confidence motion against the Imran Khan government.

The majority of PTI leaders are waiting for the outcome of this meeting amidst the fragile political situation in the country, Capital TV, a Pakistani media channel reported. The meeting is also being seen as an attempt by Imran Khan to get back in the good books of the Pakistani establishment, which is the Pakistani Army, to save his government.

The fissures between Imran Khan and the Army establishment became visible when the former in his profanity-laced speech on March 11 had rebuffed Army Chief Bajwa's advice to not use derogatory remarks against Opposition leaders.

"I was just talking to Gen Bajwa (Chief of Pakistani Army) and he told me not to refer to Fazl as 'diesel'. But I am not the one who is saying that. The people have named him diesel," Khan reportedly said referring toJUI-F leader Maulana Fazlur Rehman.

Pakistan and Australia were involved in a riveting second and penultimate Test, which was held at the National Stadium, Karachi. Resuming Day Five, on Wednesday (March 16), at 192-2 -- in pursuit of a mammoth 506-run target set by Pat Cummins & Co. -- Babar Azam-led Pakistan managed to reach 443-7 when both sides settled for a draw.

Thus, Babar-led home side batted for two days to weather the storm after conceding a whopping 408-run lead to Cummins' Australia in the second and penultimate Test. Following the hard-earned draw, Pakistan have been lauded by many former and active cricketers worldwide due to the grit, character and determination shown by them on the 22-yard cricket strip to escape from the jaws of a defeat. At one point, it looked like they were going for the chase following Babar's 196, Abdullah Shafique's 96 and Mohammad Rizwan's blitz (who remained unbeaten on 104).

Pakistani Prime Minister Imran Khan may lose the no-confidence motion in Parliament as three of his cabinet ministers are about to tender their resignation, a top leader from the party supporting the government said.

In an interview with Hum News on Tuesday, Chaudhry Parvez Elahi, whose Pakistan Muslim league-Quaid party is a key government partner with five members in the lower house National Assembly, asserted that the opposition had the support of “more than required” in order to pass the no-confidence plea.

"He is 100 per cent in trouble,” Elahi said, adding there are “plenty of surprises in store”.

"It's up to Imran Khan now to personally reach out to his allied parties and convince them to stay in the coalition government," Elahi said.

Elahi claimed that he had been offered Punjab’s chief minister position from the opposition alliance, adding that Khan’s Pakistan Tehreek-i-Insaf (PTI) party had yet to make that offer.

However, hours after his explosive interview, Elahi struck a conciliatory note saying that his party had neither left the government nor decided to support the no-trust move against PM Imran Khan.

Pakistan PM Imran Khan to face a no-confidence vote

Amid the looming no-confidence motion, cracks have begun surfacing in Pakistan's ruling coalition led by Imran Khan's Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) with ministers alleging attempts of blackmail by coalition partners, media reports said on Sunday.

Interior Minister Sheikh Rashid Ahmed on Saturday alleged that the Pakistan Muslim League-Q (PML-Q) was "blackmailing" the government in return for support during the Opposition`s no-trust move, The Dawn reported.

"I stand like a rock with Imran Khan," said the interior minister in a press briefing. "I am not responsible for anyone else. The use of force by deploying a heavy contingent of police commandos and the anti-terrorist force to expel volunteers of Ansarul Islam from Parliament Lodges shows how the Imran Khan government has now resorted to violence to suppress opponents, reported local media.

Notably, Islamabad Police on Thursday night stormed Parliament Lodges and made 19 arrests including key Opposition members of the National Assembly after members of Ansarul Islam, a uniformed volunteer force set up to protect the leadership of the Jamiat Ulema-i-Islam (JUI-F), entered the Parliament Lodges in large numbers, reported the Dawn newspaper.

The police commandos broke into the suite of JUI leader Salahuddin Ayubi and arrested activists of Ansarul Islam, dragged them out of the room, shifted them to the police prisoner vans and took them to an unknown place.

With Prime Minister Imran Khan issuing warnings of dire consequences for leadership of Opposition parties after the introduction of a no-confidence motion against him, it is not surprising that the JUI-F brought volunteers to their Parliamentary residences, said the media reports, adding that resorting to violence by turning the official residences into a battlefield for hours shows the ire of the government over the no-trust motion moved against it.

The situation could have easily been diffused by involving the National Assembly Speaker, who is supposed to ensure that no one is forcibly stopped from casting their votes. However, the government does not seem to want to settle down things, according to the media outlet.

The tensions are further aggravated by warnings from Interior Minister Sheikh Rashid that the government would not let anyone take the law into their own hands.

Also, the ruling party planning a public meeting near National Assembly a day before the no-confidence vote shows that Imran Khan has decided to first fight the no-trust motion outside the House as his grip on his legislators has loosened.

Any further violence by the government, in case the situation is not in its favour, will solidify the popular belief that politicians cannot think beyond power and self-interest in Pakistan, added the media reports.

Pakistan's election commission summons PM Imran Khan for violating poll code

Ongoing talks between Pakistan and the International Monitory Fund (IMF) have so far remained inconclusive due to "deviations" from agreed terms, media reports said on Saturday.

This uncertainty remains as Pakistan's precarious financial condition under the Imran Khan government continues. The two sides have failed to reach a consensus amid the country's budget deficit and current account deficit.

Last month, Pakistan's former finance minister and well-known economist Dr Hafeez A Pasha disclosed that the current account deficit was heading towards a historic record by touching the USD 20 billion mark or 6 per cent of Gross Domestic Product (GDP) for the current fiscal year.

Pasha said the international prices of various commodities were witnessing skyrocketing trends and now the Current Account Deficit (CAD) would witness more pressure with the possibility of touching a historic high. "For God's sake, the political parties must shun their differences because the country is heading towards a serious financial crisis," he had appealed.

Amidst such downward trends, Imran Khan is announcing one economic package after another. On March 2, he launched an interest-free loan programme worth Pakistani Rupee (PKR ) 407 billion under the "Kamyab Pakistan Programme", which he claimed would contribute to making the country's low-income groups self-reliant.

The News International reported that the IMF has raised serious objections over Imran Khan's Relief Package for slashing down petrol, diesel, and electricity prices as well as granting tax amnesty for the industrial sector.

According to the newspaper, the IMF had imposed the condition that Pakistan will not grant any tax amnesty and it is part of a continuous structural benchmark. Despite these conditions, the Imran Khan government breached this continuous structural benchmark which now requires a waiver from the IMF's Executive Board for completion of the 7th review, the report added.

Former Pakistan pacer Aaqib Javed has heaped praise on Shaheen Afridi and said the left-arm fast bowler reminds him of former captain Imran Khan. Afridi recently led his side Lahore Qalandars to a memorable triumph in the Pakistan Super League (PSL) 2022. Lahore defeated Multan Sultans in the final to lift their maiden PSL trophy.

Afridi earned applause from all corners for his remarkable leadership qualities as he led the side by example. The fast bowler delivered consistent performances with the ball and led the side extremely well to help them lift the PSL trophy. Javed, who is the head coach of Lahore Qalandars in the PSL, made a bold claim backing Afridi to become Pakistan's future captain.

Afridi, who is one of the best young pacers in the world at present, has already played 22 Tests and 28 ODIs for Pakistan and has become an integral member of the squad across all formats. He has also shown his leadership skills in the PSL and is touted to have a promising future ahead.

Javed, who has observed Afridi's growth from close quarters being his head coach at Lahore Qalandars, said the left-arm pacer has natural leadership qualities and reminds him of Imran Khan. He expects Afridi to take over Pakistan's captaincy responsibilities from current skipper Babaz Azam in the future.

“Shaheen has natural leadership talent and this is something we figured out two years ago. This is why we promoted him as vice-captain. I personally don’t think that age has any factor when it comes to leadership. For a captain, it is important to be committed and honest; these two things are present in Shaheen in abundance,” Javed told Cricket Pakistan.

“When we went to meet Imran Khan, I told him that Shaheen reminded me of his traits and I said that he will make us all proud. I am waiting for that time and the time will come soon,” he added.

Khan, who is also the current Prime Minister of Pakistan, is the only cricket captain to have led the team to a World Cup win. Imran-led Pakistan lifted the World Cup in 1992. Pakistan have since failed to lift the World Cup title again as they continue to wait for their second triumph.

‘He reminds me of Imran Khan’ – Aaqib Javed names Pakistan star who can replace Babar Azam as captain

19 political leaders including opposition JUI-F members arrested in Pakistan, in the latest crackdown by Pakistan's Imran Khan government.

Pakistan: 19 including opposition JUI-F members arrested, Imran Khan's ploy to target opposition?

Pakistan Prime Minister Imran Khan lashed out at opposition parties for bringing a no-confidence against him.

While addressing a public gathering in northwestern Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Khan dubbed the opposition members— PML-N President Shehbaz Sharif, PPP co-chair Asif Ali Zardari and Jamiat Ulema-i-Islam – Fazl (JUI-F) chief Maulana Fazlur Rehman—as “three stooges”.

What was striking in Imran Khan’s speech was that during his rally, he seemed to disclose his conversation with army chief General Bajwa on Rahman, who is known as “Maulana Diesel”— a derogatory term for his alleged participation in graft involving fuel licenses.

“I was just talking to Gen Bajwa, and he told me not to refer to Fazl as diesel. But I am not the one who is saying that. The people have named him diesel," the prime minister said.

The tone and language of the prime minister seem to have nosedived in recent days after the opposition parties moved a no-trust vote against him.

On Wednesday, Khan said that after winning the trust vote in Parliament, he would target former president and Opposition leader Asif Ali Zardari for alleged corruption.

Khan, addressing the Pakistan Tehreek-i-Insaf (PTI) workers at the Governor House in Karachi, claimed that the motion is the “political death” of the opposition, Geo News reported.

The no-confidence motion, signed by about 100 lawmakers from the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) and Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP), was submitted with the National Assembly Secretariat on Tuesday.

Khan, 69, is heading a coalition government and he can be removed if some of the partners decide to switch sides.

Slip of tongue: Pak PM discloses his conversations with Gen Bajwa while slamming opposition

Pakistan: 19 including opposition JUI-F members arrested

There have been daily attacks against the properties of minorities and their religious sites in Pakistan due to blasphemy charges that are fake or erroneous.

In a recent study on the blasphemy issue in Pakistan, a local think tank, the Centre for Research and Security Studies, disclosed that 89 people were extra-judicially killed over blasphemy allegations in the country between 1947 and 2021.

The report also found that 1,287 citizens were accused of blasphemy between 2011 and 2021, which is when TLP was most active and expanded its support base across the country.

Pakistan has the second-strictest blasphemy laws in the world after Iran, according to the US Commission on International Religious Freedom Report (2016). But the most worrying fact is that, in most blasphemy cases, the perpetrator is either eulogised as the "saviour" of Islam, in case they receive a judicial sentence, or released under the pressure of religious extremists.

Mob justice is not a new phenomenon in Pakistan.

Some of the cases that gained prominence include that of a mentally challenged man being stoned to death by an angry mob on February 12 for allegedly desecrating the Holy Quran.

A mob vandalised and set ablaze a police station in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa's Charsadda district in November 2021 after the local authorities refused to hand over a man arrested for allegedly desecrating the Holy Quran.

The lynching of Priyantha Kumara, a Sri Lankan factory manager, in Punjab's Sialkot city in December is still fresh in the memory.

In Pakistan, extrajudicial vigilantism isn't the only reason for killings over blasphemy accusations. The reasons for their actions range from religious to political to personal and petty disputes, as well as international connections.

Extremists support the most severe implementation of draconian blasphemy laws in order to subjugate lower-class citizens, Ahmadiyyas and Shias, as well as Christians, Hindus, and Sikhs.

These laws are a legacy of the Islamic military dictator General Ziaul Haq, who used them to appease hard-line Islamist forces in Pakistan.

Under Imran Khan, however, the menace of blasphemy killings has reached a new height with the government giving space to Islamist groups such as Tehreek-e-Labbaik Pakistan (TLP), a Sunni Barelvi outfit.

As a result of the Taliban's victory in Afghanistan, hard-line Islamist forces in Pakistan have gained strength. All of these factors point to more blasphemy killings in the future.
