The federal court determined in April of last year that Google had violated consumer protection regulations by tricking some local customers to believe the corporation was not using mobile devices running Android operating systems to acquire personal information about their whereabouts.

With a user's location history set to "off" but their browser and app activity set to "on" and one of Google's apps being used, the issue in the case was whether it was sufficiently apparent that Google would still collect and access location data in certain circumstances.

The business was also found to have violated two more consumer statutes, including one pertaining to conduct that could deceive the public and the other involving making false statements about the performance qualities of service. When the decision was made, the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission said it sent a clear message to digital platforms telling them to be transparent with customers about what is happening with their data.

A brief federal court hearing on Friday was informed that the parties had presented a joint statement to Justice Thomas Thawley and had agreed on a A$60 million penalty as being "fair and reasonable." The court heard that there may still be questions regarding whether the punishment rendered future behaviour "economically irrational" and if the punishment was appropriate.&nbsp;

Before postponing the case until later on Friday, Thawley congratulated the parties and stated that he was certain the fine was within a reasonable range.

The Commission said the collusion concerned optical disk drives for laptops and desktops produced by Dell and Hewlett Packard.

The General Court in 2019 agreed with the Commission's finding of a cartel and threw out the companies' challenge.

A man from the UK was handed a hefty fine for eating McDonald's meal at the parking zone of Starbucks.

Bob Spink, a 50-year-old diver, left fumed when he received a letter to his residence informing him about his 100 pounds&nbsp;(US $123) fine, despite not even leaving his car while having his meal, The Metro newspaper reported.

“We had only bought a £12 order from McDonald’s and the car park was entirely full, so we parked in Starbucks to eat as there was plenty of space,’ Spink was quoted as saying.

“It just feels like legalised theft, I haven’t done anything wrong legally.”

Bob visited McDonald's in Fabian Way with his girlfriend. When couldn’t find a parking space at the burger joint, they decided to stop at the nearby Starbucks parking lot to quickly finish up their meal.

“I was baffled by it, we have just moved here and it’s something you can’t ignore as it only gets worse and increases the fee,” he added.

The letter he received said that his fine can be reduced to £60 if he pays within 14 days.

&nbsp;I don't understand what they are trying to achieve and it doesn't look great for the chain to use parking enforcement with such tactics," he said.

According to Wales Online, the parking zone of the aforementioned Starbucks branch is handled by National Parking Enforcement Ltd (NPE).

The widow of former Zimbabwean president Robert Mugabe has challenged a fine of five cows and two goats over the alleged improper burial of her husband.&nbsp;

A Delhi court Friday allowed 34 foreign nationals from Thailand to walk free on payment of different fines, after they accepted mild charges under the plea bargain process, related to various violations including visa norms while attending Tablighi Jamaat congregation here during the COVID-19 lockdown.

Metropolitan Magistrate Gagandeep Jindal allowed the foreigners to walk free on payment of a fine of $80 (INR 6,000) each, said advocate, Ashima Mandla appearing for them.

The court directed the foreigners to deposit their fines at the PM CARES Fund, since the foreigners have been found guilty of violating government orders pertaining to COVID-19 pandemic.

Google has received a record fine from Belgium's data protection authority (APD) of 600,000 euros for not complying with European rules on a person's "right to be forgotten" online.

Google failed to remove links from its search results to articles which APD said were "obsolete" and damaging to the reputation of a person with a public profile in Belgium.

The news articles, which appeared in results linked to the person's name, related to unfounded complaints of harassment. Google was "negligent" in deciding not to remove the links, given that the company had evidence that the facts were irrelevant and out of date, APD said.

Google said it intends to appeal the decision in court, and had worked hard to "strike a sensible, principled balance between people's rights of access to information and privacy."&nbsp;

"We didn't believe this case met the European Court of Justice's criteria for delisting published journalism from search — we thought it was in the public's interest that this reporting remain searchable," a Google spokesperson said.

A four-member committee formed by <a href="http://www.wionews.com/india-news/national-green-tribunal-slaps-rs-25-crore-fine-on-delhi-government-over-air-pollution-181132">the National Green Tribunal</a> has recommended Rs 171.34 crore fine on German auto major Volkswagen as "health damages" for causing air pollution in Delhi due to excess nitrogen oxide (NOx) emissions.

The expert committee in its report has estimated that Volkswagen cars released approximately 48.678 tonnes of NOx in 2016 in the national capital.

"Estimated cost of heath damage due to additional NOx emissions from the Volkswagen group vehicles is approximately Rs 171.34 crore using a metro city i.E Delhi as a base. The value may be considered conservative due to lack of methodologies for calculating the overall impact of nitrogen oxide on the environment in India and hence only health damages are valued."

"Further the valuation is for Delhi city considering that the value of NOx is 435 tonnes is released in the city. This is assumed because lack of data on the geographical locations and plying regions of Volkswagen vehicles which have caused the damage and for all the years which have been considered for damage," the committee has said in its report.

Nitrogen oxide is a smog-forming pollutant linked to heart and lung disease.

The four-member panel comprised ARAI director Rashmi Urdhwareshe, Dr Nitin Labhsetwar, who is chief scientist of CSIR-NEERI, Ramakant Singh director, Ministry of Heavy Industries and Prashant Gargava, member secretary of CPCB.

The panel was formed by the NGT on November 16 last year to give its expert opinion on the subject whether the manufacturer has exceeded the prescribed environmental norms and fair estimate of the damage caused to the environment.

The committee has told the NGT that automobiles are a major source of nitrogen oxide emissions and nitrogen dioxide is the most prevalent source form of nitrogen oxide.

It said that longer exposures to elevated concentrations of nitrogen dioxide may contribute to the development of asthma and potentially increase susceptibility to respiratory infections and nitrogen oxide gases react to form smog and acid rain and are central to the formation of fine particles (PM) and ground-level ozone, both of which are associated with adverse health effects.

The panel calculated the morbidity by using the estimates of the cost of treatment and related expenses under the heading of the cost of illness and the disability-adjusted life years (DALY) from the WHO database.

"The valuation is based on per capita income of the individuals in the city. For mortality, value of statistical life is used for monetary estimation," it said.

The penalty was determined on the basis of the 3.27 lakh Volkswagen cars in India that had deceit software installed.

"The total health damage due to air pollution in city is around Rs 157.80 crore. Further, if this cost was to be charged bin 2018, an average inflation of 4.2 per cent is to be applied for two years (after 2016), which comes out to be Rs 171.34 crore," the committee said in its report.

The matter is scheduled to come up for hearing on January 17 before a bench headed by NGT Chairperson Justice Adarsh Kumar Goel.

The green panel had earlier said the use of 'cheat device' by Volkswagen in diesel cars in India leads to an inference of environmental damage and asked the German car maker to deposit an interim amount of Rs 100 crore with the Central Pollution Control Board.

The NGT said that even though the standards may be stricter in other countries, "the very fact of deceit devices being installed by the manufacturers calls for an inference of prima-facie violation of environment".

It had said that even if there is 100 per cent recall, for the past violation of norms, the auto manufacturer cannot avoid its responsibility.

In the latest blow, Facebook is now expected to be fined a whopping US $1.6 billion by the European Union (EU) privacy watchdog due to the latest data breach which exposed the private information of at least 50 million users, reports said.&nbsp;

The latest data breach is said to have violated the EU's new privacy law called the General Data Protection Regulation, which came into effect in May.&nbsp;The new law by the EU aims to safeguard users data for people within the European Union.&nbsp;

In the biggest-ever security breach after Cambridge Analytica scandal, Facebook on Friday admitted hackers broke into nearly 50 million users' accounts by stealing their "access tokens" or digital keys.

The executive also allegedly funneled bribes from company contractors into the campaign of an unnamed Brazilian politician who had power over where Petrobras could build refineries.&nbsp;

Petrobras admitted some executives funneled payments to politicians and political parties, and that the company failed to keep accurate books and records about property and equipment, as required by law.

The settlement announced Thursday involved a "non-prosecution agreement," meaning no charges will be brought against the company. Prosecutors may separately take action against individuals.

More than 40 countries including the United States have criminalized paying bribes abroad to win business, which authorities say defrauds investors while promoting corruption and political instability.

Gadkari said he felt &ldquo;ashamed&rdquo; that absence of parking lots outside his own Ministry forced &ldquo;ambassadors&rdquo; and &ldquo;big people&rdquo; to park on road blocking the way to Parliament.&nbsp;

The Transport Minister also said that it took him nine months to get approval for a &#39;simple automated parking lot&#39; from the then Urban Development Minister Venkaiah Naidu.&nbsp;

The automated parking lot is being carried out by NHIDCL and will consist of seven floors, enabling it to accommodate around 112 cars.&nbsp;

Gadkari had earlier floated the idea of rewarding &nbsp;Rs. 200 to citizens who click pictures of wrongly parked cars, claiming that it was his personal view and it can only be enforced by putting the necessary infrastructure in place.&nbsp;
