On a freezing evening at Villa Park, Unai Emery's men emphasised the size of the task facing Potter with a second half fightback that exposed West Ham's defensive flaws.
Amadou Onana equalised before Morgan Rogers bagged the winner to leave Potter holding his head in frustration.
The former Brighton boss is back in management for the first time since being dismissed by Chelsea in April 2023.
Potter lasted less than seven months at Chelsea, losing 11 times in his 31 games in charge and slumping to 11th place in the top-flight despite a &pound;288 million ($351 million) spending spree in his one transfer window.

Chelsea have sacked manager Graham Potter, the London club said on Sunday after a string of poor results left the expensively-assembled team 11th in the Premier League. Potter had been signed by Chelsea's new ownership in September after they prised him away from Brighton &amp; Hove Albion but the Englishman lasted 31 games, winning only 12, before the owners pulled the trigger.

While Potter oversaw wins in the Champions League where they topped their group after beating AC Milan twice and knocked out Borussia Dortmund, their league form nosedived as they fell out of the top four and into the bottom half of the table.

His last game in charge was Chelsea's 2-0 loss at home to Aston Villa on Saturday which led to boos and jeers from the fans at Stamford Bridge as the result left them 12 points off the top four and in danger of missing out on Europe next season.

"The challenge for us is to build them up and to make sure they're right from a gametime perspective but it's good that Wesley, Mateo and Denis are with the group," the manager added.

Meanwhile, despite struggling to deliver in the Premier League where they are seated at 10th place with just 31 points in 22 games, Chelsea has a better record to flex in Champions League – having won the past four matches.
