Gaza's civil defence agency said an Israeli strike Saturday on a school-turned-shelter in the Palestinian territory's largest city killed 22&nbsp;people, while Israel's military said it targeted Hamas militants.

"Civil Defence crews recovered 22&nbsp;people, including 13 children and six women", one of whom was pregnant, said agency spokesman Mahmud Bassal.

There were "around 30 injured, including nine children (needing) limb amputations, as a result of an Israeli bombing on Al-Zaytoun School C" in Gaza City, he said.

The health ministry in the Hamas-run territory earlier said 21 people were killed.

Thousands of displaced people had sought shelter at the school, Bassal said.

Israel's military said in a statement the air force had "conducted a precise strike on terrorists who were operating inside a Hamas command and control centre in Gaza City".

It said the target was "embedded inside" the Al Falah School, adjacent to the Al-Zaytoun School buildings.

An AFP reporter at the scene confirmed that Al-Zaytoun School C had been hit.

Witnesses said that before the strike, orphans had gathered there because they were due to receive sponsorship from a local NGO for humanitarian assistance.

Israel's military did not provide a death toll but said "numerous steps were taken to mitigate the risk of harming civilians, including the use of precise munitions, aerial surveillance and additional intelligence".

It was the latest in a series of Israeli strikes on school buildings housing displaced people in Gaza.

A strike on the United Nations-run Al-Jawni School in central Gaza on September 11 drew international outcry after the UN agency for Palestinian refugees said six of its staffers were among the 18 reported fatalities.

The Israeli military accuses Hamas of hiding in school buildings where many thousands of Gazans have sought shelter -- a charge denied by the Palestinian militant group.

Hamas on Saturday condemned the strike on Al-Zaytoun School C, describing it in a statement as "a war crime under American cover", a reference to Washington being Israel's most important military backer.

"There has also been an increase in attacks on residential neighbourhoods and tents of displaced people," the Hamas statement said.

The vast majority of the Gaza Strip's 2.4 million people have been displaced at least once by the ongoing war, which was triggered by Hamas's October 7 attack on Israel.

<h2>'Health ministry staffers killed'&nbsp;</h2>

The war has badly battered Gaza's health sector, and the World Health Organization said earlier this month that only 17 of its 36 hospitals were partially functional.&nbsp;

Gaza's health ministry said on Saturday that in a separate incident, an Israeli air strike hit a warehouse in a "densely populated" area of southern Gaza, killing "three ministry of health personnel and a passer-by" and injuring six others.

"The warehouse was directly targeted with several missiles while doctors and staff were performing their duties, preparing to transport the medicines stored there to hospitals under the ministry of health that are facing severe shortages of medicines and supplies," a statement said.

Israel's military had no immediate comment on the warehouse strike.

Hamas's October 7 attack resulted in the deaths of 1,205 people on the Israeli side, most of them civilians, according to an AFP tally based on official Israeli figures, which includes hostages killed in captivity.

Out of 251 people taken hostage that day, 97 are still being held inside the Gaza Strip, including 33 who the Israeli military says are dead.

At least 41,391 Palestinians, a majority of them civilians, have been killed in Israel's military campaign in Gaza since the war began, according to data provided by the health ministry there.

The United Nations has acknowledged these figures as reliable.

The Israeli military announced on Sunday (September 15) there was a "high probability" that the three hostages were killed in an airstrike carried out by the IDF in Gaza in November.&nbsp;

The announcement was made by the army while making public the investigations carried out into the deaths of Corporal Nik Beizer, Sergeant Ron Sherman and French-Israeli Elia Toledano.

The army said the investigations have revealed that the three hostages were killed in the same airstrike in which senior Hamas militant Ahmed Ghandour was targeted and&nbsp;lost his life in November.

The dead bodies of the three hostages were recovered and brought back to Israel in December.

<h2>Here's what IDF found regarding the death of hostages</h2>

"The findings of the investigation suggest a high probability that the three were killed as a result of a byproduct of an IDF air strike, during the elimination of the Hamas Northern Brigade commander, Ahmed Ghandour, on November 10th, 2023," said the military&nbsp;in a statement.

"This assessment is based on the location of where their bodies were found in relation to the strike's impact, performance analysis of the strike, intelligence findings, the results of the pathological reports, and the conclusions of the Forensic Medicine Institute," it added.

"This is a high-probability assessment based on all of the available information, but it is not possible to definitively determine the circumstances of their deaths," the military stated.

According to the investigation by the military, the three captives were held in a tunnel complex.

"At the time of the strike, the IDF did not have information about the presence of hostages in the targeted compound," said the military.

"Furthermore, there was information suggesting that they were located elsewhere, and thus the area was not designated as one with suspected presence of hostages," it added.

The three hostages were kidnapped during the October 7 attack by Hamas. The Israeli army found their bodies in December, however, the cause of death has been determined only recently.

Israeli airstrikes targeting Hamas militants hit UN school, homes in Gaza; 34 killed

The European Union's top diplomat Josep Borrell warned on Tuesday that increased violence in the occupied West Bank since the Israel-Hamas war erupted meant it risked becoming "a new Gaza".

Violence in the West Bank, which Israel has occupied since 1967, and is separated from the Gaza Strip by Israeli territory, has flared alongside the war that began after Palestinian militant group Hamas attacked Israel on October 7.

Borrell said Israel was opening "a new front... with a clear objective: to turn the West Bank into a new Gaza -– in rising violence, delegitimising the Palestinian Authority and stimulating provocations to react forcefully."

Israel was also "not shying away from saying to the face of the world that the only way to reach a peaceful settlement is to annex the West Bank and Gaza," Borrell added at a ministerial meeting of the Arab League in Cairo.

He accused "radical members of the Israeli government" of trying to make it "impossible to create a future Palestinian state", which Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and several cabinet members have painted as a threat to Israel.

Some Israeli ministers have recently called to increase military operations in the West Bank.

"Without action, the West Bank will become a new Gaza," Borrell said.

"And Gaza will become a new West Bank, as settlers' movements are preparing new settlements," he told the meeting.

"The international community deplores, feels, and condemns, but finds it hard to act."

Israeli settler attacks against Palestinians in the West Bank hit a record in 2023, according to Israeli rights group Yesh Din, and the European Union has said last year saw the most settlement building permits issued in decades.

Some 490,000 Israelis live in the West Bank, in settlements that are illegal under international law, alongside three million Palestinians.

Since the Gaza war began on October 7, Israeli troops or settlers have killed at least 662 Palestinians in the West Bank, according to the Palestinian health ministry.

"The level of suffering we are witnessing in Gaza is unprecedented in my mandate as secretary-general of the United Nations. I’ve never seen such a level of death and destruction as we are seeing in Gaza in the last few months," he said.

"The level of suffering we are witnessing in Gaza is unprecedented in my mandate as secretary-general of the United Nations. The chiefs&nbsp;of the United States'&nbsp;Central Intelligence Agency&nbsp;(CIA) and United Kingdom's&nbsp;intelligence agency MI6 jointly called for a ceasefire in Gaza in a rare joint public statement to the press, on Saturday (Sep 7) stressing the need for de-escalation in the ongoing Israel-Hamas war.&nbsp;

CIA Director William Burns and MI6 Chief Richard Moore said that their agencies have "exploited our intelligence channels to push hard for restraint and de-escalation," highlighting their behind-the-scenes efforts to broker peace.&nbsp;

The two intelligence chiefs, in an opinion piece&nbsp;for the Financial Times, said a ceasefire amid&nbsp;the ongoing Israel-Hamas war “could end the suffering and appalling loss of life of Palestinian civilians and bring home the hostages after 11 months of hellish confinement.”

The intelligence chiefs also highlighted the ongoing global threats posed by Russia, China, and international terrorism.

Israeli airstrikes on Saturday (August 31) killed at least 48 people in the Gaza Strip, according to Palestinian health officials. This attack comes just before a planned polio vaccination campaign was set to begin in the Palestinian enclave.&nbsp;

<h2>How many children will be vaccinated in Gaza?</h2>

The United Nations plans to vaccinate around 640,000 children in Gaza against polio, using daily eight-hour ceasefires in specific areas to carry out the vaccinations.

<h2>What prompted the urgent vaccination drive?</h2>

This vaccination drive comes after the first reported polio case of type 2 poliovirus in Gaza in 25 years, involving a 10-month-old boy who is now paralysed in one leg. The World Health Organisation (WHO) warned that this case of paralysis could indicate hundreds of others are&nbsp;infected with the virus but are not yet showing symptoms.

<h2>Deputy health minister calls for full ceasefire to ensure campaign success</h2>

Yousef Abu Al-Reesh, Gaza's deputy health minister, expressed concerns about the campaign's success, saying that vaccination teams would try to reach as many areas as possible. However, he stressed that only a full ceasefire would ensure that enough children are&nbsp;vaccinated.

"If the international community truly wants this campaign to succeed, it should call for a ceasefire, knowing that this virus does not stop, and can reach anywhere," he said during a press briefing at Nasser Hospital in Khan Younis.

On Saturday, as a symbolic gesture before the official start of the campaign, medical staff administered vaccines to some children in the wards of Nasser Hospital in Khan Younis.

WHO officials have stressed that at least 90 per cent&nbsp;of the children must receive two doses of the vaccine, with a four-week interval between doses, for the campaign to be effective. However, the campaign faces significant challenges, as Gaza has been largely reduced to rubble after 11 months of conflict.

On Thursday, WHO announced it had secured an agreement with Israel to allow limited pauses in the conflict to facilitate the vaccination campaign.

<h2>Vaccination campaign schedule and coordination</h2>

The three-day vaccination campaign in central Gaza is scheduled to start on Sunday (Sep 1), during a humanitarian pause from 6:00 am&nbsp;to 3:00 pm (local time). An additional day may be added if necessary, according to Dr Rik Peeperkorn, WHO's representative in the Palestinian territories.

Following this, the campaign will move to southern and northern Gaza during similar pauses, in coordination with Israeli authorities, Dr Peeperkorn added during a video press conference from Deir al-Balah in central Gaza.

Israeli strikes kill 48 ahead of WHO's polio campaign in Gaza; UN plans to vaccinate 640,000 children

Israeli and Hamas delegations failed to reach an agreement in the Gaza ceasefire talks in Cairo on Sunday (Aug 25). Neither party was willing to agree to several compromises presented by mediators, sources told Reuters.

However, a senior US official described the talks as "constructive" and said they were conducted in a spirit on all sides to reach "a final and implementable agreement."

"The process will continue over the coming days through working groups to further address remaining issues and details," said the anonymous official to Reuters.

The meeting in Cairo was the culmination of months of talks after the Hamas' attack on October 7, 2023, on Israel and Israel's&nbsp;military campaign since then.

One of the key points of contention in the ongoing talks, mediated by the United States, Egypt and Qatar, includes an Israeli presence in the Philadelphi Corridor, a narrow 14.5-km-long stretch of land along Gaza's southern border with Egypt.

Mediators put forward several alternatives to the presence of Israeli forces on the Philadelphi Corridor and the Netzarim Corridor which cuts across the middle of the Gaza Strip. Still, none were accepted by the parties.

Israel also took issue with releasing several Palestinian detainees and demanded that they exit Gaza if released, the sources added.

WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus said in a statement, that the baby, who has lost movement in his lower left leg, is now in stable condition.

In an effort to combat the spread of polio, the WHO has announced plans for two rounds of vaccination campaigns in the Gaza Strip, starting in late August and continuing into September 2024.

Jon Polin and Rachel Goldberg, parents of Hersh Goldberg-Polin, the US hostage held&nbsp;by Hamas in Gaza since October 7, 2023, gave an emotional speech at the Democratic National Convention. Parents of American hostage in Gaza call for ceasefire deal at DNC; 'stay strong. survive!'

The Israeli army said on Tuesday it retrieved the bodies of six hostages from Gaza's southern district of Khan Yunis in a joint operation with internal security agency Shin Bet.

The hostages were Yagev Buchshtab, Alexander Dancyg, Yoram Metzger, Nadav Popplewell, Chaim Perry, previously announced dead, and Avraham Munder, whose kibbutz of Nir Oz near Gaza announced his death earlier Tuesday.

Following intelligence and forensic analysis, the families of the dead hostages have been informed, the military said in a statement, without giving details of the operation in Khan Yunis.

The recovery of the bodies "provides their families with necessary closure and grants eternal rest to the murdered," campaign group the Hostages and Missing Families Forum said in a statement.

The forum called on the Israeli government to ensure that the remaining hostages are also returned to Israel in a negotiated deal.

"The Israeli government, with the assistance of mediators, must do everything in its power to finalise the deal currently on the table," it said.

Mediators Egypt, Qatar and the United States are urging Israel and Hamas to agree a ceasefire deal that would help secure the release of remaining hostages in exchange for Palestinian prisoners held in Israeli jails.

Earlier on Tuesday, Israeli kibbutz Nir Oz announced the death of Munder, 79.

"Kibbutz Nir Oz announces with great sadness the murder of the late Avraham Munder, 79, in captivity in Gaza after suffering physical and mental torture for months," the community said in a statement.

Among the six bodies released Tuesday, Metzger, Perry and Dancyg also hailed from Nir Oz, a community near Gaza that was particularly hard hit by the October 7 attack by Hamas on southern Israel.

Palestinian militants abducted Munder, his wife, daughter and grandson that day.

The other family members were released during the single, week-long truce of the war last November, while his son was killed on the day of the attack.

The Hamas attack resulted in the deaths of 1,199 people in Israel, most of them civilians, according to an AFP tally based on Israeli official figures.&nbsp;

Out of 251 people taken hostage that day, 105 are still being held hostage inside the Gaza Strip, including 34 the military says are dead.

Israel's retaliatory military campaign has killed 40,139 Palestinians in Gaza, according to the Hamas-run territory's health ministry, which does not give details of civilian and militant deaths.&nbsp;

Most of the dead in Gaza are women and children according to the UN human rights office.

Israeli army retrieves bodies of six hostages from Gaza

US Secretary of State Antony Blinken began crunch talks with senior officials in Israel on Monday in an attempt to advance a Gaza ceasefire-for-hostages deal. Watch in for more details!

US State Secy Antony Blinken in Israel to push for ceasefire talks

Gaza has recorded its first polio case in 25 years, the Palestinian health ministry said on Friday, after UN chief Antonio Guterres called for pauses in the Israel-Hamas war to vaccinate hundreds of thousands of children.

Tests in Jordan confirmed the disease in an unvaccinated 10-month-old from the central Gaza Strip, the health ministry in Ramallah said.

According to the United Nations, Gaza, now in its 11th month of war, has not registered a polio case for 25 years, although type 2 poliovirus was detected in samples collected from the territory's wastewater in June.

"Doctors suspected the presence of symptoms consistent with polio," the health ministry said. "After conducting the necessary tests in the Jordanian capital, Amman, the infection was confirmed."

The case emerged shortly after Guterres called for two seven-day breaks in the Gaza war to vaccinate more than 640,000 children.

Poliovirus, most often spread through sewage and contaminated water, is highly infectious. It can cause deformities and paralysis, and is potentially fatal. It mainly affects children under the age of five.

The UN health and children's agencies said they had made detailed plans to reach children across the besieged Palestinian territory and could start this month.

But that would require pauses in the 10-month old war between Israel and Hamas, they said.

"Preventing and containing the spread of polio will take a massive, coordinated and urgent effort," Guterres told reporters at UN headquarters in New York.

"I am appealing to all parties to provide concrete assurances right away guaranteeing humanitarian pauses for the campaign."

The World Health Organization and UN children's fund UNICEF said they were planning two seven-day vaccination drives across the Gaza Strip, starting in late August, against type 2 poliovirus (cVDPV2).

Last month, it was announced that type 2 poliovirus had been detected in samples collected in Gaza on June 23.

"These pauses in fighting would allow children and families to safely reach health facilities and community outreach workers to get to children who cannot access health facilities for polio vaccination," the agencies said in a statement said.

<h2>Regional public health issue</h2>

After 25 years without polio, its re-emergence in the Gaza Strip would threaten neighbouring countries, it added.

"A ceasefire is the only way to ensure public health security in the Gaza Strip and the region."

During each round of the campaign, the health ministry in Gaza, alongside UN agencies, would provide "two drops of novel oral polio vaccine type 2 (nOPV2) to more than 640,000 children under 10 years of age".

More than 1.6 million doses of nOPV2 were expected to transit through Israel's Ben Gurion Airport "by the end of August", the statement added.

The war was triggered by Hamas's unprecedented October 7 attack on Israel which resulted in the deaths of 1,198 people, mostly civilians, according to an AFP tally of Israeli official figures.

Gaza records first polio case in 25 years amid raging state of war

United States is an accomplice in Israel's war in Gaza and cannot be considered a neutral mediator as it supplies the regime with weapons of war, Iran's acting foreign minister Ali Bagheri Kani wrote on his x account late on Friday (August 16) night.&nbsp;

"In response to a phone call with the Prime Minister and the Foreign Minister of Qatar Mohammed bin Abdulrahman Al Thani, we exchanged views on the developments of the second day of talks to halt the Zionist regime’s genocidal war on Gaza," wrote Ali Bagheri Kani on the social media platform

Kani said that the process and results of the Friday talks in the Qatari capital Doha remain inconclusive due to several reasons. The latest issues and obstacles to reaching a ceasefire agreement include the persistent state of war in the blockaded Palestinian enclave of Gaza.&nbsp;

Meanwhile, the US Secretary of State Antony Blinken is set to arrive in Israel on Sunday (August 18, 2024) as part of Washington's ongoing diplomatic push to achieve a ceasefire in Gaza aimed to end the 10-month-old war between Israel and Hamas.
