Kathy Whitworth, whose 88 LPGA Tour victories are the most ever by a player on a pro tour, passed away suddenly on Saturday while celebrating Christmas Eve with family and friends, her longtime partner Bettye Odle said. She was 83.

"It is with a heart full of love that we let everyone know of the passing of the winningest golf professional ever, Kathy Whitworth," Odle said in a statement on Sunday. "Kathy left this world the way she lived her life, loving, laughing and creating memories." The cause of death and location were not disclosed.

Raised in Jal, New Mexico, Whitworth first began playing golf at the age of 15 with her grandfather's clubs and after winning titles as an amateur and attending Odessa College in Texas, turned pro at 19 and joined the LPGA Tour. "I was really fortunate in that I knew what I wanted to do," Whitworth said in a remembrance published on the LPGA Tour's website. "Golf just grabbed me by the throat. I can't tell you how much I loved it. I used to think everyone knew what they wanted to do when they were 15 years old."

Her mother and father supported her amid a sluggish start to her pro career and she won the first of her 88 LPGA Tour titles at the Kelly Girls Open in 1962. "I'm glad when I look back on it that I didn't succeed right away," Whitworth said. "When it happened, I was ready."

She went on to claim six major championships, was named LPGA Tour's Player of the Year seven times and became the first LPGA player to pass $1 million in career earnings. She claimed her final title at the United Virginia Bank Classic in 1985. "Winning never got old," Whitworth said.

Her career included a rivalry with fellow late World Golf Hall of Famer Mickey Wright, who is second behind Whitworth in LPGA Tour wins with 82. Tiger Woods and Sam Snead are tied for the most wins on the PGA Tour with 82.

Her contemporaries said Whitworth's fiercely competitive nature is what set her apart. "She just had to win," Betsy Rawls, another one of Whitworth's rivals, said on the LPGA website. "A lot like Mickey Wright and Louise Suggs. There's just something that drives them. Kathy was a very intelligent person. It was unacceptable for her to make a mistake. "She hated herself when she made a mistake. She was wonderful to play with — sweet as she could be, nice to everybody — but oh, man, she berated herself something awful. And that's what drove her."

LPGA Commissioner Mollie Marcoux Samaan praised Whitworth's impact both on and off the course. "She inspired me as a young girl and now as the commissioner and I know she did the same for so many others," Samaan said on the LPGA website. "We all mourn with Bettye, her family and the entire golf world."

Players on the LIV Golf circuit have been allowed to compete at the 2023 Augusta Masters. LIV Golfers are currently banned from competing in events on the PGA tour.

Players on LIV Golf circuit allowed to compete at 2023 Augusta Masters

Augusta National Golf Club will invite players eligible under their current criteria to participate in the 2023 Masters Tournament, the organisers said on Tuesday. That means PGA Tour players suspended indefinitely by the U.S.-based circuit for joining the LIV Golf Series would be eligible to play in the tournament.

LIV has lured away some of the sport's biggest names with huge purses, while those who joined are no longer eligible to play in PGA Tour events. "Regrettably, recent actions have divided men's professional golf by diminishing the virtues of the game and the meaningful legacies of those who built it," Chairman Fred Ridley said. "Although we are disappointed in these developments, our focus is to honor the tradition of bringing together a preeminent field of golfers this coming April.

Tiger Woods said that while his golf swing is in great shape, his injured right foot needs time to heal and that he looked forward to using a cart when he tees it up at The Match on Saturday. The 15-time major champion withdrew ahead of last weekend's Hero World Challenge after developing plantar fasciitis, tissue inflation that causes pain in the heel. "I can hit golf balls, it's just hard to get from point A to point B, so [the cart] will certainly help a lot," Woods told reporters on a call promoting the event on Wednesday. "I've got to get this plantar to heal and that just takes time. It's not something that happens overnight. It's going to take a lot of rest and healing and unfortunately, treatment. "It's a tough road."

Woods suffered significant injuries to his right leg and foot during a February 2021 car crash near Los Angeles but returned to tee it up at this year's Masters, PGA Championship and the British Open. While it remains to be seen how much PGA Tour golf Woods will play next year, he noted during the call that golf lends itself to long careers. "Arnold Palmer played in 50 straight Masters. You can't do that in any other sport," said Woods, who turns 47 later this month. "Our sport is measured in decades, not just years, decades."

Woods and world number one Rory McIlroy will battle major champions Jordan Spieth and Justin Thomas in the seventh iteration of The Match, a made-for-TV 12-hole exhibition event that will be played under the lights and air in the primetime slot in Florida on Saturday. Spieth marvelled at the opportunity to take on two icons of the sport. "If you told myself and JT in 2012 in college that we would be playing against these two in a match, that would be a really, really cool thing," he said. "We want to win it because of how much these two inspired us. It's a unique and really cool opportunity for us to try to take down a couple of the greats, a couple of the greatest that ever played."

Tiger Woods reveals 'tough road' ahead in recovery from foot injury

After it was discovered that she had exploited her position to avoid receiving a fine for operating her golf cart on the street, the police chief of Tampa, Florida, resigned. A Pinellas County sheriff's officer stopped Mary O'Connor and her husband last month close to the gated neighbourhood where they reside, as seen on body-cam footage.

"I'm hoping you'll let us go tonight," she told the deputy as she introduced herself and flashed her badge and ID. The event on November 12 in a neighbourhood outside of Tampa, Florida's third-largest city, is captured on video that was made public last week.

O'Connor and her husband were stopped for operating an unregistered car on the street, and the deputy can be seen stating in the video. In addition to not often driving her automobile on public roadways, O'Connor says that she is "going to pick up food."

She then inquires about the deputy's body camera. She responds, "I'm the police chief in Tampa," when he confirms that the camera is on. They have "a lot of difficulties with golf carts around here," the officer is heard telling the woman. Before being let go without a ticket, she can be seen giving him her business card. "Ever need anything, call me," she says.

On Monday, the mayor of Tampa said that the police chief had broken the law. According to a statement issued by the mayor's office, "Tampa Mayor Jane Castor has sought and accepted the resignation of Police Chief Mary O'Connor."

The mayor also claimed that O'Connor had broken the rules on "standard of behaviour" and "abuse of position or identification." O'Connor expressed regret and acknowledged that "this situation may be regarded as improper, but that was definitely not my intent."

The police chief is expected to set an excellent example and uphold "high standards for ethical and professional behaviour," according to a statement made by Mayor Castor on Monday.

She stated that it was "inappropriate for any public employee, especially the city's top law enforcement head, to beg for preferential treatment because of their position," adding that "that definitely did not happen in this case."

Following 22 years in the city's police department, O'Connor was sworn into office in March. After being detained for assaulting deputies during a traffic check in 1995, she lost her job as an officer and was rehired the following year.

With the start of the Hero World Challenge, on Thursday (December 01), at Albany Golf course in the Bahamas, 20 players who are ranked among top-35 will be seen participating. Meanwhile, 15-time Major champion Tiger Woods withdrew his name from the competition citing a foot injury. Since the fight for the title and even world rankings are on offer, this tournament promise to deliver the hype. In an exclusive chat with WION’s Sports Editor, Digvijay Singh Deo, the defending champion Norway’s Viktor Hovland talked about the rise of youngsters on the PGA scene, how has 2022 been for him, what keeps him hooked to this game and beyond.

I improved a lot this year – Viktor

Viktor Hovland won the Hero World Challenge the last time and also claimed his second DP World Tour title in Dubai this year over Richie Bland and Rory McIlroy. Such wins not only put him in the right spotlight but also in contention to be among the best around. During the interview, when asked how 2022 fared for him, the Norwegian said, “It (2022) has been interesting, started off with a win in Dubai (DP World Tour Title), which was an awesome win. I also won here 12 months ago, something that was interesting too. Now since then, I have started to put myself in contention a lot, there are a lot of good memories from this year. I have also improved a lot this year.”

The current world number 12 was further asked about his thoughts on what Tiger Woods recently said on the rise of youngsters on the PGA scene. Seemingly impressed, Viktor said, “With every young guy that's winning and doing well that's proving to the guy younger than him that this is possible, now that's like everyone is just pushing each other. There's so much information out there from which you can learn, and with that, you can grow at an exceptional rate in comparison to before, and that's why you see a lot of young guys out there.”

Tough year for the sport, but I plan to get better – Viktor

Viktor Hovland was open to talking about the year 2022, where the sport had some ups and downs. He was of the opinion that despite a tough year overall, there are still a lot of things that hook him up with golf. He said, “I just want to see how good I can become, my goals are always to get better at golf and that's what drives me. Obviously, money and other things are nice, but I want to see how good I can become.”

Besides playing golf and rubbing shoulders have some of this sport’s greatest ever, Viktor is also believed to be following what stars from his country are up to. Although he was honest in accepting that it’s hard not to see what others are doing, with his busy schedule he cannot keep a tab of everything.

“We follow the region media and try and follow up upon what's happening with other stars from the country, it's hard not to see what others including Erling are doing. I don't get to go back much or meet them but I am still supporting them on the sidelines. It's cool for a winter nation to do well in summer sports," he concluded.

Ahead of this week's Hero Cup Challenge, Tiger Woods announced his withdrawal from the competition citing a foot injury, that is "making it difficult to walk." His pulling out from the charity tournament, in the Bahamas, has left organisers in a tough spot as the veteran golfer hadn't been seen in action after appearing at St Andrew's for The Open Championship early this year.

During an exclusive interaction with WION's Sports Editor Digvijay Singh Deo, Woods said that he "wanted to play the hero world challenge but pushed myself too hard".

The legendary golfer said, "Was playing using a cart and the scores were good but the moment I started to walk the golf course the problems started. Frustrating, as my game was good enough to compete against the guys but my body isn't ready right now."

Woods further added, "The onus is now on the majors to set their qualifying criteria. We want the best players in golf to play against each other but at the moment we can't identify that. The world rankings system is flawed and at the moment there are many moving pieces." "We will come to a resolution some way or another and hopefully it is a positive one for all parties involved," the veteran concluded.

Earlier, on Tuesday (November 29), Woods didn't mince his words while talking about LIV CEO Greg Norman during a press conference ahead of the Hero World Challenge.

“As Rory said, I think Greg’s got to leave and then we can eventually, hopefully, have a stay between the two lawsuits and figure something out. But why would you change anything if you’ve got a lawsuit against you? They sued us first. I see that there’s an opportunity out there if both organisations put a stay on their litigation but that’s the problem, they’ve got to put a stay on it."

“I think it has to start with leadership on their side. Understanding that what is happening right now is not the best fit or future for the whole game of golf. Now, what is the best way for our game to grow? It’s not this way. You need to have the two bodies come together. If one side has so much animosity, someone trying to destroy our tour, then how do you work with that?", Woods pointed out.

While the LIV Golf-PGA Tour tussle is far from over, looks like it has also severely hit the equation between Woods and Norman. At present, the former remains firm on his stance that both LIV Golf and PGA Tour cannot exist simultaneously.

I see that there’s an opportunity out there if both organisations put a stay on their litigation but that’s the problem, they’ve got to put a stay on it." “I think it has to start with leadership on their side. WATCH WION LIVE HERE You can now write for wionews.com and be a part of the community. Exclusive | LIV Golf-PGA tour issue was not handled well, says Tiger Woods

2022 will be remembered for the start of a civil war in golf. The inaugural season of the Saudi-backed LIV series triggered a battle for the sport, with the PGA tour banning all players who competed on the rebel circuit. WION Sports Editor Digvijay Singh Deo discussed the unprecedented season with Senior Golf Writers Joy Chakravarthy and Martin Dempster, while also looking at the road ahead for all parties involved.

WION Sports | 2022: An unprecedented year in Golf

Tiger Woods has withdrawn from the Hero World Challenge in the Bahamas due to a heel injury. The 15-time Major winner has not played competitive golf since July. In an exclusive chat with Wion Sports Editor Digvijay Singh Deo , Martin Dempster, Chairman of the Golf Writers Association, believes the withdrawal serves as a reminder that Wood is 'fragile' these days.

A dawn scramble to find his clubs had Adam Scott at "panic stations" ahead of his early tee time for the opening round of the Australian PGA Championship but the former world number one shook off the drama to make a bright start at Royal Queensland.

The search for the clubs, eventually found in Scott's manager's room, was a minor hiccup in the Australian's reunion with former caddie Steve Williams on Thursday.

Things otherwise proceeded smoothly for the pair as Scott shot a 66 for the early clubhouse lead before finishing the day in a group tied for fourth at five-under, a stroke behind local co-leaders Min Woo Lee, Jason Scrivener and John Lyras

"It was panic stations ... Steve was kicking doors down," Scott joked of the frantic search for his bag.

Despite the 6 a.m. tee time, a big crowd had already assembled at the 10th hole at Royal Queensland where 2013 Masters winner Scott started his round.

Most were there to see his playing partner Cameron Smith, however, on the British Open champion's long-awaited return to his home state Queensland.

After a busy lead-up of fan, media and sponsor engagements, headline act Smith started slowly but finished with three birdies in his last four holes to card a 68 and lie three shots behind the leaders.

A tired Smith said his brain was a little "foggy" as he made the turn without a birdie and he hoped home fans would not expect him to win the A$2 million ($1.35 million) event co-sanctioned by Europe's DP World Tour.

Tiger Woods has won the PGA Tour's Player Impact Program (PIP) for a second consecutive year and with it the $15 million bonus given to the winner, according to results obtained by Reuters on Tuesday. Woods has played only nine rounds of golf across three majors in 2022 but remains the game's top draw as defined by the PIP, which measures a player's popularity based on five criteria like media mentions and broadcast exposure. World number one Rory McIlroy was rewarded with $12 million as the runner-up while Jordan Spieth ($9 million), Justin Thomas ($7.5 million) and Jon Rahm ($6 million) rounded out the top five, according to the memo sent to players.

Woods finished first in four of the five PIP categories, the only exception coming in "TV Sponsor Exposure" which measures the amount of time a player's sponsor logos appear on the screen during weekend PGA Tour telecasts. Woods only played three-weekend rounds this year, two at the Masters and one at the PGA Championship. The PIP was implemented in 2021 as a way to reward members who, through a series of metrics, are shown to drive the most positive interest in the PGA Tour. The program was expanded this year to include the top 20 players and $100 in total payouts, up from 10 players and $40 million last year.

Masters champion Scottie Scheffler ($5.5 million) was sixth on the list while the next four players -- Xander Schauffele, U.S. Open winner Matt Fitzpatrick, Will Zalatoris and Tony Finau each earned $5 million. Collin Morikawa, Shane Lowry, Kevin Kisner, Max Homa and Billy Horschel were 11th-15th, respectively, and each earned $3 million. Rickie Fowler, Adam Scott, Jason Day, Patrick Cantlay and Viktor Hovland rounded out the top 20 and will each get $2 million. Hideki Matsuyama, Cameron Young and Sam Burns -- who would have qualified under the slightly-modified criteria being used for 2023 -- were added to the list and will each get $2 million.

Jon Rahm won the DP World Tour Championship in Dubai by two shots on Sunday as Rory McIlroy finished fourth to end the season as European number one for the fourth time. Spaniard Rahm fired a closing 67 to finish on 20 under and seal a career hat-trick at Jumeirah Golf Estates. England's Tyrrell Hatton and Sweden's Alex Noren shared second place after carding final rounds of 66 and 67 respectively with McIlroy ending at 16 under after a closing 68.

Rahm reeled off three birdies before bogeying the fourth and came back with three more to stay ahead before making par at the 18th. "I like this course and this course likes me. I hope this is the third of many more," he said. McIlroy secured the Harry Vardon Trophy for the winner of the Race to Dubai to crown the European tour's number-one player. "It means a lot," said the Northern Irishman, a four-times Major champion who last earned that title in 2015 and was already world number one. "I was a model of consistency the whole way through the year...just a really consistent season, I kept putting in good performances.

In a $4 billion golf and real estate development project in neighbouring Oman, a Saudi real estate company has partnered with the Trump Organization, according to a stock market filing released on Sunday.

The Dar Al Arkan Global Company deal, which involves a division of the Dar Al Arkan Real Estate Development Company, comes at a time of increased hostilities between the Saudi government and the US administration of US President Joe Biden, who has a less cordial relationship with Saudi leaders than the previous administration of Donald Trump did.

The project includes "Trump residential villas, a hotel, and a golf course", according to the filing, adding that it will be "developed over 10 years on an area of 3.5 million square meters".

It "is being developed with the support of the Omani Company for Development and Tourism (Omran), the executive arm of the Sultanate of Oman for tourism development," the filing said.

Trump, who stated this week that he will run for election in 2024, started his first international tour in Saudi Arabia after taking office in 2017.

Former U.S. Open champion Jon Rahm said he hopes compatriot Sergio Garcia's legacy will not be tarnished by his decision to join the Saudi-funded LIV Golf series. Spaniard Garcia, who has 16 wins on the DP World Tour and has been on the winning European team six times in 10 Ryder Cup appearances, was one of the first golfers to join LIV earlier this year. When asked if Garcia's switch to the Saudi-backed series could affect the former Masters champion's legacy, Rahm told reporters, "I hope not".

"I think to the core fans who have been fans of Sergio, I don't think they care, really, where he plays," added Rahm, speaking ahead of the DP World Tour Championship in Dubai. "It still shouldn't change what he's done in the game, what he's done in The Ryder Cup, European Tour, PGA Tour, shouldn't be affected by where he decides to play golf, at least in my mind. "It could have somewhat of an impact. I have a hard time believing a lot of those players are going to have a positive impact with their legacy right now ... He's done a lot for the game of golf, so it would be sad to see that change."

Rahm also heaped praise on world number one Rory McIlroy, who has been one of LIV Golf's fiercest critics. "It's great to see somebody with his platform to take a stand as he did, whether you agree with it or not, he's taken a stand on what he believes in and that's it," Rahm said. The PGA Tour faces another lawsuit as the legal battle over the conflict with the Saudi-backed LIV Golf circuit rumbles on. Attorney Larry Klayman has filed a Second Amended Class Action Complaint in Palm Beach County, Florida, against the PGA Tour, DP World Tour (formerly the European Tour) and the Official World Golf Rankings (OWGR). Klayman, who names PGA and DP World tour heads Jay Monahan and Keith Pelley in the filing, says their actions have broken competition law.

The PGA Tour declined to comment and the DP World Tour and OWGR did not immediately respond to a request for comment. The filing alleges that "there is a collusive, coordinated effort to destroy LIV Golf and its players in their infancy". In a statement on his 'Freedom Watch' website, Klayman said that the OWGR was "alleged to be major part of the conspiracy to restrain trade in violation of Florida's antitrust laws."

He said that "LIV Golf players are being denied world ranking points to eliminate them from playing in major and other tournaments, harming consumers in this respect as well." In the filing, Klayman also claims that the quality of golf offered at PGA Tour has been "diluted and destroyed by a deterioration of the talent level" as a result of suspensions of LIV Golf players.

The US PGA Tour has banned more than 30 players who have teed off in one of LIV's 48-man, 54-hole tournaments, a move that prompted 11 LIV Golf players to file an anti-trust lawsuit against the PGA Tour in August. Eight of the original plaintiffs in that suit, including vocal LIV supporter Phil Mickelson, have since removed their names from the action, while Bryson DeChambeau, Matt Jones and Peter Uihlein remain as plaintiffs along with LIV Golf itself.

In September, the PGA Tour filed a countersuit against LIV Golf, accusing it of interfering with its contracts with players. In August, a US judge denied a request by three LIV Golf players for a temporary restraining order that would have allowed them to compete in the US PGA Tour's FedEx Cup playoffs.

But the US Department of Justice has opened an anti-trust investigation into the PGA Tour's actions in attempting to quell the upstart circuit. The DP World Tour's efforts to suspend golfers who participate in LIV Golf has also sparked litigation in Europe. Klayman is also representing LIV player Patrick Reed in two defamation lawsuits seeking a total of $750 million against various members of the media. In a statement on his 'Freedom Watch' website, Klayman said that the OWGR was "alleged to be major part of the conspiracy to restrain trade in violation of Florida's antitrust laws." He said that "LIV Golf players are being denied world ranking points to eliminate them from playing in major and other tournaments, harming consumers in this respect as well." In the filing, Klayman also claims that the quality of golf offered at PGA Tour has been "diluted and destroyed by a deterioration of the talent level" as a result of suspensions of LIV Golf players. Also read: Abu Dhabi Grand Prix: Lewis Hamilton has one last shot to avoid first winless season The US PGA Tour has banned more than 30 players who have teed off in one of LIV's 48-man, 54-hole tournaments, a move that prompted 11 LIV Golf players to file an anti-trust lawsuit against the PGA Tour in August. Golf's PGA Tour, DP World Tour face new lawsuit as legal battle over conflict with LIV Golf continues

World number one Rory McIlroy said LIV Golf CEO Greg Norman must step down from his position immediately as golf's tours need an "adult in the room" to help end the stalemate in their feud. LIV Golf has lured away some of the U.S.-based PGA Tour's top players with huge sums of money, leading to a simmering feud within the sport. The players competing in the breakaway series have been suspended from the PGA Tour.

LIV has filed a lawsuit accusing the PGA Tour of antitrust violations. The PGA Tour has filed a counterclaim. Attempts by Europe's DP World Tour to suspend players have been unsuccessful with LIV golfers still eligible to compete at its showcase events pending a court hearing next year. Speaking to reporters before the DP World Tour Championship in Dubai, McIlroy said that "nothing will happen" as long as the lawsuits were ongoing. "You're limited in what you can do. I think from whatever happens with those two things, there's a few things I'd like to see on the LIV side that needs to happen," McIlroy said.

"Greg needs to go. He needs to exit stage left. He's made his mark but now is the right time to say, look, you've got this thing off the ground but no one is going to talk unless there's an adult in the room that can actually try to mend fences. Greg Norman must quit LIV role to end stalemate, says No. 1 ranked Rory McIlroy

LIV Golf announced on Sunday a multi-year commitment to bring league events to Australia starting next April at The Grange Golf Club in Adelaide. The April 21-23 tournament at The Grange will be one of 14 events on LIV Golf League's 2023 schedule and will give fans a chance to see reigning British Open champion Cameron Smith and fellow Australians Marc Leishman and Matt Jones in action.

"This is an opportunity to grow the game with generations of Australians while connecting them with star players like Cameron Smith," LIV Golf CEO Greg Norman said in a news release. "There is massive potential for Australia to play a bigger role in this great sport, and I couldn't be more excited to showcase Adelaide for our league's debut year."

The Grange was the site of former world number one Norman's first professional victory in 1976 and, among other events, hosted the Women's Australian Open in 2019 and 2016. Consistent with the 2022 LIV Golf Invitational Series, which launched in June, LIV Golf League will feature simultaneous team and individual play, with golfers competing for an unprecedented $405 million in prize purses. The full 2023 league schedule, to be released in coming weeks, will run from February to September and will not compete with golf's four majors, international team events or heritage events.

The Saudi Arabia-backed LIV Golf series has lured players with the promise of guaranteed, big-money paydays and a reduced schedule, while the U.S.-based PGA Tour has suspended members who opted to join the rival circuit. Among the more high-profile players to join LIV are World Golf Hall of Fame member Phil Mickelson, twice major champion Dustin Johnson and 2020 U.S. Open winner Bryson DeChambeau.

Australia to host LIV Golf event in April 2023 in Adelaide

Tiger Woods said Wednesday he would be returning to action at the Hero World Challenge in what will be the golf great's first tournament since the British Open in July.

The 15-time major champion posted a Twitter message confirming his involvement in the 20-man tournament, where he is the host, at the Albany course in the Bahamas, from December 1-4.

Woods, a five-time winner of the event, is joined by American compatriot Kevin Kisner and England's Tommy Fleetwood in completing the field.

"I am excited to announce that I will be in the field for this year's #HeroWorldChallenge," Woods said. "A big welcome to @K_Kisner and @TommyFleetwood1 for joining us as well. See you soon at Albany!"

This week has seen Woods caddying for son Charlie this week and he recently said he intended to take part in 'The Match', a 12-hole exhibition, with Rory McIlroy, Jordan Spieth and Justin Thomas on December 10 in what could be a busy finish to a restricted 2022 schedule following his recovery from a career-threatening car crash.

The exhibition is set for the weekend before the PNC Championship in Orlando where Woods has previously played alongside Charlie.

Woods missed the cut at this year's British Open at St Andrews, having twice won the sport's oldest major at the Scottish course in 2000 and 2005.

The 46-year-old has appeared in just three professional tournaments this year, all of them majors.

Woods, who needed screws and metal rods to hold together his shattered right leg, made his return to competition 14 months after the accident at this year's Masters.

He finished 47th at Augusta but achieved a victory of sorts simply by walking 72 holes over the difficult layout.

He then withdrew from the PGA Championship after 54 holes, struggling with stamina issues after making the cut.

Tiger Woods announces return to golf at Hero World Challenge

Six-time LPGA winner Jessica Korda said on Tuesday that she will miss the rest of the LPGA season with a back injury but expects to return "healthier and stronger" next year. There are two events left in the LPGA's 2022 season starting with this week's Pelican Women's Championship in Florida, where Korda's younger sister Nelly Korda is the defending champion and the Nov. 17-20 CME Group Tour Championship.

"Playing anything further would have made my recovery a lot longer, so per doctor's recommendation and talking to my team, we've decided that this is the right call," Korda, 29, wrote on social media. World number 16 Korda earned six top-10 finishes on the LPGA Tour in 2022 with her best result coming in April at the year's first major where she was runner-up in The Chevron Championship.

In her most recent start, Korda tied for 24th place at the Ascendant LPGA benefiting Volunteers of America five weeks ago in Texas. Korda, who has missed events in the past with a wrist injury and rib sprain, did not specify what her injury is or what form of treatment she will be receiving. "I'm beyond bummed. I haven't had the most luck when it comes to injuries in my career, nonetheless, I'm going to keep on keeping on," wrote Korda. "Excited to be back next year for my 13th season on tour healthier and stronger."

Tiger Woods and Rory McIlroy will compete against fellow major winners Justin Thomas and Jordan Spieth at Pelican Golf Club in Belleair, Florida next month for the seventh edition of "The Match", Turner Sports said on Monday.

The 12-hole, made-for-TV exhibition on Dec. 10 will be played under the lights and will be the latest event for Woods, whose schedule this year has been limited to three starts after a February 2021 car crash that nearly cost him his right leg.

This will be Woods' third appearance in "The Match" after he lost to Phil Mickelson in the inaugural event in 2018 before getting some revenge in 2020 when he and former NFL quarterback Peyton Manning beat Mickelson and current NFL great Tom Brady.

American Dustin Johnson's 4 Aces squad won the inaugural LIV Golf Series team championship at Trump National on Sunday to claim the $16 million top prize.

Johnson, who earned a reported $150 million by signing up to the Saudi-backed venture, pockets another $4 million as his share of the team prize money to add to the rewards he gained through winning the debut season's individual title.

Between team prizes throughout the season and individual event wins, plus his $18 million bonus for claiming the year's individual crown, Johnson ends the inaugural LIV campaign with an eye-watering $35 million in earnings.

"Personally, my season, yeah, you add up the numbers and it was great, but I played good -- I didn't play my best, so it always could be better, but that's golf," Johnson said.

"But I'm just happy that the 4 Aces just won this tournament. That's all that matters," he said after shooting a two under-par 70 on the Doral Blue Monster course.

Johnson's all-American team -- featuring Talor Gooch, Patrick Reed and Pat Perez -- shot a combined 7-under 281, winning by a shot over Cameron Smith's all-Australian Punch GC.

British Open champion Smith shot a superb 65 and jousted with Johnson until the death. The winning team were sprayed by champagne on the final green on a day in which $34 million in prize money was distributed to the four teams in the final.

While the celebrations were genuine and the team format certainly generated enthusiasm from players and attracted a decent crowd to the South Florida course owned by former US President Donald Trump, the first LIV season has caused division within golf that shows no signs of ending.

Reports suggest LIV Golf is looking to add more top players to its lineup ahead of an expanded 14-event second season. Johnson said LIV will go from strength to strength.

"Just look at what happened today," he said. "Obviously, yeah, it was a team effort, but coming down the 18th hole, it ended up coming down to me and Cam playing the 18th hole to see who wins the team championship.

"You couldn't have drawn it up any better, but I think that's what LIV is. Look at all the fans. Look how much fun they have. I think this season went incredible and I think next season is going to be even better."

With legal cases heading to courts, disputes over world ranking points and Ryder Cup eligibility issues for LIV players, the rancour in the golf world doesn't look to soon fade, not to mention criticism over the financial backing of the Saudi sovereign wealth fund PIF over human rights issues in Saudi Arabia.

But on Sunday, LIV players were in a bullish mood and Perez used the occassion to make his feelings clear about criticism of the new circuit.

"All the pushback, all the negative comments, everything we've gotten, at this point, I really don't care. I mean, I don't care. I'm paid. I don't give a damn," Perez said.

"My team played unbelievable this year. I feel like I'm really part of something that I've never been part of, other than me and my caddie, we've just been just us our whole life.

"To have these guys and their caddies and families and coaches and everybody, it's just one big family now. I just couldn't be any happier. It's unbelievable."

I think this season went incredible and I think next season is going to be even better." But on Sunday, LIV players were in a bullish mood and Perez used the occassion to make his feelings clear about criticism of the new circuit.

The PGA Tour blew it by refusing to negotiate with the Saudi-backed LIV Golf Series and therefore find themselves in a difficult spot dealing with "good people" with unlimited money, former U.S. president Donald Trump said on Thursday.

The LIV Series, bankrolled by Saudi Arabia's Public Investment Fund, is offering up to $250 million in prize money for its eight events, including an eye-popping record $50 million purse this weekend at Trump National Doral Club where the first team champion will be crowned. But the Saudi money has come under plenty of scrutiny with critics accusing LIV golfers of being little more than well paid mercenaries in a "sportwashing" scheme by a nation trying to improve its reputation over its human rights record.

LIV Golf also spent nearly $1 billion in signing bonuses, according to reports, to lure away some of the PGA Tour's top names including major winners Phil Mickelson, Dustin Johnson, Bryson DeChambeau and Cameron Smith, sparking a feud over how the sport is run.

"I think that ultimately something gets worked out but the Tour handled it so badly," Trump told a small group of media and supporters at the conclusion of his Pro Am round on Thursday. "The people at the top, something should happen with them. They are dealing with very good people with unlimited money."

Trump boasted that it was LIV that wanted to stage their season-ending extravaganza at his Miami club, adding that the PGA Tour was desperate to get back as well.

World number one Rory McIlroy said the feud between the PGA Tour and LIV Golf Series is "out of control" and that it could leave the game "fractured" for a long time. The Saudi-backed LIV series has lured away some of the PGA Tour's top members with huge sums of money, while those who joined the rebel circuit have been suspended by the U.S.-based circuit. LIV has filed a lawsuit accusing the PGA Tour of antitrust violations, while the PGA Tour has filed a counterclaim.

"This 'us versus them' thing has gotten way out of control already," McIlroy, one of LIV Golf's fiercest critics, told the Guardian. "If the two entities keep doubling down in both directions, it is only going to become irreparable. We are going to have a fractured sport for a long time. That is no good for anyone." Several of McIlroy's former Ryder Cup teammates, including Ian Poulter, Lee Westwood and Sergio Garcia, have joined the controversial circuit and it is unclear whether they will be allowed to feature in next year's event.

Henrik Stenson has been stripped of Team Europe's captaincy after joining the Saudi-backed series. "I think it is the first time in my life that I have felt betrayal, in a way," he said. "You build bonds with these people through Ryder Cups and other things. Them knowing that what they are about to do is going to jeopardise them from being a part of that ever again? "I would like to think the Ryder Cup means as much to them as it does to me. Maybe it does. But knowing what the consequences could be, I just could never make that decision."

McIlroy said players should have tried to resolve their issues with the established tours rather than switching to LIV. Rory McIlroy said he did not agree with Phil Mickelson's assertion that the PGA Tour is "trending downwards" and added that golfers who joined the Saudi-backed breakaway LIV Golf Series have thrust the sport into a state of flux. The LIV Series, which launched in June, has lured away some of the sport's biggest names with enormous purses while those who joined the rebel circuit are no longer eligible to participate in PGA Tour events.

Six-times major winner Mickelson said last week that he was happy with his decision to join LIV and that he had picked the "winning side". "I don't agree with what Phil said - I certainly don't see the PGA Tour trending downward at all," four-times major winner McIlroy told reporters at Congaree Golf Club on Wednesday, ahead of the CJ Cup in Ridgeland, South Carolina. "I don't think anyone that takes a logical view of the game of golf can agree with what he said ... The guys that went over to LIV, they're the ones that have made the disruption, they're the ones that have sort of put the golf world in flux right now. Acknowledging the possibility that most LIV Golf players won't be allowed entry to the sports' top events, Saudi Golf Federation CEO Majed Al Sorour said the new circuit might create its own majors. In an article published Tuesday, Sorour told the New Yorker, "For now, the majors are siding with the (PGA) Tour, and I don't know why. If the majors decide not to have our players play? I will celebrate. I will create my own majors for my players. Honestly, I think all the tours are being run by guys who don't understand business."

Players who left the PGA Tour for Saudi-backed LIV Golf this year were suspended from the U.S.-based circuit. LIV is attempting to get its events sanctioned by the Official World Golf Ranking (OWGR), which could put its players in line to make the 2023 majors on the merits of their LIV results.

Thus far, though, the OWGR has yet to approve LIV events for its formula despite LIV recently teaming with the MENA Tour of Middle Eastern and North African events. Sorour told the New Yorker that LIV's plans were nearly scuttled after Phil Mickelson was quoted decrying Saudi Arabia's human-rights history. "I called the boss (Yasir Al-Rumayyan, the governor of the Saudi Public Investment Fund) and said, 'Everyone's walking away. Do you want to do it or not?'" Sorour said, according to the New Yorker. "Get the biggest mediocres, get the 10 (players) that we have, get you and I, and let's go play for $25 million."

Ultimately, LIV was able to attract Mickelson, Dustin Johnson, Bryson DeChambeau, Patrick Reed, Bubba Watson, Cameron Smith, Sergio Garcia and Lee Westwood, among others. One player they didn't sign was Tiger Woods. While LIV Golf chief executive officer Greg Norman told Fox News in August that Woods declined an offer of between $700 million and $800 million, Sorour denied that report. "It's not straight-out money," Sorour told the New Yorker. "I never offered him that money -- not even close to that."

LIV plans to create its own majors for players who left PGA, says Saudi Golf CEO

American Keegan Bradley sealed his first PGA Tour victory in four years with a one-stroke win at the Zozo Championship in Chiba, Japan as overnight leader Rickie Fowler faded in the final round on Sunday.

Bradley closed with a two-under 68 -- 15-under overall -- to finish ahead of compatriots Fowler and Andrew Putnam, who shared second place on a see-sawing day of action in the $11 million tournament where the victor earns $1.98 million.

Fowler came into the fourth round at the Narashino Country Club at 14-under for a one-shot advantage over Bradley and two strokes on Putnam, but he was unable to end a three-year PGA title drought at the Tour's only event in Japan.

The trio all grabbed the lead at different stages on Sunday but Bradley went two clear with 20-foot birdie putt at the 11th hole before Putnam set up a potentially thrilling finish after catching up with him on the 16th.

Six-times major winner Phil Mickelson said he loves his decision of joining the Saudi-backed breakaway LIV Golf Series, which he believes is "trending upwards" while the PGA Tour will be "trending downwards". LIV Series is 'trending upwards', says six-time major winner Phil Mickelson

Former U.S. Open champion Graeme McDowell said on Wednesday (October 12) that the world rankings system will become inaccurate and irrelevant if points are not awarded for events on the LIV Golf Series. LIV Golf, which is backed by Saudi Arabia's Public Investment Fund, submitted an application to the Official World Golf Ranking (OWGR) board in July, and earlier this month formed an alliance with the MENA Tour in a bid to fast-track its quest for ranking points.

The OWGR said it would make a decision after reviewing changes to the MENA Tour, prompting LIV golfers to say it was dragging its feet. Two-time major winner Dustin Johnson clinched the individual title in the LIV event in Bangkok on Sunday and McDowell said failure to award him ranking points meant the two-time major winner was not in his proper spot.

"This guy standing in the middle (Dustin Johnson) of the three of us, if his world ranking is inaccurate then the whole system's inaccurate," McDowell told a news conference on Wednesday, speaking alongside Johnson and Harold Varner III. "I feel like LIV tried to do everything they possibly can to be legitimate in the eyes of the OWGR. "The word 'Official' has to go away from OWGR if they don't take care of the players out here."

Johnson, whose ranking has dropped to 24th from third at the end of 2021, pocketed $18 million after clinching the individual LIV title with a 16th-place finish in Bangkok. "The longer it takes obviously the more irrelevant it becomes for us. Because if you wait too long, all our rankings are going to drop so much that it's not even going to really, it's not going to matter for us," Johnson said.

Asked if he regretted joining LIV Golf after earning around $30 million, Johnson replied sarcastically. "I really regret my decision to come here. It's just so terrible. I'm sitting there last night thinking about it, it was really bothering me a lot. Yeah, I just can't get over it." LIV Golf has lured away some of the U.S.-based PGA Tour's top members with huge sums of money, leading to a simmering feud between the sport's top players and organisers.

Players who compete in the breakaway series have been suspended from the PGA Tour. Attempts of Europe's DP World Tour to follow suit have so far been unsuccessful with LIV players still eligible to compete at its showcase events pending a court hearing next year.

On Tuesday, former Masters champion Hideki Matsuyama said he was "fully committed" to the PGA Tour but thought golfers competing on the LIV should be eligible for ranking points. LIV's individual competition concludes in Jeddah from Oct. 14-16 before a final team championship in Miami.

"The word 'Official' has to go away from OWGR if they don't take care of the players out here." Johnson, whose ranking has dropped to 24th from third at the end of 2021, pocketed $18 million after clinching the individual LIV title with a 16th-place finish in Bangkok. "The longer it takes obviously the more irrelevant it becomes for us. Because if you wait too long, all our rankings are going to drop so much that it's not even going to really, it's not going to matter for us," Johnson said.

World rankings inaccurate if LIV events snubbed, says former US champion Graeme McDowell
