A heart transplant was successfully carried out on a six-year-old girl in the Ukrainian capital Kyiv amidst the constant danger of Russian missiles, reported CNN. The procedure was reportedly carried out on Sunday (July 9) at Heart Institute of Ukraine's Ministry of Health. The operation lasted for three hours and the girl was given the heart of a four-year-old boy who was previously declared brain dead due to an aneurysm.

The institute has said that this is the first heart transplant in Ukraine which involves children so young.

“The operation was also unique in that both the donor and the recipient were very young children, and the transplant required more effort from the doctors,” it said, as quoted by CNN.

The team of doctors who performed the surgery was led by Dr Boris Todurov, who is the chief scientist of the Department of Surgical and Minimally Invasive Treatment.

In a Facebook post, Dr Todurov said that the procedure went "smoothly" and that the girl was intubated for two hours.

The images released by the institute showed the mother of the boy whose heart was donated standing by the bedside of the girl.

CNN reported that three more organs of the boy were donated to two other boys. The organs donated were two kidneys and a liver.

“Many thanks to the parents of the little angel, who made an extremely noble act in this extremely difficult time for the family! You are people with a big and kind heart!” Dmytrieva said as quoted by CNN.

“May the little angel rest in peace. And a speedy recovery to the patients who got a chance for a full life!”

Ukraine is currently at war with Russia which invaded the country in February last year. Many cities, including the capital Kyiv, have been bombarded by Russia.&nbsp;

The researchers from Massachusetts General Hospital found that alcohol, when consumed in moderation, reduced the stress signalling in the brain which further appeared to account for a significant reduction in heart disease risk, as per a report published in the Journal of the American College of Cardiology on Monday.

“We are not advocating the use of alcohol to reduce the risk of heart attacks or strokes because of other concerning effects of alcohol on health,” senior author and cardiologist Ahmed Tawakol, co-director of the Cardiovascular Imaging Research Center at Massachusetts General Hospital said in a statement.&nbsp;

“We wanted to understand how light to moderate drinking reduces cardiovascular disease, as demonstrated by multiple other studies. And if we could find the mechanism, the goal would be to find other approaches that could replicate or induce alcohol’s protective cardiac effects without the adverse impacts of alcohol,” he said.

Though previous epidemiological studies have found that consuming alcohol in light to moderate quantities can lower the risk of cardiovascular disease, it isn't yet clear whether alcohol was the factor generating cardiovascular benefits, or if light/moderate drinkers’ health behaviours or socioeconomic status protected their hearts.&nbsp;

<h2>Study findings</h2>

The research amassed and analysed data from more than 50,000 individuals enrolled in the Mass General Brigham Biobank with the study divided into two parts.

In its first part, the research evaluated the relationship between light to moderate alcohol consumption and cardiovascular events after adjusting for genetic, clinical, lifestyle and socioeconomic factors. The researchers found out what the previous studies showed, that alcohol if consumed in light to moderate quantities, did reduce the risk of cardiovascular disease events.

In the second part, they evaluated brain imaging of 754 individuals to find out the effect of light, and moderate alcohol consumption on resting stress-related neural network activity which showed reduced stress signalling in the amygdala, the region in the brain associated with stress responses.

“We found that the brain changes in light to moderate drinkers explained a significant portion of the protective cardiac effects,” Tawakol said.

“When the amygdala is too alert and vigilant, the sympathetic nervous system is heightened, which drives up blood pressure and increases heart rate, and triggers the release of inflammatory cells,” Tawakol said. “If the stress is chronic, the result is hypertension, increased inflammation, and a substantial risk of obesity, diabetes, and cardiovascular disease.”

A woman in England recently visited a museum to see her own heart which was removed from her body 16 years ago by doctors during a life-saving transplant surgery. 
 
Jennifer Sutton, who hails from Ringwood in Hampshire, stated that it was "incredibly surreal" to see her own organ placed as an exhibit at Hunterian Museum in London. 
 
The 38-year-old Sutton said that she plans to promote organ donation which she described as "the greatest gift possible". 
 
Speaking to BBC, she said that now she was leading an active and busy life and plans to "keep myself going for as long as possible".

Sutton was studying at a university when she realised that she struggled to do moderate exercises, like walking up hills. 
 
The woman was quickly diagnosed with restrictive cardiomyopathy, which is a health condition that restricts the ability of the heart to pump blood around the body and was informed by the doctor that she would die if she did not receive a transplant. 
 
The health of Sutton, who was then 22 years old, deteriorated rapidly while she remained on the transplant waiting list. In June 2007, she received the news that a donor has matched her sample. 
 
She had been facing anxiety from the age of 13 when her mother lost her life following the same surgery. 
 
"I remember waking up after the transplant and thinking 'Oh my goodness I am actually a new person'. I remember doing a little double thumbs up dance to my family and saying 'I made it I made it',” she said.

<h2>A heart at display</h2>

Sutton permitted the Royal College of Surgeons to use her heart for a display and it is now open for all to see at the museum in Holborn. 
 
"The minute you first walk in you think 'that used to be inside my body'," she said. 
 
"But it's quite nice too - it's like my friend. It kept me alive for 22 years and I'm quite proud of it really. I've seen lots of things in jars in my lifetime but to think that's actually mine is very weird,” she added. 
 
Sutton stated that she wanted to take steps for promoting organ donation and added it made life-defining moments, such as her wedding, happen which otherwise appeared impossible.

WHO sees 'likely' COVID-19 vaccine link to rare heart inflammation

Formally known as “takotsubo cardiomyopathy”, the syndrome causes weakening of heart’s pumping chamber. First identified in 1990 in Japan, the syndrome is mistaken for cardiac arrests due to similar symptoms.

What did scientists find?

Scientists recently found two high stress molecules responsible for causing the broken heart syndrome, which mostly affects women after menopause and is caused in the aftermath of sever stress and loss.

Besides imitating the symptoms of a heart attack, the syndrome poses risks of similar complications. The worst part? Doctors are unsure what causes it. But it seems likely that a broken heart drives the ailment. High levels of stress causes by loss of a loved one, accidents, natural disasters and even events like weddings could be causing a loss of movement in the heart wall, which accelerates the failure of the organ.

Israel's Health Ministry said on Sunday it is examining a small number of cases of heart inflammation in people, who had received Pfizer's COVID-19 vaccine, though it has not yet drawn any conclusions.&nbsp;

Pfizer said it has not observed a higher rate of the condition than would normally be expected in the general population.&nbsp;

Israel's pandemic response coordinator, Nachman Ash, said that a preliminary study showed "tens of incidents" of myocarditis occurring among more than 5 million vaccinated people, primarily after the second dose. &nbsp;

Ash said it was unclear whether this was unusually high and whether it was connected to the vaccine.&nbsp;

Most of the cases were reported among people up to age 30.&nbsp;

"The Health Ministry is currently examining whether there is an excess in morbidity (disease rate) and whether it can be attributed to the vaccines," Ash said.&nbsp;

Ash, who spoke about the issue in a radio interview and during a news conference, referred to it as a "question mark", and emphasised that the Health Ministry has yet to draw any conclusions.&nbsp;

Determining a link, he said, would be difficult because myocarditis, a condition that often goes away without complications, can be caused by a variety of viruses and a similar number of cases were reported in previous years.&nbsp;

Pfizer, asked by Reuters about the review, said it is in regular contact with Israel’s Health Ministry to review data on its vaccine.&nbsp;

The company said it "is aware of the Israeli observations of myocarditis that occurred predominantly in a population of young men who received the Pfizer-BioNTech COVID-19 vaccine".&nbsp;

"Adverse events are regularly and thoroughly reviewed and we have not observed a higher rate of myocarditis than what would be expected in the general population. A causal link to the vaccine has not been established," the company said.&nbsp;

"There is no evidence at this time to conclude that myocarditis is a risk associated with the use of Pfizer/BNT COVID-19 vaccine."&nbsp;

Nadav Davidovitch, director of the school of public health at Israel's Ben Gurion University, said that even if a correlation between the myocarditis cases and the vaccine were established, it did not appear to be serious enough to stop administering the vaccine.&nbsp;

"It's a situation that should be looked into, and we need to wait for a final report, but in an interim analysis it seems the risk of getting sick from COVID-19 is much higher than from the vaccine's adverse events, and the risk of peri/myo-carditis following the vaccine is low and temporary," he said.&nbsp;

Heightened activity in the brain, caused by stressful events, is linked to the risk of developing a rare and sometimes fatal heart condition, a new study suggests.&nbsp;

The study, published in the European Heart Journal, found the greater the activity in nerve cells in the amygdala region of the brain, the sooner the condition known as Takotsubo syndrome (TTS) can develop.&nbsp;

"The study suggests that the increased stress-associated neurobiological activity in the amygdala, which is present years before TTS occurs, may play an important role in its development and may predict the timing of the syndrome," said researcher Ahmed Tawakol from the Massachusetts General Hospital in the US.&nbsp;

TTS, also known as 'broken heart' syndrome, is characterised by a sudden temporary weakening of the heart muscles that causes the left ventricle of the heart to balloon out at the bottom while the neck remains narrow, creating a shape resembling a Japanese octopus trap, from which it gets its name.&nbsp;

Since this relatively rare condition was first described in 1990, evidence has suggested that it is typically triggered by episodes of severe emotional distress, such as grief, anger or fear, or reactions to happy or joyful events.&nbsp;

Patients develop chest pain and breathlessness, and it can lead to heart attacks and death. TTS is more common in women with only 10 per cent of cases occurring in men.&nbsp;

The amygdala is the part of the brain that controls emotions, motivation, learning and memory. It is also involved in the control of the autonomic nervous system and regulating heart function.&nbsp;

For the study, the team involved 104 participants patients had undergone PET-CT scans between 2005 and 2019.&nbsp;

The researchers matched 41 people, who went on to develop TTS between six months and five years after the scan with 63 who did not. The interval between the scan, the onset of TTs, last follow-up or death was an average (median) of 2.5 years for the 104 patients.&nbsp;

The researchers found that people who went on to develop TTS had higher stress-related amygdalar activity on initial scanning (measured as a ratio of amygdalar activity to activity of brain regions that counter stress) compared to individuals who did not subsequently develop TTS.&nbsp;

There were three people in the chopper, but all three escaped without serious injuries, with the heart intact.

A rescue worker retrieved the organ from the helicopter, and handed it over to a medic at the hospital.

But that wasn’t enough. The hospital worker tripped over a metal plate, possibly debris from the helicopter crash. His colleagues came rushing over to secure the organ.

The hospital said that it had been successfully transplanted, and the patient is also doing very well.
