"I think we will almost certainly require a booster sometime within a year or so after getting the primary because the durability protection against coronavirus is generally not lifelong similar to measles," he said.

Pfizer Chief Executive Officer Albert Bourla at the event said there is likely a need for booster shots between 8-12 months. In April, Bourla told CNBC people will "likely" need a third booster dose of COVID-19 vaccines within 12 months.

However, getting someone 'vaccinated now' does not solve today's problem, he noted, adding that it helps prevent a problem several weeks from now. &nbsp;

"But the solution immediately right now is, and I know India is already doing it, so I'm not telling you something that you are not already doing. A few days ago, I recommended and I believe at least parts of India are doing it, that you shut down the country in lockdown," he said. &nbsp;

"Because other countries, including for example what China did last year, what Australia did when they had an outbreak, what New Zealand did, what other countries did is to completely lock down for a relatively limited period of time. You don't have to lock down for six months. You can lock down for a few weeks. Because when you walk down, it is well known, with the experience of other countries that locking down, definitely interferes with the dynamics of the viral outbreak and you could interfere with the continuity and the transmission of infection," Dr Fauci said. &nbsp;

He also recommended taking the help of the armed forces to immediately build makeshift field hospitals.&nbsp;

This vaccine has brought in hopes of ramping up the mass vaccination programme as over 65 million people have already been vaccinated by the Pfizer and Moderna vaccines. US to get 4 million J&J vaccine by Tuesday; Fauci hopes to vaccinate children by 2021 end

The United States is being criticised for its handling of the pandemic, which has led to the deaths of 390,000 people in the country.

Fauci said there could be a billion vaccine doses available by the end of 2021, and that he is hopeful the world could get past the pandemic that has claimed more than 700,000 lives worldwide by then, with the help of a vaccine.

U.S. Secretary of Health and Human Services Alex Azar said last month the U.S. would have hundreds of millions of vaccine doses by early in 2021.

Those goals are only possible because drugmakers have agreed to manufacture large supplies of their vaccines even before they know whether they work in order to save time.

“The federal government has put more than one egg in the basket,” Fauci said. “We have a pretty comprehensive portfolio that’s going to subsequently be going into clinical trials.”

He said there might be an indication that at least one vaccine works and is safe by year end.

“I’m cautiously optimistic that we will have a vaccine that’s effective enough to get approved,” he said.

That will not happen because of any pressure to have a vaccine available in time for the Nov. 3 presidential election, he said. Health regulators have promised “they are not going to let political considerations interfere” with the need to deliver a safe COVID-19 vaccine, Fauci said. [nL1N2F72GO]

Fauci’s interview with Reuters came on the same day Trump said in an interview with Fox News that the virus is “going away. It will go away like things go away.”

Fauci offered a more mixed assessment, saying some parts of the country had done well in containing the spread of the virus, while others were “on fire.”

“I hope, and feel it’s possible, that by the time we get through 2021 and go around for another cycle that we’ll have this under control,” he said.

The United States is committed to spending billions of dollars on vaccines being produced by companies including Johnson &amp; Johnson, Moderna Inc, Pfizer Inc, Novavax Inc&nbsp;and Sanofi SA, employing a variety of technologies.

Fauci said he did not favor one approach over any other.

Fauci raised concerns after Russia and China, both, claimed to be almost ready with the vaccines.

Russia said it hopes to be the first country to develop a COVID-19 vaccine. The European country is hoping to have the vaccine ready by September.

Last month, Chinese media reported that a coronavirus vaccine developed&nbsp;by CanSino Biologics was being used to immunize the Chinese military. However, questions were raised on this decision as the said vaccine had not yet completed its final stages of testing.

Conversely, while US coronavirus mortality rates have declined recently, they are not the lowest in the world. At least 14 have lower death rates than the US.

Fauci also said he does not anticipate a federal coronavirus vaccine mandate in the US once one is made available.

He also explained he "could see individual institutions mandating a vaccine" but not at the nationwide level "merely because of all the situations you have encroaching upon a person's freedom to make their own choice of their own health."

While Fauci did not publicly comment on the contradiction between his comments and that of the president, he said he thinks "any politicization of anything that's a public health matter has negative consequences, and that's the reason why we try as best as we can not to let political issues get involved."

Fauci stressed the importance of face masks in combating the virus -- something he said he's "strongly in favour" of mandating, just not on the federal level.

White House officials are also now discussing taking a more active role in encouraging masks. After appearing at a string of events without social distancing and where masks were scarce, Trump's campaign said Sunday it would host a New Hampshire campaign rally where attendees will be "provided a face mask that they are strongly encouraged to wear."
