Following reports of Yahya Sinwar's possible death, Israelis are increasingly concerned about the fate of hostages held by Hamas in Gaza. The uncertainty surrounding Hamas' leadership has heightened fears over the safety and well-being of the captives.

Israel-Hamas War: Who Is Yahya Sinwar, Hamas Chief Killed In Gaza Strike?

Amid reports of the killing of Hamas chief Yahya Sinwar in the recent attack in Gaza, the Hostage Families Forum called on the Israeli government to leverage Sinwar's likely killing to secure an immediate hostage deal.

The Forum appreciated the "achievement" and expressed concerns for the 101 hostages that have been held captive by Hamas in Gaza.

“Along with the appreciation for the significant achievement [of Sinwar’s apparent killing], the families of the hostages express grave concern for the fate of the 101 hostages who are still being held captive by Hamas in Gaza and demand that [the government] leverage the military achievement to secure an immediate deal to bring about their return,” the Forum said in a statement.

“The elimination of Sinwar is an important milestone on the way to the real victory, which will only be achieved with the return of the 101 abductees,” the statement added.

They stressed that for over a year now, the Israeli government has not been able to leverage the unprecedented security achievements in the fighting in Gaza to bring the hostages back.

In the context of the ongoing Israel-Hamas war, the U.S. has stated that it is actively ensuring that Israel does not cut off essential supplies to North Gaza. This announcement comes amid growing concerns over the humanitarian situation in the region, where civilians are facing dire shortages of food, water, and medical supplies. The U.S. is working through the United Nations Security Council to advocate for measures that would allow aid to reach affected populations while addressing security concerns. This effort reflects the balancing act the U.S. is attempting to achieve between supporting Israel and responding to international calls for humanitarian assistance.

Iran increased cyberattacks on Israel after Gaza war broke out: Report

Israel is facing a shortage of rocket and missile interceptors as its air defence apparatus feels the heat of yearlong war in Gaza and Lebanon, according to a report in FT. As the conflict with Iran escalates, Tel Aviv stares at a shortage of munitions that could potentially put the lives of 10 million Israelis at risk.

The report, citing experts and former military officials, stated that if Iran was to launch an all-out war right now, Israel would be stretched thin in the air defence department.

“Israel’s munitions issue is serious. If Iran responds to an Israel attack, and Hezbollah joins in too, Israel’s air defences will be stretched," Dana Stroul, an ex-US defence official, was quoted as saying.

What is Israel's defence system?

Currently, Israel employs a multi-layered air-defence system that includes the ever-reliable Iron Dome, used to shoot short-range missiles; David's Sling, used to intercept medium-range missiles and the Arrow system, designed to handle long-range ballistic missiles.

When working in tandem, Israel's air defence system is arguably the best in the world. However, the cost of employing such a sophisticated system runs irrationally high as well. With the enemies at the door and firing projectiles almost every day for a year, the supply chain has been unable to keep up, the report stated.

Projectiles fired at Israel

Since the October 7 attack last year, Gaza-based militant outfit, Hamas, has launched over 20,000 rockets and missiles. Meanwhile, Iran has unleashed two heavy missile attacks involving hundreds of ballistic missiles in April and October - pushing Israel to the very edge of its capabilities.

Despite the onslaught, ex-IDF general Assaf Orion believes that Israel has not been tested fully as Hezbollah is yet to unleash its full capability.

“It has only been firing at around a tenth of its estimated prewar launching capacity, a few hundred rockets a day instead of as many as 2,000,” said Orion.

US to Israel's rescue?

As Israel struggles, the US has promised to send the Terminal High Altitude Area Defence missile system (THAAD) as well as 100 troops to engage the non-state actors in the war.

The THAAD is a storied missile defence system known for its ability to intercept ballistic missiles. It will boost the already dominant Iron Dome missile defence system of Israel.

It is an integrated air and missile defence system built for the US Army by Lockheed Martin, which describes THAAD as a 'highly effective, combat-proven defence against short, medium and intermediate-range ballistic missile threats'.

Israel's air defence system facing shortage of munitions as war drags on: Report

Conflict-ravaged Gaza appears to be facing the worst restrictions on aid since the Israel-Hams war there began over a year ago, the UN said on Tuesday, lamenting the devastating impact, especially, on children.

"Day after day, the situation for children becomes worse than the day before," said James Elder, spokesman for the UN children's agency UNICEF.

Vast areas of Gaza have been devastated by Israel's retaliatory assault on the territory after the October 7 Hamas attack last year that sparked the war.

And Israel has been intensifying operations in the north of the besieged Palestinian territory, where the UN has warned hundreds of thousands of people are trapped.

Despite a desperate need to increase the amount of aid going in, Elder lamented that aid access was worsening.

"August was the lowest amount of humanitarian aid that came into the Gaza Strip of any full month since the war broke out," he said, adding that there had been "several days in the last week (where) no commercial trucks whatsoever were allowed to come in".

"We see now what are probably the worst restrictions we've seen on humanitarian aid, ever."

Earlier in the year, amid warnings that the UN could declare a full-fledged famine in Gaza, Elder said there had been "a real push to have new routes and access point open".

But now, "we have seen an absolute reversal of that", he warned, adding that since May, "we've seen consistent entry points blocked".

Northern Gaza, meanwhile, "hasn't had food, any food aid at all coming in all of October", he added.

The dire lack of aid, coupled with the relentless strikes and the fact that around 85 per cent of the Gaza Strip has been hit with some form of evacuation order, has made the territory "essentially unlivable", Elder said.

An Israeli airstrike killed at least 28 people and injured dozens in a school sheltering displaced families in the central Gaza Strip on Thursday (Oct 10), the Palestinian Red Crescent said.

More than 50 other people were injured in the strike at Rufaida al-Aslamia school, which the medical organisation said was close to its headquarters in the town of Deir al-Balah.

At least 45 people were killed in Israeli military strikes on Gaza in the past 24 hours, Palestinian medics said on Wednesday, as Israeli forces pressed on with a raid on the Jabalia refugee camp in the enclave's north.

The Israeli military says the raid, now in its fifth day, is intended to stop Hamas fighters staging further attacks from Jabalia and to prevent them regrouping.

It has repeatedly issued evacuation orders to residents of Jabalia and nearby areas, but Palestinian and UN officials say there are no safe places to flee to in the Gaza Strip.

The Palestinian Civil Emergency Service said it had received unconfirmed reports that dozens of Palestinians may have been killed in Jabalia and other areas of northern Gaza, but is unable to reach them because of Israeli bombardments.

"At least 400,000 people are trapped in the area," Philippe Lazzarini, the head of the UN aid agency for Palestinian refugees, UNRWA, posted on X on Wednesday.

"Recent evacuation orders from the Israeli Authorities are forcing people to flee again & again, especially from Jabalia Camp. Many are refusing because they know too well that no place anywhere in #Gaza is safe."

Israel's military, which is now also in conflict with Hezbollah in Lebanon, says Hamas militants use residential areas as cover in densely populated Gaza, including schools and hospitals. Hamas denies this.

Hamas exiled official Izzat El-Reshiq said in a statement Israel's escalation in northern Gaza aimed to punish residents for refusing to leave their homes.

Former US president Donald Trump’s recent claim over the besieged Gaza Strip has raised eyebrows, raising questions over his knowledge of West Asia. In an interview with radio host Hugh Hewitt, Trump claimed he has been to Gaza, which he said was ‘a rough place.’ The Republican leader said he travelled to Gaza “before all of the attacks and before the back and forth what’s happened over the last couple of years”, despite a lack of evidence corroborating the same.

More than 41,000 people have died in Israeli strikes on the Palestinian territory and buildings have been reduced to rubble following Hamas’ Oct 7 assault on innocent Israeli citizens last year.

Hezbollah deputy leader Naim Qassem said in comments broadcast on Tuesday that his movement supports efforts to reach a ceasefire for Lebanon, but for the first time omitted any mention of a Gaza truce deal as a pre-condition to halting the group's fire on Israel.

Qassem said Hezbollah supported efforts by Speaker of Parliament Nabih Berri, a Hezbollah ally, to secure a halt to the fighting, which has escalated in recent weeks with Israeli ground incursions and the killing of some of Hezbollah's top leaders, including Secretary General Sayyed Hassan Nasrallah.

"We support the political activity being led by Berri under the title of a ceasefire," Qassem said in a 30-minute televised address.

"In any case, after the issue of a ceasefire takes shape, and once diplomacy can achieve it, all of the other details can be discussed and decisions can be taken," he said. "If the enemy (Israel) continues its war, then the battlefield will decide."

Hezbollah began launching missiles at Israel a year ago in support of its ally Hamas, which is at war with Israel following the Hamas-led attack on southern Israel on Oct. 7, 2023.

Hezbollah's top leaders have repeatedly stated over the last year that the group will not stop its fire until a Gaza ceasefire is reached, but Qassem's address appeared to mark a departure from that policy.

Israeli strikes have hit the group's stronghold in Beirut's southern suburbs on a nightly basis, and ground incursions expanded on Tuesday to additional parts of Lebanon's southern border with Israel.

Israel-Hamas War: One Year After October 7, Gazans Long For Return To Normalcy

On October 7, Israel observed the anniversary of the tragic events with memorials and protests as tensions in the region remain high. While the nation reflects on the impact of past attacks, military operations continue in both Gaza and Lebanon, escalating concerns about regional stability. The day serves as a somber reminder of the ongoing conflict and its far-reaching consequences for the affected communities.

A woman kidnapped as a young girl at the age of 11 by ISIS terrorists and later held by Hamas for a decade has been rescued by Israeli forces in Gaza, officials said. The United States led a month-long operation to free the 21-year-old Yazidi woman.

Fawzia Amin Sido was freed earlier this week and was greeted by her emotional family as soon as she returned to her native Iraq.

“Fawzia, a Yazidi girl kidnapped by ISIS from Iraq and brought to Gaza at just 11 years old, has finally been rescued by the Israeli security forces,” tweeted David Saranga, the director of the digital diplomacy bureau at Israel’s foreign ministry.

“For years, she was held captive by a Palestinian Hamas-ISIS member. She has now been reunited with her family."

He added that "her story is a reminder of the brutality faced by Yazidi children, taken without a choice."

Notably, ISIS captured more than 6,000 Yazidis in 2014, with many of them being sold into sexual slavery and others trained as child soldiers.

Sido is said to be in good physical condition, although she is mentally traumatised after spending all these years in captivity, Iraqi officials said.

Yazidi communities across Iraq faced terror attacks by Islamic State jihadists in 2014 and this is when Sido was taken as a young girl from her family. She was quickly sold off before being trafficked to Gaza, where she spent the next 10 years in captivity.

Reports suggest that the Iraqi officials were in touch with the woman for several months before the rescue efforts were conducted this week. She had also given her information to US officials.

Iraqi officials further informed that efforts to rescue her had been on for months. However, the ongoing Israel-Hamas war in Gaza hampered the plans and they faced failure on several occasions over the past four months.

No details about the rescue operation have been revealed, although a State Department spokesperson said that Sido’s captor was recently killed, and this led her to seek repatriation.

Of the more than 6,000 Yazidis captured in 2014, 2,600 remain missing with most of them feared dead. Around 3,500 have been rescued or freed.

Girl taken as ISIS slave at age 11, held captive for 10 years by Hamas, is rescued from Gaza

Israeli military strikes across the Gaza Strip killed at least 29 Palestinians on Friday, medics said, and sirens blared in southern Israel in response to renewed rocket fire from militants in the Palestinian enclave.

The new rocket salvoes indicated that Hamas-led militant factions in Gaza are still able to fire projectiles into Israel despite a year-long Israeli aerial and ground offensive that has turned wide areas of the enclave into wasteland.

On Friday, the Israeli military said sirens sounded in southern Israel for the first time in around two months.

"Almost a year after October 7, Hamas is still threatening our civilians with their terrorism and we will continue operating against them," it added, referring to the anniversary of Hamas' cross-border attack that touched off the Gaza war.

In Gaza City in north Gaza, Palestinian health officials said one Israeli aerial strike on a house killed at least seven people. Four people including two women and a baby were killed in the bombing of a home in the southern city of Khan Younis.

The rest were killed in airstrikes on several areas across the densely populated coastal enclave. Residents said Israeli forces operating in Gaza City's Zeitoun suburb and Rafah, near the southern border with Egypt, blew up clusters of homes.

Israel's military says Hamas combatants use crowded, built-up residential neighbourhoods as cover. Hamas denies this.

Israel media, reporting on the rocket fire, said one rocket was intercepted by air defence and another crashed in an open area. There were no reports of casualties or notable damage.

Palestinians in Gaza will mark the first anniversary of the war next week with little hope of an end to the fighting in the foreseeable future, even as Israel pursues a new ground incursion into Lebanon against Hamas' major Iranian-backed ally Hezbollah.

Hezbollah began firing rockets into northern Israel almost a year ago in support of Hamas after the Palestinian Islamist movement staged the deadliest assault in Israel's history on October 7, 2023.

The attack, in which Israel says 1,200 people were killed and over 250 taken hostage, ignited the war that has devastated Gaza, displacing most of its 2.3 million population and killing over 41,800 people, according to Gaza health authorities.

International diplomacy led by the United States has so far failed to clinch a ceasefire deal in Gaza. Hamas wants an agreement that ends the war while Israel says fighting can only end when Hamas is eradicated.
