Pak Political Crisis: Prime Ministerial term comes to an unceremonious end

After yesterday's midnight chaos, Imran Khan becomes 1st PM to lose the trust vote & the national assembly session now will reconvene on Monday. In a recent update on Pak political crisis, the session has been shifted from 11 am to 2 pm which will be seeing the election of the new PM of the country

Pakistan political turmoil: New Prime Minister to be elected on Monday

Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) chairman Ramiz Raja is considering resigning from his position in the wake of the ouster of Imran Khan as prime minister of the country, according to sources.

Ramiz, who like Imran is also a former Pakistan captain, is presently in Dubai for the International Cricket Council (ICC) meetings which concluded on Sunday.

"Ramiz had only agreed to become the chairman of the Board on the insistence of Imran for whom all the players who played under his captaincy including Ramiz have a lot of regard and respect," a source well aware of the developments said on Sunday.

"Ramiz was well set in a career as commentator, TV personality and expert and was busy with assignments. But on Imran's insistence he agreed to put aside all his media contacts and become chairman of the board," the source said.

"Ramiz had also made it clear to the PM that he would only remain in the Board until he (Imran Khan) was PM."

The source said that with Imran now ousted as PM, who is also Patron-in-Chief of the Board and directly nominates the chairman for a formal election process, it is highly unlikely Ramiz would stay on unless the new Premier wants him to carry on with his job.

Since Ramiz took over as PCB chairman last September he has made a lot of changes in the Board and also followed up on Imran's insistence on a domestic cricket structure based on just six first class provincial teams.

Soon after taking charge, he made it clear to Misbah-ul-Haq and Waqar Younis that they were no longer required as head coach and bowling coach of the national team and should resign.

He also asked the head of the high-performance centre in Lahore, Grant Bradburn, and some other coaches to resign.

His biggest move was to create circumstances where Wasim Khan stepped down as CEO of the Board.

Since then, Ramiz has brought in a new CEO but with Imran's government now gone, it remains to be seen what will happen to the new appointments in the Board as it is no secret that political changes also have a big bearing on Pakistan cricket set-up.

"If Shahbaz Sharif becomes new Premier, then there is every likelihood he might convey to Ramiz his services are no longer required and bring back Najam Sethi to head the Board," the source said.

But, with no international or domestic commitments for the national team until June, changes in the Board will not affect cricket affairs.

Sethi resigned soon after Imran won the last general elections as he never got along with the former captain on political issues.

After several delays, the voting on the no-confidence motion concluded in Pakistan. Imran Khan being voted out in the national assembly is bound to have ramifications worldwide especially in South Asia. New PM of the country will have to deal with a bruised foreign policy

Pak Political Chaos: New Prime Minster to deal with bruised foreign policy

For last some days, Pakistan has been witnessing an unprecedented constitutional crisis.

After former Prime Minister of Pakistan, Imran Khan, lost majority in the Parliament, every attempt seems to have been made to ensure voting on no-confidence motion was not held.

To save the top job, Khan played the ‘foreign conspiracy’ card, accused Opposition for several things and blamed the US for no-confidence motion. He also linked it to the Russia visit. To top it all, he brought a threat letter to the fore, saying it had cipher. He also said it cannot be revealed to the public as it contains secret information about the country.

The PM also got the Assembly dissolved through President Arif Alvi. He ensured that the Speaker or Deputy Speaker do not hold the vote on the motion.

Not just this, he didn’t resign but created circumstances for the Speaker and Deputy Speaker of the National Assembly to leave theirs.

Following the Supreme Court's decision, he will face a no-confidence vote on April 9 (10:30 AM).

Since Pakistan's independence in 1947, no prime minister has served a full term in office, a situation that has been exacerbated by the military's control of the key levers of power, dominance of foreign policy, and dictation of security objectives.

So tomorrow's no-confidence vote will determine whether he stays in power and makes history, or if he succumbs to Pakistan's apparent precedent.

So, let's take a look at his time as Prime Minister of Pakistan's Islamic Republic.

2018:

Imran Khan was elected Prime Minister of Pakistan with 176 votes on August 17, 2018, and took the oath of office on August 18, 2018.

In Pakistan, the opposition has hailed the apex court's judgment. Pakistan prime minister Imran Khan will face a no-confidence vote on Saturday. For more on this, WION is joined by Gul Bukhari, a columnist.

Pakistan political turmoil: In conversation with Columnist Gul Bukhari

Pakistan’s Prime Minister Imran Khan, while addressing the nation on Friday, called the no-confidence motion against his government a “foreign conspiracy”.

The PM said the Supreme Court should have initiated an investigation over the “foreign conspiracy” matter.

While taking about the foreign conspiracy theory, he said that in the meeting between Pakistani ambassador and the US official, the latter said that “I [Imran Khan] should not have visited [Russia].”

During the address, the PM said even before the no-confidence motion was filed, the US official had warned the Pakistani ambassador that if he manages to save himself from the motion, Pakistan will have to face “severe consequences.”

The leader maintained that the US official already knew that a no-confidence motion would be submitted against him, adding that they also knew who would come to power, if the Opposition ousted him.

He slammed the US official for arrogance and said that the official told the ambassador that if he is ousted, Pakistan will be spared no matter, who becomes PM.

Allegations were also levelled against PML-N President Shahbaz Sharif by the PM. Khan said he had prepared his sherwani for the oath-taking ceremony as he is involved in this “foreign conspiracy.”

“It is so shameful for the 220 million people of Pakistan that a foreign official is ordering the sitting prime minister of the country through a third person, warning of severe consequences and alluring them of forgiveness if I [Imran Khan] leave the office,” PM said.
