In Gaza's only boxing club for girls, 15-year-old Farah Abu Al-Qomsan is practising her moves, trading jabs and punches with the other girls training with coach Osama Ayoub at the Palestine Boxing Centre.

Since taking to the sport at the age of nine, Farah has found a release from the daily stresses of life in Gaza, a narrow coastal strip where some 2.3 million Palestinians live blockaded by both Israel and neighbouring Egypt.

"We used to train in a small garage. Now we train according to the full rules and release bad energy," the 15-year-old girl, at the territory's first women-only boxing center.

Six years ago, Ayoub, started with two girls. As more joined, they moved out of the garage and began training on the beach or in rented spaces before moving into the new club building.

"The girls are ready. I trained them hard for five years," said Ayoub. "We are setting an example."

Now around 40 girls train in the centre with its full-size boxing ring, training equipment and posters of boxing heroes such as Mike Tyson on the walls, defying expectations in a region where boxing has traditionally been a sport for men.

"Some people used to tell me 'Why boxing, what are you going to benefit from it, go and learn something girly'," Farah said.

"I benefit a lot from boxing and today my ambition is to represent my Palestinian people and take part in world championships."

Israel retaliates, carries out overnight air strikes against Hamas in Gaza Strip

The United Nations Relief and Works Agency (UNRWA) for Palestine Refugees in the Near East discovered a tunnel was discovered under a United Nations school in Gaza. UNRWA officials said that a "man-made cavity" was detected under the school grounds after which the area was sectioned off and the tunnel was sealed. Gaza is a Palestinian region ruled by the Hamas and is home to a network of tunnels, some of which have been used in previous conflicts with Israel, the UN agency reported on Thursday.

"The agency protested strongly to the relevant authorities in Gaza to express outrage and condemnation of the presence of such a structure underneath one of its installations," the UN agency for Palestinian refugees said in a statement.

According to UNRWA, the "cavity" amounted to "a major breach of the agency's neutrality and a breach of international law" and exposed children and UN personnel to "grave security and safety hazards." As per the Israeli army, the tunnel was really built by insurgents in Gaza.

"Rain likely created a hole in the ground that revealed the structure of a terrorist tunnel next to a UNRWA school in Gaza," an Israeli military source told AFP on condition of anonymity.

A Palestinian farmer and his son over the course of three months excavated an ornate Byzantine-era mosaic. The discovery of the mosaic has reportedly sent a wave of excitement among archaeologists as it is one of the greatest archaeological treasures ever found in Gaza.

It was last spring when a Palestinian farmer in the midst of planting a new olive tree hit a hard object with his shovel, after which he called his son; together they slowly excavated the mosaic. However, the owner of the land has reportedly chosen to remain anonymous, before any official announcement, he has also covered the unearthed mosaic with tin sheets and hopes to receive some compensation for the protection of the discovery on his property.

Due to this discovery, many have also called for better protection of the antiquities in Gaza, voicing their concerns regarding the fragile collection of sites which is under threat because of lack of awareness and resources, as well as the constant threat of a conflict between Israel and local Palestinian militants. The Hamas-run department of antiquities has called it “a big archaeological discovery”, but is yet to release an official statement.

In an interview, René Elter, an archaeologist from the French Biblical and Archaeological School of Jerusalem, said, “These are the most beautiful mosaic floors discovered in Gaza, both in terms of the quality of the graphic representation and the complexity of the geometry.” He added, “Never have mosaic floors of this finesse, this precision in the graphics and richness of the colors been discovered in the Gaza Strip.”

According to Elter, the ornate mosaic dates back to somewhere between the 5th and 7th centuries, however, his estimation is based on a series of photos and videos taken by local research partners and while he has conducted research on the Gaza Strip before, he has not personally visited the site. He has also expressed concern that such a discovery undertaken by inexperienced people could damage the site.

Historically, the Gaza Strip, a coastal enclave situated between Israel and Egypt was a trade route which witnessed several ancient civilizations from the Bronze Age to the Islamic and Ottoman eras. Reports suggest that these treasures left behind by these civilizations are rarely protected and have been subjected to looting, damage, and even have been destroyed by development projects or regional conflict.

According to the people with knowledge of the matter, the mosaic is spread over about 23 square meters and the three dug-out spots on the 500 square meters patch of land, reveal parts of the mosaic. While the largest holes dug up are about 2 meters by 3 meters and marked with at least 17 drawings of animals, the other two show tiles that have intricate patterns on them.

The mosaic was unearthed just a kilometer from the Israeli border, the floor consists of 17 iconographies of beasts and birds which were surprisingly well-preserved and their colours remain bright. However, Elter has expressed concern about the discovery due to its close approximation to the Israeli separation fence saying that it is in “immediate danger”. He added, “It is imperative to quickly organize an emergency rescue intervention.”

Pyramids are a wonder of the ancient world that has stood test of time and continues to enthrall millions across the world. Construction of pyramids must indeed have been a great endevour. Each of the main three pyramids on the outskirts of modern Cairo has been made of millions of blocks of stone, and each weighed between 2.5 and 15 tonnes.

Considering the pyramids were built more than four thousand years ago, the exact technique of construction remains a mystery and modern-day equipment was not available at the time.

It is believed that ancient Egyptians ferried the huge stone blocks on the Nile river. But today, the Nile can be found about four miles away from the pyramids. It appears to be an impossible job to take a tonne-heavy stone across the distance.

But scientists have now said that a stable branch of the Nile flowed near pyramids. The branch is no longer present today.

To detemine whether the Nile flowed very close to the pyramids, the researchers dug holes in the desert around the pyramids and searched for pollens of plants that thrived in an aquatic environment.

"It was impossible to build the pyramids here without this branch of the Nile," study author and geographer Hader Sheesh said, as quoted by The New York Times.

Findings of this research have been published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences.

In a statement, the president claimed that over the previous three days, Washington had coordinated with representatives of the Jewish state, the Palestinian Authority, and numerous nations in the area to "promote a fast resolution to the crisis."

"We also call on all parties to fully implement the ceasefire, and to ensure fuel and humanitarian supplies are flowing into Gaza as the fighting subsides," Biden added.

The president also condemned the harm and deaths of innocent civilians in Gaza, but he made no mention of the perpetrators. At least 44 Palestinians have died as a result of the violence, including 15 children.

"The reports of civilian casualties in Gaza are a tragedy, whether by Israeli strikes against Islamic Jihad positions or the dozens of Islamic Jihad rockets that reportedly fell inside Gaza," Biden said.

Israel has been heavily shelling Islamic Jihad strongholds in Gaza since last Friday, and the terrorists have responded by launching hundreds of missiles.

While Israelis have been forced to take cover from a barrage of rockets, buildings in Gaza have been reduced to rubble.

"As I made clear during my recent trip to Israel and the West Bank, Israelis and Palestinians both deserve to live safely and securely and to enjoy equal measures of freedom, prosperity, and democracy," added Biden, who visited the region last month.
