Also in the same period, a total of 9,09,985 tests were conducted across the country. India has so far conducted over 77.28 crore cumulative tests. 
 
Meanwhile, the weekly positivity rate has further come down to 0.77 per cent while the daily positivity rate has fallen at 0.60 per cent.

Supermarket chain ParknShop announced limits of five items per customer on&nbsp;staples&nbsp;such as rice, canned food and toilet paper, while pharmacy Watsons put the same limits on medication for pain, fever and colds.

"Effective today, ParKnShoP and Watsons&nbsp;Hong&nbsp;Kong&nbsp;will impose purchase restrictions on selected products and medication at all stores," Watsons said in a statement.

Both ParknShop and Watsons are units of the&nbsp;Hong&nbsp;Kong&nbsp;listed conglomerate CK Hutchison.

On Wednesday, ParknShop announced shorter opening hours, with some of its 200 branches shutting at 3 p.m. - by which time many shops across the Asian financial hub have been stripped of fresh and frozen meat and vegetables in recent days.

Mall operator HKTV said in an exchange filing on Friday that 20% of its "frontline manpower" was in quarantine.

Separately,&nbsp;Hong&nbsp;Kong's judiciary, citing health risks, said court hearings would be suspended between March 7 and April 11, with some exceptions, including bail applications, as well as cases involving people in custody and juvenile protection.

Covid-19: Hong Kong retail chains ration staples to curb panic buying

The US&nbsp;Centres for Disease Control Prevention (CDC) on Thursday said that almost 93 per cent of the population in the US lives in locations where the coronavirus level is so low that people do not need to wear masks indoors.

In an announcement on Friday, CDC eased its guidelines on when Americans should wear masks indoors, saying they can also drop them in counties experiencing low or medium COVID-19 levels.

COVID hospitalizations - a key benchmark for the new masking recommendations - continue to decline, as indicated by the latest figures.

The CDC, while&nbsp;announcing its revised guidelines said about 70 per cent&nbsp;of US&nbsp;counties and 72 per cent&nbsp;of the US&nbsp;population resides in communities where face coverings are no longer recommended.

The agency on Thursday said 85.4 per cent of counties are now ranked as low to medium risk and about 92.9 per cent of the population lives in those counties.

However, it is&nbsp;still to be determined whether the Biden administration will extend the mask&nbsp;requirements for travelling on airplanes, trains, buses or for transit hubs.

The current transit order expires on March 18 but can be&nbsp;extended. As per the White House the issue is still being evaluated.

The guidelines announced last week shifted its focus from COVID-19 transmission rates to infection rates, local hospitalisation and hospital capacity.

As per the earlier recommendations, only 5 per cent of the counties fell under the safe zone and could&nbsp;abandon wearing masks indoors, while&nbsp;95 per cent of were&nbsp;considered to be at risk for higher transmission.

Many federal agencies this week have told government employees that they can now stop wearing masks indoors in federal buildings in Washington, D.C. Area or in some low or medium Covid&nbsp;level areas including Pentagon, Transportation Department, Justice Department, State Department and Federal Aviation.

The financial hub is in the grips of its worst coronavirus outbreak, registering tens of thousands of new cases each day, overwhelming hospitals and shattering the city's zero-Covid strategy.

Authorities plan to test all 7.4 million residents this month and isolate all infections either at home or in a series of camps that are still being constructed with the help of mainland China.

City leader Carrie Lam had initially ruled out a mainland style&nbsp;lockdown&nbsp;where people are confined to their homes during the testing period.

But on Monday, health chief Sophia Chan confirmed it was still on the table, a day after a senior Chinese health official described it as the best option.

On Tuesday multiple&nbsp;Hong&nbsp;Kong&nbsp;media including HK01, Singtao and South China Morning Post also said authorities were planning a variety of&nbsp;lockdown&nbsp;options for the test period, citing sources.

SCMP's said the current favoured option was a nine-day "large-scale&nbsp;lockdown" where most residents would only be allowed out to by food.

One of the most densely populated cities on Earth,&nbsp;Hong&nbsp;Kong's supermarkets have limited backroom storage space and saw waves of&nbsp;panic&nbsp;buying&nbsp;at the start of the pandemic two years ago.

City apartments are also some of the smallest in the world leaving little space to stock up.&nbsp;

Rules change every day

The vast majority of&nbsp;HongKong's food is imported from mainland China and the current supply crunch has been worsened by cross border truckers getting infected by the high transmissible Omicron variant.

More than 190,000 infections have been recorded in the last two months compared to just 12,000 for the rest of the pandemic.

The government released a statement late Monday saying food supplies remained constant and that there was no need for&nbsp;panic&nbsp;buying.&nbsp;

"You don't need to worry about food and other necessities,&nbsp;Hong&nbsp;Kong&nbsp;has sufficient goods and material reserve," the city's number two official John Lee told reporters as he presided over the opening of a 3,900 bed isolation facility where mild infections will be treated.

But analysts said uncertainty and distrust were fuelling consumer habits.

"We have so many questions but all answers are 'to be confirmed'," Chan Ka-lok, an international politics scholar at Baptist University, wrote on social media.

"Rush to buy and stock up, let the people decide how to live their life."

Tom Grundy, editor of the&nbsp;Hong&nbsp;Kong&nbsp;Free Press news website, described the latest&nbsp;panic&nbsp;buying&nbsp;as "a massive failure of gov't communications".

"Rules changing every few days, u-turns, botched stats, poor data disclosure," he wrote on Twitter.

Faith in government assurances is low in&nbsp;Hong&nbsp;Kong, where authorities have carried out a two-year crackdown on dissent after huge democracy protests and have a history of backpeddling on promises.&nbsp;

The decision to mass test residents was itself a policy U-turn -- Lam had previously ruled out such a step before backing it last month.

It is not yet clear when testing will take place and what the government will do with all the cases it finds.&nbsp;

Some 70,000 isolation units for mild cases are due to come online in the coming weeks, in requisitioned hotels, public housing units and camps being built with Chinese help.

That will cover roughly two days of infections at&nbsp;Hong&nbsp;Kong's current official caseload.&nbsp;

Carnival week will still have concerts, parties and balls in Rio -- limited to 70 percent capacity, with vaccine and mask requirements.

But omicron led authorities to cancel carnival street parties for the second straight year, and postpone the famed samba school parade competition until April.

"We'll see some revenues"&nbsp;from&nbsp;the rescheduled parades, "but it won't come anywhere near pre-pandemic&nbsp;levels," said Fabio Bentes, an economist at the National Confederation of Trade in Goods, Services and&nbsp;Tourism&nbsp;(CNC).

Brazil&nbsp;is a bucket-list destination for many people, with the Amazon rainforest, the Pantanal wetlands, the colorful colonial capital of Salvador, the stunning waterfalls of Iguacu and myriad other must-sees -- not to mention Rio and carnival.

But the country has been hit hard by the&nbsp;pandemic, with nearly 650,000 deaths -- second only to the United States.

The numbers have improved with more than 70 percent of the population now fully vaccinated.

But visitors have been slow to return.

He spent eight months without work when the&nbsp;pandemic&nbsp;arrived, relying on food handouts to feed his family of four.

Tourists "are returning, but it's slow," he told AFP, saying his income is down about 80 percent.

"This place used to be&nbsp;bursting with tourists. Now there are hardly any."

Nearby, Miguel Viana, a 27-year-old engineer on vacation&nbsp;from&nbsp;Portugal, was on his way to visit the statue.

"The call of the journey was stronger than the&nbsp;pandemic," he said with a laugh.

But he is among the few. International tourist numbers remain at just five to seven percent of pre-pandemic&nbsp;levels, Sampaio estimates.

Study lead author Dr Amruta Nori-Sarma, assistant professor of environmental health at BUSPH, in a report by Science Daily said, "Emergency department visits represent some of the costliest interactions within the healthcare system."&nbsp;

Ardern said she was concerned the protest was becoming increasingly violent.

"The attacks on&nbsp;the police&nbsp;have been absolutely disgraceful," she said.

"To anyone down there who thinks they're part of a peaceful protest, that's not what we've seen today -- I would encourage them to leave."

Authorities had been taking a largely hands-off approach to the demonstration, trying to persuade&nbsp;protesters&nbsp;to voluntarily move on.

But Chambers said recent events showed "genuine&nbsp;protesters&nbsp;are no longer in control of the behaviour in and around parliament".

The&nbsp;protesters, inspired by Canada's "Freedom Convoy", have jammed roads with around 900 cars, trucks and campervans, then set up camp on the lawns of parliament.

They have erected tents and shelters, and organised portable toilets, food distribution points and childcare facilities.&nbsp;

Wellington residents have complained about being abused by&nbsp;protesters&nbsp;for wearing masks, while schools and businesses close to the camp have closed.

"Wellingtonians have had enough of this," Deputy Prime Minister Grant Robertson said.&nbsp;

"Our streets have been blocked, our people have been harassed, our environment has been trashed."

Robertson said those involved in the protest had crossed the line into illegal activity.

"This is a protest that has gone well beyond what I think most&nbsp;New&nbsp;Zealanders would see as a peaceful protest -- you've made your point, please leave now," he said.

Chambers said some moderate&nbsp;protesters&nbsp;had left because they were concerned about the behaviour of more extreme elements and&nbsp;police&nbsp;still hoped for a negotiated end to the demonstration.

"We continue to work really hard with leaders among the group to de-escalate the situation and ensure everyone is safe," he said.

In a move to free up beds for isolation, Lam said she had spoken with local hotel owners and security chief Chris Tang would oversee the operation of participating hotels.

Hong Kong was expected to report around 5,000 new cases on Thursday, Now TV reported, up from the previous day's record high of 4,285 confirmed infections and an additional 7,000 preliminary positive cases.

Some media reports, citing sources, said the government planned to test up to one million people each day from March and those who failed to comply would be fined HK$10,000 ($1,282).

The government did not respond to a request for comment.

Hong Kong has adopted the same 'dynamic zero' coronavirus strategy, employed by mainland China to suppress all outbreaks.

But the scale and speed of the highly contagious Omicron variant of the virus has left authorities scrambling. Hospitals are operating at maximum or over capacity with some patients treated in makeshift open air spaces outside medical centres in chilly and rainy weather.

Authorities said they could no longer keep up their testing and isolation mandates, resulting in a backlog that could not keep pace with the daily infection numbers.

The daily caseload was up from 57,175 in the previous day, topping 90,000 for the first time in the country, Xinhua news agency reported. 
 
The recent resurgence was driven by infections in the Seoul metropolitan area amid the rapid spread of the Omicron variant, which became a dominant strain here.

Of the new cases, 18,834 were Seoul residents. The number of newly infected people living in Gyeonggi province and the western port city of Incheon was 27,954 and 5,817, respectively.

Ardern said in a news conference later in the day that the protesters have demanded the government remove all public health COVID-19 measures.

"That means at the very point where we are seeing an increase in cases and an increase in risk to the public health and well-being of New Zealand, they want to see removed the very measures that have kept us safe, well and alive. You'll forgive me if I take a very strong view on that suggestion," Ardern said.
