China signalled today it was hardening its stance on dissent in Taiwan and Hong Kong, where it faces growing frustration with the increasingly authoritarian government of President Xi Jinping.

In a report to the opening session of the annual National People's Congress in Beijing, Premier Li Keqiang warned China "will never tolerate any separatist schemes" in Taiwan, amid growing tensions between the mainland and the self-ruled island.

The warning to the almost 3,000 members of the mostly ceremonial legislature followed the omission of language supporting the political autonomy of Hong Kong and Macau that had featured prominently in previous years.

The report said Beijing would continue to uphold its "one China" principle and promote "peaceful growth" relations with Taiwan under the 1992 consensus, which agrees that there is only one China without specifying whether Beijing or Taipei is its rightful representative.

Beijing will also "advance China's peaceful reunification", Li said.

But, he added, it "will never tolerate any separatist schemes or activities for 'Taiwan independence'."

China still sees Taiwan as part of its territory awaiting reunification and has cut off official communications with Taipei because President Tsai Ing-wen refuses to acknowledge the democratic island as part of "one China".

China voiced anger last week after the US Senate passed a Taiwan travel bill to encourage visits between Washington and Taipei "at all levels".

Washington cut formal diplomatic ties with Taiwan in 1979 in favour of Beijing. But it maintains trade relations with the island and sells it weapons, angering China.

The report also hinted at a hardening stance towards dissent in the semi-autonomous cities of Hong Kong and Macau, which Beijing rules under the principle of "One country, two systems".

Last year the section of the report on governing the former European colonies said they would be allowed "a high degree of autonomy", a statement in keeping with past years, but this year's report omitted the phrase.

While this year's report referred to the "One country, two systems" concept, it no longer said it would "steadfastly" apply the principle.

The change may seem minor but silence speaks volumes in a system where government documents are edited down to the last comma.

Hong Kong has been governed under a "one country, two systems" deal since 1997, when Britain handed the territory back to China.

This allows residents rights unseen on the mainland, including freedom of speech and a partially directly elected legislature, as well as an independent judiciary.

But there are fears these freedoms are under threat from Beijing.

Tanya Chan, a pro-democracy lawmaker in the city, said the omission of the mention of Hong Kong people governing themselves was no mistake.

"I don't think any omission is without purpose, especially when Hong Kong people are concerned about autonomy and the whole system," she said.

"I worry about whether the Chinese government still respects these very important promises," Chan added, predicting more "serious and overt" intervention by Beijing.

Claudia Mo, also a pro-democracy legislator, said the "one country, two systems" deal was already dead. "They are just confirming it," she added.

China signals hardened stance on Hong Kong, Taiwan

The US State Department said on Saturday that it was deeply concerned that a Swedish citizen and Hong Kong-based bookseller, Gui Minhai, had been detained in China and called for him to be allowed to leave the country.

The Swedish government has said that Gui, who has published books on the personal lives of President Xi Jinping and other Communist Party leaders, was taken into custody last week while traveling with Swedish diplomats to seek medical treatment in Beijing.

The European Union’s ambassador to China has called on the Chinese authorities to release Gui immediately, echoing demands from Stockholm.

“We are deeply concerned that Swedish citizen Gui Minhai was detained,” State Department Spokeswoman Heather Nauert said in a statement.

“We call on Chinese authorities to explain the reasons and legal basis for Mr. Gui’s arrest and detention, disclose his whereabouts, and allow him freedom of movement and the freedom to leave China,” she said.

The United States and European allies would continue to promote “greater respect for human rights in China,” she said.

Asked this week about the Swedish and EU demands for Gui’s release, a Chinese foreign ministry spokeswoman described the appeals as “baseless.”

Gui had been abducted in Thailand while on holiday in 2015, one of five Hong Kong booksellers who went missing that year and later appeared in custody on mainland China. The four others have returned to Hong Kong.

Hong Kong, a former British colony, returned to Chinese rule in 1997 with a guarantee of wide-ranging freedoms, including freedom of speech, but critics accuse Communist Party rulers in Beijing of creeping interference in the city’s affairs.

Chinese authorities said Gui was freed in October after serving a two-year sentence for a traffic-related crime in 2003.

Gui’s daughter Angela told Radio Sweden he was taken off a train by plainclothes police while en route to the capital to get medical attention for a neurological ailment.

Sweden’s Foreign Ministry has twice summoned China’s ambassador to Stockholm to explain the situation.

Hong Kong voted to ban ivory sales in a landmark move Wednesday to end the infamous trade in the city.

Lawmakers overwhelmingly voted for the bill that will abolish the trade by 2021, following on the heels of China's complete ban on ivory sales that went into effect at the end of last year.

"Shutting down this massive ivory market has thrown a lifeline to elephants," said Bert Wander of global advocacy group Avaaz in a statement.

"Today is a great day for elephants. Hong Kong has always been the 'heart of darkness' of the ivory trade with a 670-tonne stockpile when international trade was banned in 1989," said Alex Hoffard of WildAid Hong Kong.

The amendment to the Protection of Endangered Species of Animals and Plants ordinance will phase out the trade in three stages, a time period some conservationists say could be exploited as a loophole and too late for African elephants which continue to be killed in huge numbers.

The steps include a ban on trade in hunting trophies and ivory dating from after 1975, when a global treaty regulating the trade took effect. It would later extend to ivory acquired before 1975, and finally traders would have to dispose of their stock by 2021.

Penalties for offenders will be increased to a maximum fine of HK$10 million ($1.3 million) and 10 years' imprisonment.

Dozens of demonstrators including schoolchildren gathered outside the city's legislature to protest against ivory sales holding up signs that read, "Do you really need ivory chopsticks?"

Angry ivory traders have said they will be forced to close down their businesses and demanded the government compensate them for their stock -- which the new ordinance rejected.

Despite the planned ban, the trade was still flourishing in Hong Kong, which saw its biggest ivory bust in three decades last July, when more than seven tonnes of tusks worth over $9 million were seized.

In the months ahead of Wednesday's vote, the legislature heard tales of murder and suffering involving African park rangers who were shot dead while protecting elephants and others drowned or set on fire.

African ivory is highly sought after in China, where it is seen as a status symbol, and used to fetch as much as $1,100 a kilogram.

Poaching in Africa has seen the elephant population fall by 110,000 over the last 10 years to just 415,000, according to the International Union for Conservation of Nature.

Despite an overall fall in poaching, Africa's elephant population has declined in part because of continued illegal killing, said a report last year by the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species.

More than 340,000 domestic helpers, mostly from the Philippines and Indonesia, work in Hong Kong, often performing menial tasks for low wages while being forced to live in poor conditions.

Calling the abuse inflicted on Sulistyaningsih "inhumane, degrading and abhorrent", Judge Winnie Tsui ordered Law to pay around $103,400 (HK$809,000) as she delivered her judgment, reports said.

The court awarded Sulistyaningsih the full amount of damages she claimed for injuries, medical expenses and other losses, local media reported.

Sulistyaningsih previously described how for months she lived on nothing but bread and rice, slept only four hours a day and was beaten so badly that she was knocked unconscious.

The then-23-year-old was admitted to hospital in Indonesia in 2014, emaciated and in critical condition, sparking international outrage as pictures of her spread on social media.

Following a series of high-profile abuse cases, concerns over the welfare of Hong Kong's migrant domestic workers have grown.

Rights groups say unscrupulous employment agencies plunge helpers into debt and withhold their passports while the legal requirement for helpers to live with their employers makes it difficult for them to escape abuse.

Rights advocates have long sought reforms, including ending a rule where domestic workers must leave the city 14 days after they quit a job unless they can find other employment within that time.

Campaigners say the rule discourages workers from leaving abusive employers.

The government has shown no sign it plans to update the regulations.

Law Wan-tung is serving a six-year jail term for starving and beating her Indonesian domestic helper

A Hong Kong woman jailed for six years for starving and beating her Indonesian domestic helper was ordered by a court on Thursday to pay more than $100,000 in damages for the "inhumane" abuse. Law Wan-tung was convicted of grievous bodily harm, assault, criminal intimidation and failure to pay wages in 2015 and is still serving a jail term after losing an appeal. The plight of her former helper, Erwiana Sulistyaningsih, and pictures of the injuries she suffered made her the face of a movement determined to force change for Hong Kong's army of helpers. Hong Kong woman ordered to pay abused maid $100,000

Around 1,000 people marched through Hong Kong Sunday, led by some of the city's high-profile democracy campaigners including Joshua Wong, in what they billed an "anti-authoritarian" protest.

Activists say Hong Kong is at risk of losing its rights and liberties in the face of growing Chinese pressure on the semi-autonomous city.

The jailing of campaigners following court hearings, and fears that Hong Kong will introduce an anti-subversion law, are among the key concerns in the pro-democracy camp.

Wong, 21, was jailed in August over his role in the Umbrella Movement mass pro-democracy protests of 2014 and is on bail pending an appeal.

He will be sentenced on another protest-related charge Thursday, which could mean more jail time.

"No one likes to serve a prison sentence, (but) if it can mobilise more people to care about justice and democracy in Hong Kong, I think it's valuable and I will pay this price," Wong told AFP.

Protesters carried placards reading: "The Hong Kong spirit can never be imprisoned" and "Walk with the resisters, fight authoritarian rule".

Some held up caricatures of city leaders.

Others played a recording of China's national anthem and paraded a doll bearing the sign: "When you hear the national anthem, don't eat. Stand up immediately." A new law introduced by Beijing against disrespecting the anthem will also be applied to Hong Kong.

The city was handed back to China by Britain in 1997 and is governed by a "one country, two systems" deal which grants it freedoms unseen on the mainland.

But with the emergence of a fledgling pro-independence movement, Beijing is pushing a tougher line on Hong Kong.

There are also concerns about a new express railway to the mainland, which will mean that parts of the train terminus come under Chinese jurisdiction.

Student Kelvin Muk, 20, said he had joined the march because he feared he may eventually lose the right to do so.

"We are increasingly coming out to protest because we want to at least hold on to the last remaining freedoms we have," he said.

A 140-year-old Patek Philippe pocket watch, once owned by Tata founder Jamsetji Nusserwanji Tata, will be auctioned in Hong Kong on Tuesday.

The watch was custom-ordered by Tata and will be sold for an estimated $10,000 to $20,000.

The 18 karat, pink gold timepiece was gifted by Tata to English architect James Morris in 1890 as a thank you for his work on the Tata family mansion, Esplanade House, in Mumbai.

Engraved on the back of the watch is a dedication to Morris: "This watch is presented by Jamsetjee N Tata to James Morris Esq, the architect, Esplanade House, Bombay, in recognition of his professional skill and of the care and attention devoted by him during its construction, 1890."

WION spoke with Thomas Perazzi, Head of Watches, Asia, at Phillips, the auction house selling the watch.

Perazzi says that back then it was actually yellow gold that was in vogue, but Jamsetji asked for pink gold -- making this a rare watch.

Perazzi was also part of the team that sold Mahatma Gandhi's Zenith pocket watch, John F Kennedy's Elgin, Jackie Kennedy's Cartier Tank, and Ethiopian Emperor Haile Selassie's Patek Philippe.

Perazzi says Jamsetji's Patek Philippe is a "repeating chronograph hunter case presentation watch", and that very few watchmakers had the skill to make that sort of watch back then.

And that five-minute repeaters, one of the most complex repeater mechanisms, are sought after by fine watch collectors as masterpieces of precision mechanical engineering.

Adding to the watch's value of course is the fact that it was owned by Jamsetji Tata and custom-ordered by him.

Perazzi says that unfortunately we do not have records of Patek Philippe retail prices at the time, but that a five-minute Patek Philippe repeater currently goes for over $300,000.

Nor was Phillips able to trace the full story of the watch and what happened to it after Morris -- a watch's value is calculated by brand, the complexity of its movement mechanism, and provenance -- but, says Perazzi, what we do know is that it was kept safely in a wise collector's safe all these years.

Chinese social media and video game giant Tencent became more valuable than Facebook on Tuesday as investors sent the company soaring into the top five of the world's biggest firms.

Tencent's Hong Kong-listed shares have doubled in value this year, and on Monday it became the first Asian company with a market capitalisation of half a trillion dollars.

By the end of the trading day on Tuesday, Tencent's outstanding shares were worth a combined 4.08 trillion Hong Kong dollars ($523 billion), surpassing Facebook's $519 billion.

Despite its stratospheric climb, Tencent is still some way behind the world's most valuable company, Apple, which is currently valued at $873 billion.

Last week, Tencent said profit had grown nearly 70 percent in the third quarter, when compared with the same period last year, well outpacing expectations. Its accelerating growth has sent its shares shooting higher in recent days.

Critics say many of China's tech companies copy the latest idea seen in the US. That has not been the case for Tencent, which has transformed its WeChat smartphone app into a product wholly unlike other social networking applications seen around the world.

"Tencent is an enterprise that focuses on innovation," said Huang Hao, an associate researcher at the National Academy of Economic Strategy of Chinese Academy of Social Sciences. "Its product ideas are not simple emulations of those of foreign businesses."

But it also has a distinct advantage over some of its western peers: Facebook and Twitter are blocked in China, cutting off a market of up to 1.3 billion people.

Cashless society

The nearly one billion users who flock to Tencent's WeChat app, and older platform QQ, can chat, post photos, play games, transfer money and pay for a variety of services in China. They exchange 38 billion messages each day.

WeChat has revolutionised China's tech industry and even daily life for millions of Chinese.

WeChat's QR codes, which look a lot like a bar code, are ubiquitous in China's shops and restaurants, and even fruit hawkers and some beggars carry around the scannable codes, allowing them to accept mobile payment.

The Wepay service, along with its competitor made by Alibaba, has helped China jump from a cash-based society to one at the global forefront of mobile payments.

Even the media and publishing sectors have seen changes to how Chinese consume and pay for content, with millions of WeChat accounts publishing content directly to their followers.

That has rubbed up against Chinese censors, who shut down dozens of accounts publishing the latest tidbits of celebrity gossip over the summer.

Another key to Tencent's success has been its top game, the multi-player online battle "Honour of Kings", which has been a smash hit that helped Tencent's revenue from smartphone games surge by 84 percent in the third quarter.

Tencent's disruption of industries traditionally dominated by the state has also angered a number of behemoths - from the publishing to telecommunications to banking sectors.

These powerful enemies could pose a problem for the tech giant in the future, analysts say.

"Most of its profits are obtained by foreign investors," said Huang of the government research institute.

"The government should face up to this issue and consider the ways to promote the development of entirely national enterprises in the future," he said.

The Chinese legislature passed an amendment on Saturday which stated that anyone disrespecting Chinese national anthem will be taken to task. The StanpassedCommittee of the National People's Congress informed the country's criminal law that any 'serious' disregard would lead to upto three years in jail, after increased nationalist demands from the ruling Communist Party led by President Xi Jinping. Upto 3-year imprisonment for disrespecting anthem: China

China today adopted a new law stipulating a three-year punishment for disrespecting the national anthem, which would also be enforced in the specially administered provinces of Hong Kong and Macau.

China's national legislature, the National People's Congress (NPC) often referred to as a rubber stamp parliament for its routine endorsement of the ruling Communist Party's decisions voted and passed an amendment to the country's criminal law to punish acts of gravely disrespecting the national anthem.

It has also endorsed the adoption of the National Anthem Law to the Special Administrative Regions (SAR) of Hong Kong and Macau, state-run Xinhua news agency reported.

The extension of the law to Hong Kong is significant in view of the unrest among the local population over the growing control of China in the SAR which returned to Chinese rule in 1997.

The amendments were passed at the bimonthly session of the Standing Committee of the NPC.

According to the amendment, punishments previously stipulated for national flag and national emblem desecration in public now also apply to serious acts of public disrespect to the national anthem.

Punishments include deprivation of political rights, criminal detention, and imprisonment of up to three years.

The national anthem law, adopted in September, came into force last month to ensure appropriate use of the song.

Those who maliciously modify the lyrics, or play or sing the national anthem in a distorted or disrespectful way in public, can be detained for up to 15 days, and even be held criminally liable, according to the law.

China's national anthem "March of the Volunteers" has lyrics by poet Tian Han and music by Nie Er.

The song encouraged Chinese soldiers and civilians during the 1937-45 Sino-Japanese War.

A Christie's spokesman said it was one of the most important pink diamonds ever to be sold because of its colour and clarity.

"The rarity of pink diamond makes it so valuable," Fung Chiang of Christie's jewellery department told AFP.

Hong Kong will become the first Asian city to host the Gay Games in 2022 with rights campaigners celebrating the winning bid for a city often criticised for lagging on LGBT rights.

Organised by the LGBT community, the Gay Games features a range of sports and is open to all participants, "without regard to sexual orientation, and there are no qualifying standards", the Hong Kong bid team said in a statement.

Competitors come from many countries, including those where homosexuality remains illegal, it added.

The Gay Games was founded by former Olympic decathlete Tom Waddell and first held in San Francisco in 1982. The next edition will be held in Paris in August next year, featuring 36 sports, from mountain biking to fencing and athletics.

Hong Kong's Pink Alliance, which promotes equal rights for the LGBT community, said the games would "help to bring a wider understanding and acceptance of our community", not only in the southern Chinese city but throughout the region.

When the constitutional court in neighbouring Taiwan ruled in favour of allowing gay marriage in May, campaigners in socially conservative Hong Kong highlighted the city's lack of progress on equality issues.

Hong Kong does not recognise gay marriage and only decriminalised homosexuality in 1991.

But a landmark court decision in September that granted a British lesbian in Hong Kong known as "QT" the right to live and work in the city as a dependant of her long-term partner was hailed as a decision that could reduce more hurdles for same-sex couples.

QT had previously been denied a dependant visa by immigration authorities, forcing her instead to stay in Hong Kong on a visitor visa, which did not allow her to work.

Hong Kong's Gay Games bid chair Dennis Philipse said there was a "spirit and passion for increased inclusion and diversity" in Hong Kong.

However, the campaign for LGBT rights continues to elicit fury from anti-gay campaigners.

Last year, banking giant HSBC placed a pair of rainbow-painted lions in front of its landmark building in the heart of the city to promote support of gay rights, a move slammed as "disgusting" by opponents who rallied in protest.

Hong Kong will become the first Asian city to host the Gay Games in 2022 with rights campaigners celebrating the winning bid for a city often criticised for lagging on LGBT rights. Hong Kong beat Mexico's Guadalajara and Washington DC to host the 11th edition of the event.

Chinese logistics firm Best Inc, backed by Alibaba Group Holding Ltd, cut the size of a proposed US initial public offering (IPO) after receiving tepid investor response to its preliminary valuation, IFR reported on Tuesday citing people close to the deal.

The Hangzhou-based company now plans to raise up to $495 million with the sale of 45 million new American Depositary Shares (ADS) priced in an indicative range of $10 to $11 each, reported IFR, a Thomson Reuters publication.

The IPO previously consisted of 53.56 million new shares and 8.54 million existing shares offered for $13 to $15 each.

Best declined to comment on the new IPO terms.

The company is set to price the IPO on September 19, with its market debut set for the following day.

The initial terms valued Best at a 2019 forecast price-to-earnings (P/E) ratio of 17.7 to 20.4 times, higher than New York-listed Chinese peer ZTO Express Inc, which raised $1.4 billion in October and trades 13.7 times its 2019 earnings.

Best, led by Johnny Chou, a former Greater China president for Alphabet Inc's Google, was counting on optimism over China's booming logistics market and the firm's tech-focused approach to delivery services in seeking a high valuation for its shares.

But concerns over competition from rivals flush with cash after going public in recent months, as well as rising fuel and labour costs, plus a slump in ZTO's share price prompted some investors to balk at Best's initial pricing, one of the people said.

ZTO's stock has traded below its IPO price since debuting and is down 24 per cent from the listing price.

Two robots discussed serious issues relating to the future of humanity in a tech conference held in Hong Kong.

The human resembling robots, Han and Sofia, tackled serious concerns in an unserious and light way.

China on Monday opened up its $10 trillion bond market to foreign investors, in the latest liberalisation move by Beijing as it seeks to draw in more fund flows as it battles slowing economic growth.

The new conduit comes via Hong Kong, where "qualified investors" will be able to buy debt in China -- the world's third-largest bond market after the United States and Japan.

Qualified investors include central banks, sovereign wealth funds, and other major financial institutions, according to the People's Bank of China (PBoC) and the Hong Kong Monetary Authority, who jointly announced the platform on Sunday.

Their statement said the "bond connect" arrangement between the Hong Kong and mainland Chinese markets went into "experimental operation" from Monday.

The announcement came on a weekend in which Hong Kong and China marked the 20th anniversary of Britain's handover of the southern Chinese financial centre back to Beijing in 1997.

"The bond connect is an important move for the central government to support Hong Kong's development and promote cooperation between the mainland and Hong Kong," the PBoC said Monday.

It will "promote Hong Kong's long-term prosperity and stability and provide a more convenient investment channel for overseas investors. It will also steadily push forward the opening up of China's financial market".

The growing Chinese bond market has been virtually out of reach for foreign investors, who currently hold less than 1.5 per Fcent of bonds issued in China, according to estimates by Bloomberg.

The new platform mirrors previously established link-ups between the share markets of Hong Kong and mainland China that now allow foreign and Chinese investors to buy shares in the each other's markets.

Those links give foreigners some access to China-listed shares, while also allowing Chinese firms to buy Hong Kong-traded stocks.

The new bond connect scheme, however, currently only allows foreign investors to buy Chinese debt.

HSBC said it completed its first deal under the new arrangement as underwriter for a bond issue by Agricultural Development Bank of China.

"The enhanced ease of investment under Bond Connect will attract more overseas funds, creating a more diversified investor base and further enhancing the market's size and depth," Helen Wong, HSBC Greater China Chief Executive, said in a statement.

"This will help pave the way for China bonds to be included in major global bond indices in the future."

China has for years faced foreign complaints about restricted access to its markets, but has recently made a series of liberalisation pledges partly to expand its global market influence.

Last month, leading index compiler MSCI said it would include Chinese shares in its global emerging-market indices, citing loosening restrictions on foreign ownership of Chinese stocks.

Utilisation of the new bond connect platform, however, could hinge on fears of mounting Chinese debt levels which have prompted warnings of a looming crisis and possible defaults. China has moved aggressively in recent months to rein in runaway credit.

Britain returned Hong Kong to Chinese rule on July 1, 1997, under a "one country, two systems" formula which guarantees wide-ranging autonomy and judicial independence not seen in mainland China.

The central government in Beijing has promised Hong Kong's capitalist system will remain unchanged for "at least" 50 years, but it has not clarified what happens after that.

Fears of the creeping influence of Communist Party leaders in Beijing are highlighted by the abduction by mainland agents of some Hong Kong booksellers who specialised in politically sensitive material and Beijing's efforts in disqualifying two pro-independence lawmakers elected to the city legislature.

An annual protest to press for full democracy in the city is expected to take place after Xi's departure on the afternoon of July 1. The city is already on tenterhooks. On the eve of Xi's visit, police arrested pro-democracy protesters, some of whom scrambled up a monument symbolising the city's handover from British to Chinese rule.

Part of the major rift under Chinese rule in Hong Kong has been a tenacious push by activists to get China to live up to a constitutional promise under Hong Kong's mini-constitution, the Basic Law, to allow universal suffrage as an "ultimate aim".

"This promise has been shattered under the watchful eyes of the whole world," organisers of a planned July 1 rally wrote in a statement. "Hong Kong has been lied to for 20 years. Let's retake Hong Kong for a real and fully fledged democracy."

MASSIVE SECURITY FOR XI VISIT

A massive security presence is expected with thousands of police deployed to maintain order as protests simmer, including one on Saturday that could draw well over 100,000 people.

During Xi's first visit to Hong Kong as China's president, he will oversee the swearing in of the city's first female leader, Carrie Lam. He will also visit the local People's Liberation Army garrison, and meet establishment figures, although he is expected to avoid any grassroots engagement.

There has been talk Xi could hold a symbolic meeting with a few local democrats, an olive branch at a time of unprecedented tensions and mistrust between Hong Kong's opposition and Beijing, but it is unlikely to yield much of substance.

In a press conference on Wednesday by 20 of the city's pro-democracy lawmakers they said nothing had been confirmed.

The streets of Hong Kong have been festooned with Chinese flags and paraphernalia, including two huge harbourfront screens carrying celebratory messages. Upwards of 120,000 youngsters will join China-related activities at a time of growing disillusionment and bitterness towards Beijing among the city's younger generation.

Over the past five years under President Xi's tenure as Chinese leader and amid a ferocious crackdown on civil society and critics on the mainland, the squeeze on Hong Kong's autonomy has intensified, say diplomats, observers and activists.

"Things have changed. The central government has tightened its grip over Hong Kong," says political scientist Joseph Wong.

Celebration and protest as China president visits Hong Kong

Hong Kong on Thursday hit back at a decision by Moody's to cut its credit rating on the city, which the agency said was becoming increasingly close to mainland China.

The move was announced hours after the firm downgraded China for the first time in almost three decades, citing concerns about its ballooning debt and slowing economic growth.

Moody's decision came as China tries to clean up a toxic brew of unregulated and risky lending that for years has fuelled the economy's spectacular growth, though some analysts doubt Beijing's willingness to quit its debt addiction.

Beijing rejected the cut, saying Moody's had used an "inappropriate" method to assess the risks facing the economy.

In downgrading Hong Kong, the agency outlined the growing links between the city and the mainland, with banks increasing China-related lending, while its stock market is also linked to bourses in Shanghai and Shenzhen through separate tie-ups.

The city's involvement in China's Belt and Road initiative also brings its economy and financial systems closer to the mainland, Moody's said.

"The downgrade in Hong Kong's rating reflects Moody's view that credit trends in China will continue to have a significant impact on Hong Kong's credit profile due to close and tightening economic, financial and political linkages with the mainland," it said in a statement.

"The institutional features which grant Hong Kong, at present, a degree of political and economic independence -- together with the SAR's intrinsic credit strengths -- allow Hong Kong's rating to exceed that of China. But the two ratings, like the two regions, remain closely linked," it said.

Moody's cut Hong Kong from Aa1 to Aa2 but upped its outlook from negative to stable. Earlier it had downgraded China to A1 from Aa3 -- its first since 1989 months after the Tiananmen Square crackdown -- and also increased its outlook to stable from negative. It affirmed the Aa3 rating of Macau and upgraded its outlook to stable from negative.

Hong Kong's Finance Secretary Paul Chan said Thursday he "strongly disagreed" with the move.

"We are of the view that Moody’s has overlooked the sound economic fundamentals, robust financial regulatory regime, resilient banking sector and strong fiscal position that Hong Kong has," Chan said.

He also said the Belt and Road initiative will help Hong Kong businesses enter new markets, boosting the city’s economy, adding China is also a "key source of growth" for the global economy.

Jackson Wong, of Huarong International Securities, told AFP that he did not see the downgrade as necessary and it would have little impact on the city.

"I don't think it will affect investors' view on Hong Kong because they believe Hong Kong has a strong financial system. As of now the city, in every aspect, is still very strong and I don't see any deterioration.

Hong Kong is semi-autonomous after it was handed back to China by Britain in 1997. It preserved its financial and judicial systems and enjoys liberties not seen on the mainland.

Hong Kong's Chan Yuen-ting will smash another hole through football's glass ceiling when she makes history in the AFC Champions League on Wednesday -- but it couldn't be a tougher debut for the trailblazing female coach.

Chan, nicknamed "Beef Ball" and just 28 years old, will etch her name in the record books as the first woman worldwide to lead a professional men's team into continental competition, at the helm of Hong Kong's Eastern.

The game is not far from Hong Kong, in southern mainland China -- but it is against Guangzhou Evergrande, the mega-rich "Manchester United of Asia" with two Champions League titles and six straight domestic trophies to their name.

"I never imagined or expected this could happen but now we're going to play against him so I feel excited and I'm looking forward to meeting him," she told the Asian Football Confederation (AFC) website.

Football: First woman coach of men's team in a continental championship

There is no space for Hong Kong independence in the "one country, two systems" agreement under which Beijing governs the former British colony, but there can be tolerance for differences in their systems, a senior Chinese official said.

Chinese leaders are increasingly concerned about a fledgling independence movement in Hong Kong, which returned to mainland rule in 1997 with a promise of autonomy known as "one country, two systems", and recent protests in the city.

The head of China's Hong Kong Macau Affairs Office, Wang Guangya, told pro-Beijing Hong Kong magazine The Bauhinia that "under 'one country, two systems' there is absolutely no space for 'Hong Kong independence'", in comments carried in the ruling Communist Party's People's Daily on Saturday.

"Hong Kong is an inseparable part of the country, and in no situation is 'Hong Kong independence' allowed. This is a bottom line that cannot be touched in 'one country, two systems'," Wang said.

As "one country, two systems" is new, it has no ready-made experience to draw from, and it's normal that in this process "new situations, new problems and new challenges" will arise, he added.

"You can't expect it to be all plain sailing," Wang said. "The central government has confidence in and patience with Hong Kong. As long as the 'one country' principle is not damaged, the differences in the two systems' absolutely can be tolerated and respected," he added.

China's parliament last month staged a rare interpretation of the Basic Law, Hong Kong's mini-constitution, to effectively bar pro-independence city lawmakers from taking office there.

In separate comments from the same interview reported by the official Xinhua news agency late Friday, Wang said the interpretation did not harm the independence of Hong Kong's legal system, but that independence could not limit the Chinese parliament's ability to interpret the Basic Law.

"It needs to be pointed out that the independence of the legal system is an important principle of the rule of law in Hong Kong, and the central government has always cherished and protected the independence of Hong Kong's legal system."

Chinese President Xi Jinping told outgoing Hong Kong Chief Executive Leung Chun-ying last week that China's central government strongly supports efforts by the Hong Kong government to curb moves by some promoting independence for the global financial hub.

Hong Kong returned to China under the "one country, two systems" agreement that ensured its freedoms and wide-ranging autonomy, including a separate legal system.

But Communist Party rulers in Beijing have ultimate control, and some Hong Kong people are concerned they are increasingly interfering to head off dissent.

China says no space for Hong Kong independence

Thousands of people attended a pro-Beijing rally in Hong Kong on Sunday supporting China's decision to bar two pro-independence legislators from taking office.

Beijing's ruling came last week before a decision by the Hong Kong courts over lawmakers Baggio Leung and Yau Wai-ching's disqualification from the parliament.

The two allegedly misread their oaths of office deliberately, inserting expletives and draping themselves with "Hong Kong is not China" flags.

Beijing's interpretation of the city's constitution said that any oath taker who does not follow the prescribed wording of the oath should be disqualified, AFP reported.

People waving Chinese flags surrounded the government's headquarters on Sunday supporting the disqualification. Pro-democracy activists and legal experts called it a massive blow to Hong Kong's judicial independence.

Slogans like "fight against Hong Kong independence, support the interpretation" were heard at the rally by pro-Beijing legislators.

"The cancer cells are those who are promoting Hong Kong independence... we will fight them to the end," AFP reported lawmaker Michael Tien saying at the rally

Around 28,500 people attended the rally, police informed.

The Hong Kong high court's decision into whether the two should be disqualified is still pending.

Thousands attend pro-Beijing rally in Hong Kong

Beijing is mulling over banning the two Hong Kong lawmakers who advocate a split from China from taking up their seats in the Legislative Council (Legco), authorities in the special autonomous region said on Friday.

At a court hearing on Thursday, Hong Kong authorities sought to disqualify Baggio Leung and Yau Wai-ching from the Legco after they made invalid oaths, amid widespread fears that China is tightening its grip on the city.

China's top legislative body will discuss the law which states that council members must swear allegiance to the "Hong Kong Special Administrative Region of the People's Republic of China", AFP reported.

According to local media reports, China's National People's Congress Standing Committee (NPCSC) could issue an "interpretation" of Hong Kong's constitution on Monday in relation to the case.

"The interpretation of the NPCSC brings a lethal blow to the legal system and the rule of law in Hong Kong," lawmaker Leung was reported as saying by AFP after the announcement.

He also called the chairman of the NPCSC and the leader of the city "traitors to Hong Kong".

Yau and Leung are yet to be sworn into the Legco. Their first oath attempt last month was declared invalid. The two had draped themselves in "Hong Kong is not China" banners at the oath and had included derogatory terms and expletives in their pledges, the AFP report stated.

Government lawyer Benjamin Yu at Thursday's court hearing argued that Leung and Yau should not be allowed to take up their seats because they failed to swear allegiance to Hong Kong as an "inalienable part of China" at the oath-taking ceremony.

Maria Tam, a member of the Basic Law Committee, said that the NPCSC had asked for the Basic Law Committee's view on the matter.

Hong Kong: Pro-Beijing camp blocks swearing-in of democracy activists

Hong Kong rebel lawmakers swore, shouted, banged drums and railed against "tyranny" Wednesday when they took their oaths of office in the city's parliament, as calls grow for a split from Beijing.

The chaotic first meeting of the new term of the Legislative Council (Legco) came after a citywide vote last month saw victories for several lawmakers advocating more autonomy or even independence for Hong Kong.

The city is semi-autonomous under a "one country, two systems" deal sealed when Britain returned Hong Kong to China in 1997.

The arrangement protects Hong Kong's freedoms for 50 years, but there are increasing concerns those liberties are disappearing as Beijing tightens its grip.

Lawmakers are required to recite a short oath in Legco before they can officially take up their seats.

That oath declares repeatedly that Hong Kong is a "special administrative region" of China.

The government had warned lawmakers in advance they risked losing their seats if they did not take the oath properly.

Nathan Law, 23, Legco's youngest lawmaker and a former pro-democracy protest leader, delivered an impassioned speech ahead of taking the oath.

"You can chain me, you can torture me, you can even destroy this body - but you can never imprison my mind," he said, quoting India's independence leader Mahatma Gandhi.

Each time he referred to China in the oath, he changed the tone to turn it into a question.

Law, who is calling for self-determination for Hong Kong, was one of the main leaders of the 2014 Umbrella Movement rallies which brought tens of thousands to the streets calling for democratic reform.

Two new pro-independence lawmakers, Baggio Leung and Yau Wai-ching, added their own words before the oath, pledging to serve the "Hong Kong nation".

Both displayed flags emblazoned with the words: "Hong Kong is not China".

Leung took the full oath in English but refused to pronounce "China" correctly, instead calling it "Cheena".

Yau was distinctly heard saying "the People's Re-fucking of Zeena", instead of "the People's Republic of China" in her oath, although she denied that later, blaming her accent.

Risk to seats

New lawmaker Eddie Chu, who advocates a public referendum on Hong Kong's future sovereignty, shouted "Democratic self-determination! Tyranny will perish!" after taking his oath.

Teacher Lau Siu-lai, also a former Umbrella Movement activist, read every word of the oath at a snail's pace, prompting some pro-Beijing lawmakers to walk out.

The Legco clerk told Leung, Yau and one other pro-democracy lawmaker that he was unable to "administer" their oaths, because they had modified them.

It is not yet clear whether any of the lawmakers deemed not to have taken the oath properly will be barred from taking up their seats.

According to government rules, he must now refer those cases to the Legco president, due to be elected later Wednesday.

In a statement issued before the oath-taking, the government cited a law that stipulates "any person who declines or neglects to take an oath duly requested which he or she is required to take shall vacate office or be disqualified from entering on it".

Baggio Leung dismissed the possibility, telling AFP there was "no reason" to disqualify him.

The session was suspended after Law refused to return to his seat, questioning why the clerk had objected to the three lawmakers' oaths.

Rebel Hong Kong lawmakers swear, shout, bang drums, take oath of office

Several pro-independence candidates won seats in Hong Kong's legislative election which saw a record turnout in the Chinese-controlled city on Sunday, a result likely to further strain ties with Communist Party rulers in Beijing.

Hong Kong's pro-democracy opposition also kept its crucial one-third veto bloc in the 70-seat Legislative Council over major legislation and public funding that has helped check China's influence.

The vote, which ushered in a new crop of legislators including a 23-year-old former protest leader who vowed to "fight" the Chinese Communist Party, underscores growing frustration with how Beijing has handled its "special administrative region" and marks a significant turning point.

The former British colony was handed back to China in 1997 under a "one country, two systems" agreement that promised to maintain the global financial hub's freedoms and separate laws for at least 50 years, but gave ultimate control to Beijing.

Beijing officials have repeatedly warned Hong Kong not to stray too far and Chinese leaders will now have to decide how to respond. There was no immediate reaction in official Chinese media to the election results.

Despite the disqualification of six pro-democracy election candidates from the election in July on the grounds that they backed independence, at least five "localists" and younger democratic newcomers won seats, including one of the leaders from the mass democracy protests of 2014, Nathan Law.

Localists put the interests of Hong Kong before those of Beijing.

"I'm quite shocked," said Law, 23. "We inherit some spirit from the movement and I hope that can continue in the future... We still have to unite in order to have stronger power to fight the Chinese Communist Party."

Sunday's vote was the first major election since the student-led "Umbrella Revolution" protests of 2014 that blocked roads for 79 days in which Beijing gave no ground.

Since then, many disaffected youngsters have decried what they see as increasing Beijing interference stifling dissent and civil liberties, leading to a radicalisation of the political scene and occasional violent protests.

Several veteran democrats failed to retain their seats, as voters backed a new batch of younger democrats espousing self-determination and a more confrontational stance with China.

"It's a new era," said Lee Cheuk-yan, a democratic lawmaker who lost his seat after more than two decades in public office.

"People want change, change meaning that they want new faces ... but the price is a further fragmentation (of the democracy camp). Ideologically they're talking about independence and they want to assert themselves."

Hong Kong Secretary for Constitutional Affairs Raymond Tam said the government would do its best to "bring them around to a more centrist position".

"But it's too early to say if this will be an issue," he said.

Pro-establishment lawmakers like Elizabeth Quat said she hoped the issue of splitting from China wouldn't enter the legislature or it could damage Hong Kong's economic interests.

"Independence is not realistic at all," she said. "Hopefully, this will not be their main objective."

Voters flocked to cast ballots in record numbers with some having to wait several hours after the close of polling past midnight at congested voting booths, leading to some delays in vote counting on Monday.

"Hong Kong is really chaotic now. I want to do something to help," said 28-year-old Maicy Leung, who was in a snaking queue of several hundred. "It's to help the next generation and to help myself."

The Electoral Affairs Commission said 58 per cent of the city's 3.8 million eligible voters had cast their ballot, up from 53 per cent in 2012 and the highest turnout for any legislative election since 1997.
