<p>The hit 'Game of Thrones' fantasy franchise may be expanded to animation in a new series for streaming service HBO Max, The Hollywood Reporter said on Wednesday.<br />
<br />
Executives at HBO Max, owned by AT&amp;T Inc`s WarnerMedia, have started holding meetings with writers about a possible animated drama series for an adult audience, the publication said.<br />
<br />
An HBO spokesperson had no comment on the report. 'Game of Thrones',&nbsp;based on novels by George R.R. Martin, became a global phenomenon and won 12 Emmy awards, including the top prize of best drama series.<br />
<br />
The show ended its run on HBO in 2019. Executives have been working to develop new programming in the franchise as they compete with Walt Disney Co, Netflix Inc and others vying for streaming viewers.<br />
<br />
HBO is currently working on a spinoff series called 'House of the Dragon',&nbsp;which will take place 300 years before the events of "Game of Thrones." That series is expected to debut next year.</p>

Executives at HBO Max, owned by AT&T Inc`s WarnerMedia, have started holding meetings with writers about a possible animated drama series for an adult audience, the publication said. An HBO spokesperson had no comment on the report. 'Game of Thrones', based on novels by George R.R. Martin, became a global phenomenon and won 12 Emmy awards, including the top prize of best drama series. The show ended its run on HBO in 2019. Executives have been working to develop new programming in the franchise as they compete with Walt Disney Co, Netflix Inc and others vying for streaming viewers. HBO is currently working on a spinoff series called 'House of the Dragon', which will take place 300 years before the events of "Game of Thrones." That series is expected to debut next year.

Asked if the pandemic had altered the cinema experience, Jenkins said COVID-19 has been a "nail in the coffin of things that some people wanted to change".<br />

"However, I don't think this is a done deal. People love the theatrical experience and I feel like there's going to be an interesting backlash from a lot of artistes in the filmmaking community, including myself, to just changing things for the sake of it. A lot of us are going to fight pretty hard to go back to the theatrical experience only when this is over," she added.<br />

Directors Christopher Nolan, whose latest movie "Tenet" was released by Warner Bros in theatres, and Denis Villeneuve, whose upcoming "Dune" is among 17 films that are set to be available both theatrically and on the streamer, have criticised the studio for the decision.<br />

"Within the crowded constellation of entertainment brands, HBO is a crown jewel," said University of Southern California communications professor Christopher Smith.<br />

"They're using the HBO brand bludgeon to break their way through in the streaming wars."<br />

The platform enters a competitive marketplace. Besides Netflix, Amazon Prime and Hulu, the likes of Disney+, Apple TV+ and Quibi have recently joined the fray.<br />

But having licensed its films and series to other streamers for years, parent company WarnerMedia felt it could no longer skirt the direct-to-consumer revolution seizing Hollywood.<br />

HBO Max's launch follows telecoms giant AT&amp;T's $85 billion purchase of Time Warner, and brings that sprawling media empire's titles under one roof.<br />
