"When it comes to communicating what scientists expect to happen in the Arctic, it is important to predict when we might observe the first ice-free conditions in the Arctic, which will show up in the daily satellite data," Jahn said. According to Jahn, the main contributor to sea ice depletion is greenhouse emissions. When the ice cover decreases, the amount of heat from sunlight absorbed by the sea increases, worsening the ice melt and warming the Arctic. However, future emission levels will decide how often the ice-free condition occurs, she added. However, the bright side is that the Arctic Ocean is resilient and can recover swiftly when the atmosphere cools down. "Unlike the ice sheet in Greenland that took thousands of years to build, even if we melt all the Arctic sea ice, if we can then figure out how to take CO2 back out of the atmosphere in the future to reverse warming, sea ice will come back within a decade," Jahn said. The first four fishermen were successfully rescued around 6:40 pm CT, and by 7:37 pm, all 122 individuals had been safely brought back to the mainland, as reported in a Facebook post by the sheriff’s office.

Chris Mueller, the public information officer for the sheriff’s office, commended the response, stating, “Our first responders have had a lot of practice this year, and it is quite impressive we evacuated 122 people in less than 3 hours from the first call in a rural area of the county.”

The incident has brought the spotlight on the precarious ice conditions in the region, with the Beltrami County Sheriff’s Office and the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources cautioning the public.

Recent research, published in the journal Science, unveiled a surprising connection between the movements of Turquet’s octopuses and the stability of the West Antarctic ice sheet. These cephalopods, inhabitants of the Southern Ocean, navigated the region when the ice sheet melted approximately 125,000 years ago.

The study suggested that this historical event, coinciding with the last period of temperatures comparable to today's, might warn us of a potential collapse of the West Antarctic ice sheet.&nbsp;

Tim Naish, a co-author of the study reportedly stated, "The findings are concerning as they provide very strong evidence that [the] West Antarctic Ice Sheet becomes unstable and collapses when global temperatures warm by more than 1.5°C above preindustrial and if that warming is sustained."

The research explored the genetic data of Turquet’s octopuses, revealing surprising similarities among specimens from distant seas—Weddell, Amundsen, and Ross.

These areas are now separated by the West Antarctic Ice Sheet.

Sally Lau, the lead author, reportedly explained that the octopuses found migration "pathways" through the sea after the ice sheet melted, enabling interbreeding and gene flow between populations.

The study focused on a critical period, the Last Interglacial, occurring around 129,000 to 116,000 years ago, characterised by global temperatures 0.5 to 1.5 degrees celsius warmer than preindustrial levels. During this time, global sea levels rose 5 to 10 metres higher than today, with Antarctic meltwater contributing significantly.

Surprisingly, they couldn't see much damage at first. But when they&nbsp;went inside, they realised the situation was more serious than they thought.

The ice had made a big hole in their roof. From the outside, it looked like the impact was about 18 inches to two feet wide. But inside their home, the damage was even worse. It was a puzzling and alarming situation.

Jeff and his wife gathered about 10 pounds of the ice in bags, but there was still a lot more of it around. They were determined to figure out what had happened and why this huge chunk of ice had fallen on their house.

The "overturning circulation" of waters in the deepest reaches of the oceans would slow by 40 per cent by 2050 in a high-emissions scenario, according to the study, which warned of impacts that would last "for centuries to come".&nbsp;

Matthew England, climate professor at University of New South Wales (UNSW), says that if the model holds true, the deep ocean current will be "on a trajectory that looks headed towards collapse"

Trillions of tonnes of cold, highly salty and oxygen-rich water sinks around Antarctica each year, sending a deep-water current northwards to the Indian, Pacific and Atlantic oceans, scientists say.&nbsp;

The greater volumes of melting ice make the Antarctic waters less dense and salty, however, slowing the deep-water circulation with consequences for climate, sea level and marine ecosystems.&nbsp;

"If the oceans had lungs, this would be one of them," England said.&nbsp;

He added that if oceans become stagnant below 4000 metres, "this would trap nutrients in the deep ocean, reducing the nutrients available to support marine life near the ocean surface."

UNSW emeritus professor John Church, who was not involved in the study, said there were many uncertainties about the impact of a declining deep ocean circulation.&nbsp;

"But it seems almost certain that continuing on a high greenhouse gas emission pathway will lead to even more profound effects on the ocean and the climate system," Church said.&nbsp;

"The world urgently needs to drastically reduce our emissions to get off the high-emission pathway we are currently following."&nbsp;

The study team included lead author Qian Li of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and co-authors from the Australian National University and Australia's national research organisation CSIRO.&nbsp;

"It’s “not just ‘barely a record low,’” said Ted Scambos, a glaciologist at the University of Colorado Boulder, he was quoted by CNN.

Ice mass in the Arctic around North Pole has shown a consistent downward trend over years but that in Antarctic has swung between highs and lows. In 2014, the ice mass reached a record high of 7.76 million square miles. This made scientists think that Antarctica is relatively insulated from the effects of Climate Change.

But 2016 onwards, scientists and researchers began witnessing a downward trend and after two years of record lows, it has got them worried.&nbsp;

“The question is, has climate change reached Antarctica? Is this the beginning of the end? Will the sea ice disappear for good in the coming years in the summer?” Christian Haas, head of the Sea Ice Physics Research Section at the Alfred Wegener Institute in Germany. Haas was quoted by the CNN.

But as both glaciers have retreated, the bare rock of the ridge between the two is beginning to emerge — and will be completely ice-free before the summer is out.

"The pass will be entirely in the open air in a few weeks," the Glacier 3000 ski resort said in a statement.

While the ice measured around 15 metres (49.5 feet) thick in 2012, the ground underneath "will have completely resurfaced by the end of September".

The ridge is at an altitude of 2,800 metres in the Glacier 3000 ski domain and effectively marks the border between the Vaud and Wallis cantons in western Switzerland.

Skiers could glide over the top from one glacier to the other. But now a strip of rock between them has emerged, with just the last remaining bit of ice left.

Glaciologist Mauro Fischer, a researcher at Bern University, said the loss of thickness of the glaciers in the region will be on average three times higher this year compared to the last 10 summers.

The scientists were able to analyse the appropriate age of the ice while drilling through ice core measuring 9.5 m (31 ft) long during the Southern Hemisphere summer of 2017 and 2018, according to Nature.com.

They have recorded the age of material at different depths. According to them, the upper section is estimated to be around 3 million years old, while the lower section was dated to between 4.3 and 5.1 million years, which is almost twice as old as the previous record-holder, at 2.7 million years.

The ice sheets from Greenland and Antarctica are key to understanding modern climate science. Traditionally, scientists drill in places where ice layers accumulate year after year, undisturbed by glacial flows.

The discovery was made by the Beyond European Project for Ice Coring in Antarctica (EPICA). It was funded by the European Commission and being carried out by the Institute of Polar Sciences of the Cnr (National Research Council of Italy) and The British Antarctic Survey (BAS).

The ice had broken off from the shoreline off Point Comfort. &nbsp;&nbsp;

All the people were rescued with no injuries in less than two hours, the release said. &nbsp;

"It is believed a barge that had gone through the Bay shortly before the ice breakage may have contributed to the destabilisation of the ice," the sheriff's office said. &nbsp;

Although the floating ice chunk was just a mile away from shore till the rescue’s end, it had floated around three quarters of a mile during the evacuation effort, the office of the sheriff said. &nbsp;

"Although the chunk of ice remained fairly stable, its condition was deteriorating rapidly (and) cracking up as it moved with the open water pounding at the edge of it," the office added. &nbsp;
