A rocket attack on a football ground in the Israeli-occupied Golan Heights killed 12 people including children on Saturday, Israeli authorities said, blaming Hezbollah and vowing to inflict a heavy price on the Iran-backed Lebanese group.

After weeks of Israeli bombardment left them with nowhere else to go, hundreds of Palestinians have ended up in a former Gaza prison built to hold murderers and thieves.

Yasmeen al-Dardasi said she and her family passed wounded people they were unable to help as they evacuated from a district in the southern city of Khan Younis towards its Central Correction and Rehabilitation Facility.

They spent a day under a tree before moving on to the former prison, where they now live in a prayer room. It offers protection from the blistering sun, but not much else.

With no other refuge, Gazans seek shelter in former prison

The Israel Defense Forces on Saturday morning issued fresh evacuation orders to Palestinians in Khan Younis in the southern Gaza Strip, including in sections of the Israeli-designated humanitarian zone, citing intelligence that Hamas terrorists were operating in the area.

Israel war: 30 Palestinians killed in Israeli strike in Deir al-Balah

The Israeli military told Palestinians to temporarily evacuate southern neighborhoods of Gaza's Khan Younis region so it could "forcefully operate" there, telling them to relocate to a humanitarian area in Al-Mawasi, a statement from the military said on Saturday.

The fighting, more than nine months since the start of Israel's invasion of Gaza following the Oct. 7 attack, underlined the difficulty the Israeli Defence Forces (IDF) has in eliminating fighters of the militant Islamist group amid continued resistance.

On Friday the military said troops battled Palestinian fighters in Khan Younis, a city in the south of the enclave, and destroyed tunnels and other infrastructure, as they sought to suppress small militant units that have continued to hit troops with mortar fire.

More than 39,000 Palestinians have been killed by Israeli strikes in the enclave, according to Gaza health authorities, who do not distinguish between fighters and non-combatants.

Israeli officials estimate that some 14,000 fighters from militant groups including Hamas and Islamic Jihad have been killed or taken prisoner, out of a force they estimated to number more than 25,000 at the start of the war.

The military said on Saturday its calls to evacuate were communicated to the population via several mediums in order to mitigate danger to civilians.

The Saint Hilarion complex, one of the oldest monasteries in the Middle East, has been put on the UNESCO list of World Heritage sites in danger due to the war in Gaza, the body said Friday (Jul 26). UNESCO said the site, which dates back to the fourth century, had been put on the endangered list at the demand of Palestinian authorities and cited the "imminent threats" it faced. "It's the only recourse to protect the site from destruction in the current context," Lazare Eloundou Assomo, director of the UNESCO World Heritage Centre, told news agency AFP, referring to the war sparked by Hamas's October 7 attack on Israel. In December, the UNESCO Committee for the Protection of Cultural Property in the Event of Armed Conflict decided to grant "provisional enhanced protection" -- the highest level of immunity established by the 1954 Hague Convention -- to the site. Watch | Climate related displacement causes education loss, drop-outs latest UNESCO report reveals × UNESCO had then said it was "already concerned about the state of conservation of sites, before October 7, due to the lack of adequate policies to protect heritage and culture" in Gaza. The Hamas attack on October 7 resulted in the deaths of 1,197 people in Israel, most of them civilians, according to an AFP tally based on official Israeli figures. Israel's retaliatory offensive against Hamas has killed at least 39,175 Palestinians in Gaza, according to the Hamas-run territory's health ministry, which does not give details of civilian and militant deaths. Ancient Gaza monastery put on UNESCO endangered site list due to Israel-Hamas war

United States Vice President Kamala Harris appeared to be taking a balanced stand on the Israel-Hamas war, which is unusual for the world's most powerful nation, when she met Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.

In a rare take, Kamala Harris held the Israeli government responsible for the death of “far too many” civilians in the Gaza Strip and said “I will not be silent” as she also pledged “unwavering” support for the right of existence of the Jewish state.

In her first remarks on the Israel-Hamas war after the country's presumptive Democratic presidential nominee, Harris on Thursday (July 25) said that “it is time for this war to end” and also argued that the war was not a “binary issue”.

“To everyone who has been calling for a ceasefire, and to everyone who yearns for peace, I see you and I hear you,” said the 59-year old Harris, just after Netanyahu departed the White House.

“What has happened in Gaza over the past nine months is devastating — the images of dead children and desperate, hungry people fleeing for safety, sometimes displaced for the second, third or fourth time. We cannot look away in the face of these tragedies. We cannot allow ourselves to become numb to the suffering and I will not be silent," Harris said.

She said that she will "always" make sure that Israel is able to defend itself and added, “There has been hopeful movement in the talks to secure an agreement on this deal. And as I just told Prime Minister Netanyahu, it is time to get this deal done."

“Let’s get the deal done so we can get a cease-fire to end the war. Let’s bring the hostages home, and let’s provide much-needed relief to the Palestinian people. And ultimately, I remain committed to a path forward that can lead to a two-state solution," the country's vice president further said.

From when I was a young girl, collecting funds to plant trees for Israel, to my time in the United States Senate and now at the White House, I’ve had an unwavering commitment to the existence of the State of Israel, to its security and to the people of Israel.”

“I also expressed with the prime minister my serious concern about the scale of human suffering in Gaza, including the death of far too many innocent civilians. And I made clear my serious concern about the dire humanitarian situation there with over 2 million people facing high levels of food insecurity and half a million people facing catastrophic levels of acute food insecurity," she added.

The Israeli military initiated a new assault on Khan Younis in southern Gaza, resulting in the deaths of at least 70 people, according to medical sources.

This attack followed orders for Palestinians to evacuate multiple neighbourhoods, including some that had been designated by the military as part of a humanitarian zone.

According to the Palestinian civil defence estimation, around 400,000 people sheltering in the city were affected by the order, including some areas previously designated as humanitarian zones, such as the eastern part of Al-Mawasi. This sandy strip, with no infrastructure, has recently served as a refuge for Palestinians living in tent encampments.

However, the Israeli military did not comment on the death toll when asked by Agence France-Presse (AFP).

But in a statement, the military said the terrorists were eliminated by its fighter jets and tanks.

The military further said, the forces targeted more than 30 terror infrastructure sites in Khan Younis.

While, Israeli warplanes targeted a weapons storage facility, observation posts, tunnel shafts, and structures utilised by Hamas militants, it added. Many injured people were taken to Nasser Hospital in Khan Younis.

It may be mentioned here, that much of Khan Younis was destroyed by extreme attacks in the months before Monday’s (Jul 22) strikes, yet hundreds of thousands of people returned to seek shelter in tents in the eastern part of the city after they were displaced from other parts of Gaza.

Notably, over 39,000 people have been killed in Israel’s onslaught in Gaza since 7 October last year, when Hamas militants attacked Israeli territory, killing 1,200 people and taking about 250 hostages.

In what can only be described as a miracle, a newborn baby boy in Gaza was saved from his mother's womb after she died from wounds sustained during an Israeli strike.

The miracle took place at the Al-Awda Hospital where Ola Adnan Harb al-Kurd -- the mother, arrived 'barely alive' after surviving a night of missile strikes that killed more than 24 people, including six members of the same family at the Nuseirat refugee camp in central Gaza.

Surgeon Akram Hussein and his team started operating on Kurd instantly but despite their best efforts, could not save her, according to news agency AFP.

However, after an ultrasound detected the baby's heartbeat, the doctors got back to work and performed an emergency C-section to bring the baby into the world.

The infant was in critical condition but stabilised after receiving oxygen and medical attention, according to Raed al-Saudi, head of the hospital's obstetrics and gynaecology department.

The baby was placed in an incubator and later transferred to the Al-Aqsa Hospital in Deir el-Balah. Notably, the baby's mother was among three women and a child killed in the Israeli strike. Kurd's husband was also seriously wounded in the strike.

Israel-Hamas war: Newborn saved from dead mother's womb in Gaza

In the early hours of Friday, Houthi forces targeted the heart of Israel, specifically Tel Aviv, killing one person and injuring dozens. This marks the first direct attack on a major Israeli city by the Yemen-based group. The attack did not trigger air raid alarms. The big question now is how Israel failed to respond to this attack. Did the feared Iron Dome fail Israel again? Have the Houthis acquired a new weapon that can bypass Israeli air defenses?
