<p>“Where a person was using their new gender with an organisation prior to their death, and that was on their personal records, then we anticipate that the organisation would engage with their family members using the new gender," said Andrew, adding that "these organisations could include the NHS".&nbsp;</p>

<p>Sir Liam Fox, the MP for North Somerset did not agree with Nichols' demand and said the government should not encourage the idea.&nbsp;</p>

<p>“It is patently absurd, factually inaccurate and a statistical distortion. We should not be encouraging the idea that people can simply choose to change their biological status nor should we bend truth to accommodate an ever more extreme and dangerous ideology," he told <em>The Telegraph.&nbsp;</em></p>

<p>The description of the course, during which the stabbing attack took place, states that it delves into "construction of gender in the history of philosophy through contemporary discussions."&nbsp;</p>

<h2><strong>University community left shocked&nbsp;</strong></h2>

<p>Yusuf Kaymak, a student who was present in the class at the time, recounted the events. He mentioned that approximately 40 students were in attendance at the time of the stabbing attack.&nbsp;</p>

<p>In the film, Cruz's character attempts to protect her teenage daughter, who identifies as a boy, in a bourgeois household dominated by an abusive, unfaithful husband.</p>

<p>It is not alone at this year's festival in embracing artists who reject traditional gender roles or tackle issues around sexual identity.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Another film in the main competition 'Monica' by Italian director Andrea Pallaoro, stars a transgender actress in the leading role -- a first in 79 editions of the festival.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Trace Lysette, known for her role in Amazon Prime series 'Transparent', plays a transgender woman who returns to Ohio after a long absence to care for her dying mother.&nbsp;</p>

<p>"It's very rare that you see a script where there's a trans character at the centre and the movie is told through her lens," Lysette told reporters.&nbsp;</p>

<p>"Usually trans characters are more a sidebar vehicle for someone else's story."</p>

<p>Besides exploring the title character's emotional and psychological world, the movie reflects on "the precarious nature of each of our identities when faced with the need to survive and transform", said Pallaoro.</p>

<p>Britain's National Health Service (NHS) has announced that it will be shutting its three-decades-old Gender and Identity Development Service (Gids) centre at Tavistock &amp; Portman NHS foundation. Reportedly, an independent review has found the institute inadequate in dealing with the needs of the patients.</p>

<p>The institute aimed to help children and other young people, confused about their gender identities to find themselves and their identities.</p>

<p>However, in recent times, the whistleblowers, parents and other stakeholders revealed that the institute was inept at handling such delicate discussions, with some alleging that patients were referred to a gender transitioning pathway too quickly.</p>

<p>Keira Bell, a former patient had brought a suit against the institute in the High Court where she questioned the institute's use of puberty blockers.</p>

<p>Keira also stated that she was not challenged enough for her decision as a 16-year-old by the institute when she started taking drugs that transitioned her from female to male. A decision that Keira severely regretted later on in her life.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Moreover, being the lone institute for gender identity in the region, the sheer number of cases overwhelmed the capacity of the institute.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Dr Hilary Cass conducted the independent review and also noted in her interim report, “It has become increasingly clear that a single specialist provider model is not a safe or viable long-term option in view of concerns about lack of peer review and the ability to respond to the increasing demand.”</p>

<p>NHS now plans to replace the Tavistock clinic with numerous regional centres which will allow patients to receive complete and holistic treatment.&nbsp;</p>

<p>A centre in London and another in northwest England is expected to come up by spring next year as NHS attempts to build a regional network of such institutions.&nbsp;As for children currently enrolled at the clinic, there will be no immediate change.&nbsp;</p>

NHS brings down the shutters on its three-decades old gender identity institute

<p>Canada has banned conversion therapy, joining a select list of countries that discontinued the discredited treatment that claims to be able to change a person's sexual orientation or gender identity.</p>

<p>The Canadian government on Friday officially implemented the ban which was passed by the Parliament in December 2021.</p>

<p>Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau made the announcement on Twitter on Saturday, saying that the Canadian bill makes “providing, promoting, or advertising conversion therapy” a criminal offence.</p>

<p>“As of today, it’s official: Conversion therapy is banned in Canada. Our government’s legislation has come into force —which means it is now illegal to promote, advertise, benefit from, or subject someone to this hateful and harmful practice. LGBTQ2 rights are human rights,” he said.</p>

<p>Under the new law, anyone who looks to subject someone of any age, consenting or not, to so-called conversion therapy could face up to five years in prison.</p>

<p>In addition to this, if someone is found to be promoting, advertising, or profiting from providing the practice, they could face up to two years in prison.</p>

<p>The conversion therapies are based on the premise that sexual orientation can be changed or “cured”. It's often performed by religious leaders, but licensed clinicians are also engaged in the practice.</p>

<p>Among the practices followed in the conversion include talk and aversion therapy, as well as medical or drug-induced treatments.</p>

<p>Apart from Canada, there are only a handful of countries that have banned conversion therapies, they are: Brazil, Ecuador, Germany and Malta have an outright ban on the practice.</p>

<p>Some countries have banned the practice indirectly, for example, Argentina, Uruguay, Samoa, Fiji and Naura, whereas US, Australia and Spain have outlawed it in some areas.</p>
