<a href="https://www.wionews.com/sports/uefa-tells-teams-not-to-play-where-women-cant-watch-251956">UEFA</a> is to introduce a new-look playoff system for its 2022 World Cup qualifying competition which will avoid the need to compare results of teams in different groups.

UEFA said the 55 teams, who will be battling for 13 places at the tournament in Qatar, will be divided into 10 groups.

The 10 group winners will qualify directly for the World Cup while the runners-up will go into the playoffs along with two more teams from the 2020-21 <a href="https://www.wionews.com/sports/us-forward-altidore-ruled-out-of-nations-league-matches-254642">Nations League</a>.

Those 12 teams will then be divided into three paths, with a one-leg semi-final and a one-leg final in each path to decide the remaining three European finalists.

In the qualifiers for the 2018 World Cup, there were nine groups where the winners qualified directly and the eight best runners-up went into four two-leg playoffs.

Football: UEFA announces new playoff system for 2022 World Cup qualifiers

Jose Mourinho's return to Old Trafford ended in defeat as Marcus Rashford scored twice for Manchester United in a deserved 2-1 Premier League victory over Tottenham Hotspur on Wednesday.

<a href="https://www.wionews.com/sports/football-tottenham-hotspur-name-mourinho-as-manager-263339">Mourinho</a> was sacked as United manager almost a year ago and this was his first defeat in four games since taking over from Mauricio Pochettino at Spurs last month.

After their worst start to a season since 1988, United fans were justified in viewing Mourinho's return with apprehension.

But a hugely encouraging night for United ended with the Stretford End roaring their approval of his successor <a href="https://www.wionews.com/sports/more-frustration-for-solskjaer-as-manchester-united-held-by-villa-265635">Ole Gunnar Solskjaer</a> after an impressive performance by his team lifted them to sixth in the table.

Rashford put United ahead in the seventh minute but a piece of technical brilliance from Dele Alli brought Spurs level, only for a 49th-minute Rashford penalty to secure the three points for the hosts.

The England striker was at his very best, strutting around the frontline and terrifying the Spurs defence but Solskjaer will also be delighted with a hugely improved performance from oft-criticised Brazilian midfielder Fred.

The opener was scored when Spurs defender Davinson Sanchez came off second best in a tussle with Jesse Lingard and the ball fell to Rashford, who confidently unleashed a low drive which rattled in off the post.

Rashford went close again with an 18th-minute free kick which curled past Paulo Gazzaniga’s right-hand post.

Argentine keeper Gazzaniga was soon in action again to keep out a low shot from Greenwood – after Daniel James again caused problems for Jan Vertonghen.

Rashford was playing with real swagger and he went close to a second in the 25th minute with a perfectly struck, dipping drive which Gazzaniga brilliantly tipped on to the bar.

With Scott McTominay a powerful presence, United were dominating midfield and continued to threaten the Spurs goal, Rashford floating a shot just wide and Lingard going close.

But a moment of brilliance at the other end brought <a href="https://www.wionews.com/sports/jose-mourinho-makes-instant-impact-as-tottenham-defeat-west-ham-264133">Tottenham</a> level six minutes before the break.

Serge Aurier's shot was saved by the legs of David De Gea, the ball looped high in the air and Alli produced a remarkable piece of skill to bring the ball down and twist past Fred and Ashley Young before finishing with aplomb.

After all their pressure it was tough on United to go in at the interval without a lead but they were soon to restore their advantage.

Cutting in from the left, Rashford jinked past Aurier, burst into the box and was tripped by Moussa Sissoko, earning a penalty which he took and, from a short run-up, slotted home.

Gazzaniga saved Spurs again with a fine diving stop from James and when Mourinho introduced Christian Eriksen to the midfield Spurs threatened more, but there was real grit about United.

Alli tested De Gea with a low shot in stoppage time but the night belonged to Rashford and a young United side who got the perfect boost before Saturday's trip to the Etihad Stadium for the Manchester derby.

"This is the hardest we've had to work to get a result," Rashford said.

"The position we're in now, we want these games. We want to show people we can play against top teams."

Premier League: Rashford double as United spoil Mourinho's return

<a href="https://www.wionews.com/sports/liverpool-draw-everton-in-fa-cup-third-round-265919">Liverpool</a>'s bandwagon rolled on as they crushed Merseyside rivals Everton 5-2 at Anfield but Leicester City's pursuit continued with a seventh successive <a href="https://www.wionews.com/sports/premier-league-jesus-double-gives-manchester-city-much-needed-win-at-burnley-266167">Premier League</a> victory to stay eight points behind on Wednesday.

Even with strikers Mo Salah and Roberto Firmino warming the bench, Juergen Klopp's side had far too much firepower with Divock Origi scoring twice as Liverpool set a new club record of 32 league games undefeated.

While a first title for 30 years is beckoning Liverpool, pressure is piling up on Everton boss Marco Silva as his side dropped into the relegation zone, below Southampton who beat fellow strugglers Norwich City 2-1.

Jose Mourinho's return to Old Trafford was not a happy one as <a href="https://www.wionews.com/sports/im-a-better-coach-for-united-stint-jose-mourinho-266138">Manchester United</a> striker Marcus Rashford's double earned his side a 2-1 victory over Tottenham Hotspur.

Leicester beat bottom club Watford 2-0 as they equalled a club record winning streak dating back to 1963, Jamie Vardy and James Maddison scoring after the break to lift Brendan Rodgers's side three points above champions Manchester City.

"Seven wins on the spin in the Premier League is a great achievement, we have a winning mentality," Rodgers said. "We fight and work and see where it takes us."

Chelsea manager Frank Lampard got the better of former team mate John Terry, assistant manager at Aston Villa, as his side shrugged off back-to-back league defeats with a 2-1 victory to consolidate fourth spot.

Wolverhampton Wanderers are now unbeaten in 10 league games,&nbsp;their best run in the top flight for 40 years,&nbsp;as they cruised to a 2-0 victory over West Ham United.

Wolves jumped to fifth spot, six behind Chelsea.

With Adam Lallana also given a start as Klopp rotated his squad at the start of a hectic month, Liverpool underlined their depth as they blew Everton away in the highest-scoring Mersey derby since 1933.

A mesmerising attacking display saw them net four goals before halftime with Origi and Xherdan Shaqiri scoring to make the most of rare starts. Sadio Mane was also on target although Everton played their part with Michael Keane and Richarlison keeping them in the contest.

A calmer second half brought only a late goal for Georginio Wijnaldum as Liverpool moved to 43 points from 15 games, eight ahead of Leicester and 11 clear of champions Manchester City.

"The players coming in were fantastic, it's good to see, we will need everyone in this long season," Liverpool defender Virgil van Dijk said.

"We have to use everyone and they all stepped up."

Mourinho, sacked a year ago by Manchester United, returned to the north west in good heart after his first three games for Tottenham all brought victories while his United successor <a href="https://www.wionews.com/sports/more-frustration-for-solskjaer-as-manchester-united-held-by-villa-265635">Ole Gunnar Solskjaer</a> was under pressure after the Reds' worst start to a season since 1988.

United produced the kind of vibrant display that has been a rarity this season and Rashford was superb. He opened the scoring early and tucked away a penalty in the second half after Dele Alli had equalised for Tottenham.

It was a dominant display by United who moved above Tottenham into sixth spot with 21 points from 15 games.

"It was the best performance Marcus Rashford has had under me," Solskjaer said of the young England striker. "It's like he was back on the playground."

Mourinho, given a friendly welcome, said his side had started too slowly.

"We need to win more duels, we need to start the game with more intensity," the Portuguese said. "We need to make the opponent feel what United made us feel."

Tammy Abraham returned for Chelsea after injury and headed the opening goal against Villa. Trezeguet bundled in a Villa equaliser but Mason Mount's thumping volley sealed victory.

Premier League: Liverpool enjoy derby demolition as it sets new club record, Leicester still chasing

A superb <a href="https://www.wionews.com/sports/champions-league-mbappe-stars-as-psg-snatch-draw-against-real-madrid-264752">Kylian Mbappe</a> goal and a Neymar penalty helped Paris St Germain restore a five-point lead atop the Ligue 1 standings with a 2-0 home win over Nantes on Wednesday.

France striker Mbappe found the back of the net with a jaw-dropping backheel finish early in the second half and Neymar doubled the tally in the closing stages to put&nbsp;PSG&nbsp;on 36 points from 15 games.

Second-placed Marseille, who have played one game more, had narrowed the gap to two points with a 2-0 victory at Angers on Tuesday.

"It's not easy to beat Nantes they are very compact. We tried to play fast but we lost too many balls," said&nbsp;PSG&nbsp;midfielder Marquinhos.

Nantes dropped to ninth in the table on 23 points from 16 games.

At the Parc des Princes, coach Thomas Tuchel left Mauro Icardi on the substitutes' bench with Mbappe starting up front alongside Angel Di Maria and Neymar.

The Brazilian thought he had opened the scoring shortly before halftime but his effort was ruled out by the <a href="https://www.wionews.com/sports/football-rule-makers-look-at-ways-of-providing-more-information-about-var-decisions-266170">VAR</a> because of a Julian Draxler foul in the area.

Mbappe went close four minutes into the second half but Alban Lafont parried away the France international's powerful angled shot.

Mbappe, however, put the hosts ahead in the 52nd minute with a gorgeous backheel from Di Maria's whipped pass after the Argentine had been played through on the right flank by Neymar.

Neymar converted a penalty six minutes from fulltime after Lafont had brought down Icardi in the area following a poor header back from defender Nicolas Pallois.

Keylor Navas made a key save to deny Pallois in stoppage time, helping secure a ninth clean sheet in nine league victories for&nbsp;PSG&nbsp;at home this season.

Elsewhere, St Etienne bounced back from their first defeat under Claude Puel with a 4-1 home victory against Nice thanks to a Denis Bouanga double.

The win lifted Les Verts, who were second from the bottom when Puel was appointed two months ago, up to fifth on 25 points.

"It was a perfect game which should boost our confidence," said Puel, who has secured 14 points in seven games for St Etienne.

Monaco's Wissam Ben Yedder scored an early penalty and set up Gelson Martins for the winner as they won 2-1 at bottom side Toulouse.

Ligue 1: Mbappe and Neymar on target as PSG sink Nantes

Sweden footballer <a href="https://www.wionews.com/sports/football-ac-milan-offer-ibrahimovic-six-month-deal-reports-263650">Zlatan Ibrahimovic</a> has fuelled speculation that he is set to return to Italy, where he has played for AC Milan, Inter Milan and Juventus, by saying in an interview: "see you soon in Italy".

The 38-year-old striker confirmed his departure from Los Angeles Galaxy last month following the club's elimination from the Major League Soccer playoffs.

"I'll join a club which must get back to winning, which must renew its history and is in search of a battle against everyone and everything," Ibrahimovic&nbsp;told GQ Italia.

"That is the only way I'll be able to find the necessary motivation to surprise you again.&nbsp;

"It's not just about choosing a team, as there are other factors that need to line up, including in the interests of my family.

"I'll see you in Italy soon."

According to reports in Italy, Ibrahimovic has been offered a six-month deal to come to the aid of struggling former giants AC Milan, who are 11th in the <a href="https://www.wionews.com/sports/cristiano-ronaldo-skips-ballon-dor-to-receive-serie-a-player-of-the-year-award-in-italy-266021">Serie A</a> table.

Napoli are also a possible destination as last season's runners-up sit seventh, after a run of six league games without a win.

"I love to make the difference," he added. "I don't just want to do one or two things well, I want to do all of it."

Ibrahimovic played for two seasons between 2010 and 2012 with AC Milan, helping them to their last Serie A title, and scoring 42 goals in 61 league appearances.

He also won three league titles with Inter Milan, and two with <a href="https://www.wionews.com/sports/martinez-fires-inter-top-of-serie-a-as-juventus-slip-up-265660">Juventus</a>, which were both revoked following the 'Calciopoli' match-fixing scandal.

'See you soon in Italy': Ibrahimovic fuels talk of Serie A return

Soccer's rule-making body IFAB is to look at ways of providing more information during matches about <a href="https://www.wionews.com/sports/english-premier-league-promises-to-improve-and-speed-up-var-use-262258">Video Assistant Referee</a> (VAR) decisions, it said following a meeting on Tuesday.

The use of VAR, match officials who use technology to review certain decisions made by the referee, has been surrounded by <a href="https://www.wionews.com/sports/var-system-has-made-four-errors-in-premier-league-referees-chief-249386">controversy</a> over the last few months.

Some fans say the system goes far beyond its original remit, which involved only reviewing the most glaring mistakes,&nbsp;and that decisions are <a href="https://www.wionews.com/sports/copa-america-organisers-satisfied-with-use-of-var-despite-lengthy-delays-230565">taking too long</a>.

The International Football Association Board (IFAB) said in a statement that its members had agreed to "explore different communication options to improve the understanding of the decision-making process".

It recognised that there was a "growing demand for more immediate information about the referee’s final decisions after a VAR-review."

In some leagues where VAR is used, screens in the stadium indicate that a VAR review is taking place and then relay the decision but with only minimal information such as "No goal".

There have been several cases where a goal has been officially announced in the stadium, the players have celebrated and the ball is back in the centre circle ready for kickoff only for a VAR review to take place.

Napoli coach Carlo Ancelotti complained recently that it was often difficult to know whether the VAR or the pitch referee was in charge of a match.

IFAB said the meeting received "positive feedback" on the changes to the laws, including a handball rule, which were introduced in June, even though, like VAR, this has been subject to much criticism.

It also agreed to set up an "expert group" to look into whether the rules need to be changed to allow for better treatment for players who suffer concussion.

The group will look a new ways of assessing concussion during a match and how to deal with it, "taking into consideration all potential resulting consequences, with player safety at the forefront".

At present, referees must stop the match in cases of suspected concussion to allow the examination of the injured player who can only return to the game with permission from the team doctor.

However, world players' union FIFPro says this does not go far enough. It wants players to be looked at by a neutral doctor and temporary substitutions to be allowed for up to 10 minutes while the examination takes place.

IFAB's annual general meeting on February&nbsp;29 will decide which proposals will be incorporated into the rules.

Football: Rule-makers look at ways of providing more information about VAR decisions

<a href="https://www.wionews.com/sports/premier-league-liverpool-extend-lead-at-top-as-manchester-city-chelsea-falter-265516">Manchester City</a>'s Gabriel Jesus struck twice and Rodri scored a screamer in a 4-1 win at Burnley on Tuesday as the champions showed signs they may be able to keep the Premier League title race alive.

The victory takes <a href="https://www.wionews.com/sports/guardiola-rules-out-manchester-city-january-spree-265868">Pep Guardiola</a>'s side, who had drawn at Newcastle United on Saturday, into provisional second spot and back within eight points of leaders Liverpool ahead of the Merseyside derby with Everton at Anfield on Wednesday.

Jesus opened the scoring in the 24th minute and doubled City’s advantage five minutes after the break before a spectacular drive from Rodri and a low drilled shot from substitute Riyad Mahrez made it four.

A late consolation from Burnley substitute Robbie Brady will have annoyed Guardiola, whose side have now gone eight games in all competitions without a clean sheet but, that aside, this was back to business for City.

The Spaniard, though, dismissed talk of a title race comeback.

"For the distance we have with <a href="https://www.wionews.com/sports/liverpool-draw-everton-in-fa-cup-third-round-265919">Liverpool</a> it would be crazy to think about the title, we have to think about the (weekend Manchester) derby, the other competitions, and take this rhythm," he told the post-match news conference.

The way the City players celebrated the win showed they knew they could ill-afford another slip-up after being held at Newcastle United on Saturday.

In recent weeks City have looked well below the standards set in their two straight title campaigns and this season they had already dropped 13 points in their 14 games, only three short of their total for the whole of the last campaign.

With only one win in their last five games in all competitions, the pressure on City was real but the gap in quality between the elite clubs and the tightly-packed middle ranks of the Premier League was soon evident.

Burnley manager Sean Dyche switched from his usual 4-4-2 to a five-man midfield with Danny Drinkwater, on loan from Chelsea, making his first Premier League appearance in 21 months, but neither he nor his team mates troubled the champions.

City began to move the ball around with the kind of confidence and precision that has been their hallmark under Guardiola and they were soon ahead.

The breakthrough came after a swift exchange of passes ended with David Silva threading the ball to Jesus who, filling in for the injured Sergio Aguero, curled a shot into the far corner.

The lead could have been doubled two minutes before the interval when, after rare Burnley pressure, City broke and the counter ended with a Bernardo Silva drive which keeper Nick Pope saved superbly with his outstretched leg.

The second goal came when Bernardo Silva curled a probing cross towards the back post and Jesus reacted quickly to get in front of his marker Phil Bardsley and volley home.

Jesus, who had not scored in his previous 10 games for club or country, was buzzing and went close to a third with a burst of pace and another shot that fizzed just wide of the far post.

A blocked shot from David Silva then fell to Rodri on the edge of the box and the Spaniard blasted a thundering, unstoppable drive past Pope to make it three in the 68th minute.

Mahrez, given acres of space, got the fourth goal three minutes from the end with a low shot from the edge of the box before Brady gave the muted home crowd some cheer in the cold.

"We played with an incredible amount of passes and we needed that," said Guardiola. "Here at Burnley it is not easy. We conceded one chance in the first half but we played in a clever way and it is a good performance," he added.

Manchester City's Gabriel Jesus struck twice and Rodri scored a screamer in a 4-1 win at Burnley on Tuesday as the champions showed signs they may be able to keep the Premier League title race alive. The victory takes Pep Guardiola's side, who had drawn at Newcastle United on Saturday, into provisional second spot and back within eight points of leaders Liverpool ahead of the Merseyside derby with Everton at Anfield on Wednesday. "For the distance we have with Liverpool it would be crazy to think about the title, we have to think about the (weekend Manchester) derby, the other competitions, and take this rhythm," he told the post-match news conference. <a href="https://www.wionews.com/sports/football-guardiola-is-the-best-manager-in-the-world-juergen-klopp-260679">Pep Guardiola</a> says he will not be splashing out in January to revive Manchester City's flagging <a href="https://www.wionews.com/sports/premier-league-liverpool-extend-lead-at-top-as-manchester-city-chelsea-falter-265516">Premier League</a> title fortunes despite the yawning gap to leaders Liverpool.

The champions, in third place and trailing Jurgen Klopp's men by 11 points after 14 matches, visit Burnley on Tuesday.

City have gone seven games without a clean sheet, which Guardiola said was not "good enough" and the club have been linked with Leicester City defender Caglar Soyuncu.

But he played down the idea of buying a centre-back when the transfer window re-opens next month.

Instead he will keep his faith in Fernandinho and await the return of Aymeric Laporte after a lengthy absence with a knee injury.

Asked if City's transfer strategy had changed, Guardiola said: "No. I don't want any players in January.

"If we cannot do it in summer, we cannot do in January. When they come for an incredible opportunity in January for the next four, five, six years, maybe we could think about it, but that is not possible.

"Normally the players we could think it would be interesting to add something for our squad, they are not going to sell."

Since losing Laporte in August, and following the exit of captain Vincent Kompany, Guardiola has deployed Fernandinho, usually a holding midfielder, in defence.

And he will turn to the Brazilian again at Turf Moor despite the direct approach of the hosts and aerial and physical threat of Burnley forward pair Ashley Barnes and Chris Wood.

"Fernandinho is not the reason why we win or lose. When we beat <a href="https://www.wionews.com/sports/chelsea-thwarted-by-valencia-in-champions-league-thriller-264990">Chelsea</a>, everyone said how fantastic Fernandinho was," said Guardiola.

"When we don't win it's because of Fernandinho. It will be my decision. I like him in that position because of the build-up for the fast, for the long balls, many things."

City will be without the suspended Ilkay Gundogan in midfield and striker Sergio Aguero, the matchwinner at Burnley last season, with a thigh injury that will also rule him out of Saturday's Manchester derby.

City have won just one of their past five games in all competitions but England defender John Stones believes leaders <a href="https://www.wionews.com/sports/champions-league-liverpool-and-napoli-left-with-work-to-do-after-anfield-draw-264987">Liverpool</a> will now face added pressure to stay at the top.

"It's very difficult to be out in front and you can sometimes be complacent and not do things you should do. That's when you can slip up," he said.

"We put a healthy pressure on our shoulders to say we can achieve this, and we can claw back points and close the gap. We're still the champions and we should have that healthy arrogance about it."

Liverpool draw Everton in FA Cup third round

Lautaro Martinez's first-half brace sent Inter Milan top of Serie A on Sunday with a 2-1 win over SPAL after champions <a href="https://www.wionews.com/sports/juventus-inter-milan-return-to-serie-a-duel-as-napoli-try-to-snap-winless-run-265161">Juventus</a> were held at home by Sassuolo.

"We didn't use our heads," lamented Juventus boss Maurizio Sarri after his side dropped their first points at home this season.

<a href="https://www.wionews.com/sports/cristiano-ronaldo-back-against-favourite-enemy-atletico-264553">Cristiano Ronaldo</a> scored from the spot to rescue a 2-2 draw but Juventus slipped one point behind Antonio Conte's Inter.

Argentinian Martinez put Inter ahead on 16 minutes at the San Siro, and then headed in Antonio Candreva's cross to score his eighth league goal this season.

Mattia Valoti pulled a goal back, but second-from-bottom SPAL fell to their ninth defeat of the campaign.

Conte has guided Chinese-owned Inter to 12 victories in 14 league games for the first time, and they reclaimed the top spot which they had previously held until their 2-1 defeat by Juventus on October 6.

"When a team like Juventus drops points, you need to make sure that you make the most of that," said former Juve coach Conte.

In Turin, Leonardo Bonucci struck early for the eight-time reigning champions but Ivorian Jeremie Boga and Francesco Caputo hit back for Sassuolo before Ronaldo's intervention.

Sassuolo, in 12th, claimed their first ever point at Juventus, and held Sarri's unbeaten champions to their third draw this season.

"We got into trouble on our own, we didn't use our heads in the first half, as the goals conceded show," said Sarri.

"But we were coming off two games in which we used up a lot of energy against Atalanta and Atletico Madrid. We woke up after going behind."

Veteran Gianluigi Buffon endured a nightmare in the Juventus goal.

The 41-year-old was making just his fifth start this season, putting him two short of Paolo Maldini's record of 647 <a href="https://www.wionews.com/sports/serie-a-juventus-dybala-sinks-milan-as-angry-ronaldo-substituted-261314">Serie A</a> appearances.

Boga dinked the first Sassuolo goal on 22 minutes over the onrushing Buffon, who then fumbled in Caputo's second after the break following a mix-up between Juan Cuadrado and Matthijs de Ligt.

Napoli crisis intensifies&nbsp;

By contrast, 18-year-old Stefano Turati made an impressive debut in the Sassuolo goal, and pulled off a string of fine saves, denying a Ronaldo free-kick, Gonzalo Higuain and Paulo Dybala late on.

Ronaldo's penalty pulled the hosts level in the 68th minute after Filippo Romagna fouled substitute Dybala.

It was the Portuguese star's fifth Serie A goal this season, with the five-time Ballon d'Or winner also having an effort ruled out for offside.

"Ronaldo has regained stamina, the next step will be to recover brilliance, but the road is right," insisted Sarri.

Lazio consolidated third place,&nbsp;seven points behind Inter,&nbsp;with a 3-0 win over Udinese thanks to a double from Serie A top scorer Ciro Immobile, including one from the spot, to bring his tally to 17 goals this season, and a Luis Alberto penalty.

Roma moved up to fourth, two points behind their city rivals, after a 3-1 win at midtable Verona, ahead of Cagliari, who host Sampdoria on Monday.

Justin Kluivert score after 17 minutes in Verona with Diego Perotti converting a penalty just before the break, and Henrikh Mkhitaryan adding a third in injury time.

But Napoli's winless run stretched to eight games in all competitions with a 2-1 defeat at home by Bologna, leaving last season's runners-up in seventh.

Bologna got their first win since October 27 with coach Sinisa Mihajlovic back on the bench following a bone marrow transplant as he fights leukaemia.

Despite taking a point in their <a href="https://www.wionews.com/sports/champions-league-liverpool-and-napoli-left-with-work-to-do-after-anfield-draw-264987">Champions League game</a> at Liverpool in midweek Carlo Ancelotti's Napoli are five points off the top four.

"It's a very delicate time for us," said Ancelotti.

Fernando Llorente put Napoli ahead four minutes before half-time, but Dane Andreas Skov Olsen volleyed in an equaliser just before the hour with Nicola Sansone scoring the winner 10 minutes from time.

Llorente thought he had scored a 95th-minute leveller, but it was ruled offside by VAR.

AC Milan, struggling in 11th, got their first win in a month, 1-0 at Parma.

Martinez fires Inter top of Serie A as Juventus slip up

<a href="https://www.wionews.com/.../unai-emery-favourite-for-the-chop-as-premier- league-pressure-mounts-265152">Unai Emery</a> was sacked as Arsenal manager Friday after less than two years in charge and with the club without a win in seven games, their worst run since 1992.

The 48-year-old Spaniard was fired following the<a href="https://www.wionews.com/.../unai-emery-reaches-breaking-point-as-arsenal- crash-in-europa-league-265159"> 2-1 home defeat to Eintracht Frankfurt</a> in Thursday's Europa League match.

His assistant Freddie Ljungberg takes over as interim manager during the search for a permanent replacement.

Arsenal fans had demanded "decisive action" from directors with the club's present run of five draws and two defeats this season just one match off equalling George Graham's run of eight without a win in 1992.&nbsp;

Club directors responded by axing the man brought in 18 months ago to revive a club stagnating after two decades under Frenchman Arsene Wenger.

"We announce today that the decision has been taken to part company with our head coach Unai Emery and his coaching team," read the statement.

"We have asked Freddie Ljungberg to take responsibility for the first team as interim head coach.

"The search for a new head coach is underway and we will make a further announcement when that process is complete."

Among those in the mix for the permanent job include former Gunners star Mikel Arteta, Pep Guardiola's assistant at champions Manchester City, ex-Juventus handler Massimiliano Allegri and Wolves Portuguese manager Nuno Espirito Santo.

Arsenal's league form has fallen away badly with five Premier League matches without a win -- they are the only side in the top half of the table with a negative goal difference.

Emery's cause has not been helped by the stripping of the captaincy from fiery Swiss international Granit Xhaka after he swore at Gunners fans when being substituted against Crystal Palace last month.

And a potential saviour, Gunners record signing Pepe, has been a huge disappointment since his £72 million ($93 million) move from French Ligue 1 outfit Lille in the close season.&nbsp;

Emery's position had looked shaky enough when north London rivals Tottenham Hotspur sacked Mauricio Pochettino last week only months after taking them to the Champions League final.

The former Paris Saint Germain handler's first season ended in disappointment. Arsenal blew two chances for a return to the Champions League, winning just one of their last five games to finish fifth in the Premier League and then losing the Europa League final 4-1 to Chelsea.

"Our most sincere thanks go to Unai and his colleagues who were unrelenting in their efforts to get the club back to competing at the level we all expect and demand," read the club statement.

"We wish Unai and his team nothing but future success. The decision has been taken due to results and performances not being at the level required."

Unai Emery axed as Arsenal boss after worst run in decades

Tottenham Hotspur striker Harry Kane hopes the club's winning start under <a href="https://www.wionews.com/sports/football-tottenham-hotspur-name-mourinho-as-manager-263339">new manager Jose Mourinho</a> can help forge a strong relationship between the pair and lead to trophies.

Mourinho's first home game as Spurs boss suffered a shocking start, ending happily, though, as Kane scored a brace that helped his team come from behind to <a href="https://www.wionews.com/sports/champions-league-mourinho-masterstroke-pays-off-as-tottenham-spurs-hit-back-to-win-264816">beat Olympiakos</a> Piraeus 4-2 and reach the Champions League last 16 on Tuesday.

That win came after a 3-2 Premier League <a href="https://www.wionews.com/sports/jose-mourinho-makes-instant-impact-as-tottenham-defeat-west-ham-264133">victory at West Ham</a> United in the Portuguese manager's first match in charge following the sacking of Mauricio Pochettino last week.

"When you are winning, it definitely helps your relationship. Hopefully we can build a strong relationship," Kane told the British media.

"It's early days. We have a good relationship so far. We talk, we try and help the team ... Me being one of the leaders in the team he looks to me for feelings and advice on the team."

<a href="https://www.wionews.com/sports/football-mourinho-aiming-to-take-spurs-and-kane-to-the-next-level-263998">Kane</a> previously said Tottenham had found a "proven winner" in Mourinho as they bid to end an 11-year title drought.

The former Porto, Chelsea, Inter Milan, Real Madrid and Manchester United boss has claimed 25 major honours, but that record will be put to the test at Spurs, who have not won a title since the 2008 League Cup.

"We know we both want to win big competitions. That's the team's aim, my aim and the manager's aim. Hopefully I can help him do that this year and see where we can go," Kane said.

"He's had two games. So far it's been about trying to save energy, not trying to work too much with the players because of the games.

"But we obviously have a long season ahead so I'm sure we will get to know each other well over the next few weeks and implement what he wants on our team."

Tottenham, who are 10th in the <a href="https://www.wionews.com/sports/premier-league-manchester-united-denied-comeback-win-by-late-mcburnie-equaliser-264347">Premier League</a> with 17 points, host Bournemouth on Saturday.

"He's had two games. So far it's been about trying to save energy, not trying to work too much with the players because of the games. "But we obviously have a long season ahead so I'm sure we will get to know each other well over the next few weeks and implement what he wants on our team." Tottenham, who are 10th in the Premier League with 17 points, host Bournemouth on Saturday.

Returning Spain <a href="https://www.wionews.com/sports/football-spain-coach-moreno-to-be-replaced-by-luis-enrique-reports-263300">coach Luis&nbsp;Enrique</a>&nbsp;has said he decided to part ways with his former assistant coach and successor Robert Moreno because the coach wanted to take charge of the team at Euro 2020 before letting him return.

Luis&nbsp;<a href="https://www.wionews.com/sports/luis-enrique-resigns-as-spain-coach-and-is-replaced-by-robert-moreno-228796">Enrique&nbsp;resigned</a> from the role in June to spend more time with his daughter Xana after she was diagnosed with cancer, later passing away in August aged nine.

His long-time assistant Moreno succeeded him and helped Spain qualify for <a href="https://www.wionews.com/photos/euro-2020-qualifiers-with-20-out-of-24-berths-filled-england-france-italy-top-their-groups-263461">Euro 2020</a> as group winners but had an unceremonious end to his short time as coach and left the role after Spain's 5-0 win over Romania on Nov. 18.

Moreno declined to give a news conference after that match as confusion reigned but the following day it was confirmed Luis&nbsp;Enrique&nbsp;was to return as the team's head coach.

"The only person responsible for Robert Moreno not being in my coaching staff is me," Luis&nbsp;Enrique&nbsp;told a news conference at his unveiling as Spain coach on Wednesday.

"He came to see me in my house and told me he wanted to lead the team at Euro 2020 and afterwards he would be happy to be my assistant coach again."

"I understand that he has worked very hard to be the coach and that he is ambitious - but for me that is disloyal. I would never do something like that and I don't want someone with those characteristics in my staff."

Moreno first worked alongside Luis&nbsp;Enrique&nbsp;at <a href="https://www.wionews.com/india-news/messi-scores-in-700th-match-as-barcelona-ease-into-knockout-stages-264968">Barcelona</a>'s B team and followed him to AS Roma, Celta Vigo and back to Barca, later joining his coaching staff when he landed the Spain job in July 2018.

"I understand his decision but cannot agree with it and told him I didn't want him as my assistant and that I felt strong," added Luis&nbsp;Enrique.

"Ambition is to be encouraged but excessive ambition is a defect, not a virtue."

The former Barcelona coach said he did not inform the Spanish national federation (RFEF) president Luis Rubiales of his intention to return to the role but he and sporting director Jose Francisco Molina offered him the chance to come back.

"This has not been a good year for me but I want to look forward and I want to pay back the faith that has been shown in me," he added.

A freak goal from Valencia's Daniel Wass earned the Spanish side a 2-2 draw in an epic encounter against England's Chelsea on Wednesday that left both sides waiting to book their place in the <a href="https://www.wionews.com/india-news/messi-scores-in-700th-match-as-barcelona-ease-into-knockout-stages-264968">Champions League</a>'s knockout stage.

Valencia, who missed a glut of chances, had taken the lead through Carlos Soler but goals from Mateo Kovacic and Christian Pulisic flipped the match on its head.

The Spaniards missed a penalty through Dani Parejo, but drew level late on when Wass netted a remarkable effort, shaping to centre before finding the net with a finish across goal.

The draw means both sides are on eight points after five games but Valencia have a better head-to-head record and so are second in Group H, with <a href="https://www.wionews.com/sports/champions-league-chelsea-and-nine-man-ajax-share-spoils-in-thrilling-4-4-draw-260245">Chelsea in third</a>.

Ajax Amsterdam sit top on 10 points after winning 2-0 at Lille, who are bottom with one.

Valencia visit last season's semi-finalists Ajax in their final group game and will have to win there to ensure they qualify, while Chelsea will book their place in the last-16 if they beat Lille at home.

"We nearly won it, nearly lost it. It was end to end, not that we wanted it to be," Chelsea boss Frank Lampard said.

Valencia coach Albert Celades added: "The sensation in our dressing room is that we have missed a very good chance to qualify for the next round. But to get to the last game with our fate in our hands is not bad."

Victory for either side at Mestalla would have sent them through and Valencia went ahead when Soler scored in the 40th minute after team mate Maxi Gomez had missed two gilt-edged opportunities.

Yet Kovacic levelled for Chelsea two minutes later, netting for the first time in 122 club games.

Chelsea's top scorer Tammy Abraham was carried off on a stretcher with a serious-looking injury before halftime, although Lampard said after the game the striker had only suffered a knock to the hip.

<a href="https://www.wionews.com/sports/champions-league-valencia-roar-back-in-second-half-to-thrash-lille-260253">Valencia</a> defender Jose Gaya was also taken off on a stretcher after fulltime having collapsed on the pitch.

United States international Pulisic put Lampard's side ahead in the 50th minute after a lengthy VAR review ruled him onside.

Valencia forward Rodrigo Moreno missed an open goal later in the half and then the home side were awarded a penalty.

But captain Parejo was denied from the spot by Chelsea keeper Kepa Arrizabalaga, spurning a second penalty in the competition after also missing in the defeat to Ajax Amsterdam.

The Spaniards eventually levelled in the 82nd minute with a remarkable goal from Danish midfielder Wass, who looked set to cross from the right wing but instead flummoxed Arrizabalaga by firing a shot across goal which bounced off the far post and into the net.

Valencia should have won the game in added time but Rodrigo failed to connect properly with a cross from close range, while Chelsea had a shot cleared off the line before then and Valencia keeper Jasper Cillessen denied Michy Batshuayi.

"Parts of our performance I'm not mad on. We gave away too many chances. We missed a lot as well," said Lampard.

"They were arriving in our box too much. Credit to the players for their work-rate and hanging on in there, but sometimes you have to be more secure than that."

Valencia defender Ezequiel Garay added: "We had a lot of chances and we deserved to win but we have to believe we can win and go through in Amsterdam."

Chelsea thwarted by Valencia in Champions League thriller

A subdued <a href="https://www.wionews.com/sports/manchester-city-owner-to-sell-500-million-stake-valuing-itself-at-48-billion-financial-times-264809">Manchester City</a> reached the Champions League's last 16 and secured top spot in their group despite an unconvincing 1-1 draw at home to Ukraine's Shakhtar Donetsk at the Etihad Stadium on Tuesday.

Ilkay Gundogan had fired City ahead in the 56th minute but Shakhtar earned a potentially valuable point after Israeli substitute Manor Solomon equalised in the 69th.

Atalanta's 2-0 victory over Dinamo Zagreb in Group C's other game meant that <a href="https://www.wionews.com/sports/football-guardiola-is-the-best-manager-in-the-world-juergen-klopp-260679">Pep Guardiola</a>'s side are guaranteed to finish top.

City have 11 points at the summit ahead of their final group game away to Dinamo with Shakhtar in second place on six points. Dinamo have five points and Atalanta four.

Yet while the goal of qualification was secured, it was a far from impressive performance from a team which harbours ambitions of a first <a href="https://www.wionews.com/sports/champions-league-mbappe-stars-as-psg-snatch-draw-against-real-madrid-264752">Champions League</a> triumph this season.

In recent weeks the crispness and sharpness of City's pass-and-move play has not been up to its established standard and their defending remains a concern.

At a subdued Etihad, City survived a scare in the 15th minute when their Brazilian goalkeeper Ederson raced out of his area and completely missed the ball as he attempted to clear.

That allowed Tete to break towards the unguarded goal, but Fernandinho did superbly to cover the near post and block his compatriot's shot.

Moments later, Ederson raced outside his box again but this time his intervention was well-timed and clean, as he slid to clear the danger with Tete threatening once more.

After a mostly uneventful remainder of the first half, City got themselves in front when Gabriel Jesus twisted and turned in the box before poking the ball to Gundogan who slotted home.

Yet Shakhtar drew level with a perfectly-constructed break that ended with Israeli substitute Manor Solomon drilling past Ederson after an excellent pull-back from Dodo.

"The target was to qualify and we have done it," said Guardiola who was facing Shakhtar for the 13th time in his career.

"They always have quality players. In general, we created chances but the draw was enough in the end. Now we have one competition already done, and now our focus will be the Premier League," he said. City are third in the domestic league and trail leaders Liverpool by nine points.

For Shakhtar everything is still to play for in their final match, at home to Atalanta on December&nbsp;11, with all three teams in the group still having a chance to join City in the knockout stage.

The result was particularly impressive for Shakhtar given they were without two key players in Taison and Marlos.

"To get a draw at City is fantastic," said Shakhtar's Portuguese coach Luis Castro.

"We have a family atmosphere in our team and we all get on with each other. We’ve nothing won but we’ve nothing lost yet either."

Champions League: Manchester City secure top 16 berth despite draw with Shakhtar Donetsk

Paulo Dybala's ferocious curled free-kick earned&nbsp;Juventus&nbsp;a 1-0 home win over Atletico Madrid and top spot in <a href="https://www.wionews.com/sports/champions-league-mourinho-masterstroke-pays-off-as-tottenham-spurs-hit-back-to-win-264816">Champions League</a> Group D.

The Italian champions had already booked their place for the last 16 with two games to spare but made sure of top spot with an impressive win on Tuesday.

Dybala struck two minutes into first-half injury time. His left-footed effort whipped into the net from a seemingly impossible angle leaving goalkeeper Jan Oblak with no chance.

Diego Simeone's Atletico will need to win their final group game against Lokomotiv Moscow in Madrid to be sure of advancing to the knockout rounds.

"I think Dybala scored a goal that we can't recommend," said his coach Maricio Sarri.

"The first thing a coach says when he sees someone trying to shoot from that position is 'but why the hell are you shooting from there!'&nbsp;

"He did something extraordinary, he deserved the applause," said Sarri. "It was an extraordinary piece of skill."

<a href="https://www.wionews.com/sports/cristiano-ronaldo-back-against-favourite-enemy-atletico-264553">Cristiano Ronaldo returned</a> to the side and played for the entire match after missing last weekend's game against Atalanta and was substituted in their previous two games because of a slight knee problem.

"I haven't spoken to him yet about the pain in his knee, but he looked to be in good shape," added Sarri.

Juventus&nbsp;have 13 points from five games, with <a href="https://www.wionews.com/sports/champions-league-atletico-madrid-dig-deep-to-snatch-draw-with-juventus-250480">Atletico</a> still on seven, one point ahead of third-placed Bayer Leverkusen who beat Lokomotiv 2-0.

"We had a good match against a great rival," said Simeone. "We had chances but we lacked a little efficiency.&nbsp;

"We &nbsp;didn't score ourselves, which is the most important thing in football, but we were always in the match."

Ronaldo was partnered up front by <a href="https://www.wionews.com/sports/serie-a-juventus-dybala-sinks-milan-as-angry-ronaldo-substituted-261314">Dybala</a> as in-form Gonzalo Higuain started on the bench.

Ronaldo had another injury scare in the first half, grimacing in pain and limping after colliding with the corner flag, but he played on.

Atletico had their chances in a balanced first half. Thomas Partey sent a long-range volley wide after 13 minutes.&nbsp;Juventus&nbsp;goalkeeper Wojciech Szczesny got down low to smother a goal-bound Saul Niguez effort.

The 26-year-old Dybala was the standout player. &nbsp; He made the breakthrough just before the break when he curled in a superb strike from a tight angle to leave Atletico goalkeeper Oblak completely beaten.

Dybala's celebrations included a military-style salute to Turkish international teammate Merih Demiral.

"It was just a joke between us in the dressing room, there was no message in that," said the Argentine.

"It was a good goal from a tight angle, there were a lot of players on front of me," he added.

Ronaldo threatened after an hour, racing towards goal only to shoot wide. Then Federico Bernadeschi rattled the post after coming on for Welsh international Aaron Ramsey.

Dybala went off to a standing ovation and was replaced by Higuain for the last quarter of an hour.

Matthijs de Ligt, who had been a doubt after dislocating his shoulder at the weekend, pulled off a brilliant sliding tackle to steal the ball from the feet of a goal-bound Angel Correa with seven minutes to go.

Alvaro Morata missed the chance to poach a point in the final moments of the game.

Correa sent the ball across the face of goal but the former&nbsp;Juventus&nbsp;striker failed to finish off on front of an empty goal.

Silver Lake is buying over 10 per cent&nbsp;of Abu Dhabi-controlled City Football Group (CFG), the newspaper reported, adding that an official announcement was expected as early as Wednesday.

Manchester City owner to sell $500 million stake valuing itself at $4.8 billion: Report

Sadio Mane has, in the words of <a href="https://www.wionews.com/sports/liverpool-masterclass-leaves-manchester-city-in-tatters-261238">Liverpool</a> teammate Andy Robertson, "taken his game to another level", stepping out of <a href="https://www.wionews.com/sports/mohamed-salah-brushes-off-rumours-related-to-rift-with-sadio-mane-249578">Mohamed Salah</a>'s shadow to become arguably the main man at Anfield.

The Senegal international shares star billing with Salah and Roberto Firmino as part of the European champions' electrifying and fluid front three.

But this year Mane is leading Liverpool's charge,&nbsp;his goal at Selhurst Park at the weekend was his 12th of the campaign and his 29th for the club in the calendar year.

Mane frightens defences with his pace, direct running and skill and his goal return has eased the burden on the shoulders of Salah.

Liverpool defender Robertson praised Mane after his goal in the 2-1 victory against Crystal Palace, which kept Liverpool eight points clear of second-placed Leicester in the <a href="https://www.wionews.com/sports/premier-league-manchester-united-denied-comeback-win-by-late-mcburnie-equaliser-264347">Premier League</a>.

On Wednesday he will train his sights on Napoli in the Champions League, with a win guaranteeing Liverpool top spot in the group.

"He has been fantastic," said Robertson. "Even when I came he was amazing but maybe did not have as much composure as he does now in front of goal.

"Now, every time he's in front of goal you don't think he'll miss. The one he had at the start of the second half (of the Palace game), we were surprised he didn't score and that is the type of player he is. You expect him to score and that is a good thing and he's popped up with another crucial goal."

"The others are pitching in as well but it's been a fantastic year for him and he's taken his game to another level," Robertson added.

Mane joined Liverpool in 2016, a year before Salah, but the Egyptian quickly became the alpha male at Anfield, scoring 44 goals in all competitions in a remarkable debut season in 2017/18.

Last season the two players shared the Premier League Golden Boot with Arsenal's Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, with the three forwards all scoring 22 goals.

And Salah has pipped his teammate to the African player of the year award over the past two seasons.&nbsp;

Both have been shortlisted again for this year's prize and Mane, who reached the final of the Africa Cup of Nations with Senegal this year, is seen as an outsider to win the <a href="https://www.wionews.com/sports/liverpool-dominates-ballon-dor-shortlist-with-seven-names-257421">Ballon d'Or</a>.

Mane has talked about how lucky he is to play alongside his two attacking comrades-in-arms.

"Every single player who plays alongside them would enjoy it because they are very good players and they make everything easy, so I just enjoy playing alongside them," he told the official Liverpool magazine.

Despite those warm words, there was a rare display of emotion from the 27-year-old earlier this season when he was substituted at Burnley, furious that Salah had not passed to him when he was in a better position.

It led to suggestions that all was not harmonious between the pair, but Mane was quick to correct any impression of an underlying problem.

"It can happen, he didn't see me and I was frustrated. We are really good friends," he said.

A 176-second hat-trick for Southampton in 2015 catapulted Mane to worldwide attention.

He joined Liverpool the following year for £34 million ($44 million) and was voted the club's player of the year in his debut season.

Last year the Senegalese signed a new deal committing him to the club until 2023.

At the time <a href="https://www.wionews.com/sports/klopp-praises-liverpool-intensity-after-crucial-win-over-city-261303">Klopp</a> called him the "complete" attacking player and said he had improved season by season.

"The only criticism I could ever have of Sadio is that maybe at times he is the only one not to see just how good he is," said the Liverpool boss.&nbsp;

The question harassed defenders will be asking themselves is just how good he will be when he starts fully believing in himself.

Sadio Mane has, in the words of Liverpool teammate Andy Robertson, "taken his game to another level", stepping out of Mohamed Salah's shadow to become arguably the main man at Anfield.

Sadio Mane has, in the words of Liverpool teammate Andy Robertson, "taken his game to another level", stepping out of Mohamed Salah's shadow to become arguably the main man at Anfield. The Senegal international shares star billing with Salah and Roberto Firmino as part of the European champions' electrifying and fluid front three. But this year Mane is leading Liverpool's charge, his goal at Selhurst Park at the weekend was his 12th of the campaign and his 29th for the club in the calendar year. Mane frightens defences with his pace, direct running and skill and his goal return has eased the burden on the shoulders of Salah. Liverpool defender Robertson praised Mane after his goal in the 2-1 victory against Crystal Palace, which kept Liverpool eight points clear of second-placed Leicester in the Premier League. You expect him to score and that is a good thing and he's popped up with another crucial goal." "The others are pitching in as well but it's been a fantastic year for him and he's taken his game to another level," Robertson added. Football: Mane the main man as Liverpool close on Champions League knockouts

Juventus star <a href="https://www.wionews.com/sports/soccer-ronaldo-moves-onto-99-as-portugal-qualify-for-euro-2020-262792">Cristiano Ronaldo</a> warned he was 'back' and ready for Tuesday's Champions League meeting with old rivals Atletico Madrid in Turin.

Coach Maurizio Sarri said the 34-year-old Portugal international's fitness still had to be assessed before the Group D clash as he battles a knee problem.

But the 34-year-old showed his eagerness to play by posting a photo on Twitter with the caption: "I'm back," followed by an emoji of a flexed bicep.

Ronaldo has a long history with the Spanish side going back to his nine years with city rivals Real Madrid.

The five-time <a href="https://www.wionews.com/sports/liverpool-dominates-ballon-dor-shortlist-with-seven-names-257421">Ballon d'Or</a> winner scored 22 goals against Atletico for Real, including in the 2014 Champions League final triumph. He also hit the winning spot-kick as they were defeated in the final again two years later.

In last season's Champions League, the Spanish were 2-0 winners in the first leg of their last 16 tie, but a Ronaldo hat-trick in Turin in March denied them a quarter-final berth.

"I have five Champions Leagues, these guys zero," Ronaldo had declared after the defeat in Madrid, holding up five fingers to the home fans throughout the game.

This season Ronaldo has scored just once in the Champions League and was <a href="https://www.wionews.com/sports/serie-a-juventus-dybala-sinks-milan-as-angry-ronaldo-substituted-261314">furious after being substituted</a> by coach Maurizio Sarri in their last game against Lokomotiv Moscow, also being hauled off before the hour in the following game against AC Milan.

In characteristic defiant style he hit back with four goals to qualify holders <a href="https://www.wionews.com/sports/soccer-ronaldo-moves-onto-99-as-portugal-qualify-for-euro-2020-262792">Portugal for Euro 2020.</a>

But he was rested for Saturday's Serie A game against Atalanta which Juventus won 2-1 thanks to a Gonzalo Higuain double to stay top of the Italian league.

"Cristiano trained with his teammates yesterday (Sunday)," Sarri told a press conference at the Juventus Stadium.&nbsp;

"It seems that his condition is improving but we still have to evaluate between today and tomorrow.

"The positive thing he was able to play throughout the training session with his teammates."

Atletico coach Diego Simeone knows what to expect from a player who holds the record of <a href="https://www.wionews.com/sports/champions-league-costas-stoppage-time-gem-sends-juventus-into-last-16-260436">Champions League </a>goals with 127.

"Ronaldo is a champion, we have always suffered a lot against him. He is number one, but I don't think it's Ronaldo against Atletico because Juve is a great team.&nbsp;

"I have no doubt, Juventus will be the protagonist again this year."

Atletico midfielder Koke added: "We consider the team as a whole, not just Ronaldo.

"Ronaldo had scored a lot of goals against us, we'll see if he will play one of his typical matches tomorrow."

Sarri said he had "a good relationship with Ronaldo" despite the player's harsh words in his direction at being substituted.

"If a player who has won so much is angry about being substituted, it means he still has a lot of motivation, and this is something positive," said the former Chelsea and Napoli coach.&nbsp;

<a href="https://www.wionews.com/sports/champions-league-costas-stoppage-time-gem-sends-juventus-into-last-16-260436">Juventus</a> are already through to the last 16 and want to finish top of their group with second-placed Atletico needing a win to guarantee their place.

The Italian champions will be without defender Matthijs de Ligt, with a dislocated shoulder, with forward Federico Bernardeschi, who bruised his chest, in doubt.

Atletico's Portugal forward Joao Felix is also fighting for fitness.

But Sarri conceded he was spoilt for choice up front between Ronaldo, Paulo Dybala and Higuain.

"We have three very strong strikers for just two roles, I think it is an ideal situation," continued the Juventus coach.

"Playing Dybala, Higuain and Cristiano all together is difficult because of their characteristics, but all three know how to play really well and are comfortable with each other."&nbsp;

Higuain, who has scored five goals this season, said he was not trying to take Ronaldo's throne.

"I don't have to steal anything from anyone," said the 31-year-old, who played alongside Ronaldo at <a href="https://www.wionews.com/sports/real-madrid-keep-pace-with-barca-as-bale-suffers-hostile-reception-264159">Real Madrid</a>.&nbsp;

"We know who Ronaldo is, a winner. I try to help the team win, we are all important and crucial, both those who play and those who don't play.

Champions League: I'm back, warns Ronaldo as Juventus face Atletico Madrid

A day after winning their first Copa Libertadores in 38 years, Flamengo completed a rare double on Sunday when they secured the Brazilian league title after closest challengers Palmeiras lost 2-1 at home to Gremio.

The result leaves Flamengo an unassailable 13 points ahead of Palmeiras with four games of the Serie A season remaining.

It is the seventh league title for the Rio de Janeiro club and completes a historic weekend, coming less than 24 hours after Gabriel Barbosa scored two goals in the dying minutes to give them a 2-1 victory over River Plate in the Libertadores final in Peru.

It is the first time that a Brazilian team has won both the league and the Libertadores in the same year since Pele's Santos achieved the same feat in 1963.

The Flamengo players had driven through the centre of Rio on an open-top lorry earlier on Sunday to celebrate the Libertadores victory and they did not need to kick a ball for their celebrations to double.

Defending league champions Palmeiras had to beat Gremio to keep their slim title hopes alive but although Bruno Henrique equalised Everton’s 69th-minute opener for Gremio, Pepe stepped up in stoppage time to give the visitors all three points.

Flamengo have 81 points from 34 games; Palmeiras are joint second with Santos on 68 points.

The win completes a phenomenal year for a club that has gone 26 games unbeaten since losing on the first weekend of August.

Under Portuguese coach Jorge Jesus, who has quickly become a cult figure, Flamengo have overrun opponents with a high-intensity pressing game and an all-out attack spearheaded by prolific scorers Barbosa and Bruno Henrique.

Barbosa, who is on loan from Inter Milan, is the top goalscorer in both the Libertadores and Serie A, while Bruno Henrique was named the Best Player of the 2019 Libertadores on Sunday.

Flamengo now have four league games remaining before turning their attention to the <a href="https://www.wionews.com/sports/revamped-fifa-club-world-cup-important-for-asia-gianni-infantino-208343">Club World Cup in Qatar</a>, where they could face <a href="https://www.wionews.com/sports/liverpool-masterclass-leaves-manchester-city-in-tatters-261238">Liverpool</a>, the team they beat to win the Intercontinental Cup in 1981.

Oli McBurnie's stoppage-time equaliser earned Sheffield United a 3-3 draw against <a href="https://www.wionews.com/sports/manchester-united-sponsorships-march-on-despite-on-field-slip-ups-263140">Manchester United</a> at Bramall Lane in the Premier League on Sunday after the visitors had been on the verge of a thrilling comeback victory.

Coming into the contest on the back of one win in their last 10 <a href="https://www.wionews.com/sports/liverpool-masterclass-leaves-manchester-city-in-tatters-261238">Premier League</a> away games, either side of the summer, Manchester were immediately on the back foot and had goalkeeper David de Gea to thank for keeping them in the match early on.

They could not hold out for long, though, and John Fleck bundled home the opener in the 19th minute after De Gea had denied John Lundstram.

The home side did not relent, creating plenty more openings and pressing their opponents at every opportunity. Seven minutes after the interval they went 2-0 up, with Lys Mousset drilling home his fourth goal of the season.

United looked dead and buried as they struggled to get back into the contest after the break but 19-year-old Brandon Williams's first senior goal 18 minutes from time sparked them into life.

Another academy graduate, Mason Greenwood, came off the bench to level things up five minutes later, before Marcus Rashford completed the turnaround in the 79th minute with a fierce strike, earning United a possible win reminiscent of the Alex Ferguson years.

However, substitute McBurnie denied the visitors in stoppage time to add a further twist to the breathless encounter, squeezing a strike past De Gea, with the goal awarded after a lengthy <a href="https://www.wionews.com/sports/english-premier-league-promises-to-improve-and-speed-up-var-use-262258">VAR review</a>.

English Premier League: Manchester United denied comeback win by late McBurnie equaliser

Neymar made his latest comeback from injury for <a href="https://www.wionews.com/sports/di-maria-sends-psg-five-points-clear-as-nice-see-red-256983">Paris Saint-Germain</a> on Friday as first-half goals by Mauro Icardi and Angel Di Maria saw the Ligue 1 leaders ease to a 2-0 win over Lille at the Parc des Princes.

The in-form Icardi opened the scoring from close range in the 17th minute with his 10th goal in PSG's last nine games, and Di Maria doubled their lead just after the half-hour mark.

Despite not being near their best, Thomas Tuchel's side were too strong for the team who finished runners-up behind them last season.

After just 14 games, PSG are 11 points clear of second-placed Marseille, who play on Sunday.

Neymar had not played for his club since October 5, having suffered a <a href="https://www.wionews.com/sports/injured-neymar-sidelined-for-four-weeks-paris-st-germain-256001">hamstring injury</a> playing for Brazil against Nigeria a week later.

It was just the latest spell on the sidelines for the world's most expensive player, who has featured in barely half of PSG's matches since signing from Barcelona in 2017.

His decision to fly to Madrid to take in the Davis Cup tennis this week did not go down well with Tuchel, but the German coach still handed Neymar a start here.

On just his sixth appearance of the campaign, <a href="https://www.wionews.com/sports/football-barcelona-offered-to-restructure-salaries-to-pay-for-neymar-return-259218">Neymar</a> lasted 65 minutes before being replaced by Kylian Mbappe, who had been struggling with illness in recent days.

"I didn't expect too much from him because he has been out for six weeks. He lacked precision and his usual sense of timing but that is how it is," said Tuchel of Neymar.&nbsp;

The Brazilian only produced brief glimpses of his class and headed straight to the dressing room after being taken off, with some supporters jeering the 27-year-old as he departed.

"It's normal, lots of players do that," insisted Tuchel, dismissing any controversy.

"Others go to the bench, but I didn't see it because I was focused on making changes on the field. There is no need to make a big thing about it."

The main reason for Neymar's withdrawal, however, will have been to keep him fresh for next Tuesday's trip to Real Madrid when he will hope to make his first Champions League appearance this season.

Lille had beaten PSG 5-1 when the sides last met in April, but they came here on a run of just one win in nine and without an away victory since March.

They were without their top scorer, Nigerian striker Victor Osimhen, due to suspension, and coach Christophe Galtier had been left reeling when two of his assistants,&nbsp;Portuguese duo Joao Sacramento and Nuno Santos,&nbsp;left 48 hours before this game to team up with Jose Mourinho at Tottenham Hotspur.

They still almost took a second-minute lead through Xeka, but the midfielder's shot was saved by Keylor Navas.

Instead it was PSG who went in front from their first chance, Icardi converting at the far post after Jose Fonte had failed to cut out Idrissa Gueye's low centre.

Mike Maignan saved well from Gueye before the home side scored again in the 31st minute through another of their Argentine contingent.

Both Di Maria and Icardi had scored in PSG's last game, a 2-1 win at Brest, and both were fresh here having not featured in the Argentina squad for their friendly matches against Brazil and Uruguay.

On form they surely deserve to be playing for their country, however.

Di Maria controlled Julian Draxler's pass and beat Maignan to make it 2-0. That was the end of the scoring, although Draxler and substitute Edinson Cavani both squandered excellent second-half chances.

"They didn't play for Argentina and that was good for us because it meant we were able to manage their workload and keep them fresh," Tuchel said of his two goal-scorers.

"I'm delighted because they got their goals and worked hard for the team."

Ligue 1: Icardi, Di Maria hand PSG victory on Neymar's latest return

New Tottenham Hotspur <a href="https://www.wionews.com/sports/football-tottenham-hotspur-name-mourinho-as-manager-263339">manager Jose Mourinho</a> wants to take the club led by England striker <a href="https://www.wionews.com/sports/harry-kane-treble-as-england-demolish-montenegro-to-book-euro-2020-spot-262238">Harry Kane</a> to the next level by winning trophies and said he would love to stay in the job for at least as long as his predecessor Mauricio Pochettino.

The much-travelled 56-year-old Portuguese was appointed as Spurs head coach on Wednesday the day after<a href="https://www.wionews.com/sports/pochettino-leaves-farewell-message-to-spurs-players-263882"> Pochettino</a>, who spent 5-1/2 years in charge of the north London club, was sacked with his team struggling in 14th place in the Premier League.

However, the Argentine fan-favourite failed to deliver any silverware despite having a squad full of internationals and that is something Mourinho is determined to change as he prepares for the trip to West Ham United on Saturday.

Asked if he had to keep hold of Kane to bring success to <a href="https://www.wionews.com/sports/champions-league-spurs-close-in-on-last-16-berth-with-4-0-rout-of-red-star-260412">Tottenham</a> he told a group of reporters at the club's training ground: "When you try to buy Kane it's an impossible mission. He's one of the best strikers in the world.

"You just need his team, England or Tottenham, to go with him to the next level. What's the next level? Titles.

"I think he needs to win with us, with England, he needs to win something to highlight the quality that he has as a player, the goals he scores, what he brings to the team."

Kane, 26, has bagged 131 goals in 189 <a href="https://www.wionews.com/sports/english-premier-league-promises-to-improve-and-speed-up-var-use-262258">Premier League</a> games for Spurs and has netted 32 in 45 matches for England.

"With the squad we have, with the quality of the structure of the club, we can have the same ambitions as clubs potentially bigger than us," added Mourinho. "I don't want my players to fear anything. We go for everything against everyone."

The Portuguese coach usually never stays too long in one job and only in his first spell at Chelsea did he reach a fourth season, though he was sacked in September 2007 after six games.

However, he said he wanted to remain at Spurs for longer than that and would like to be there until he's at least 61.

"I would love to stay for many years. I say 'many years' but I know realistically how football is, but I would like to... do a Mauricio (Pochettino), 5-1/2 years, it would be amazing. Maybe (this is) the last job (in England)."

The <a href="https://www.wionews.com/sports/football-mourinho-pledges-passion-after-being-named-spurs-boss-263591">appointment of Mourinho</a> by Spurs chairman Daniel Levy surprised many people in the game since the club are not known for spending big money on buying players, unlike many of the top European clubs Mourinho has managed during his career.

However, the new Tottenham boss said he did not need a large transfer kitty since he already had a good squad.

"I don't need transfers. That's the basic thing. During the process we are going to need ticks (tweaks). You lose a player, you get a player, but this is readjustments to your squad. But the more you like a squad the less money you need.

"I like the players, I don't need to spend huge amounts."

Mourinho also said he was delighted to have Levy, who has a reputation as a tough negotiator, behind him at Tottenham.

"He has a vision and part of that vision is to make the club better, bigger. There is no better and bigger football club without a better and bigger football team, so keeping the best players is obviously part of that plan.

"I used to be in clubs that feared him (Levy). It's true, He's powerful. He's a businessman but he's a football man. He has big experience, apart from his intelligence overall.

"As a football man he understands football, he understands the industry, he understands the evolution. He's very clever, he's very intelligent. It's great to have him on my side."

One player whose form dipped under Pochettino is 23-year-old Dele Alli, who has struggled to secure a starting spot at Spurs and has lost his place in the England squad, albeit after a series of injuries that have hampered his progress.

Mourinho knows he must work hard with the midfielder to return him to his best ahead of England's Euro 2020 campaign.

"He's potentially a fantastic player," said Mourinho. "Now I have to try to create a tactical situation that he's happy with, give him the right dynamic, prepare him physically because he had important injuries too and is not at the top of his form.

"I cannot expect him now to play Saturday, if he plays, and to go there and be the man of the match but to go through a process that can bring the real Dele back because the real Dele is the one that in the last years impressed all of us."

New Tottenham Hotspur manager Jose Mourinho wants to take the club led by England striker Harry Kane to the next level by winning trophies and said he would love to stay in the job for at least as long as his predecessor Mauricio Pochettino.

New Tottenham Hotspur manager Jose Mourinho wants to take the club led by England striker Harry Kane to the next level by winning trophies and said he would love to stay in the job for at least as long as his predecessor Mauricio Pochettino. The much-travelled 56-year-old Portuguese was appointed as Spurs head coach on Wednesday the day after Pochettino, who spent 5-1/2 years in charge of the north London club, was sacked with his team struggling in 14th place in the Premier League. However, the Argentine fan-favourite failed to deliver any silverware despite having a squad full of internationals and that is something Mourinho is determined to change as he prepares for the trip to West Ham United on Saturday. Asked if he had to keep hold of Kane to bring success to Tottenham he told a group of reporters at the club's training ground: "When you try to buy Kane it's an impossible mission. Football: Mourinho aiming to take Spurs and Kane to the next level

Sweden star <a href="https://www.wionews.com/sports/football-ibrahimovic-set-for-ac-milan-return-says-mls-chief-260667">Zlatan Ibrahimovic</a> has been offered a six-month deal to come to the aid of struggling former Italian giants AC Milan, according to reports in Italy on Thursday.

The 38-year-old striker confirmed his departure from Los Angeles Galaxy last week following the club's elimination from the Major League Soccer playoffs.

Gazzetta dello Sport and Sky Sports Italia reported that the former seven-time European champions have now made contact with the player's agent Mino Raiola.

The US-owned club want the former Swedish international for six months and are prepared to pay him six million euros ($6.6 million) if he remains for 18 months in total, Gazzetta claimed.

Milan finished fifth last season, missing out on a return to <a href="https://www.wionews.com/sports/champions-league-costas-stoppage-time-gem-sends-juventus-into-last-16-260436">Champions League</a> football by just a point to city rivals Inter.

They have had a poor start to this campaign and are 14th after 12 games before they host last year's runners-up Napoli on Saturday in the San Siro.

Ibrahimovic played for two seasons between 2010 and 2012 with AC Milan, helping them to their last Serie A title, and scoring 42 goals in 61 league appearances.

He also won three league titles with Inter Milan, and two with <a href="https://www.wionews.com/sports/serie-a-juventus-dybala-sinks-milan-as-angry-ronaldo-substituted-261314">Juventus</a>, which were both revoked following the 'Calciopoli' match-fixing scandal.

AC Milan offer Ibrahimovic six-month deal - Reports

Jose Mourinho promised "real passion" following his appointment as Tottenham Hotspur boss on Wednesday after Mauricio Pochettino was sacked by the struggling Premier League club.

The former Chelsea, Real Madrid and Manchester United manager was <a href="https://www.wionews.com/sports/football-tottenham-hotspur-name-mourinho-as-manager-263339">announced as the new boss</a> at White Hart Lane hours after the Argentine was dismissed on Tuesday evening.

"I couldn't be happier and look forward to the challenge," Mourinho told Tottenham's official website.&nbsp;

"What can I promise? Passion, real passion. Passion for my job, but also passion for my club, that's the way I have been all my career."

The 56-year-old, who had been out of work since leaving United last December, signed a contract until the end of the 2022-23 season after Spurs acted to halt their slide down the table.

The club <a href="https://www.wionews.com/sports/champions-league-spurs-close-in-on-last-16-berth-with-4-0-rout-of-red-star-260412">reached the Champions League</a> final last season but are languishing in 14th spot in the <a href="https://www.wionews.com/sports/premier-league-fa-overturn-spurs-striker-sons-red-card-for-tackle-on-evertons-gomes-260237">Premier League</a> after picking up just three wins from 12 games. They are 11 points off the top four positions which allow qualification to European club football's top competition.

"I want to try, obviously, everything to bring happiness to everyone who loves the club," added the new manager, who has won domestic league titles in Portugal, England, Italy and Spain.

Mourinho was due to take training on Wednesday before his first press conference on Thursday. His first game in charge is at West Ham on Saturday.

His glittering CV includes Champions League titles with Porto and Inter Milan.

He also won three Premier League titles over two spells in charge of Chelsea, and returned to England to manage Manchester United in 2016, where he won the Europa League and the League Cup.

"In Jose we have one of the most successful managers in football," said Spurs chairman Daniel Levy. "He has a wealth of experience, can inspire teams and is a great tactician.

"He has won honours at every club he has coached. We believe he will bring energy and belief to the dressing room."

Mourinho was sacked by <a href="https://www.wionews.com/sports/manchester-united-sponsorships-march-on-despite-on-field-slip-ups-263140">United</a> last December and has been without a club since, most recently working as a TV pundit.

Despite his troubles in the latter stages of his tenure at Old Trafford he remains a big name but is a divisive figure and there will be questions over whether his pragmatic style can mesh with Tottenham's tradition of attacking football.

Pochettino had transformed Spurs' fortunes since arriving in 2014, qualifying for the Champions League four times.

Although he failed to win a trophy, Tottenham made a dramatic run to the European Cup final for the first time in their history in June, losing 2-0 to <a href="https://www.wionews.com/sports/liverpool-masterclass-leaves-manchester-city-in-tatters-261238">Liverpool</a> in Madrid.

But that masked a worrying dip in domestic form in the second half of last season and Pochettino was unable to reverse the slide in this campaign.

They were also bundled out of the League Cup by fourth-tier Colchester United and suffered an embarrassing 7-2 defeat at home to Bayern Munich in the Champions League.

Former Tottenham manager Harry Redknapp told the BBC that poor results had forced the club's hand.

"The same voice after six years starts to wear a little thin, a new man can find another 10 per cent, they will find a spring in their step for Jose's first game," he said.

Mourinho has a tough task on his hands. No team with as low a tally as Spurs have after 12 games, 14 points, has ever gone on to record a top-four finish.

Pochettino, operating on a tight budget in comparison with his rivals, nurtured a squad of young players to become household names including Harry Kane, Dele Alli and Christian Eriksen.

A series of Spurs players paid warm tribute to their departing manager.

Tottenham and England forward Kane tweeted: "Gaffer. I'll be forever thankful to you for helping me achieve my dreams."&nbsp;

South Korean forward Son Heung-min said in an Instagram post that "words are powerless to express my gratitude".

The Tottenham Hotspur Supporters' Trust released a statement expressing "concerns" and seeking clarity over how the new boss and the board would work together.

The group asked: "Is the manager solely accountable? How much has the board's line on wages and transfers contributed to player unrest and disaffection?"

Football: Mourinho pledges 'passion' after being named Spurs boss

Spain&nbsp;coach Robert Moreno is to be dismissed from the role, according to Spanish media reports on Monday, after his side <a href="https://www.wionews.com/sports/euro-2020-qualifiers-spain-thrash-romania-amid-doubts-about-coach-morenos-future-263082">thrashed Romania 5-0 </a>in their final <a href="https://www.wionews.com/sports/euro-2020-qualifiers-france-celebrate-2-0-win-in-albanias-new-stadium-262830">Euro 2020 qualifier</a>.

Spanish newspaper El Mundo reported that former&nbsp;Spain&nbsp;coach Luis Enrique is set to make a sensational return five months after resigning from the role due to the illness of his daughter Xana, who tragically passed away in September.

The Spanish soccer federation did not respond to a request for comment on Moreno's future but announced that their president Luis Rubiales and sporting director Jose Francisco Molina will hold a news conference on Tuesday.

Moreno, Luis Enrique's long-time assistant who was given the top job in June, refused to give the usual post-match news conference and did not speak to any media, with El Mundo saying he bid farewell to the players after the game in tears.

Moreno won four out of six games in charge of&nbsp;Spain&nbsp;and drew two, with his side clinching a place at Euro 2020 last month with a 1-1 draw away to Sweden.

Spain&nbsp;also won all three games when Moreno took temporary charge between March and June while Luis Enrique was on leave. They <a href="https://www.wionews.com/sports/euro-2020-qualifiers-sergio-ramos-gives-spain-winning-start-205278">finished top of Group F</a>, taking 26 points from 10 games.

Moreno, an international relations graduate who had no playing career, was thrust into the biggest job in Spanish football in unusual circumstances following Luis Enrique's resignation in June.

He revealed he felt "bittersweet" about getting the role, and in September said he would be happy to step aside if Luis Enrique decided he wished to return to the job.

Questions about Moreno's suitability for the role began to emerge following sluggish 1-1 draws away to Norway and Sweden in October, although&nbsp;Spain&nbsp;responded to those results by hammering Malta 7-0 on Friday to clinch top spot in Group F.

Doubts grew about Moreno's future when federation president Rubiales declined to say whether he would be in charge at Euro 2020.

Moreno said before the Romania game that he was not ruffled by Rubiales' dithering over his future and suggested he was confident he would remain in charge.

"It's normal that you are questioned in your job, especially if you are in the spotlight, and all I can do is focus on my work. I think I have a 10 out of 10 chance of staying," he said.

Football: Spain coach Moreno to be replaced by Luis Enrique

Spain rounded off their <a href="https://www.wionews.com/sports/denmark-seal-euro-2020-place-with-ireland-draw-263058">Euro 2020</a> qualifying campaign with a 5-0 win at home to Romania on Tuesday amid doubts over Robert Moreno's future as national team coach with media reports swirling that Luis Enrique could return to the role.

Fabian Ruiz put Spain in front after eight minutes while forward Gerard Moreno struck twice and then forced an own goal from Romania's Adrian Rus before the break, with Mikel Oyarzabal hitting the fifth in second-half stoppage time.

Moreno's position was called into question before kick off as several media reports said he would not take charge of the side at next year's European Championship.

Reports suggested Luis Enrique could make a shock return, having left the role in June after his daughter Xana was diagnosed with cancer and tragically passed away in September.

Moreno, Luis Enrique's long-time assistant coach who succeeded him in June, did not give the usual post-match news conference or speak to any media, while players were unable to confirm whether or not he was going to continue in the role.

"In the end we can't do anything, we just have to focus on training and doing as best as we can. We support the coach and his staff," said double scorer Moreno.

Midfielder Saul Niguez added: "We don't know anything, I can't speculate. Robert's work has been reflected on the pitch and we're all happy with him."

Romania coach Cosmin Contra confirmed after the game that he would leave his role when his contract expires in December.

Spain had sealed their place at the finals a month ago and clinched top spot in Group F with a 7-0 win at home to Malta on Friday but they still made a flying start and took the lead when midfielder Fabian Ruiz volleyed home in the eighth minute.

Romania had no chance of qualifying from the group but were already assured of a playoff place via the UEFA Nations League.

They spurned a clear chance to level when George Puscas won the ball back in Spain's area but he was thwarted by keeper Kepa Arrizabalaga and his side were punished when Gerard Moreno glanced a header into the net to double the hosts' lead.

Forward Moreno put <a href="https://www.wionews.com/sports/euro-2020-qualifiers-sergio-ramos-gives-spain-winning-start-205278">Spain</a> further ahead in the 43rd and sparked the fourth goal when his attempted cross was diverted into the net by Romania defender Adrian Rus for an own goal.

His side appeared to relax after the break although Alvaro Morata hit the woodwork and substitute Mikel Oyarzabal added a fifth goal in stoppage time with a superb low strike from outside the area.

Unbeaten Spain ended the campaign with 26 points from 10 games, five points ahead of Sweden who also qualified for next year's tournament. Romania finished fourth with 14.

Euro 2020 qualifiers: Spain thrash Romania amid doubts about coach Moreno's future

Switzerland qualified for <a href="https://www.wionews.com/sports/italy-put-nine-past-armenia-to-finish-with-perfect-record-263045">Euro 2020</a> with an easy 6-1 win away to Gibraltar in their final Group D qualifying match on Monday with Cedric Itten scoring twice.

The Swiss topped the group with 17 points, one ahead of <a href="https://www.wionews.com/sports/denmark-seal-euro-2020-place-with-ireland-draw-263058">Denmark who also qualified</a>.

Needing a draw to qualify, the Swiss went ahead after 10 minutes through Itten, who had scored on his debut on Friday to give them a 1-0 win over Georgia. Ruben Vargas got to the byline and sent over a low cross which the Gibraltar defence failed to intercept and Itten tapped in.

Vargas himself headed the second from Loris Benito's cross five minutes after halftime and Christian Fassnacht added the third seven minutes later after the Gibraltar defence failed to deal with Michael Lang's cross.

Gibraltar pulled one back in the 74th minute when a long throw was headed on at the near post, the ball bobbled around and Reece Styche prodded it in.

But the celebrations did not last long as Switzerland went straight down the other end from the re-start and Benito added a fourth.

Itten took his tally to three in two internationals when he headed the fifth and provided the pass for Granit Xhaka to slot home the sixth as Gibraltar tired.

Switzerland qualified for Euro 2020 with an easy 6-1 win away to Gibraltar in their final Group D qualifying match on Monday with Cedric Itten scoring twice. The Swiss topped the group with 17 points, one ahead of Denmark who also qualified. Switzerland qualify for Euro 2020 with win over Gibraltar

Argentina's <a href="https://www.wionews.com/sports/messi-goal-gives-argentina-1-0-win-over-brazil-262481">Lionel Messi</a> scored an added-time penalty to salvage a 2-2 draw with Uruguay as they twice came from behind in an entertaining friendly match in Israel on Monday.

Argentina, now unbeaten in six games since a disappointing Copa America, had the better of the early play but fell behind in the 34th minute when Edinson Cavani stabbed home from close range after a nice build-up by Luis Suarez and Lucas Torreira.

The crowd in Tel Aviv cheered Messi throughout and it was the forward who helped Argentina draw level in the 63rd.

Messi’s free kick from the left was nodded home by Sergio Aguero to put a more realistic sheen on the scoreline for the Argentines, who had been the more positive side throughout.

However, Suarez gave Uruguay the lead again in the 69th when he scored with a powerful 20-metre free kick that flew past goalkeeper Esteban Andrada into the top corner.

But the last word went to Messi who, three days after he missed from 12 yards against Brazil, made no mistake by coolly side-footing home from the spot to secure a deserved draw.

The fixture was the last international for both teams before they begin their 2022 World Cup qualifying campaign in March.

Denmark were pushed to the limit but got the point they needed to seal a place at <a href="https://www.wionews.com/sports/italy-put-nine-past-armenia-to-finish-with-perfect-record-263045">Euro 2020</a> as Group D runners-up with a hard-fought 1-1 draw in Ireland on Monday that consigned the hosts to the playoffs for the third successive tournament.

A 73rd minute Martin Braithwaite goal set the 1992 European champions on their way to celebrating qualification in Dublin for the second tournament in a row after a 5-1 win almost two years ago to the day had sent them to last year's World Cup.

But they had to survive a late onslaught when Ireland, the better side throughout, scored only their seventh goal in eight qualifiers when Matt Doherty headed home after 85 minutes though they could not get the win they needed to qualify automatically.

"We were terrible, we just couldn't get going... But I don't really care right now," Denmark goalkeeper Kasper Schmeichel said after celebrating with the fans they will play in front of next year as Copenhagen, like Dublin, is among the host cities.

"It means the world because we're a very small nation and the chance of us playing home games in a major tournament are so small. To be able to give our fans that kind of experience is amazing, it's unique," he added on Sky Sports.

While no other team in contention across the 10 groups had hit the net as infrequently, Ireland possessed one of the best defensive records, so chances were unsurprisingly few and far between in the first half.

It took 34 minutes for a shot on target and when the ball fell fortuitously to an open Conor Hourihane on the edge of the Denmark box, the Aston Villa midfielder should have done better than stroke the ball straight at Schmeichel.

Denmark, who lost midfielder Thomas Delaney and striker Andreas Cornelius to injuries in the first 30 minutes, were a shadow of the side that ran riot in Dublin two years earlier but their opponents were far more disciplined this time.

Having drawn four of the other five meetings with Ireland in the last two years, the unbeaten Danes appeared happy to settle for another stalemate until Braithwaite ghosted in behind Doherty to nudge his side into the lead against the run of play.

The otherwise impressive Doherty's first international goal set up a grandstand finish but that was all the home side could muster as the Danes finished three points ahead of the Irish in second place to join group winners Switzerland in the finals.

The Swiss beat Gibraltar 6-1 to clinch top spot by a point.

Ireland must wait until the playoffs in March to see if they can follow suit via a route they have successfully navigated in the last two European Championships.

"I said before the game if the players give me everything and leave it on the pitch, I've got to take what happens and I think they left everything and a bit more to be quite honest," Ireland manager Mick McCarthy told Irish broadcaster RTE.

"I've just said to the lads, play like that (in the playoff) and we'll win it."
