The quest for the Green Jacket is underway. The first Golfing Major of the year began earlier on Thursday at the Augusta National Golf Club. Scottie Scheffler is bidding for back-to-back titles and that will make him just the fourth man to defend a Masters title. Rory McIlroy has not won a Major since 2014 and needs to win at Augusta to complete the Grand Slam. Jon Rahm had three wins at the start of the year and the three players have made the battle for the No. 1 ranking a spectacle. Five-time winner Tiger Woods is competing this week as well in what is just his second start of the year. His great rival Phil Mickelson is making a 30th start at Augusta and remains confident about adding to the three titles he has won previously. There are 18 LIV players in the field as well and the expected cold vibes between players on both sides of the Golfing divide turned out to be a non-starter. A LIV player winning on Sunday will be a massive public relations coup for the new league. Veteran Golf writer Joy Chakravarty sets up the 87th edition of the Masters in a conversation with Sports Editor Digvijay Singh Deo.

The Masters are underway...Golf's Best battle for the Green Jacket

The world's greatest golfers face each other on Thursday for the first time since the bitter LIV Golf-PGA Tour split divided the sport and appropriately it is the timeless tranquility of Augusta National that provides the arena.

Given the tradition of the Masters tournament, with the famous winner's green jacket, the striking absence of advertising, the pristine course and the palpable sense of historic significance, it is perhaps not surprising that both sides of the divide caused by the breakaway Saudi-backed LIV Golf League have been observing an informal cease-fire.

Legal battles remain to be fought and the name-calling may well resume next week but the words of those involved in the first major tournament of the year have been a refreshing acknowledgement that Augusta is no place for public squabbling.

"I think this tournament is bigger than all of that," said Northern Ireland's Rory McIlroy, the world number two.

"It's narrative and a storyline, but the Masters and the four major championships sit above all that noise, and that's the way it should be this week."

Not everyone received the memo. LIV Golf's chief executive officer, Greg Norman, talked in a pre-tournament interview of the entire LIV contingent being ready to crowd around the 18th green to celebrate a victory by of one of their 18 competitors.

But it was noticable that McIlroy, who has been one of the most partisan backers of the established PGA Tour, chose to practice on Tuesday with one of the top LIV contenders, American Brooks Koepka.

McIlroy has been rotating top spot in golf's rankings with current world number one Scottie Scheffler and Spaniard Jon Rahm and that trio are among the favorites to triumph on Sunday at the end of what is forecast to be a rain-affected four days.

"You've seen just a pretty high level of consistency from us so far this year," defending champion Scheffler said. "We've been pretty close to winning most of the elevated events."

McIlroy would complete the career Grand Slam with a victory on Sunday while Rahm would become the fourth Spaniard to win at Augusta after Seve Ballesteros, Jose Maria Olazabal and Sergio Garcia.

LIV has contenders

Critics might dismiss the LIV contingent as having opted for a lucrative 'retirement' from elite competition, their ranks contain plenty of players with experience at clinching major titles.

Australian Cameron Smith, the reigning British Open champion, tied for third at Augusta last year, Koepka has won four majors and Dustin Johnson, who won LIV's first season, put on the green jacket in 2020.

Three-time Masters winner Phil Mickelson, 52, would be a surprise challenger at this stage of his career but Augusta always has room for nostalgia and the veterans never need reminding that in 1986, Jack Nicklaus won at the age of 46.

More recently, in 2019, Tiger Woods became the second oldest player to win the tournament, with his remarkable comeback victory at the age of 43.

Woods, though, is sadly now in the nostalgia category, his multiple injuries restricting his participation in the PGA Tour and leaving him worrying about if his body will survive four rounds and if this might be his final Masters.

"I don't know how many more I have in me," said the 15-time major winner, who was in a reflective mood.

"It's such a special place and it means so much to me in my heart to be able to come here and play this golf course and just appreciate the memories that I've had here."

Former winners Nicklaus, Gary Player and Tom Watson will get the tournament under way on Thursday with the ceremonial start.

For those wondering which of the 88 players in the field will be sliding on the green jacket as the sun sets on Sunday, it's perhaps worth recalling Nicklaus's famous reflection on the course.

"Augusta National is a young man's golf course," he said. "And you really need a young man's nerves to play on it."

Brooks Koepka warmed up for next week's Masters with the second LIV Golf title of his career on Sunday after clinching a two-shot victory in the upstart circuit's Orlando event.

Four-time major champion Koepka, one of the biggest names to defect from the PGA Tour to the Saudi Arabia-backed circuit last year, fired a closing three-under 68 to claim the win at Orlando's Orange County National Course.

The 32-year-old American rattled in four birdies and one bogey to finish on 15 under and pocket the $4 million winner's prize – $1.3 million more than the winner of next week's first major of 2023 at Augusta will receive.

"I'm finally healthy and it's good to play some good golf," said Koepka, who has struggled with a litany of injuries in recent seasons.

"It gives me chills thinking of the capabilities of what I can do when I'm healthy. Going into next week that's what you want to see."

Koepka is the first player on the LIV Golf circuit to win two events, with his Orlando victory following on from his win at the inaugural season finale in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia last October.

He now heads to Augusta looking to add to his collection of major victories in buoyant mood.

"This was a good test for Augusta – the green speeds are quite fast, quite similar. If I had hit a few putts a bit harder it might have been a bit easier, but I'm just glad to get the win," Koepka said.

Koepka looked to be in control after leading by two shots with three holes to play. But Colombia's Sebastian Munoz chipped in brilliantly for birdie on the 16th to close the gap to one shot with two holes remaining.

Munoz almost stumbled fatally on the 17th after a wild bunker shot flew through the back of the green.

But the South American rolled in a nerveless 10-foot putt after chipping on to the green with his fourth to save par.

Koepka could have all but guaranteed victory on the 17th, but missed the chance to re-establish a two-shot lead when his 10-foot birdie putt rolled just wide.

That left the American defending a one-shot lead as they headed to the 18th and he duly parred to seal his multi-million-dollar payday.

Munoz finished alone in second on 14 under, while 2018 Masters champion Patrick Reed tied for third with South Africa's Dean Burmester on 12 under after a closing 67.

Golf: Brooks Koepka wins second LIV Golf title with win in Orlando

Sam Burns captured the biggest title of his career by winning the WGC Match Play Championship on Sunday, routing Cameron Young 6&5 in an all-American final.

World number 15 Burns took a $3.5 million top prize at Austin Country Club in Texas by making eight birdies in the last 10 holes to dispatch 17th-ranked Young, last year's British Open runner-up.

"What a week. Man, I'm so tired," Burns said. "It was fun playing Cam. I know he didn't have his best stuff."

It was the fifth career PGA title for Burns, who won all seven of his matches to become the first player to capture the WGC Match Play in his debut since Australian Geoff Ogilvy in 2006.

"I just tried to stack one good swing after another," Burns said. "Really have tried to put the hard work in and it's nice to see it paying off on the golf course."

Burns dethroned top-ranked defending champion Scottie Scheffler in 21 holes in morning semi-finals while Young, last year's PGA Rookie of the Year, ousted third-ranked Rory McIlroy in 19 holes.

"Felt like I found something this morning at the end of my match with Scottie and kind of was able to carry that on this afternoon," Burns said.

"It's huge. I haven't played my best golf the past couple months and was really struggling with my swing the past couple weeks."

Young, who chased his first PGA victory, settled for his sixth runner-up showing.

"Frustrating to lose today," Young said. "Out here you have to make a bunch of birdies and I just didn't quite do it."

In the final, Young won the second hole with a five-foot birdie putt but Burns dropped his approach inches from the hole for a birdie to claim the fifth and pull level.

Burns nearly holed out from 45 yards and birdied to win the par-5 sixth then took the par-3 seventh when Young missed a six-foot par putt and captured his fourth consecutive hole with a 20-foot birdie putt at the eighth, seizing a 3-up advantage.

Burns sank a 12-foot birdie putt to win the 10th for a 4-up lead and made a 24-foot birdie putt at the par-3 11th, although Young tied the hole with a 22-foot birdie putt.

Young found water to lose the par-5 12th and fall 5-down then plunked his ball into water shy of the 13th green and moments later surrendered the match.

McIlroy takes third

McIlroy, who will overtake Spain's Jon Rahm to become world number two, led after every hole in defeating top-ranked Scheffler 2&1 in the third-place match to claim bragging rights ahead of the Masters in two weeks at Augusta National.

"It's nice to walk away with a win after the disappointment of this morning not being able to put Cam away," McIlroy said.

"Overall it has been a really good week, something to really build on going into Augusta."

McIlroy can complete a career Grand Slam with a Masters triumph.

"I feel a lot better about things compared to two weeks ago (after missing the cut) at the Players Championship," he said. "All eyes on Augusta and just making sure the game is ready but everything feels in really good order."

Four-time major winner McIlroy, the 2015 WGC Match Play champion from Northern Ireland, and reigning Masters champion Scheffler, who won the Players Championship earlier this month, each stumbled late in the semis.

McIlroy was 2 up with three holes to play but Young birdied to win the par-5 16th, birdied 18 to equalize and birdied the par-5 12th from nine feet to win the match.

Scheffler birdied 18 to force extra holes, missed a four-foot birdie putt for the match at the second extra hole and Burns sank a 14-foot birdie putt at the next to advance.

It's a bit frustrating," Scheffler said. "But I put up a good fight."

Sam Burns captured the biggest title of his career by winning the WGC Match Play Championship on Sunday, routing Cameron Young 6&5 in an all-American final. World number 15 Burns took a $3.

Celine Boutier birdied the first playoff hole to edge Georgia Hall for the LPGA Drive On Championship title on Sunday at Superstition Mountain, Arizona.

Boutier's third LPGA title is the most of any French golfer on the tour, surpassing Patricia Meunier-Lebouc and Anne-Marie Palli.

"It's unbelievable," Boutier said. "I mean, I don't really know how to express it. Anne Marie is here today watching, and so I think it's very special.

"I definitely feel like I was trying not to think about it just because it's so crazy to think that I'm making history in any way."

Boutier had taken a one-stroke lead into the final round and carded a four-under par 68 to join Hall on 20-under 268.

England's Hall had climbed up the leaderboard with a seven-under par 65 that featured an eagle at the par-five 13th and seven birdies.

Hall had launched her day with back-to-back birdies at the first and second and birdied the par-five 18th for a one-shot clubhouse lead.

But Boutier got up and down for birdie at the 18th in regulation to force the playoff, and birdied it again for the win.

Boutier admitted the playoff against her European Solheim Cup teammate was "not enjoyable."

"I just feel like I'm not really confrontational and I really like Georgia," she said. "We were partners, like you said. So I feel like it was definitely a little bit sad that I had to go against her.

"She had a great round today and it was great that she had such a low round and (was) able to go in the playoff."

In the playoff, Boutier was again right of the green with her second shot while Hall's approach found the back bunker.

Boutier chipped to about four feet while Hall fired out of the bunker 20 feet past the hole. After Hall's long birdie attempt missed, Boutier closed out her first playoff victory.

Japan's Ayaka Furue finished alone in third after a 65 for 269.

American Gina Kim notched the LPGA's first hole-in-one of 2023 when she aced the par-three eighth.

"At first I was scared because I was like, 'Oh, crap. It probably hit the pin and went down the hill or something like that,'" said Kim, who finished tied for 66th.

"Then I heard my mom screaming and everyone screaming and then that's when I realized, holy cow."

Golf: Celine Boutier wins LPGA Drive On Championship title

Scottie Scheffler said he has become more comfortable with his game over the past year and is not overthinking things or striving for perfection after the American delivered a dominant victory at the Players Championship on Sunday. Masters champion Scheffler, who said last year he "cried like a baby" before the final round at Augusta National, was a picture of calm at TPC Sawgrass as he collected the PGA Tour's biggest winner's cheque of $4.5 million and regained the world number one ranking with his five-shot victory.

"I'm trying to get a little bit better at a time, not overthink things and fortunately be able to see some good results and enjoy some wins," Scheffler said. The 26-year-old earned his sixth win in the last 13 months ahead of his Masters defence from April 6-9.

"I'm just comfortable with where my game is," he added in a news conference. "I feel like I'm improving. I'm definitely learning more and more, the more you can get into contention and be in the moments ... I guess the experience helps. "I had some times throughout week where I didn't feel like I was swinging my best or playing at 100%, and then I would just kind of wait and pick my moments. "Before Phoenix (in 2022) I had this idea that I had to play perfect on Sundays and hit nothing but good shots, and that's not necessarily how golf is played. "I had some times throughout week where I didn't feel like I was swinging my best or playing at 100%, and then I would just kind of wait and pick my moments. Australian Wade Ormsby won his fourth Asian Tour title following a sudden death playoff against Thai Chonlatit Chuenboonngam in the International Series Thailand final on Sunday.

The Aussie had lagged two shots behind the leaders at the beginning of the day, but under near-perfect conditions in seaside resort Hua Hin carded a seven-under-par 65 to win the $360,000 prize money.

Little-known Chonlatit, 24, had looked set to win, remaining in the lead in the final six holes, carding par at 18, before finishing eight-under-par 64.

The 42-year-old dropped only one shot at the 11th but recovered well with birdies on 12, 13 and 16 racing up the leaderboard before missing a birdie at 15ft on the 18th -- and teeing up a playoff.

The sudden-death playoff at the par under five 18th hole was quickly ended by Ormsby with a clutch birdie putt that took the win, but not before the veteran player had a slight wobble.

"I got a little bit unlucky on the playoff hole to find the bunker, but I holed the 12-footer when it mattered," Ormsby said.

"I had a tough week down in New Zealand last week. I was so annoyed with myself as I knew I was playing well," he said, adding he had put in the work with coach Grant Field.

"I am so stoked," Ormsby said. "I am just so happy I have won an International Series event especially here at Black Mountain, I love the place."

Addressing his family home in Australia, he added: "This one's for you guys."

It is Ormsby's first significant victory since his 2020 win at the Hong Kong Open -- where he returns next week as defending champion.

Chonlatit, who put on one of the best performances of his six-year career, said his priority playing was to keep his card for the Asian tour.

"But this week I'm very happy with my performance so I now would like to win one," he said, adding: "I'm sure I can, and I will try."

Australia's Wade Ormsby wins fourth Asian Tour title with International Series Thailand victory

Tiger Woods's ex-girlfriend has filed a lawsuit seeking to be released from a nondisclosure agreement she says the golf superstar made her sign at the start of their relationship in 2017, court filings showed Wednesday. Erica Herman, who lived with the 15-time major winner at his Florida mansion until late 2022, filed the request in the Circuit Court of the 19th Judicial Circuit in Martin County, Florida.

According to court records seen by AFP, Herman's attorneys are arguing that the NDA she was required to sign is "invalid and unenforceable" under US federal legislation known as the Speak Out Act. The law, which became effective last year in the wake of the MeToo movement, makes nondisclosure agreements unenforceable in cases involving sexual assault and harassment.

Herman's case filings do not go into further details and there are no specific allegations against Woods. But in response to a question on the court filing which reads "Does this case involve allegations of sexual abuse?" Herman's attorneys have checked the box marked "Yes".

Herman's bid to waive her NDA agreement marks an escalation of a legal dispute with Woods which began last October, but which has gone largely unreported in the US media. In court filings also seen by AFP, Herman's lawyers have sued the Jupiter Island Irrevocable Homestead Trust, which is the legal entity that owns Woods's home in Florida. Herman's suit alleges that "agents" for Woods duped her into leaving the mansion last year by telling her to prepare for a vacation.

"By trickery, agents of the defendant (Woods) convinced the plaintiff (Herman) to pack a suitcase for a short vacation and, when she arrived at the airport, they told her she had been locked out of her residence," the court filing said.

Herman's lawyers claim Woods is in violation of an "oral tenancy agreement" allowing her to live in the mansion -- reportedly worth $54 million -- and are suing for damages. The legal dispute threatens to drag Woods' private life into the media spotlight once again, 14 years after the sex scandal which almost destroyed his career and shocked the sporting world.

Woods squeaky clean image imploded in 2009 after revelations of multiple infidelities, leading to his divorce from his first wife Elin Nordegren in 2010. Since that scandal, Woods has slowly rebuilt his career, winning the Masters in 2019 to complete a fairytale comeback after years of injuries and multiple surgeries.

He faced a fresh setback in 2021 when he was involved in a serious rollover crash in California which again imperilled his playing career before making another comeback to major championship golf last year at the Masters.

The golfing icon is not playing at this week's Players Championship in Florida but is on record as stating that he hopes to play in April's Masters in Augusta.

Kurt Kitayama kept his cool in a nerve-shredding final round to clinch the first PGA Tour victory of his much-traveled career at the Arnold Palmer Invitational in Orlando on Sunday.

The 30-year-old journeyman, who led by one at the start of the final round, held off a ferocious challenge from some of the biggest names in world golf to card an even-par 72 and complete a one-shot victory.

Kitayama's hopes of a maiden win appeared to have faded after a disastrous end to the front nine, when he took a triple-bogey seven to relinquish the lead.

But the 46th-ranked California steadied the ship to stay in the hunt down the stretch, reeling off seven straight pars before sinking a 13-foot birdie putt at the 17th to reclaim top spot on the leaderboard on nine under.

Until that point, it looked as if the tournament was destined for a playoff, with big guns Rory McIlroy and Scottie Scheffler both firmly in the hunt for the title.

No fewer than five players shared the lead at one stage with just a few holes remaining.

There was to be no denying victory to Kitayama however, who approached the 18th knowing that a par would be enough to hang on to his slender advantage -- and pocket a winner's cheque of $3.6 million.

His tee shot flew into the thick rough down the left hand side of the fairway on 18, but he blasted a second safely onto the green to leave himself two putts for victory.

He almost sealed it with his first putt, rolling a 47-footer to the very lip of the cup to roars from the packed galleries, before eventually tapping in for par.

Sweet dreams

"It was really hard. I'm going to sleep really well tonight. It's everything I kind of mentally prepared myself for," said Kitayama.

"I've always dreamed of winning on the Tour and to finally do it, it's pretty amazing."

The win was especially sweet for Kitayama, who finished as a runner-up three times in 2022.

Kitayama arrived on the PGA Tour after a challenging start to his career, playing on the developmental Web.com Tour with little success after turning professional in 2015 before moving to the Asian Tour in 2018.

He switched to the European Tour in 2019, where he has two won twice, before finally earning a PGA Tour card in 2021.

For long periods on Sunday it looked as if it was going to be another near-miss for the Californian, as other players began building up a head of steam down the stretch.

But as the tension mounted, player after player squandered opportunities to take the lead as putts refused to drop.

Northern Ireland star McIlroy just missed a birdie putt on the 18th that would have put him on nine under, while Scheffler missed a birdie putt on the 17th that could have put him in the leading pack.

McIlroy carded a two-under-par 70 to close, finishing tied for second on eight under alongside Harris English, who also shot a 70.

McIlroy looked to be ready to sweep to victory after starting the back nine with three birdies in his first four holes to move into the lead, before back-to-back bogeys on the 14th and 15th checked his progress.

McIlroy later revealed he had not been aware he was in the lead after his birdies on the 12th and 13th -- and paid the price for an over-aggressive tee-shot on 14.

"As I was walking to the 14th green, I looked behind me at the scoreboard, and I was leading by one," McIlroy said. "If I had of known that, I wouldn't have tried to play the shot that I played on 14, which was unfortunate."

Although he recovered with a birdie on the 16th, the damage had been done.

Scheffler meanwhile finished in a four-way tie for fourth alongside Jordan Spieth, Patrick Cantlay and England’s Tyrell Hatton on seven under.

Golf: Kurt Kitayama gets maiden PGA Tour win at Arnold Palmer Invitational

Tiger Woods won't compete in next week's Players Championship, making it look likely the 15-time major champion's next event will be the Masters at Augusta National in April.

The PGA Tour announced the field for their flagship event at Ponte Vedra Beach, Florida, on Friday, and Woods -- who won the Players in 2001 and 2013 -- was not on the list.

Woods, still limited by the severe lower right leg injuries he suffered in a February 2021 car accident, last played at the Genesis Invitational at Riviera in February.

He made the cut and finished tied for 45th, acknowledging on Sunday that it "certainly was a little bit more difficult than I probably let on."

Woods had offered no clues to his future schedule at Riviera, apart from saying he hoped to compete in all four majors, and perhaps "a couple" of other events.

"Like I told you guys last year, I'm not going to play any more than probably the majors and maybe a couple more," Woods said. "That's it, that's all my body will allow me to do. My back the way it is, all the surgeries I had on my back, my leg the way it is, I just can't. That's just going to be my future."

Riviera marked Woods's first tour level event since he missed the cut at the Open Championship in July. He had skipped the US Open to be ready for St. Andrews.

He had made a stunning return to competition at the Masters last year to finish tied for 47th, but he withdrew from the PGA Championship after the third round.

Golf: Tiger Woods not to take part in Players Championship

World number one Jon Rahm says the continuous tussle for the top ranking among himself, Rory McIlroy and Scottie Scheffler "speaks to the greatness of the game of golf right now."

Spain's Rahm returned to the top of the rankings with his victory at Riviera two weeks ago, his third US PGA Tour title of 2023 carrying him past reigning Masters champion Scheffler.

Scheffler had regained the summit just a week earlier, replacing McIlroy atop the rankings after his victory at the Phoenix Open.

Both second-ranked Scheffler and No. 3 McIlroy have a chance to return to number one this week at the Arnold Palmer Invitational in Orlando, Florida, where Rahm said on Tuesday that the tight race at the top was a testament to the current state of the game.

"I do know this is the most amount of No. 1 changes in this short period of time," Rahm said. "I saw some of those stats, because it's just really interesting, which speaks to the greatness of the game of golf right now -- how good everybody's been playing," Rahm said.

Rahm himself has been in dominant form. His victory in the Genesis Invitational at Riviera was his fifth win in nine worldwide starts, a run that included his third Spanish Open triumph in October and victory in the DP World Tour Championship in November.

He opened 2023 with US Tour wins in the Tournament of Champions in Hawaii and the American Express in La Quinta, California.

After closing out a two-shot victory over Max Homa to return to the top of the rankings for the first time since March of 2022, Rahm said he didn't "need a ranking to validate anything."

But he acknowledged on Tuesday there was "a lot of satisfaction that comes when you get to be No. 1 when the other players have been playing great golf as well.

"Scottie had a great year last year, Rory had a great year last year, and then towards the end of the year I kind of picked up."

Rahm was also pleased to get back to the top with a victory.

"I think one of those times that I got to it, it was after, I think it was (Justin Thomas) had a bad finish, and I finished 10th in a tournament and you get back to number one.

"That doesn't feel nearly as well."

Rahm, who headlines a field that features 43 of the top 50 players in the world, is making just his second start at Bay Hill, where he finished tied for 17th last year with what he called a "horrible, horrible week on the greens".

"Four three-putts alone on the back nine on Sunday," Rahm recalled. "So very encouraged knowing that if I could keep my ball striking the level that I know I can and have a decent week on the greens, I'll have a chance."

Scheffler is the defending champion. He clawed out a one-stroke victory in brutal fourth-round conditions, his second win in three starts after he had claimed his first career title in Phoenix just weeks before.

He opened 2023 with US Tour wins in the Tournament of Champions in Hawaii and the American Express in La Quinta, California. After closing out a two-shot victory over Max Homa to return to the top of the rankings for the first time since March of 2022, Rahm said he didn't "need a ranking to validate anything." But he acknowledged on Tuesday there was "a lot of satisfaction that comes when you get to be No. 1 when the other players have been playing great golf as well. "Scottie had a great year last year, Rory had a great year last year, and then towards the end of the year I kind of picked up." Rahm was also pleased to get back to the top with a victory. "I think one of those times that I got to it, it was after, I think it was (Justin Thomas) had a bad finish, and I finished 10th in a tournament and you get back to number one. "That doesn't feel nearly as well." Rahm, who headlines a field that features 43 of the top 50 players in the world, is making just his second start at Bay Hill, where he finished tied for 17th last year with what he called a "horrible, horrible week on the greens". "Four three-putts alone on the back nine on Sunday," Rahm recalled. "So very encouraged knowing that if I could keep my ball striking the level that I know I can and have a decent week on the greens, I'll have a chance." Scheffler is the defending champion. He clawed out a one-stroke victory in brutal fourth-round conditions, his second win in three starts after he had claimed his first career title in Phoenix just weeks before. Golf: John Rahm says tussle for top place is 'really interesting'

Lydia Ko said Tuesday she cannot afford to become "too cocky" even though she is world number one and among the favourites at this week's Women's World Championship in Singapore. The 25-year-old New Zealander, who got married in December, enjoyed a blissful start to the year when she won in Saudi Arabia a fortnight ago.

But while she has been in red-hot form and is the reigning LPGA player of the year, the Women's World Championship has so far eluded her.

"You can never get too cocky about what ranked player you are because it's so tight at the top," Ko said ahead of the tournament, which starts on Thursday at Sentosa Golf Club.

"Everyone is playing really well and you can't say, 'I'm going to be there forever,'" said the Kiwi, who finished tied sixth last week in Thailand.

"When I was younger, I felt like being number one meant that I had to be winning or contending week in, week out, but that's not necessarily true," she added.

"Everybody is going to have their ups and downs but you have to manage that by making sure those lows aren't super-low and you don't get too high from the highs."

Ko's best result in Singapore came in the 2015 edition where she finished second, and knows acing her short game will be the formula to success this week.

"Putting well is obviously going to be important here, especially when you have those birdie opportunities or when you need to make those ups-and-downs," she said.

"So having to put together four rounds where there's going to be a little bit more consistency in putting is going to be a big key for me," she said.

Like Ko, Brooke Henderson has also got her campaign off to a winning start, triumphing at the LPGA's season-opening event in Orlando, Florida.

The Canadian has now captured at least one title in eight of her nine seasons on the LPGA and is looking forward to continuing that winning run in Singapore.

"It was a dream start. I'm trying to make small improvements all the time and trying to get a little bit better," said the 25-year-old.

Also among the contenders will be South Korea's Ko Jin-young.

She hopes her mental training will pay off as she seeks to become the first player to successfully defend her title at the tournament.

"I know there's going to be pressure but I don't want to think too much about it," she said.

"I just need to meditate as that has worked well for me in the past and has allowed me to focus more on my swing and golf shots."

Golf: Lydia Ko not taking Women's World Championship lightly

Chris Kirk birdied the first playoff hole to beat Eric Cole at the Honda Classic on Sunday, ending a near eight-year title drought with his fifth US PGA Tour triumph. It was an emotional win for the 37-year-old American, whose last victory at Colonial in 2015 was followed by time away from the game in 2019 to deal with depression and alcohol misuse.

He took a two-shot lead into the final round and carded a one-under-par 69, shaking off a bogey at the 72nd hole with a birdie when they returned again to 18 for the first hole of the playoff.

There Kirk spun his approach within a foot of the pin while Cole was in a greenside bunker and missed a 10-foot birdie attempt to extend the playoff.

"I just have so much to be thankful for," Kirk said. "I'm so grateful. I'm so grateful for my sobriety. I'm so grateful for my family. I'm so grateful for everyone that's supported me throughout the past three or four years especially."

Cole, who is a US tour rookie this season at the age of 34 -- and with 56 professional wins behind him on the Minor League Golf Tour mini-tour -- carded a final-round 67 on the par-70 PGA National course in Palm Beach Gardens, Florida, where he joined Kirk in finishing with a 72-hole total of 14-under par 266.

He and Kirk dueled all day and finished two strokes in front of third-placed Tyler Duncan, who carded a 66 for 268.

Kirk got off to a quick start, rolling in a 17-foot birdie putt at the opening hole.

After a bogey at the second he got up and down for birdie from a greenside bunker at the third and rolled in a 34-foot birdie at the eighth to take a two-shot lead.

Cole had kept in touch with birdies at the third, fourth and fifth -- where he snaked in a 70-foot putt.

He was in the water for a bogey at the sixth, but after a birdie at 11 pulled him back within one stroke he grabbed the outright lead at the 13th as he rapped in a seven-foot birdie putt while Kirk bogeyed.

Cole gave back a stroke with a bogey at 15, where he needed two shots to get out of a greenside bunker, and Kirk regained the solo lead with a 19-foot birdie at the 16th.

Cole hangs tough

Kirk couldn't close it out at 18, however, as his second shot from the fairway found the water and he was unable to convert a 16-foot par-saving putt.

"I was obviously very, very nervous today having not won in so long," Kirk said.

"Coming down the stretch, I felt good. Obviously that putt on 16 was huge and was in a great position on 18, just made a bad swing at the wrong time."

Cole, who is the son of former PGA Tour player Bobby Cole and former LPGA player Laura Baugh, called it a "great week overall."

"I felt like I hung pretty tough, and I was really proud of that," he said.

Golf: Chris Kirk beats Eric Cole in playoff to win Honda Classic

Reigning British Open champion Cameron Smith and two-time major winner Dustin Johnson are among the big names as the controversial Saudi-backed LIV Golf League opens its 2023 campaign on Friday. The series of 54-hole events offering record purses of $25 million expands to 14 stops in seven nations, starting at Mexico's Mayakoba resort. Several big names were lured to LIV Golf from the US PGA Tour, prompting a PGA ban that set up a court fight scheduled to begin in January 2024.

Top-ranked Jon Rahm, Rory McIlroy, Tiger Woods, and Masters Champion, Scottie Scheffler were among those who stayed with the PGA as a split in the sport brought chaos, but so far LIV players remain able to play in majors if they qualify.

LIV Golf continues to fight to earn world ranking points, but with new players making the jump the 2023 season could see top talent from LIV and older tours meeting only at the four majors, adding to the tension around April's Masters showdown at Augusta National.

Johnson won last year's individual LIV Golf crown after taking a title in Boston with an eagle on the first playoff hole and led an all-American 4Aces squad to the team title. Australia's Smith, the 2022 PGA Player of the Year, won his first major title at St. Andrews but made the jump to LIV Golf after the US PGA's Tour Championship.

Smith captured the Chicago title in September in his second LIV start and in November claimed his third Australian PGA Championship triumph as LIV players remain eligible for DP World Tour events amid an ongoing court battle.

Critics brand LIV Golf as a bid by Saudi Arabia, which backs the circuit via its Public Investment Fund, to "sportswash" its human rights record.

But LIV Golf commissioner Greg Norman sees the league carrying the sport to a younger audience with fast-paced shotgun starts, on-site concerts, and increased interaction between stars and fans.

"In less than a year, LIV Golf has reinvigorated the professional game and laid the foundation for the sport's future," Norman said. "Our league format has already begun to build connections with new audiences around the globe. Major champions, current and future Hall of Famers, and up-and-coming stars are all committed to creating this new platform for world-class competition as the sport evolves for the next generation."

Qualifying LIV Golf members will be allowed to compete in the 151st edition of The Open this summer at Royal Liverpool, the R&A announced on Tuesday. Some of the more notable LIV golfers exempt into the July 20-23 tournament include past Open champions Phil Mickelson, Henrik Stenson of Sweden, Louis Oosthuizen of South Africa and reigning winner Cameron Smith of Australia. Also available to participate are Dustin Johnson and Bryson DeChambeau -- who finished in the top at 10 at St. Andrews last year -- as well as former major winners Brooks Koepka and Patrick Reed, among others.

"We have created an exciting schedule of events which takes in many regions around the world and provides the chance for golfers to earn a place in the Open at Royal Liverpool," said Johnnie Cole-Hamilton, executive director of champions at the R&A. "We are grateful to our colleagues at the professional tours for their support and look forward to seeing who emerges from each event to book a sought-after place in the Championship this year."

Tuesday's news is on par with what R&A chief Martin Slumbers said in July. He said that banning LIV players was "not on our agenda." He doubled down on that message in October. "We'll go public in January/February with what we are going to do with regard to LIV golfers," Slumbers told Golf Digest. "But if you want a guide, go back to what I said in July. We're not banning anyone. We are not going to betray 150 years of history and have the Open not be open. The name says it all. And that's important. What we will do is ensure that there are appropriate pathways and ways to qualify. "I'm looking forward to seeing Cam Smith tee-up around 9:40 a.m. on the first day of the Open next year. The Open needs to set itself aside from what's going in terms of disagreements and make sure we stay true to our principle, which is to have the best players in the world competing."

Golf: 'LIV Tour has created hype', says ace Indian golfer Shubhankar Sharma ahead of Hero Indian Open

The Hero Indian Open begins on Thursday. It is India's premier Golf tournament and is sanctioned by the European Tour which is currently fighting a pitched battle with Liv Golf. Shubhankar Sharma is the highest-ranked Indian in the field and is expected to challenge for the trophy come Sunday. Sharma will play at the British Open in July and he opened up about his return to the hallowed stage in a conversation with Sports Editor Digvijay Singh Deo. He also believes that LIV Golf has hyped up the sport.

HERO Indian Open: India's Premier golf tournament returns

India's only European Tour Golf event is back after a three-year break. The Hero Indian Open features some of Indian Golf's top names including Shubhankar Sharma and two-time winner SSP Chawrasia and also boasts of an impressive overseas contingent. 2018 Ryder Cup winner Thorbjorn Olesen has touched down in New Delhi days after winning the Thailand Classic which puts him in contention for a berth on the European Ryder Cup team for the 2023 edition in Rome. Olesen spoke to Sports Editor Digvijay Singh Deo.

India's Premier Golf Tournament returns

Jon Rahm returned to the top of the world rankings with his third win of the year at the Genesis Invitational on Sunday, prevailing in a tense final-round battle with Max Homa to claim a dramatic victory in Pacific Palisades, California. Spaniard Rahm, 28, made two late birdies to close with a two-under 69 for a two-shot win over home favourite Homa, finishing at 17-under for his 10th PGA Tour title and a fifth win in his last nine tournaments worldwide. Homa, who won the 2021 title, shot a three-under 68 for a 15-under par total of 269, one stroke ahead of Patrick Cantlay. Rahm's latest success was enough to overtake Scottie Scheffler, who was nine shots adrift, at the top of the rankings, only a week after the Masters champion had overtaken Rory McIlroy by defending his Phoenix Open title.

"I don't need a ranking to validate anything," said Rahm, who was last ranked at number one in March 2022. "I'm having the best season of my life, and hopefully I can keep it going. "That was a tough week and a tough Sunday. To reach a milestone of double-digit wins is pretty incredible, and to do it at a golf course with this legacy, this history and hosted by the man himself, Tiger Woods, is a true honour."

Woods, 47, was in the spotlight as he returned to competition for the first time since last July's British Open and carded a final-round two-over-par 73 to finish on one under. The 15-times major champion finished a 72-hole event for the first time since the Masters last April.

"My streak continues here," said Woods, who has played at the Riviera course 12 times without winning. "It's progress, it's headed in the right direction. It was certainly a little bit more difficult than I probably let on."

Tiger Woods said he was trying to stay calm throughout his first round at the Genesis Invitational on Thursday, where he posted a two-under-par 69 in his first non-major PGA Tour event since October 2020. Woods has competed on a limited basis since a 2021 car crash almost cost him a leg, featuring in the field for the Masters, PGA Championship and the Open last year.

He competed in the PNC Championship with his son, Charlie, in December despite developing plantar fasciitis earlier in the month. "Misses, angles, wind - these are all things that have come second nature to a lot of these guys - I haven't really done this in a while," said the 15-times major winner on Thursday. Woods, who made his PGA Tour debut at the Riviera Country Club some three decades ago, closed out his round with three straight birdies, much to the delight of the packed galleries as fans clutched cell phones straining to catch a snapshot.

"I didn't really look up as much. I probably should have," he later told reporters. "I was trying to calm myself down all day, trying to figure out what the hell I'm doing out here because I haven't played." Woods, playing alongside Rory McIlroy (67) and Justin Thomas (68), chipped into a bunker on 10, leading to one of three bogeys on the day. But he whipped the crowd into a frenzy as he drained a more-than 23-foot putt on 17 and finished five shots shy of clubhouse leaders Max Homa and Keith Mitchell (both 64).

"I probably should have appreciated the fans more than I did, but there was so much going on in my head trying to get the ball in the correct spots and the correct feels just because I haven't done this in a while," said Woods.

The tournament was suspended due to darkness with the handful of players who had not completed the first round set to resume on Friday at 7:45 a.m. (1545 GMT).

Scottie Scheffler knocked Rory McIlroy off the top of the world rankings on Sunday after the Masters champion retained his Phoenix Open title in Arizona. Scheffler carded a final round of six-under-par 65 for a 19 under total to claim his fifth PGA Tour title and regain the number one ranking he had held for 30 weeks until October. Canada's Nick Taylor also carded a final round of 65 to finish two strokes adrift. "It feels pretty good," Scheffler, 26, said. "I'm just proud of how I fought. I didn't have my best stuff, but I grinded it out. "Bad shots are going to come. You're not going to play 72 holes of perfect golf. A lot of it is how you respond."

Scheffler, who took the $3.6 million top prize, won his first PGA Tour title in Phoenix to kick off a run of four wins in six starts. The American won his first major at Augusta National last April and was voted PGA Tour Player of the Year.

Tiger Woods said on Friday he will play in next week's PGA Tour event in Los Angeles, marking his return to competitive golf after a seven-month absence as he recovers from injuries sustained in a 2021 car crash. The former world number one, whose appearances have been limited in the past two years since the 2021 car accident that left him with severe leg injuries, last played at the British Open in July. Writing on Twitter on Friday, Woods said he plans to play at the February 16-19 Genesis Invitational tournament at Riviera Country Club which he hosts and benefits his charitable foundation.

"I'm ready to play an ACTUAL PGA Tour event next week @thegenesisinv," Woods tweeted.

The 47-year-old -- who won the last of his 15 major championships at the 2019 Masters -- had hoped to make his PGA Tour return at the Hero World Challenge in the Bahamas last December. He abandoned those plans after developing plantar fasciitis in his right foot, leaving him struggling to walk.

"After consulting with my doctors and trainers, I have decided to withdraw this week and focus on my hosting duties," Woods said at the time.

He did play in The Match, a 12-hole exhibition event in December as well as the PNC Championship, a low-key event alongside his son Charlie.

In November, Woods indicated that he expects to play just a handful of events outside of major championships in future.

"The goal is to play just the major championships and maybe one or two more. That's it," Woods said at the time. "I mean, that's physically, that's all I can do."

Woods was left hospitalized for weeks and unable to walk for months, with his right leg repaired with rods, plates and screws following his scary February 2021 rollover crash in California.

Woods said during the British Open last year he had feared not being able to walk again following his car accident.

"For the most part of my rehab I was just hoping that I could walk again, you know, walk normal and have a normal life and maybe play a little hit-and-giggle golf with my son or my friends at home," Woods said.

The Saudi-backed LIV Golf tour announced its first broadcast deal in the United States on Thursday, penning a 'multi-year' agreement with The CW Network, the tour said in a statement.

LIV's debut season in 2022 did not have a broadcast partner in the US with tournaments only being shown on their own website and YouTube channel.

While the deal is not with one of the top networks for live sport in the US, securing a television deal in the States was one of the prime goals for the tour which has signed up several top players but has faced criticism from human rights campaigners and legal battles with the PGA Tour.

"This is a momentous day for LIV Golf as this partnership is about more than just media rights. The CW will provide accessibility for our fans and maximum exposure for our athletes and partners as their reach includes more than 120 million households across the United States,” said LIV CEO Greg Norman.

"We’re very proud to note how consequential it is that a league that has only existed for one year has secured a full broadcast deal in its debut full league season."

The CW is 75 per cent owned by Nexstar Media Group, which owns a host of local channels across the United States, but the channel is not known for showing live sports.

"For The CW, our partnership with LIV Golf marks a significant milestone in our goal to re-engineer the network with quality, diversified programming for our viewers, advertisers and CW affiliates. This also marks the first time in The CW's 17-year history that the network is the exclusive broadcast home for live mainstream sports," said Dennis Miller, President, The CW Network.

Under the deal, Saturday and Sunday action will be broadcast live on television and The CW App with the Friday opening round only on the app.

Unlike the established PGA Tour's tournaments, which are four-day 72-hole competitions, LIV plays over three days and 54 holes with a shotgun start.

Jon Rahm believes he is currently the "best player in the world" after a red-hot streak of three tournament wins in five starts, and has questioned the methodology of calculating the golf rankings where he remains number five in the world. The former U.S. Open champion won the Sentry Tournament of Champions in Hawaii over the weekend with a comeback for the ages when he overhauled Collin Morikawa's seven-shot lead in the final round. Having also won the Spanish Open and DP World Tour Championship, former number one Rahm was hoping to at least move past Patrick Cantlay into fourth spot but still finds himself in fifth place.

"Since the playoffs ... I've won three times and I don't even get close to him. So I'm trying to understand what's going on," Rahm said. "Had they not changed the world ranking points (system) I would have been pretty damn close (to world number one) right now. But in my mind, I feel like since August I've been the best player in the world. "Earlier in the year clearly Scottie (Scheffler) was that player, then Rory (McIlroy) was that player, and I feel like right now it's been me. Anybody, any given year can get a hot three, four months and get to that spot."

Former Ryder Cup player and five-times European Tour winner Barry Lane has died at the age of 62, the DP World Tour said in a statement on Sunday. Lane made 693 starts on the European Tour, which is now known as the DP World Tour, and is fourth on the Tour's all-time appearance list.
