Biden's campaign is updating its climate plan as it prepares for the Nov. 3 election contest against Republican President Donald Trump, a fervent advocate of fossil fuel drilling and mining who has downplayed climate change risks and unwound hundreds of environmental regulations.&nbsp;

Biden is being advised by a panel led by U.S. Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, who has called for a vast government-run effort to move away from fossil fuels, and John Kerry, who helped negotiate the Paris climate agreement as President Barack Obama's Secretary of State.

One senior Democrat familiar with the DNC's workings said climate council members overstepped by putting out recommendations ahead of the convention that are unlikely to be adopted in the party's platform, which will be drafted by a DNC committee by its August convention.

"It's a nonstarter," said the Democrat, who requested anonymity to discuss the matter. "Nobody takes them seriously. Joe Biden will be writing the platform for our national convention."

Two people close to the DNC said the council blindsided the party by publicly releasing the 14-page document.

"They acted like insurgents within the party trying to stake out a left flank before the convention," one of the sources said.

DNC and Biden campaign officials declined to comment.

The DNC agreed to create the council last year after angering environmental activists and progressives for declining to hold a standalone climate debate among competitors for the party's presidential nomination.

Council Chair Michelle Deatrick said the council has been in touch with both Biden's climate advisory panel and the campaign but published the recommendations ahead of the convention to help galvanize support for an aggressive plan.

"We are advocating to ensure these recommendations are adopted in the Democratic Party platform. We have strong support, and are building a coalition of environmental groups, Democratic Party groups and more," she said.

Deatrick was a campaign surrogate of Biden rival Bernie Sanders, who had released a $16 trillion climate plan last year before dropping his bid for the party nomination. Other council members include representatives and activists from conservation and environmental justice groups.

Cecil Roberts, president of the United Mineworkers Union, said the recommendations would have "political consequences."

"I can assure you that the mere issuing of this report has already cost Democrats potential votes in places like Pennsylvania, Ohio and Michigan," he said.

As the video surfaced online and on local news channels, the Hong Kong police reprimanded the police officer and reminded him to present himself professionally, especially when on-duty.

"Police are aware of that video clip. Management of the force is concerned and is of the view that the language used by the frontline police officer on June 12 was not relevant to his duties at the scene," a police spokesperson was quoted as saying.

"The officer has been rebuked and reminded to always present himself professionally and enhance his sensitivity," she added.

The benefits could stretch to $1.5 million or more over a 30-year period, not including any cost of living increases. Chauvin's annual payments could be even higher if he received significant amounts of overtime in prior years.

Two of the other officers charged in the death of Floyd were rookies, but a third also appears eligible to receive pension benefits from his time with the department, according to employment records released by the city.

Chauvin would likely be eligible for annual payments in the ballpark of $50,000 a year or more if he chose to start receiving them at age 55, according to a CNN analysis based on Chauvin's tenure, 2019 payroll data, contract details, pension plan guidance and Minneapolis Police Department salary schedules. The benefits could stretch to $1.5 million or more over a 30-year period, not including any cost of living increases.&nbsp;

Floyd, 46, died in Minneapolis on May 25 when a white police officer pinned him to the ground and knelt on his neck while he gasped for breath.

"What happened two weeks ago was a disgrace when you see that. What happened on numerous occasions over the last two weeks -- people were killed. A number of people were killed and it was very, very terrible and very, very unfair. A number of them were police officers. It was a very unfair situation. We don't want to see that," Trump said during a round table in Dallas, Texas.

He said he wanted people to "work together" on solutions to racial inequality. "We're working to finalise an executive order that will encourage police departments nationwide to meet the most current professional standards for the use of force, including tactics for de-escalation," Trump said at a round table with law enforcement in Dallas.

However, he offered few details about the executive order.

"Every child should be able to grow up in a safe community, free from violence and fear. They've taken a lot of the police protection away in Chicago, and they have great, great police in Chicago," he said.

Noting that Americans are good and virtuous people, the president said that they have to work together to confront bigotry and prejudice wherever they appear.

"But we'll make no progress and heal no wounds by falsely labeling tens of millions of decent Americans as racists or bigots. We have to get everybody together. We have to be on the same path. If we don't do that, we have problems. We'll do that. We'll do it. I think we're going to do it very easily," he said.

The United States, he said, has the greatest potential.

"We have the greatest country in the world. But we get off subject. We start thinking about things that don't matter or don't matter much. The important things, we don't even discuss. But we're here to discuss some very important things," he said.

Politicians, he alleged, make false charges, and they're trying to distract from their own failed records.

"They have some very bad records. These are usually the ones that cause the problems or can't solve the problems. These are the same politicians who shipped our jobs away and took tremendous advantage of all Americans," he said.

The United States has been swept by protests since Floyd's custodial death on May 25 in Minneapolis.

Trump also said he would not consider activists' calls to defund the police.

"We'll take care of our police. We're not defunding police. If anything, we're going the other route. We're going to make sure that our police are well-trained, perfectly trained, they have the best equipment," he said, adding that he preferred "dominating the streets with compassion."

Trump said that in addition to the executive order, he plans to address economic development in minority communities, health care disparities in minority communities and school choice.

Trump said that he is renewing the call on Congress to finally enact school choice now.

"School choice is a big deal because access to education is the civil rights issue of our time. It really is; it's the civil rights issue of our time. When you can have children go to a school where their parents want them to go. It creates competition. Other schools fight harder because, all of a sudden, they say, Wow. We're losing it. We have to fight hard. It gets better in so many different ways," he said.&nbsp;

The "Black Lives Matter" movement is getting global support, with countries like the UK, Canada, France, South Korea, and many others denouncing racism. In the US too, more than two weeks have passed since his killing, still, the anger of people from all walks of life has not doused.&nbsp;

It was early days for Bush when the 9/11 terror attacks jolted the entire nation. This was America's worst terror incident, where more than 3,000 people were killed after two planes crashed into twin towers of the World Trade Center in New York.&nbsp;

What followed was a war on Afghanistan and Iraq. The Bush administration, in an attempt to oust Osama bin Laden and his terror group al-Qaeda, the perpetrators of the 2001 attacks, from Afghanistan took the help of the Taliban. However, later along with its allies, the US overthrew the Taliban and al-Qaeda from Afghanistan in 2011. Despite establishing democracy in Afghanistan, the US couldn't eliminate the Taliban from the region and for 18 years, both Washington and the militant group kept fighting against each other. Apart from several thousands of civilians who became victims of this conflict, thousands of American soldiers died too and only this year, a truce was established. However, the Taliban's extremist activities and control have only risen and the region finds itself still in chaos.&nbsp;

In 2003, Bush accused Saddam Hussein's Iraq of carrying what he described as "weapons of mass destruction". The US successfully invaded Iraq, however, no such weapons as claimed by US administration were found. Also, in 2003, when the US mission was almost successful, about 200 US troops were killed. By 2008, in the last year of Bush junior, about 4,000 US soldiers got killed in attacks by insurgents, militants based in Iraq.&nbsp;

Both Iraq and Afghanistan, which saw American intervention under Bush, are still struggling to attain normalcy, and an end to attacks, massive unemployment, and economic woes don't seem near. When Bush was exiting office, the US also saw its worst recession since the Great Depression in 1929.&nbsp;

The US is currently fighting a war against racism, and history tells us that slavery played a role in it. Washington was born in an affluent family and his family owned slaves. At the time of this death, Washington owned some 300 slaves. However, it is well-documented that Washington was against the idea of slavery and in his will mentioned that his slaves be freed after his wife's death. However, his wife freed all their slaves after Washington's death in 1799.&nbsp;

After the 1783 war, Washington played a crucial role in bringing the common union of all the states and was also chosen to head the committee to draft the Constitution. His leadership, love for peace, convinced all the delegates that Washington will be the right person to lead the union.&nbsp;

Washington was reluctant at first, but later fought the elections that were held on January 7, 1989. The rest is history. Washington wanted the US to run with strength, dignity, and on its national identity. And during his eight years of presidency, he ensured that he acted what he preached. The country remained neutral in conflicts between different nations. During his tenure, five more states got included in the union.&nbsp;

Washington declined a third term and in his farewell address talked on his vision of the nation, which he believed should focus on unity, patriotism, and neutrality. Over 220 years have passed since this address, however, still, Washington's wisdom has the potential to strengthen the nation that is in the middle of great unrest.&nbsp;

However, his wife freed all their slaves after Washington's death in 1799. After the 1783 war, Washington played a crucial role in bringing the common union of all the states and was also chosen to head the committee to draft the Constitution. His leadership, love for peace, convinced all the delegates that Washington will be the right person to lead the union. Washington was reluctant at first, but later fought the elections that were held on January 7, 1989. The rest is history. Washington wanted the US to run with strength, dignity, and on its national identity. And during his eight years of presidency, he ensured that he acted what he preached. The country remained neutral in conflicts between different nations. During his tenure, five more states got included in the union. Washington declined a third term and in his farewell address talked on his vision of the nation, which he believed should focus on unity, patriotism, and neutrality. Over 220 years have passed since this address, however, still, Washington's wisdom has the potential to strengthen the nation that is in the middle of great unrest.

In Virginia, demonstrators tore down a monument of Jefferson Davis. He was the President of the confederate states -- the states that promoted slavery, racism and oppression of the Blacks.

Statues of Confederate&nbsp;soldiers were beheaded in Portsmouth. A few hours later, one of the structures was pulled down.

In England, authorities removed the statue of Robert Baden-Powell. He was once considered among the 13-most influential Britons in the 20th century. Then came the Black Lives Matter movement, and turns out Powell was racist, a supporter of Nazi Germany and fascist too.

In Belgium, a statue of Leopold II was daubed with paint and another was sprayed with graffiti.

An online petition against the King has passed 64,000 signatures, which says Leopold killed more than 10 million Congolese. This was during his 23-year reign over the colony.

These falling statues are telling us stories we had never heard of, at least most of us did not. How many of us had heard of Edward Colston, and that he transported 84,000 slaves from Africa to America?

Statues: A hero's memoir or dark page in history?

George Floyd, a black man whose death under the knee of a white police officer roused worldwide protests against racial injustice, was memorialised at his funeral on Tuesday. Some 2,500 people attended the funeral, after more than 6,000 people filed past Floyd's open casket on Monday.

The funeral followed two weeks of protests across the United States ignited by graphic video footage of Floyd handcuffed and lying face down on a Minneapolis street while an officer kneels into the back of his neck for nearly nine minutes. The video shows Floyd gasping for air as he cries out, "Mama," and groans, "Please, I can't breathe," before falling silent and still.

The officer, Derek Chauvin has since been charged with second-degree murder and three other officers with aiding and abetting Floyd's May 25 death. All were dismissed from the department a day after the incident.

Floyd's dying words have become a rallying cry for hundreds of thousands of protesters around the globe who have since taken to the streets, undaunted by the coronavirus pandemic, demanding justice for Floyd and an end to mistreatment of minorities by US law enforcement.

Civil rights activist the Rev. Al Sharpton called Floyd "an ordinary brother" who grew up in a housing project but left behind a legacy of greatness despite rejections in jobs and sports that prevented him from achieving all that he once aspired to become.

"God took the rejected stone and made him the cornerstone of a movement that is going to change the whole wide world," Sharpton said, invoking a biblical parable from the New Testament.

Sharpton said the Floyd family would lead a march on Washington being organized for August 28 to mark the 57th anniversary of the 1963 "I Have a Dream" speech given from the steps of the Lincoln Memorial by civil rights leader Martin Luther King Jr., who was assassinated in 1968.

Democratic representative of Texas, Al Green said, "This country has not reconciled its differences with us. We survived slavery, but we didn't reconcile. We survived segregation but we didn't reconcile. We are suffering invidious discrimination because we didn't reconcile. It's time for a department of reconciliation."

Former Vice President Joe Biden, the presumptive Democratic presidential candidate in the November 3 election, addressed the funeral service via a video recording, lamenting that "too many black Americans wake up knowing that they could lose their life in the course of just living their life.”

“We must not turn away. We cannot leave this moment thinking we can once again turn away from racism,” he said.

Merriam-Webster to reframe definition of 'racism'

One of the most-widely used dictionaries, Merriam-Webster is set to change the definition of “racism” after a young black woman suggested the word should reflect the oppressive realities faced by many people of colour.

A graduate from Drake University in Iowa, Kennedy Mitchum contacted the dictionary makers to improve its definition of racism.

"I basically told them that they need to include that there's a systematic oppression upon a group of people," she told a local news outlet. "It's not just, 'Oh, I don't like someone.'"

Peter Sokolowski, the editorial head of Merriam-Webster told news agency AFP that Mitchum’s request will be entertained and the meaning updated.

While the coronavirus epidemic has forced the cancellation of traditional Pride events in June, US&nbsp;gay groups are using virtual gatherings to amplify the voices of people of color, whose demands for social justice are taking the nation by storm.

"Pride started as a riot that was led by two women of color at Stonewall 51 years ago," said Sarah Kate Ellis, chief executive of LGBTQ group GLAAD. "It is part protest, part celebration. I am thrilled that we can really be an ally and can be a presenter of pushing for change and locking arms with the Black Lives Matter movement."

Riots at the Stonewall Inn in New York in 1969 were spearheaded by transgender activists Marsha P. Johnson, who was black, and Latina Sylvia Rivera.

This year, GLAAD has turned plans for an online drag celebration into a "more substantive discussion around black queer lives," Ellis said.

J. August Richards, a gay black actor on television's "Council of Dads," said he doesn't mind missing out on the usual celebrations because of the momentum from protests sparked by the death of African American George Floyd after a white police kneeled on his neck for nearly nine minutes.

"Right now, this uprising that is occurring - my entire attention is consumed by it," Richards said.

Nevertheless, he is delighted that the LGBTQ community has thrown its weight behind black causes.

"I think it's amazing and I pray it doesn't end here. I hope there is a continued conversation and a continued inclusion," he said.

Not everyone has been so welcoming. Plans by LA Pride to team up with Black Lives Matter for a gathering in Los Angeles were shelved after black activists said they hadn't been sufficiently consulted. Instead, black LGBTQ leaders are organizing a solidarity march to protest racial injustice, and LA Pride is supporting the effort.

But other initiatives are multiplying. Some 100 black, gay executives and entrepreneurs gathered this week for a virtual leadership forum on topics like health and social justice organized by Emil Wilbekin, founder of the Native Son black gay empowerment group.

"Black gay men are stepping up and leading. And I think it's our time, not just to lead, but to actually be the light and to empower our own community," said Wilbekin.
