A bridge connecting two states in Brazil's northern and northeastern regions collapsed on Sunday as vehicles were crossing, killing at least one person and spilling sulfuric acid into the Tocantins River.

The National Department of Transport Infrastructure said the central span of the 533-metre (0.3-mile) bridge, linking the cities of Estreito in Maranhao state and Aguiarnopolis in Tocantins state, gave away in the afternoon. A tanker truck carrying the acid plunged into the water, officials said.

According to the fire department, one person has been confirmed dead and another was rescued alive.

Aguiarnopolis city councilman Elias Junior was recording a video asking authorities to fix problems with the bridge, which he said could no longer handle the heavy trucks passing over it. As he pointed to a large crack on the shoulder of the bridge, the structure collapsed in front of him, causing him to run backwards. Reuters could not immediately independently verify the video. Junior did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

Preliminary estimates indicate at least 11 people were involved in the accident with two trucks, a car, and a motorcycle falling into the river, which is more than 50 metres (164 feet) deep. By early evening, rescue divers halted their efforts after identifying that one submerged tanker was leaking sulfuric acid, said the fire department from Tocantins.

Bridge collapse in Brazil: Sulfuric acid spills into river, triggers ecological crisis

New Delhi, India
Climate change is a term that has become increasingly common over the years. With many heatwaves, natural disasters and extreme weather conditions being attributed to the climate crisis, it is hard to ignore its grim presence in our lives. But what does it mean exactly?

What is climate change?

Climate change is a long-term shift in the weather patterns and temperatures globally. While it can also happen naturally, human activities like the burning of fossil fuels have been the driving cause of it since the 1800s.
According to the United Nations, the average temperature of the Earth’s surface has surged by 1.2 degrees Celsius. Experts have warned of limiting global temperature rise to not more than 1.5 degrees Celsius to prevent catastrophic environmental impacts, with various international agreements and frameworks in place, such as the Paris Agreement and the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change. However, projections based on current global policies indicate the Earth could experience warming of up to 3.1 degrees Celsius by the end of the century.

Extreme weather events wreaked havoc globally

The year 2024 saw deadly natural disasters fueled by climate change. Increasingly frequent heatwaves, wildfires, hurricanes, droughts and floods left thousands dead and millions affected with damages in billions.
The Atlantic hurricane season recorded 18 named storms, including 11 hurricanes–five of which were Category 3 or higher. Deadly hurricanes Beryl, Debby, Helene, and Milton claimed over 330 lives and caused damage costing hundreds of billions of dollars.
More than 670 people died in Papua New Guinea after an earthquake and landslide hit northern parts of the country. Floods and landslides also wreaked havoc in Southern Brazil killing nearly 60.
In Afghanistan and Pakistan, more than 300 people died in May when flash flooding damaged or completely destroyed at least 6,000 homes after heavy rainfall.
In southern India, landslides in Kerala followed by torrential rain resulted in nearly 400 deaths in the Wayanad district. Super typhoon Yagi killed nearly 600 people in Southeast Asia in September. Flash floods in southeast Spain and western Europe in late October resulted in over 200 deaths.
Climate change also increased droughts, torrential rainfall, and heat that damage crops resulting in food shortages, increased prices and losses for the agriculture industry globally.

Deadly heatwaves claimed lives across the world

While natural disasters resulted in an increased death toll this year, heatwaves across the Earth were felt by the majority of people during the summer of 2024.
Most parts of the world experienced record-high temperatures and heatwaves that claimed thousands of lives, although the exact number cannot be determined.
According to the World Meteorological Organisation, the global mean surface air temperature was 1.54 degrees Celsius above the pre-industrial average from January to September.
July 22 marked the hottest day on Earth after the global average temperature reached a record high of 17.15 degrees Celsius, according to NASA, the previous record being 17.09 degrees Celsius observed a day earlier on July 21.
Hundreds of deaths have been reported across Asia due to heatwaves, with people most impacted in countries including India, Bangladesh, Thailand, Philippines, Cambodia, and Myanmar after experiencing temperatures well above 40 degrees Celsius for several days due to climate change and El Niño effect.
A report released by HeatWatch claims that India recorded over 700 deaths and over 40,000 heatstroke cases attributed to climate change.
According to reports, over 1,300 people lost their lives during the Hajj pilgrimage in Saudi Arabia in June after temperatures soared to 52 degrees Celsius.
Similar trends were seen in Western African countries like Nigeria and Ghana which witnessed an increase in patients with heat-related illnesses after temperatures recorded over 40 degrees Celsius in February. Australia also experienced an intense heatwave that affected several areas of the country with temperatures above 45 degrees Celsius.
Southern and Southeastern nations of Europe recorded over 19 deaths due to a heatwave after several regions recorded scorching high temperatures, especially in Greece and Italy, where most fatalities were recorded.
Southern and Western regions of the United States were severely hit by heatwaves, recording over 1,000 deaths, with the hottest temperature recorded at 54 degrees Celsius at Furnace Creek, Death Valley.
Mexico recorded over 150 deaths that could be linked to heat-related illnesses.

2024: A wake-up call

The number of lives lost due to just weather events directly is alarming. Many other innocent lives are lost due to climate change indirectly when it takes the form of deadly illnesses such as heart diseases, respiratory diseases due to air pollution, stroke, cancer and many other leading causes that can be linked to climate change.
The year 2024 should be a wake-up call for governments, policymakers, and us as individuals. Climate change is a pressing issue and we need to look for solutions that can only be addressed by global cooperation and commitment.
Global bodies and governments should implement strict environmental measures like transitioning to renewable energy sources and reducing greenhouse gas emissions from burning fossil fuels.
Although this requires significant investments, we cannot ignore the immediate need to adapt to sustainable solutions and technologies to reduce our carbon footprint.
Looking back at 2024, if we don’t take urgent actions, one day our planet may not be fit for humanity to live on.
Every life matters. Every action counts, even at an individual level.

After the devastating floods in Malaysia, which led to the evacuation of tens of thousands of people, health volunteers are now preparing for a surge in waterborne diseases. While the water in the worst-affected areas of Kenton, on Malaysia's northeastern coast, has receded, government data shows that more than 4,000 people still remain in temporary shelters. Concerns persist about the potential for a second wave of flooding this week. Watch in for more details!

Malaysia Floods: Health Volunteers Worried About Waterborne Illness After Floods

Pacific leaders at the UN climate summit in Azerbaijan are criticising Australia's push to expand its gas industry in Western Australia, warning it could emit 125 times more greenhouse gases annually than their nations combined.

As the second week of Cop29 unfolds in Baku, officials from Vanuatu and Tuvalu urged Australia to halt new fossil fuel developments, including extending the lifespan of Woodside's North West Shelf gas facility to 2070.

A call for accountability

Ralph Regenvanu, Vanuatu's special envoy for climate change, accused Australia of hypocrisy, saying it cannot claim climate leadership while expanding fossil fuel projects.

"As the world’s third largest fossil fuel exporter, the Australian government is exporting climate destruction overseas, including to Pacific nations like Vanuatu, who experience the most devastating impacts of the climate crisis, despite contributing the least."

"This is climate injustice," he stated.

Regenvanu pressed Australia to uphold its commitment from last year's Cop28 in Dubai to transition away from fossil fuels.

Maina Talia, Tuvalu's climate change minister, echoed these concerns, highlighting that limiting global warming to 1.5°C is not just a number but a "lifeline for Pacific communities facing rising seas, accelerating extreme weather disasters and the erosion of our cultures".

Spain Recovers From Deadliest Floods in Modern History

The European Union's Copernicus Climate Change Service (C3S) has declared that 2024 is “virtually certain” to set a record as the hottest year globally, beating 2023's record as the world's warmest since records began.

This comes just before the COP29 climate summit in Azerbaijan, where leaders will push for significant funding boosts to combat climate change.

The hottest year on record

C3S data from January to October shows global temperatures climbing so steeply that only an unlikely, drastic cooling in the last months could prevent 2024 from setting a new high.

Talking to Reuters, C3S Director Carlo Buontempo said, “The fundamental, underpinning cause of this year's record is climate change.”

For the first time, Earth in 2024 will cross the 1.5 °C warming threshold compared to the 1850-1990 pre-industrial levels. This milestone—once considered a distant risk—is now effectively here, warn scientists.

"It's basically around the corner now," Buontempo said.

Climate scientist Sonia Seneviratne from ETH Zurich said she was not surprised by the fact that we were close to reaching the milestone. Echoing the urgency of COP29, she warned that the world's limited actions on carbon emissions are endangering the Paris Agreement’s targets, originally set to prevent average warming from exceeding 1.5 °C by 2030.

Spain Floods: Citizens Protest Against Government

Spain's national guard on Tuesday asked relatives of people missing in deadly floods to provide DNA samples to identify bodies, as Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez said he was earmarking 10.6 billion euros ($11.6 billion) to help victims.

More than 200 people died after heavy rains last week caused waterways to overflow, creating flash floods that surged through suburbs south of the city of Valencia, sweeping away cars and bridges and flooding properties and underground car parks.

"There are still missing persons to be located, homes and businesses destroyed, buried under the mud and many people suffering severe shortages," Sanchez said in a press conference in Madrid. "We have to keep working."

The government has declined to say how many people are missing almost a week on from the disaster. Interior Minister Fernando Grande-Marlaska said only that it was a "significant number" and that in the absence of clear information, it was "best not to specify".

At least 217 people died in Valencia, Castile La Mancha and Andalusia, but only 111 have been identified so far.

In the face of criticism and anger at the slow response to the disaster, Sanchez said the government had deployed nearly 15,000 police and military to help clear flood-affected areas, along with hundreds of forestry officials, forensic scientists, customs agents and heavy machinery to clear roads and rubble.
