Roger Federer has given cold comfort to the next generation of men's players hoping for Grand Slam glory, saying he, Novak Djokovic and Rafa Nadal are still deserving favourites to claim the game's biggest trophies.&nbsp;

The top three seeds at Melbourne Park raffled all four of the majors between them last year, with Federer winning his sixth Australian Open, Nadal claiming his 11th French Open and world number one Djokovic sweeping Wimbledon and the US&nbsp;Open.&nbsp;

The Swiss master is bidding for his 21st Grand Slam crown and a hat-trick of Melbourne titles this year, and he sailed into the third round on Wednesday with a straight sets win over British qualifier Dan Evans.

Pundits have decried the younger generation's failure to break into the Grand Slam cartel enjoyed by the old guard but have some tipped change at the top this year.

The 21-year-old Alexander Zverev, who claimed the ATP Tour Finals and is seeded fourth in Melbourne, is often touted as the player most likely to upset the apple cart but has only a solitary Grand Slam quarter-final to his name, at Roland Garros last year.

"There are other guys, no doubt about it," said 37-year-old Federer, who will play American Taylor Fritz in the third round.

"I think also with Sascha (Zverev) holding the World Tour Finals, I think it's fair to say that even though he has not ripped through those Slams yet, he will go deep this year definitely at one of them.

"Maybe even here. We'll see."

Aggressive defending champion Caroline Wozniacki powered into the Australian Open third round Wednesday with a confidence-boosting romp over Sweden's Johanna Larsson.

The third-seeded Dane snuffed out a late rally from the world number 77 to win 6-1, 6-3 and continue her bid to become the first woman to defend the Australian title since Victoria Azarenka in 2013.

The victory sets up the potential for an enthralling third round encounter between the Dane and Maria Sharapova, who meets Rebecca Peterson in the second round.

Wozniacki moved freely and showed no sign of the rheumatoid arthritis that has threatened to derail her career.

"I thought I started pretty well, started aggressively, but she started making less errors and I was just trying to stay consistent," the 28-year-old said.

Wozniacki came out of the blocks quickly, leaving Larsson reeling as she conceded only two points on the way to a 3-0 lead.&nbsp;

The Swede regrouped from the early onslaught but Wozniacki continued to dictate terms and showed no signs of fatigue as she moved Larsson around the court during long rallies.

She wrapped up the first set in 27 minutes, pouncing on Larsson's popgun serve and coping easily when the Swede tried to put her under pressure by attacking the net, making 95 per cent of her returns.&nbsp;

Wozniacki's intensity eased slightly in the second set and there was a minor wobble late in the match when Larsson threatened a break.

It was Osaka's first Grand Slam match since her breakthrough US&nbsp;Open triumph last year, which was partly overshadowed by a row between her final opponent Serena Williams and umpire Carlos Ramos.

Osaka's heavy ball striking makes it very difficult for opponents to trade blows with her.

"For me, I'm aware of people saying anyone in the top 10 can be No. 1 right now - but for me, that's not really my goal," Osaka, the fourth seed, told reporters.

"I just want to play well in this tournament."

Linette tried to mitigate her rival's power by standing up near the baseline during rallies to avoid getting pushed too far back.

"Playing him for the first time I didn't know what to expect," said the Serbian top seed.&nbsp;

"He was very competitive and I had to work hard. I enjoyed it, hope you did too," he said.

Djokovic closed out last season magnificently, making an astonishing climb back from outside the world's top 20 in June, winning Wimbledon and the US Open on the way to reclaiming the number one ranking in November.

It was a stark contrast to the way he exited Melbourne a year ago at the hands of South Korea's Chung Hyeon in the last 16.&nbsp;

He then struggled as elbow surgery was followed by a string of poor results.

Djokovic will take a trip down memory lane next when he plays old foe Jo-Wilfried Tsonga in the second round.&nbsp;

Frenchman Tsonga was on the losing side in the 2008 Australian Open final as Djokovic won his first of 14 Grand Slams.

"I felt comfortable straightaway when I hit balls on that court. It was just a good feeling," she said of her return to Rod Laver Arena, the scene of last year's three-set triumph over world number one Simona Halep.

"Then, you see your photos all over the place, which is cool. So it's definitely great to be back."

Wozniacki seeded third at this year's tournament, said she was carefully managing her arthritis, a condition which sometimes leaves her so exhausted she can barely move her arms.

"For me, it's just all the time making sure I get good massaging, good treatments, ice baths, stretching, do everything even more thoroughly than maybe in the past," she said.

She added that she had not changed her playing style and had learned to recognise symptoms of arthritis to avoid flare-ups.

"I think especially as an athlete, you're even more aware of it. You know your body even better," she said.&nbsp;

"It's kind of hard to put into words, but I can definitely tell the difference whether it's just soreness from training or soreness from that (arthritis)."

She said the pre-season routine was unchanged, aside from some extra gym work to keep in shape before training began in earnest.

After such a rollercoaster 2018, Wozniacki said she needed "to leave the racquet behind for a while" during the off-season, recharging her batteries in the Maldives and the Virgin Islands.

The avid Liverpool fan also visited the less sunny climes of Anfield to see her beloved team in action, indulging in the local fare after cheering Jurgen Klopp's men on to victory.

"They have great burgers right outside. There's a huge line outside one of them... they had fries, all sorts of stuff," she said.&nbsp;

He dismissed suggestions that his Australian Open appearance could motivate more players in the world's second-most populous country.

"I don't think there is any lack of motivation. We don't have the system in place to produce players so no matter how much motivation is there we will not produce any players even if I make the final," Gunneswaran said.

"Somdev has been 70 and we had other players in the past who have been top 30 but that didn't produce another 100 players.

"I don't think me doing something here will make a drastic change. It will change my life but when it comes to Indian tennis I don't think so."

Gunneswaran feels India's search for quality singles players would not end anytime soon.

"We need an entire system and infrastructure, from coaches to fitness trainers, a centre where the youngsters can go and play and develop and get better," he said. "We don't have that kind of a consistent system in India.

"Here I am playing a professional event and I have to focus and do everything that I can to do well. Obviously, there is a certain amount of expectation that comes with being currently the number one in India. I am going to step on the court and give it my best and hope that I can come out on top."

Gunneswaran had missed out on playing in the French Open main draw last year as a lucky loser as he had left Paris to play a Challenger event.

He is coming off a strong 2018 during which he rose to a career-high 104 in November following strong results and two Challenger titles.

The 21-year-old has proved repeatedly he has the weapons to upset titans like Roger Federer and Novak Djokovic but has only a solitary quarter-final appearance at the Grand Slams to his credit, at last year's French Open.

Wielding a monster serve and renowned as one of the game's purest shot-makers, the German is still regarded as the most capable of the next generation of players to break the Grand Slam cartel of the old guard.

But he admits he will need a change of mindset when he marches out onto the blue hardcourts at Melbourne Park and play with the same freedom that saw him claim his maiden ATP Tour Finals crown at the end of the 2018 season.

"Look, I always enjoy playing," he told reporters on Saturday.

"I always enjoy competing, playing the sport that I love. There's always a lot of pressure to it, always the question of: 'When are you going to win a Grand Slam?

"I came to London before, and I wasn't playing my best ... I really wasn't playing well. I came to London saying, 'Look, it's the last tournament of the year, we're all tired, you want to go on holidays. I want to enjoy it as much as I can. I'm playing the best players in the world, I'm going to see how it goes.'

"At the end of the week, I won the tournament. I kind of learned out of that. I kind of figured out I have to have the same mentality when I play at slams. I hope I can achieve that."

Zverev has never made the second week at Melbourne Park and there was little joy in his third round exit last year.

After trading blows in a tense 'Next Gen' duel with South Korean semi-finalist Chung Hyeon, he cracked under pressure in the fourth set and was bageled in the last.

Zverev is now coached by Ivan Lendl, who helped Andy Murray break his long drought at Grand Slams, and has already credited him for helping raise his game.

He has not had an ideal preparation for Melbourne, however, and comes into the tournament without a competitive match under his belt since the November Tour Finals.

He was forced to pull out of the World Tennis Challenge exhibition in Adelaide last week and rolled his ankle during practice at Melbourne Park on Thursday.

He said the ankle had still not completely healed but did not feel it would affect his tournament ahead of a first round match against unseeded Slovene Aljaz Bedene.

"It's just a little bit swollen. I didn't actually twist

it," he said.

"I just kind of went over it a little bit. You know, actually what happened was a bone pushed against another bone.

"There was, like, inflammation between those two bones.

World number two Roger Federer says he is mulling a return to the European clay-court season in 2019 following a two-year absence.

Federer, speaking to ESPN on the sidelines of this weekend's Laver Cup, has skipped the clay-court segment of the season since 2017 in order to conserve energy for Wimbledon and hard-court seasons.

However the 37-year-old revealed he is rethinking his scheduling for next season, and may yet play on clay.

"The clay-court season is under review," Federer told ESPN. "It's not off the table. I will know by the end of the year."

Three ATP Masters events are held on clay as well as several smaller tournaments in the build up to the French Open.

Federer said if he does opt to play the clay-court season it will require a significant tweak of his training regime.

"I would like to make up my mind ahead of time so I can plan my buildup, my fitness schedule, even the way I would approach my December practice sessions," Federer said. "It could benefit the clay-court season.

"This is something that is obviously a big deal. If you play the clay, it changes everything."

Federer has won a record 20 Grand Slam singles titles but clay has been his least favourite surface. His haul of Grand Slam titles includes only one victory at Roland Garros, in 2009, when he completed his career Grand Slam.

He last reached the French Open final in 2011, when he was beaten in four sets by Rafael Nadal.

Simona Halep believes this year's French Open victory has helped justify her position as the women's world number one, with the Romanian saying she was now playing pressure-free tennis and motivated to add more Grand Slam titles to her resume.

Speaking to a small gathering of reporters in a phone interview on Friday, the 26-year-old also earmarked US&nbsp;Open champion Naomi Osaka as a huge prospect for the future after the Japanese player made her major breakthrough in New York.

"My dream was to become number one and I managed that last year and then my goal was to win a Grand Slam because some consider that a sign of being a true number one," Halep, who has topped the rankings for 46 weeks in total, explained.

"So my motivation was to win a major after I reached the top of the rankings and now I feel relaxed after achieving both. I am still motivated to win every match and now the pressure feels off, I can just feel the pleasure of playing."

Halep knows all too well the pain of losing a Grand Slam final after suffering three failures in as many title matches before she rallied past American Sloane Stephens in Paris to prevail 3-6 6-4 6-1 on her favourite clay surface in June.

The mental and physical exertion of that triumph seemed to take a toll on the base-liner midway through the season but Halep believes her form in North America indicated she was close to playing her best tennis.

"It wasn't a huge disaster after I won the French Open. I won in Canada and reached the final in Cincinnati in consecutive weeks," she said.

"That meant a lot to me and gave me confidence to believe my level is still there, but in the Grand Slams... at Wimbledon I was really tired and emotional, and grass is always difficult for me.

"I did have a match point in the third round (loss to Hsieh Su-wei) and Kaia Kanepi just played really well at the US&nbsp;Open and I just couldn't put it together to win the match or make it closer," she added of her first-round loss in New York.

"I feel my form is really good now but you never know, we'll see... I am just trying to stay focused and do my best."

Serena Williams marked an astounding Grand Slam return by defeating Kristyna Pliskova 7-6 (7-4) 6-4 and romped through the second round at the Roland Garros on Tuesday.

Dressed in a skintight, all-in-one black bodysuit, broken up by a vivid scarlet belt, Serena captivated the French crowd from the start of the contest.

After winning the match, former world number one said that she felt like a "superhero" in the black catsuit that she wore during the match.

The temperature hit 25C in Paris but it did not seem to affect the Serena in her come back match.

Three-time champion Serena Williams returns to Grand Slam tennis on Tuesday and will play against Kristyna Pliskova in the Round of 128 on Court Philippe Chatrier.

Former world number one has not played any major tournament after winning the Australian Open 2017. She was able to use her protected ranking to enter the French Open.

Serena has since crashed to 453 in the world as a result, however, she can use the initial rounds to improve her ranking.

The former world number one briefly returned for the American hardcourt season but suffered early losses to sister Venus and Naomi Osaka in Indian Wells and Miami respectively.

Also, current world number one Simona Halep, chasing a maiden grand slam crown, will start her campaign against American Alison Riske.

French Open: Serena Williams set for Grand Slam return

Former world number one Kim Clijsters believes Serena Williams will get back to the top, but warned it may take time for her to regain full strength after childbirth.

Williams will play her first Grand Slam after more than 15 months at the French Open after having her daughter, Alexis Olympia. She has played just two events since she first returned to the Tour in March.

"Pregnancy is very hard to (come back from),” Clijsters told Reuters in an interview. "Everything is a lot looser, it takes time to get that back to where it once was.&nbsp

"I remember doing an interview when Serena was pregnant and people were asking me constantly, do you think she can do it? My thing was, you don’t know how your body will react, how you will react emotionally.

"I admire both Serena and Venus because they have a perseverance that is incredible. They’re able to do a lot of things that other people can’t do, physically and mentally, so I don’t doubt that she will come back, I don’t doubt it, but it just takes a little bit of time.”

Clijsters, who is working as an expert summariser for Eurosport and Eurosport Player, who will be broadcasting Roland Garros from May 27 to June 10, retired from tennis in 2007.

She returned to the sport in 2009, a year and a half after having her first child, Jada.

Then 26, Clijsters enjoyed a hugely successful return, winning the U.S. Open in just her third event back and then going on to win two more Grand Slams to take her career tally to four.

Williams has been working hard with her coach, Patrick Mouratoglou, at his academy near Nice, balancing her training regime with her new family life.

Clijsters said getting back into the old routine may have had a rejuvenating effect on Williams.

"Every body reacts differently,” she said, of the physical demands.&nbsp

"Having a baby is emotional and physically very draining – at times you’re on a high, at times you’re low.

"I fell in love all over again with the sport and I enjoyed taking those few hours off from home to go and work out and play tennis, because I needed it, for various reasons, not just because I wanted to get back into shape.

"I’d just lost my father at the start of 2009 and for me it was a mindset, to get away from it and just focus on tennis. Then I would come home, I’d be with Jada, we’d do family things and I felt like my balance was good and I needed it."

Williams will play Kristyna Pliskova of the Czech Republic in the first round in Paris and could face her old foe, Maria Sharapova, in the last 16.

That&rsquo;s exactly Roger Federer did last week when he reached the summit position of ATP ranking at the age of 36 &frac12; years; the oldest ever to do so.

There has been a flurry of surprises from the great man over the past 13 years. Federer won record 8th&nbsp;Wimbledon title in July 2017 and surprised the world when he won Australian Open in 2018 as 17th seed player; it was his first grand slam after 4 &frac12; years. &nbsp;Early this year he became the first man in the history to win 20 Grand Slam and now the ATP&nbsp;&nbsp;ranking. It was in 2012 when he was a top ranking player last time at the ATP. This is a record of longest gap between two peak rankings (more than five years). That&rsquo;s not all, as far as records are concerned. He reached the peak of ATP ranking first time in 2004. Thus the window for top ATP ranking for Federer spanned for 14 years; it is another world record. The second best is Nadal, who had a window of 9 years &ndash; way behind Federer.

Till 2016, the discussions was that perhaps Federer is the all-time greatest Tennis player but it would be now silly to even deliberate on that. Federer is by far the greatest ever Tennis player.&nbsp;After Federer took the number one ranking last week, I saw an interesting thread on social media where people were arguing that Federer is best ever sportsperson across all sports. Quite interesting but this discussion is actually worthy enough to take place that leave apart Tennis, Federer perhaps is the best sportsperson - all sports, all-times.

Some may frown on this discussion as it is extremely subjective and contentious issue. There is no definite thumb rule or any mathematical model to gauge greatness. It is not an easy task to even compare sportspersons within same sports from different playing era. Thus comparison of players across various sports and across different time zone would surely be an arduous task.

Some would say what about 23 Olympic Gold Medals by Michael Phelps, while some may say that Usain Bolt is the greatest ever with nine Olympic gold medals in sprints. A soccer lover would say how can you ignore a thousand goals by Pele, he is the greatest while a Tennis lover would claim that Federer has won 20 Grand Slams. What about Serena Williams with 23 and Steffi&nbsp;&nbsp;Graf with 22 grand slams? Similarly, there can be multiple other arguments. 
So, it is a tough question but what are the arguments, which supports Federer&rsquo;s case?&nbsp;

A sportsperson is judged on two parameters &ndash; numbers/statistics and slickness &amp; beauty in playing style. Federer scores high on both of these parameters. With 20 Grand Slams and 14 years of grand slam winning spree, numbers&nbsp;unequivocally&nbsp;support Federer. Apart from that, Federer is undisputed the most alluring Tennis player ever. His game is inclusive, he has quick and balanced service, his single-handed backhand is majestic and he sends the ball to the other side of the net with clinical precision.

Federer has been immortalized in a sport which is truly popular across the globe, needs ultimate athleticism and skills and has a tremendous fan following. Moreover, it is an individual sport and therefore Federer is bound to have higher ratings than someone who has excelled in team sports (Like Pele or any of those NBA stars)

Federer has redefined the word longevity. Men&rsquo;s Tennis is one of the most competitive and demanding sports and maintaining a winning spree for more than a decade and a half is truly incredible. The competition at ATP is cut-throat and a slight fall in your fitness level and form can simply lead to a total nosedive. The game is ever evolving and unless you continually improve your game, it is not possible to keep winning against the players from different generations. Take the case of Sachin Tendulkar. Tendulkar scored a Test century in 1990 and then he also scored it in 2011 as well when the very next generation of bowlers had come. That is where the greatness of Tendulkar is that he maintained his game across two generations.

Federer maintained the same kind of level&nbsp;for close to two decades&nbsp;in a sport which evolves even far more rapidly and this puts him in a different league and at a much higher notch altogether.&nbsp;Federer scores high over Serena Williams and Steffi Graf simply because of the reason that&nbsp;Men&rsquo;s Tennis is far more powerful competitive and sapping. Federer also scores high on beautiful and inclusive tennis, which he plays.

Roger Federer is definitely a serious contender for greatest ever sportsperson mankind has seen across all sports, notwithstanding the fact that this is a difficult discussion.

In the last, please don&rsquo;t ever think that Federer has now achieved his peak. For sure you would be proven wrong again by the great man. My take is that basis current situation, he is already a contender to claim Wimbledon and US Open as well during this year.
