Kunwar Narendra Singh of Rashtriya Lok Dal is trailing 64961 votes. The Congress has fielded Mahesh Pathak, an industrialist who contested from Mathura in 1998 and lost. The actress has been leading from the morning itself.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Mathura, one of the 80 seats in UP, voted in the second phase of national elections.</p>

<p>Hema Malini, whose election campaign got a boost when her actor-husband Dharmendra campaigned for her, insisted that she herself had done a lot of work in the past five years.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Meanwhile, Dharmendra's son Sunny Deol, who makes his debut in politics this election season is contesting on a BJP ticket from Gurdaspur, Punjab. Now, with PM Modi welcoming Bollywood into his fraternity, the floodgates are open for glamour (read: entertainment industry) to march into politics (read: corruption).</p>

<p>Of course, they all enter the murky world of politics with the best of intentions.&nbsp;</p>

<p>I remember Hema Malini telling me, "I've seen it all. I am no stranger to money and fame. So, I am not in this for wealth or a name. I am getting into politics to work among the grassroots section of the people."</p>

<p>True to her word, the Dream Girl has transformed her constituency - Mathura - into a bit of a dream. Good roads, solid civic amenities, new malls and cleaner, more serviceable temple facilities. I would rate Hema ji among the more accomplished actors-turned-politicians.</p>

<p>But the best actor-politician has to be Vinod Khanna. He transformed his constituency into a Garden of Eden. Gurdaspur, during Vinod's tenure, was a dream come true. Now it has passed on to Sunny Deol. It remains to be seen whether 'Sunny' days are ahead for the people of Gurdaspur. But I can tell you this. Sunny means well. He is honest and decent. But is he a right fit for politics? Decency and honesty are more disqualifications than recommendations for politics.</p>

<p>The latest to join the political bandwagon is my friend Urmila Matondkar. Her decision to dirty her pretty feet in what a legendary actor described as the cesspool of politics, took me by surprise. But then I thought, why not? If Rahul Gandhi can be thought of as a potential prime minister why can't Urmila be at least a Lok Sabha member?</p>

<p>For all the migration from movies to rajniti that we see these days, I still feel uneasy about the alliance between the two mutually exclusive worlds. I feel actors are good orators in front of the camera. But the lines that they deliver with such (rehearsed) passion at election campaigns must mean more than just a rousing histrionic performance.</p>

<p>In the North, actors have largely failed to deliver as politicians. I feel even in the South the days of iconic star-politicians like MGR, NTR and Jayalalitha are over. Kamal Haasan and Rajinikanth, who announced their entry into politics so grandiosely, are today stuck in their own contradictory statements on life and politics.</p>

<p>Dubbed an "outsider" by the Opposition, BJP MP Hema Malini has said she has a "divine connection" with Mathura, the city of Lord Krishna, and has no intention of becoming a minister.</p>

<p>The actor-turned-politician, who has been fielded once again by the BJP from the Mathura constituency, filed her nomination papers for the upcoming Lok Sabha elections earlier this week.</p>

<p>The 'mahagathbandhan' (grand alliance) of Samajwadi Party, Bahujan Samaj Party and Rashtriya Lok Dal has said that Mathura will witness an "outsider vs Brijwasi" battle as Hema Malini lives in Mumbai.</p>

<p>"Yes, I have a house in Mumbai. What is the problem with that? I have a house here also and I am a Virndavanwasi," Hema Malini told PTI in an exclusive interview.</p>

<p>"I am so involved with the city and I feel some divine connection with this city. I have been playing Radha and Meera throughout my life and I was in a temple only when my candidature was announced," she said.</p>

<p>The BJP MP said she also has to fulfil her professional commitments as an actor and a danseuse.</p>

<p>"In the last five years I have come here more than 250 times. People should understand that I am not just an MP and I have to use my talent as an actor and a danseuse as well. There is no need for me to be here 24 hours. I come and get things done in 10 days," Hema Malini said.</p>

<p>"I know that I can't satisfy the entire city, which is so huge, but I have done my work with utmost sincerity and will continue to do so in future as well," she said.<br />
Hema Malini said it pained her when people questioned her work in the last five years.</p>

<p>"I really feel hurt when someone asks 'apne kya kaam kiya?' (what work did you do). The first two years were difficult as I could not communicate (with the people). But in the last two years I was able to get things done with the support of the Centre and the state government," she said.</p>

<p>"Many projects have been sanctioned under Brij Teerth Vikas Parishad and I am working to revive the old heritage of Brij Mandal," she said, adding that she needed another five years for that.</p>

<p>"This is why I have decided to stay back," she said.</p>

<p>Despite being a star campaigner of the ruling BJP, the BJP MP said she was not eyeing a ministerial berth at the Centre and wants to focus on Mathura only.</p>

<p>"I am not a hardcore politician and I want to limit myself to Mathura only. I am asked many times if I want to become a minister and it sounds so strange. Being a minister is a full-time responsibility," Hema Malini said.</p>

<p>"Women ministers in Modiji's cabinet have done extremely well and I am proud of them, but this is not a competition," she said.</p>

<p>Rejecting speculation about differences in the BJP's local unit, Hema Malini said everyone is working together to ensure a second term for Prime Minister Narendra Modi.</p>

<p>"There is no infighting and my party workers have a lot of love and respect for me. They are supporting me in a big way and I am 100 per cent sure of winning with a bigger margin this time," she said.</p>

<p>Asked about her announcement, which she made after filing her nomination papers, that this election will be her last, Hema Malini said as of now, she was focussing on making the most of the next five years.</p>

<p>"We will talk about the future after five years. Let's see how much energy I will have left by then," she said.</p>

<p>Asked about the possibility of her family members campaigning for her, she said, "I can't say yet whether Dharamji will come. I wanted Esha to come but she is expecting a baby," she said.</p>

<p>Hema Malini had defeated RLD's sitting MP Jayant Chaudhary in 2014 by a huge margin of 3,30,743 votes in 2014.</p>

<p>This year, she is pitted against RLD's Kunwar Narendra Singh.</p>

Rejecting speculation about differences in the BJP's local unit, Hema Malini said everyone is working together to ensure a second term for Prime Minister Narendra Modi. "There is no infighting and my party workers have a lot of love and respect for me. They are supporting me in a big way and I am 100 per cent sure of winning with a bigger margin this time," she said. Asked about her announcement, which she made after filing her nomination papers, that this election will be her last, Hema Malini said as of now, she was focussing on making the most of the next five years. "We will talk about the future after five years. Let's see how much energy I will have left by then," she said. Asked about the possibility of her family members campaigning for her, she said, "I can't say yet whether Dharamji will come. I wanted Esha to come but she is expecting a baby," she said. Hema Malini had defeated RLD's sitting MP Jayant Chaudhary in 2014 by a huge margin of 3,30,743 votes in 2014. This year, she is pitted against RLD's Kunwar Narendra Singh. Voting will be held in Mathura in the second round of seven-phase Lok Sabha polls on April 18. Results will be announced on May 23.

<p>Some time ago, I was not at all alarmed and shocked to read Sanjay Dutt&#39; s confession that he wanted to break a leg (hers, not his own) when his elder daughter Trishala expressed a desire to become an actress. On the contrary, I was impressed by his honesty.</p>

<p>Dutt knows better than most what young heroines have to go through in this film industry.</p>

<p>And the way heroes talk about their leading ladies would make even the most misogynistic pervert blush. I remember a top leading lady of the 1960s telling me about this he-man hero, a pukka ladies&#39; man who would sit with his cronies on the set discussing his amorous exploits. One of them would turn the pages of a film magazine and point quizzically at the picture of every heroine featured. The he-man would nod in the affirmative or shake his head in the negative to indicate whether he had &#39;done&#39; her or not.</p>

<p>Things haven&#39;t changed. For all the talk of gender equality among the heroes, there is still that backroom boys&#39; talk about women that goes on in secret. There is a top-notch action hero of today, married to one of the most distinguished actresses of our times, who is in the habit of discussing lurid details of his heroines&#39; bedroom activities with him. Who needs porn when you can get it straight from stud&#39;s mouth?</p>

<p>Wait, don&#39;t wince yet. There are so many stories I&#39;ve heard about Dutt&#39;s adventures with leading ladies. I remember once, when he was shooting in Kolkata, everyone in the City of Joy was talking about how he vanished with the leading lady behind his vanity van for a good 45 minutes. Not inside the van, mind you, but behind. For all we know, Sanju Baba might have been discussing the script with your heroine.</p>

<p>We really don&#39;t need to get judgmental about what grown-up, consenting adults do when they&#39;re not working. But yes, many film families are wary of letting their daughters become part of the film industry.</p>

<p>I don&#39;t know whether Dharmendra threatened to break his eldest daughter&#39;s leg to keep her completely out of the limelight. The fact is, while the two sons - Sunny and Bobby Deol - were groomed to follow in their father&#39;s footsteps, we&#39;ve never seen Dharmedra&#39;s daughter from his first marriage in even a photograph.</p>

<p>I know for a fact that Dharam ji - a gem of a man in other ways but not quite the epitome of the liberal Indian male - didn&#39;t&#39; want his daughters from his second marriage with Hema Malini to become actresses. But Hemaji is made of sterner stuff than many star-wives who simply comply with their husband&#39;s patriarchal decisions.</p>

<p>I know for a fact that even today, girls from film families have to fight prolonged battles with their parents before getting into movies. Please note, Shah Rukh Khan&#39;s son is being readied for stardom. His daughter, we are told, is not keen on a movie career. And, I wonder if Boney Kapoor and Saif Ali Khan&#39;s daughters would be poised for a movie career if they didn&#39;t have persuasive, assertive actresses (Amrita Singh and Sridevi) for moms.</p>

<p>Before I leave you with that sobering thought, I must tell you about an incident that happened when Nawazuddin Siddiqui came home for dinner. His baby girl was just born and he proudly showed me her picture.</p>

<p>Nawaz looked sadly at me for a while. &quot;Please don&#39;t wish that on her,&quot; her said softly.</p>
