Pandora, the world's leading jeweller in terms of products sold, has made a groundbreaking decision to cease the use of mined silver and gold in its manufacturing process. This is based on a Reuters report. The Danish company, renowned for its popular charm bracelets ranging from $65 to $95, now exclusively utilises recycled precious metals, significantly reducing its carbon footprint. "Using recycled metals cuts Pandora's indirect CO2 emissions by around 58,000 tonnes annually,” Reuters quoted Mads Twomey-Madsen, the Senior Vice President of Communications and Sustainability at Pandora, as saying. Previously, Pandora used to purchase about 340 tonnes of silver and one tonne of gold, generating about 264,224 tonnes of CO2 though its supply chain. The shift to recycled metals aligns with Pandora's broader environmental goals, aiming to mitigate the ecological impact of its operations. The move is part of a significant investment by the company, allocating approximately $10 million annually to facilitate the transition, a cost that Pandora intends to absorb without passing it on to consumers through price hikes. While the adoption of recycled metals presents environmental benefits, it also introduces unique challenges, notably the risk associated with stolen gold being sold as scrap for recycling. In response, Pandora has implemented a chain of custody standard developed by the Responsible Jewellery Council (RJC). This standard includes exclusions, such as gold coins and gold bars, as a source of recycled gold. Twomey-Madsen noted that Pandora requires suppliers to adhere to the RJC standard, ensuring transparency and accountability in the sourcing of recycled silver and gold. As part of this transition, suppliers are mandated to segregate certified recycled metals from non-certified ones. Twomey-Madsen also highlighted the company's willingness to pay a premium for recycled metals, emphasising the support provided to suppliers in making this transition.
The World Gold Council (WGC) on Tuesday expressed concerns that gold prices reaching near record highs may diminish the demand for gold in India during the country's peak festival season.

India, the world's second-largest gold consumer, is now witnessing a potential drop in gold purchases, which could lead to the lowest buying volumes in three years, stated the WGC.

The surge in gold prices in India, particularly in the December quarter, which traditionally sees the highest sales of the year, is expected to limit purchases during the festive season.

Reuters cited Somasundaram PR, the regional chief executive officer of WGC's Indian operations, as saying that local gold prices have surged this week, nearing the all-time high set earlier this year. Last year, gold prices during the December quarter were nearly 20 per cent lower compared to this year.

Typically, gold demand in India strengthens towards the end of the year, coinciding with the traditional wedding season and major festivals such as Diwali and Dusherra, where purchasing gold is considered auspicious. However, the soaring prices could potentially reduce the demand.

While gold consumption in India during the July-September quarter increased by 10 per cent due to a correction in local prices, overall demand for the year is expected to decline by around 3.3 per cent, according to Somasundaram. This could result in 2023 seeing the lowest demand for gold in three years.

Higher gold prices have also led some individuals to sell their old jewellery and coins, resulting in a 37 per cent surge in scrap supplies in the first nine months of the year, as reported by WGC data. The trend is likely to continue into the December quarter if gold prices remain at their current levels.

Global markets roundup | Gold shines for third straight week

A valuable collection of more than 700 gold coins, dating back to the period of the US Civil War, has been discovered in a cornfield in Kentucky. The collection, known as the "Great Kentucky Hoard," is now up for sale and is expected to fetch millions of dollars.

The coins were found earlier this year on a farm in the state of Kentucky, although the exact location and the identity of the person who made the discovery have not been disclosed.

'Most insane thing ever'

The coins have been authenticated and graded by a reputable firm, and the company responsible for selling them has released a video showcasing the excavation process. In the video, the person unearthing the coins expresses astonishment, and can be heard saying, "This is the most insane thing ever."

According to GovMint.com, the online platform handling the sale, the coins range in date from 1840 to 1863 and include various denominations such as $1 Gold Indians, $10 Gold Libertys, and $20 Gold Libertys.

Notably, the collection includes 18 extremely rare $20 Gold Libertys from 1863, minted in Philadelphia, which are highly sought-after by collectors and can reap six-figure sums.

Speculated history of the gold coins

Jeff Garrett, a renowned rare coin dealer who was approached by the anonymous finder several months ago, acknowledged the significance of this discovery. "The stunning number of over 700 gold dollars represents a virtual time capsule of Civil War-era coinage," Garrett said in a statement.

Kentucky, despite adopting a neutral position during the Civil War, was inevitably affected by the conflict between the slave-holding South and the North, which lasted from 1861 to 1865.

It is speculated that the Great Kentucky Hoard may have some historical links to this turbulent period, with the coins being lost and buried for over 150 years. The Numismatic Guaranty Company, responsible for certifying the coins, also acknowledged this possibility.

Kedarnath temple officials term 'gold turning into brass' videos as 'conspiracy'

A joint operation by the Indian Coast Guard, Directorate of Revenue Intelligence and Customs has foiled an attempt to smuggle gold bars weighing 32.689 kgs into India, via the sea route from Sri Lanka. Launched on Tuesday 30th May, this operation was carried out based on specific input from DRI regarding the smuggling of contraband from the island nation to India.

In anticipation of the smuggling attempt, Indian agencies maintained close surveillance of fishing vessels operating in the Gulf of Mannar and those near the India-Sri Lanka International Maritime Boundary Line (IMBL). The agencies apprehended two boats - a suspicious boat approaching the Mandapam fishing harbour in Tamil Nadu's Ramanathapuram district and another suspicious vessel south of Mandapam.

The sea route between northern Sri Lanka and the southern districts of Tamil Nadu, India, is highly porous and has a lot of fishing activity. In a matter of a few hours and a few dozen kilometres, it is possible to cross over the IMBL and reach the waters of the other side.

The first boat attempted to evade the agencies and then dumped the consignment overboard before its three-member crew was apprehended by the agencies. Upon interception, the second boat was said to have 21.269 kgs of smuggled gold and its two-member crew was taken into custody.

To recover the consignment that was dumped overboard by the first vessel, the Indian Coast Guard launched a diving operation at the site and recovered the gold consignment from the seabed, on Thursday. It contained gold bars weighing 11.6 kg. The entire seized consignment is valued at Rs. 20.20 crore or $2.5 million. The seized contraband and suspects are in DRI custody for legal action.
