A spectacular strike from Mohamed Salah helped Liverpool maintain their two-point lead over Manchester City in the Premier League title race with a 2-0 win over Chelsea at Anfield on Sunday.

City won 3-1 at Crystal Palace earlier on Sunday meaning Liverpool have 85 points with four games to go and City are on 83 with an additional match to play.

After a tight and tactical first half, Liverpool broke through in the 51st minute when Jordan Henderson picked out Sadio Mane at the back post and the Senegalese forward confidently headed home.

Anfield erupted two minutes later when Mohamed Salah scored a sensational second -- the Egyptian receiving the ball on the right flank and cutting inside before unleashing an unstoppable drive from 25 metres out into the far, top corner.

Chelsea responded positively, though, with David Luiz picking out Eden Hazard with a ball over the top, the Belgian beating the advancing Alisson Becker only to see his shot bounce out off the post.

Moments later, Becker then had to be alert to keep out a Hazard shot from a Willian cross as Chelsea searched in vain for a way back.

Mohamed Salah screamer gives Liverpool vital win against Chelsea

Manchester City forward Raheem Sterling struck twice as the Premier League champions beat Crystal Palace 3-1 at Selhurst Park on Sunday to go top of the table and heap pressure on title rivals Liverpool.

Victory left City on 83 points from 33 matches, one point above Liverpool although the Merseyside club can leapfrog Pep Guardiola's team with a win over third-placed Chelsea later on Sunday.

The victory was the ninth straight win for City in the Premier League.

Having missed an easy chance early on, Sterling put City ahead in the 15th minute when he ran on to Kevin De Bruyne's inch-perfect pass from behind the halfway line and fired past goalkeeper Vicente Guaita.

The England international added a second for his 17th league goal of the season after the break, meeting Leroy Sane's first-time cross into the box with a calm left-footed finish that wrong-footed Guaita as it rolled in.

Palace ensured an entertaining finish to the contest when Luka Milivojevic scored from a free kick with nine minutes to go after midfielder James McArthur was brought down on the edge of the penalty area.

City, however, sealed the deal with their third of the match as De Bruyne latched on to a poor pass from defender Aaron Wan-Bissaka before feeding substitute Gabriel Jesus who finished emphatically.

"We controlled the ball really well but one moment in the game and they are back in it. But we responded again and got the third goal," said Sterling, who added his belief that the title race will go down to the wire.

"100 percent the way Liverpool have been playing. It will go down to the wire. I don't see us slowing down now. Liverpool have a great squad, great self-belief, but so do we," said the former Liverpool forward.

Pep Guardiola's side now face a crucial ten days starting with a home game against Tottenham Hotspur on Wednesday in their Champions League quarter-final second leg, trailing 1-0 from the opening game.

City then play Spurs at the Etihad again, in the league, on Saturday before the Manchester derby at Old Trafford on April 24.

Raheem Sterling double helps Manchester City beat Crystal Palace and top table

Two Paul Pogba penalties earned lethargic Manchester United a 2-1 victory over West Ham United in the Premier League at Old Trafford on Saturday.

Having lost five of their previous six matches in all competitions, United looked short on confidence early on against West Ham, who had a goal ruled out in the 10th minute when Felipe Anderson was adjudged to be offside when finding the net.

That tight call went United's way, and soon after they were in front when Pogba hammered home a 19th-minute penalty, much to the relief of home crowd.

Even with the lead, United remained sluggish and did not muster another shot on target for the rest of the first half during which they saw less of the ball than their visitors.

The interval did little to rejuvenate United with Anderson's first goal in 14 league games drawing the visitors level just four minutes into the second period.

Michail Antonio twice went close to completing the turnaround for West Ham, but United stole all three points after Pogba again converted from the spot 10 minutes from time.

The win ensured United climbed above Arsenal into fifth place, two points behind Chelsea, while West Ham stayed 11th.

"They played better than us, it is fair to say, I don't think anyone will disagree," United manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer said. "We got away with it. Sometimes we have lost when we should have won, so over a season it evens itself out."

Marcus Rashford was not fit enough to start for United, with Solskjaer making five changes from the side beaten by Barcelona in the Champions League in midweek, but the reshuffle did little to lift United as the Hammers controlled the opening exchanges.

Anderson sent the visiting supporters into raptures after converting former United striker Javier Hernandez's knockdown, but the linesman's flag denied the Brazilian.

United, though, were gifted the opportunity to break the deadlock through Pogba after Robert Snodgrass fouled Juan Mata in the penalty area.

West Ham, still on top after the break, equalised through Anderson, who lost his marker Marcos Rojo to fire Manuel Lanzini's cross past De Gea.

Substitute Antonio hit the bar with a thunderous strike from distance and was then denied by a brilliant De Gea save.

That stop proved crucial as Anthony Martial then raced clear before being upended in the area, with Pogba stepping up to fire in his seventh successful penalty of the season.

"We deserved more," West Ham manager Manuel Pellegrini said. "It was a pleasure for me to see my team play like this against Manchester United in their own stadium."

<a href="https://www.wionews.com/search?q=Tottenham+Hotspur">Tottenham Hotspur</a>'s Brazil forward Lucas Moura struck a superb hat-trick in a 4-0 win over relegated Huddersfield Town on Saturday to bolster the home side's hopes of a top-four finish in the Premier League.

Spurs were without the injured Harry Kane and Dele Alli but Lucas's treble, which included two goals in the final few minutes, and an early Victor Wanyama goal, were just reward for a dominant display against the league's bottom side.

Lucas, who celebrated with his one-year-old son Miguel on the pitch at the end, said, "I practise all the time and I'm so happy today because I did very well, good passes, good finishes and if we play like this as a team we can win a lot of things."

The win in the early game took Spurs up to third place, a point ahead of Chelsea and four points clear of fifth-placed fellow London rivals Arsenal, who have a game in hand.

Tottenham made seven changes from the side that beat Manchester City 1-0 at home in the Champions League in midweek, with an eye on the quarter-final second leg on Wednesday.

"It's so important because seven changes I think builds up confidence in the squad and confidence in the team," Spurs manager Mauricio Pochettino told reporters. "It's going to be a tough race to the end (to finish in the top four)".

Wanyama put Spurs ahead after 24 minutes with a fine individual goal after dribbling around goalkeeper Ben Hamer and tucking the ball into an empty net from a Ben Davies pass.

Three minutes later the hosts scored again thanks to a fierce right-foot drive by Lucas that flew underneath Hamer after the excellent Moussa Sissoko set him up on the break.

Spurs' Fernando Llorente hit the bar after halftime and was unlucky not to get on the scoresheet after a lively display. Huddersfield's Juninho Bacuna had a late free-kick tipped on to the bar before Christian Eriksen hit the post on the counter.

Six minutes later Lucas controlled Eriksen's cross and fired into the bottom corner past the helpless Hamer before rounding off the win by smashing into the top corner in stoppage time after being fed by substitute Son Heung-min.

"Now we have a good battle in Manchester; we need from now to recover for this game and prepare very well," added Lucas. "It will be so hard there but if we play like we did today we can go there and get a good result and we can qualify."

Chelsea midfielder Danny Drinkwater has no future at the Premier League club because he is not suited to their style of play, manager Maurizio Sarri said on Wednesday.&nbsp;

Drinkwater joined Chelsea from Leicester City for a reported $45.84 million in 2017 but last played for the London club in the Community Shield in August.&nbsp;

The midfielder was charged with drink driving earlier this week and was left out of Chelsea's squad for their trip to face Slavia Prague in the Europa League quarter-finals later on Thursday.&nbsp;

"(Drinkwater) has never played because... he's not suitable to my system, to my way of playing," Sarri told reporters.&nbsp;

"Maybe I'm wrong, but it's my opinion. I spoke with him in August, when the market was still open, and said he should look for something different because he wouldn't play. And I told him the reasons, my reasons.&nbsp;

"I don't know (why he decided to stay). Probably he hoped we could change the system. I have a very good relationship with him because, in my opinion, he's a good boy... but he's not suitable for me."&nbsp;

Sarri plans to make five or six changes for the Europa League match and says his side will need to be on their toes to get a result.&nbsp;

"In my opinion, this is a very dangerous match for us," he added. Slavia are a fast team, so we need to be very, very compact and defend really very well.&nbsp;

"They are dangerous, especially on crosses where they attack the box with five or six players, and are dangerous on counter-attacks. So it won't be easy for us."&nbsp;

Arsenal head coach Unai Emery believes that his side lost a "great opportunity" as their hopes of a top-four finish in the Premier League were dented after <a href="https://www.wionews.com/sports/premier-league-phil-jagielka-the-hero-as-everton-dent-arsenals-hopes-208639">losing 0-1 to Everton</a> on Sunday at Goodison Park.&nbsp;

Everton captain Phil Jagielka took advantage of an unexpected late recall to score the winner. The result moves Everton up to ninth but Arsenal missed the chance of going third in the table.&nbsp;

"We lost a big opportunity and also today we didn't show our best performance and we didn't show our capacity to impose our gameplan against them," he told journalists.&nbsp;

Unai Emery's side stay on 63 points, one behind Spurs, level with fifth-placed Chelsea and two clear of Manchester United in an increasingly tight battle for the Champions League berths.&nbsp;

Chelsea boss <a href="https://www.wionews.com/search?q=Maurizio+Sarri">Maurizio Sarri</a> expects Olivier Giroud to stay at the club next season and said he believes the French striker wants to remain at Stamford Bridge.

Giroud's contract expires in June but Chelsea have an option to extend the deal by a further 12 months.

The 32-year-old, who joined from Arsenal last January, said last month that he wanted to move back to France after growing frustrated by a lack of playing time since Chelsea signed Argentine striker Gonzalo Higuain in the recent transfer window.

When Sarri was asked whether he wanted to retain the Frenchman's services, he said: "Yes, of course.

"I know the club have an option for another season, so I think he will remain. Do I get the impression he wants to stay? I think so."

Giroud, who helped France win the World Cup last year, has started only seven Premier League games this season. However, he has started the majority of Chelsea's Europa League matches and is the competition's top scorer with nine goals.

Chelsea, who were hit with a one-year transfer ban in February, lodged an appeal to FIFA's Appeal Committee and the case will be heard on April 11.

Jesus launched himself into the air to connect decisively in the third minute but City never hit top gear and they rather laboured to victory in an instantly forgettable match.

Nevertheless, after bagging the League Cup, being locked in a titanic battle with Liverpool for the Premier League title and in the Champions League quarter-finals, Pep Guardiola's side remain on course for an unprecedented clean sweep.

It was a tired-looking display against Premier League relegation battlers Brighton, though, and City will need to rediscover their spark ahead of Tuesday's trip to Tottenham Hotspur in the first leg of their Champions League last-eight tie.

Guardiola was quick to play down the "Q" word.

"My opinion is that nobody has done it (won the quadruple) so why can we do it?," Guardiola said.

"It is almost impossible to achieve everything, that is the truth. Our fans will come, more than today, for the final, we are losing players every game but still we will try to do it.

"I am happy to be in the final, we extend our season by one more week and we are happy for that."

Back at Wembley where they beat Chelsea on penalties to win the League Cup in February, City were huge favourites to get past a Brighton side with other things on their mind.

Whatever plan Brighton boss Chris Hughton had cooked up to stop a City side who had won 20 of their last 22 matches in all competitions was in tatters after only three minutes.

In one of the only fluid moves they put together all afternoon at a less-than-full Wembley, Kevin de Bruyne whipped in a superb low cross and Jesus arrived at the far post to plant a diving header past Brighton keeper Matthew Ryan.

The Brighton fans, who greatly outnumbered City's in the 71,000 crowd, must have feared the worst in the south coast's club's first FA Cup semi-final since 1983 when they beat Sheffield Wednesday before losing the final to Manchester United in a replay after the first game ended 2-2.

But the onslaught never arrived.

And had City fullback Kyle Walker been shown a red card during the first half after a clash with Alireza Jahanbakhsh the outcome could have been different.

Reacted Angrily

Walker reacted angrily after being shoved in the back and as the players squared up face to face, he appeared to move his head into Jahanbakhsh forehead.

The incident went to the VAR, which is being used in the FA Cup, but referee Anthony Taylor was not required to send Walker off, although he was replaced at halftime by Danilo.

"I have seen it a few times and my opinion is it is a red card," Hughton said. "If Alireza goes down clutching his head it would have been a different outcome."

Brighton gradually grew in belief and but for a superb goal-line clearance by Aymeric Laporte they could have drawn level, the Frenchman hacking clear just when Glenn Murray seemed poised to equalise early in the second half.

Hughton's side caused the occasional problem from set-pieces and with City unusually lethargic the result was never in the bag until referee Anthony Taylor blew for fulltime.

City will face the winners of Watford and Wolverhampton Wanderers who meet in the second semi-final on Sunday.

Mohamed Salah's 50th goal for Liverpool is 'incredible', says Jurgen Klopp

Late goals by Mohamed Salah and Jordan Henderson earned Liverpool a crucial 3-1 victory at Southampton to move them back to the top of the Premier League on Friday.

For the second week running Liverpool looked like losing ground on Manchester City in a titanic title race, but once again Juergen Klopp's side would not be denied as they edged a step closer to a first league title since 1990.

With games running out they lead City by two points, although Pep Guardiola's champions have a game in hand.

Locked at 1-1 Liverpool were laying siege to the Southampton goal but it was Salah, who had not scored for eight games, who provided the moment of magic they desperately required in the 80th minute, racing away to score a majestic solo goal.

It was Salah's 50th Premier League goal for Liverpool and six minutes later Henderson, on as a substitute, wrapped it up with a close-range finish.

Shane Long had made it a nail-biting night for Liverpool's massed ranks of supporters when he fired relegation-threatened Southampton ahead in the ninth minute.

But Liverpool recovered from a surprisingly sluggish start and Naby Keita's header, his first goal for the club, levelled the scores before halftime.

Victory lifted Liverpool to 82 points from 33 games, with City on 80 from 32.

"It was very big. Every game is massive. We've got to win every game. I thought we showed great character in the first half," Henderson told Sky Sports. "It was a big performance in the second half and a big result."

Liverpool needed a stoppage-time winner to beat Tottenham Hotspur 2-1 at Anfield last weekend and they were forced to do things the hard way again at St Mary's.

They were caught cold early on and Long punished them, calmly firing home after Ryan Bertrand's cross was flicked on.

It could have been worse with Long almost making it 2-0 but Keita's header calmed the nerves in the away ranks.

Liverpool dominated after the break but Southampton defended tenaciously, even if they were lucky when Maya Yoshida appeared to bring down Keita in the penalty area.

With the clock ticking down and Southampton enjoying a brief flurry of pressure, Liverpool broke and Salah drove forward at pace, making around 50 metres without a challenge before firing the ball past Angus Gunn.

Southampton, who remain five points above the drop zone, were flattened and Liverpool were spared any late frights when Roberto Firmino found Henderson who stroked home.

An ecstatic Klopp joined in the celebrations on the pitch with his players who face Chelsea at home next week.

"We have 82 points now, that is massive in this crazy league and everyone is waiting for us. I am really proud. It is incredible," the German said.

Mohamed Salah scores as Liverpool reclaim top spot

Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp said Premier League title rivals Manchester City are currently the best team in the world but there is no guarantee Pep Guardiola's side will finish the season with an unprecedented quadruple.&nbsp;

With the League Cup already in the bag, City are a point clear of Liverpool at the top of the league, and have reached the quarter-finals of the Champions League and semi-finals of the FA Cup.

"City look like the best team in the world, that's how it is," Klopp told reporters.

"Barcelona struggled a little bit (against Villarreal on Tuesday) but still did the job. Juve look pretty impressive in Italy but you don't exactly know how it will be in the Champions League if Cristiano Ronaldo cannot do it.

"And you think, OK, City look a bit more stable than all of them. But that doesn't mean they will win all their games."

While focus has been on City seeking a clean sweep of silverware, the prospect of Liverpool's themselves completing a Premier League and Champions League double seems to have slipped under the radar.

Klopp, however, does not expect his players to take their foot off the gas until the end of the campaign.

"I'm just interested in our games and we cannot do more than win our games," the German manager added.

"We knew pretty quick Southampton was the next challenge, then Porto, then Chelsea, then Porto again. There is a lot to come and the only thing I can say is that we try everything to be really ready for that fight."

Manchester City look like world's best but Liverpool will fight: Jurgen Klopp

Manchester City took command in the Premier League title race with a 2-0 win over Cardiff City that moved Pep Guardiola's side a point clear of Liverpool with six games of the campaign remaining.

After a game which City could have won by a much bigger margin, the destiny of the title is in their hands with both teams having now played 32 games and City on 80 points while Juergen Klopp's team are on 79.

If City win all their six games they will retain the title and after winning their last eight league games in a row and 21 of their last 22 in all competitions, they certainly are capable of finishing the season in such style.

"We have the feeling if we drop points we will not be champions," said Guardiola.

"With the chances we created, we should have scored more, that’s the regret but the other side it was really good," added the Spaniard.

City dominated from the outset, taking the lead in the sixth minute when Kevin De Bruyne ran on to a clever pass from Aymeric Laporte and blasted past Cardiff keeper Neil Etheridge from a tight angle.

The Belgian midfielder conceded after the game that he had intended to cross the ball but Etheridge will be disappointed that he had left his near post open.

City strutted and moved the ball with their customary ease but it was not until a minute before the break that Leroy Sane made it 2-0 with a sweet left-foot drive after a clever chest pass from Gabriel Jesus.

Somehow though City were unable to add to their tally after the break with Etheridge making a series of fine saves as City peppered the Cardiff goal.

He saved a Laporte header from a Phil Foden cross in the 66th minute, the City teenager having started his first Premier League game.

In the following five minutes the Philippine international keeper then parried and pushed over the bar a fierce Riyad Mahrez drive; was at full stretch to keep out a Sane shot and then dealt expertly with a Foden effort -- the 18-year-old having also hit the post.

Cardiff had barely troubled the City defence but they came close to pulling a goal back on the break, in the 74th minute when Kyle Walker slipped but Oumar Niasse was unable to finish off the counter, Ederson racing out to deny him.

The result leaves 18th placed Cardiff five points away from the safety zone on 28 points. Burnley, Southampton and Brighton are all on 33 points, Huddersfield Town and Fulham have already been relegated.

"We are trying to keep it interesting and we are far outweighing our expectations, we are still in with a shout," said Cardiff manager Neil Warnock.

"You can afford the odd draw but I think we have to win three at least, add a draw and who knows?"

Manchester City in command at the top after win over Cardiff

UEFA president Aleksander Ceferin admitted on Tuesday that he is ashamed of the recent outbreaks of racism that have blighted football this season.

England stars Raheem Sterling, Danny Rose and Callum Hudson-Odoi endured racist abuse from Montenegro fans during last month's Euro 2020 qualifier, while in the club game Inter Milan, Dinamo Zagreb and Dynamo Kiev have all been punished with full or partial venue closures due to racist behaviour by supporters.

"I am ashamed, ashamed that in 2019 we have to hold a conference to promote diversity," said Ceferin, at Wembley on Tuesday for the first Equal Game conference held to help tackle discrimination.

"It is worrying to see world leaders and politicians playing down racist and discriminatory incidents."

Ceferin will ask referees to "not be afraid" to stop matches when there is racial abuse.

"The moment a match is stopped, or it's not played, I think that 90 percent of normal people in the stadium would kick the asses of those idiots," Ceferin said.

"It's 2019, it's not 100 years ago. We will speak to the referees again, and tell them to be confident, not to be afraid to act.

"This is a huge problem. Not just the Balkans, all eastern Europe ... But of course you see Italy, one of the biggest problems with racism, sexism and homophobia. You have England, where you have problems."

'More needs to be done'

English football bosses are also ready to strengthen punishments against racism.

Football Association chairman Greg Clarke revealed the English game's governing body is reviewing disciplinary processes, to ensure claims of abuse are investigated more meticulously.

Clarke also revealed a review of training for match stewards on how to handle discrimination issues, with the FA keen to act after the abuse England players suffered in Podgorica.

"When Raheem Sterling, Danny Rose and Callum Hudson-Odoi speak with such maturity and eloquence, we must listen, we must respond -- and we must not let them down," Clarke said.

"Let me be clear, I'm using this match (Montenegro-England) as an example of something that's happening across all our societies, and across all of Europe.

"None of us can be naive enough to think racism doesn't happen at all of our countries and matches. Clearly more needs to be done.

"We must do more in England, and more across Europe, and we must do this together ... we must put some concrete actions in place."

Clarke believes it is time to re-examine UEFA's three-step process for halting matches as a result of racist abuse.

Current guidelines allow referees to stop, suspend or abandon matches due to racist abuse, but Clarke believes it is time to lower the threshold that allows referees to take that action.

"The protocol asks the referee to stop the match if 'racist behaviour is of a strong magnitude and intensity'," Clarke said.&nbsp;

"I don't now think that is good enough and we should take this opportunity to revisit these thresholds.

"The young men and women who take to the field representing our clubs and countries not only deserve, but should be entitled, to play their football in a safe environment entirely free from racial abuse."

UEFA chief Ceferin slams outbreaks of racist abuse

Goals from Aaron Ramsey and Alexandre Lacazette gave Arsenal a 2-0 win over Newcastle United on Monday and lifted them to third place in the Premier League above rivals Tottenham Hotspur and Manchester United.

Ramsey found his way through a packed defence on the half hour to score with a low shot before Frenchman Lacazette put the game to bed in the 83rd minute with a chip over the keeper.

The result put Arsenal on 63 points with seven games left, two above Spurs and Manchester United, with Chelsea a further point behind, as Unai Emery's side boosted their hopes of a top-four finish and Champions League football next season.

Five of Arsenal's remaining seven fixtures are away, where they have picked up fewer than half of their points this season, a fact Emery was quick to pick up on after the match.

"Our challenge is away - to be as consistent as we are at home," the Spaniard told reporters. His players, nevertheless, seem confident that they can return to Europe's elite club competition for the first time in three seasons.

"I can feel the difference in the atmosphere from last season. Now we can maybe go to the Champions League," Lacazette told Sky Sports after a convincing win over the Magpies.

Sweeping Move

Newcastle had not beaten Arsenal since November 2010 and not won away since December and they appeared to set themselves up for a draw at best in North London, with five men in the back line and another four in front of them for most of the game.

The tactics worked until a sweeping Arsenal move in which Welsh midfielder Ramsey found Lacazette and then raced forward into the area to meet the return pass with a sweetly timed left-foot shot that went into the net off the far post.

Arsenal pushed forward repeatedly as the opening period came to a close but failed to finish off any of their moves, with Sead Kolasinac particularly guilty of some wayward passing.

Their best chance came just before halftime when Lacazette latched onto a pass from Mesut Ozil, spun round and lashed the ball goalwards only for Matt Richie to head it off the line.

Lacazette wrapped up the points, however, when Newcastle captain Jamaal Lascelles failed to clear a header into the area from Arsenal substitute Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang.

The Frenchman nipped in behind Lascelles and chipped an inch-perfect ball over Martin Dubravka to seal the win.

Newcastle remain in 14th place on 35 points, seven points above the relegation places, and have six games left.

"For us every game is a final. We should focus, concentrate, not be overconfident," manager Rafael Benitez told reporters ahead of their next match at home to Crystal Palace on Saturday.

Sweeping Move Newcastle had not beaten Arsenal since November 2010 and not won away since December and they appeared to set themselves up for a draw at best in North London, with five men in the back line and another four in front of them for most of the game.

He added, "One day it might not happen and then accept the reality, so that is what it is. Mentally the people (players) are ready."&nbsp;

After the previous 2-0 win over Fulham at Craven Cottage on Saturday, City are back to the top of the Premier League table.&nbsp;

"So mentally we are there. I think we are there, the players are not stupid. The fact we are living something so difficult to achieve - arriving the beginning of April to fight," said Guardiola.&nbsp;

Be like a 'machine': Pep Guardiola to Manchester City on quadruple bid

Top-class goals from Bernardo Silva and Sergio Aguero took Manchester City back to the top of the Premier League in a 2-0 win over Fulham at Craven Cottage on Saturday.

City's seventh successive league victory keeps alive their hopes an unprecedented quadruple of League Cup, Premier League, FA Cup and Champions League trophies this season.

A wayward ball from Fulham's Timothy Fosu-Mensah gifted the visitors the lead in the fifth minute.

Sergio Aguero intercepted the Dutchman's pass just outside the area and passed to Silva, who cut across past two defenders and drove his left-footed shot into the corner past the diving Sergio Rico in goal.

City manager Pep Guardiola told reporters that Silva was playing so well he had made himself a fixture in the lineup.

"The way he is playing, I cannot do anything else but put him on the pitch," he said.

Fulham, who were missing top scorer Aleksandar Mitrovic after the international break, kept five men in the back line in a bid to keep City's attack at bay, leading to one-way traffic. In the end, the Cottagers were unable to register a single shot on target all game.

The home side's captain Tom Cairney won a freekick on the corner of the box in a rare break forward in the first half that had the home fans clapping and stamping their feet to rattle the century-old Johnny Haynes Stand.

However, Joe Bryan's cross was a whisker too high for Ryan Babel to head cleanly, and the ball went wide.

City's Silva turned provider in the 27th minute, pouncing onto a loose ball and passing to Aguero, who sprang forward past three defenders and shot from a tight angle up into the opposite corner for his league-leading 19th goal of the season.

Caretaker manager Scott Parker's Fulham have now failed to record a win in 14 games against City in all competitions and have lost the last eight in a row.

The result takes City back to the top of the Premier League on 77 points, one ahead of Liverpool who host Tottenham Hotspur on Sunday.

"Now it's the last part of the season, seven games left. It's easy: Every game we play we have to win if we want to be champions," Guardiola said.

For Fulham, the outlook is bleak. They remain in 19th place on 17 points, and will now most likely need to win every one of their remaining six matches to have a chance of avoiding relegation.

"We understand the predicament. The main focus now is we push and we end the season on a positive after a difficult campaign," Fulham boss Parker told reporters.

"We have another game on Tuesday and we have to do better. We have six games left and mathematically we're still in it," defender Cyrus Christie said.

Klopp called Tottenham a ''world-class team'' the Reds prepare to face Spurs at the Anfield.&nbsp;

Liverpool are currently top of the league, two points ahead of second-placed Manchester City who have a game in hand and Tottenham sit in third, a huge 15 points behind the leaders.

Klopp also commented on the racist abuse suffered by some England players during England's 5-1 win over Montenegro in Podgorica on Monday.

Former Manchester United manager Jose Mourinho is targeting a return to club management during the close season in June and has an idea about the type of club he wants to take charge of, the Portuguese has said.

Mourinho has been out of a job since he was sacked by United in December following a dismal run of results that left the club sixth in the Premier League standings, 19 points behind league leaders Liverpool.

"What I have in mind is that I would like to be back in the summer, in June, for a new club, for a new pre-season," Mourinho told BeIN Sports.

"I know exactly what I don't want. That's the reason why I had to say (no) already to three or four different offers. And I know what I want, in terms of not a specific club but the nature of the job, the dimension of the job."

Mourinho had said in January that he was not sure if he would manage another club in England after stints with Chelsea and United.

The 56-year-old, however, ruled out taking the reins of a national team as he prefers the day-to-day work that comes with being a club manager.

Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola hopes his players return injury-free from the international break this month for a hectic run of fixtures that could define the Premier League champions' season.&nbsp;

City play eight fixtures in 29 days after the international break with the club fighting on three fronts -- the league, FA Cup and Champions League -- as they seek a quadruple having already won the League Cup last month.&nbsp;

They are currently second in the league with a game in hand, two points behind leaders Liverpool, while Guardiola's side also advanced to the FA Cup semi-finals and the Champions League quarter-finals.&nbsp;

"I pray that they come back fit," Guardiola told City's website. "They have to go to their national teams... enjoy and play for their country, but I hope they can come back fit like they are now.&nbsp;

"I just want them fit and here... With the fixtures we have in April we need everybody, it's crazy."

Guardiola confirmed those not involved with their national teams would have a week's rest before returning to training but counted on his injured players to make a comeback and contribute in any way possible.

"Everybody is going to play and Kevin (De Bruyne), Fernandinho, John (Stones), Benjamin (Mendy) -- they are all going to be back soon and we need them. Even if some play 10 or 15 minutes here and there," Guardiola added.

"We need everybody because we have got to this stage where we are still in with a chance of winning three more trophies because of everybody. Not just 11 players, but everyone."

City's next game is a league trip to relegation strugglers Fulham on March 30.

Pep Guardiola praying his players return injury-free for quadruple bid

Liverpool&nbsp;usurped Manchester City to take top spot in the Premier League but needed a James Milner penalty nine minutes from time to see off lowly Fulham 2-1 at Craven Cottage on Sunday.

The on-form Sadio Mane put the visitors in front midway through the first half, but a rare defensive mix-up between Virgil van Dijk and Alisson Becker allowed Ryan Babel to give his former club a huge scare 16 minutes from time.

Fulham's awful defending all season is the reason they are heading back to the Championship after just one season back in the top flight, and the hosts gave Jurgen Klopp's men a much-needed gift when goalkeeper Sergio Rico bundled over Mane and Milner secured all three points from the spot.

Liverpool&nbsp;now hold a two-point lead over City, but the champions have a game in hand.

"Average game, sensational result," said Klopp of his side's performance.

"City don't look like they will drop a lot of points, so we have to win and win and win. That's our job to do."

Liverpool&nbsp;completed a clean sweep of four English sides into the quarter-finals of the Champions League with a highly impressive 3-1 win at Bayern Munich on Wednesday.

But they nearly suffered a very costly European hangover against a Fulham side still 13 points adrift of safety.

"We had to run a lot in a week where we ran a lot," added Klopp to justify an at times lacklustre display at such a pivotal stage of the season.

Most of the visitors' attacking threat came down their left side through Mane and the Senegalese proved the source of the breakthrough on 26 minutes.

Mane scored twice in Munich in midweek and took his hot streak to 11 goals in 11 games with a simple finish after exchanging passes with Roberto Firmino.

No excuses

Liverpool&nbsp;started the second half with greater intent to try and put the game to bed.

Andy Robertson was the provider as Georginio Wijnaldum headed a good opportunity over at the far post before Rico was called into action to deny Van Dijk.

However, as a torrential rain shower swept over the banks of the Thames to make playing conditions hazardous,&nbsp;Liverpool's slender lead proved a dangerous one.

Floyd Ayite was rightly flagged offside as he headed a deflected shot past Alisson before the Brazilian number one got down well to save from Andre Zambo Anguissa.

Mane was inches away from securing the points and doubling his tally for the day with a deft header from a corner that clipped the top of the crossbar.

Disaster seemed to have struck for&nbsp;Liverpool&nbsp;when Van Dijk's header back towards Alisson didn't have enough purchase and Babel stepped in with the break of the ball to tap into an empty net.

"I am not giving excuses. I should have handled it better," admitted Van Dijk.&nbsp;

However, the league leaders showed why they are in the running to end a 29-year title drought to get a vital three points with the help of some erratic goalkeeping from Rico.

"I saw the reaction of my players and I'm really pleased with that," added Klopp. "After the equaliser we were much clearer than before the equaliser."

Mohamed Salah's goal drought continued as the Egyptian has scored just once now in his last 10 games, but it was his shot that Rico spilled before the Spaniard unnecessarily pulled down Mane.

Milner took responsibility instead of Salah from the penalty spot and calmly sent Rico the wrong way to restore&nbsp;Liverpool's lead, which this time they never looked like letting go.

Fulham's awful defending all season is the reason they are heading back to the Championship after just one season back in the top flight, and the hosts gave Jurgen Klopp's men a much-needed gift when goalkeeper Sergio Rico bundled over Mane and Milner secured all three points from the spot. Liverpool now hold a two-point lead over City, but the champions have a game in hand. "Average game, sensational result," said Klopp of his side's performance. "City don't look like they will drop a lot of points, so we have to win and win and win. That's our job to do." Liverpool completed a clean sweep of four English sides into the quarter-finals of the Champions League with a highly impressive 3-1 win at Bayern Munich on Wednesday. No excuses Liverpool started the second half with greater intent to try and put the game to bed. Andy Robertson was the provider as Georginio Wijnaldum headed a good opportunity over at the far post before Rico was called into action to deny Van Dijk. However, as a torrential rain shower swept over the banks of the Thames to make playing conditions hazardous, Liverpool's slender lead proved a dangerous one. Disaster seemed to have struck for Liverpool when Van Dijk's header back towards Alisson didn't have enough purchase and Babel stepped in with the break of the ball to tap into an empty net. "I am not giving excuses. I should have handled it better," admitted Van Dijk. However, the league leaders showed why they are in the running to end a 29-year title drought to get a vital three points with the help of some erratic goalkeeping from Rico. "I saw the reaction of my players and I'm really pleased with that," added Klopp. "After the equaliser we were much clearer than before the equaliser." Mohamed Salah's goal drought continued as the Egyptian has scored just once now in his last 10 games, but it was his shot that Rico spilled before the Spaniard unnecessarily pulled down Mane. Milner took responsibility instead of Salah from the penalty spot and calmly sent Rico the wrong way to restore Liverpool's lead, which this time they never looked like letting go.

Liverpool survive Fulham scare to go top of Premier League

Manchester City manager <a href="https://www.wionews.com/search?q=Pep+Guardiola">Pep Guardiola</a> believes that the club's achievements in the Champions League will ultimately determine if his stint in England has been a success.

The Spaniard guided former club Barcelona to two titles in Europe's elite club competition but could not repeat that feat at Bayern Munich despite delivering three Bundesliga titles and two German Cups.

"I was judged in Munich in that way so I will be judged here as well," Guardiola told a news conference ahead of Saturday's FA Cup quarter-final at Swansea City.

"My period in Munich wasn't good for most people because we didn't get one final. We got semi-finals but we didn't get a final and we were judged. I'm a lucky guy. My standards are high. I have to reach it."

City are looking to reach the last four of the Champions League for the first time under Guardiola and face a potentially difficult test having been drawn to face Premier League rivals Tottenham Hotspur in next month's quarter-finals.

Guardiola said he had no complaints with a Champions League trophy being the yardstick to measure his success in Manchester despite winning a league title and two League Cups.

"When I spoke with my chairman, CEO, sporting director, the people here know and they give credit for what we have done in the last two seasons. That's the most important thing," he said.

"After that, everyone can judge if it's a disaster. If we do not win the Champions League, our work for three seasons, every three days, is a failure or a disaster. I completely do not agree but what can I say? Accept it and move on.

"What's important is that the players, the club, the fans give credit if we are consistent and humble and, in every single game, do what we have to do. We won a lot in the past and that's why people believe that is normal -- but that's not normal."

<a href="https://www.wionews.com/search?q=Manchester+City">Manchester City</a> will be banned by FIFA from making signings in the next two transfer windows after they broke rules related to the protection of youth players and third-party ownership, according to a report in the Sun newspaper.

The club are already being investigated by the Football Association and Premier League over allegations related to youth transfers and financial fair play rules.

European football's governing body UEFA is also looking into potential breaches of financial fair play, an investigation that could result in City being banned from the Champions League.

A transfer ban for the Premier League champions would come less than a month after Chelsea were hit with the same sanction for 29 breaches of article 19 of FIFA's regulations on the transfer and status of players.

The west London club have already lodged an appeal against that punishment but were told by world governing body FIFA last week that the sanction would not be frozen while the case is being reviewed, as Chelsea had hoped.

FIFA has been investigating City's international transfers for several years, although the club were cleared of breaking the rules when they signed Benjamin Garre from Velez Sarsfield in 2016 just after the Argentine midfielder's 16th birthday.

According to the Sun report, FIFA believes City have crossed the line, though, in regards to their relationship with FC Nordsjaelland and the Right To Dream football academy in Ghana that is also owned by the Danish side's president, Tom Vernon.

Last year, two players from the academy, Sierra Leone's George Davies and Ghanaian Dominic Oduro, told Danish newspaper Jyllands-Posten that they signed for City and played in youth matches before they turned 18.

Both have since left City -- Davies now plays in Latvia and Oduro in the United States -- but FIFA has been investigating their time with the English club.

And that investigation was broadened later in 2018 when a second Danish newspaper, Politiken, published a story that said City had a secret deal with Vernon to have first refusal on the best prospects from Right to Dream.

If true, that would be a breach of the rules preventing the third-party ownership of players, as City could be argued to have undue influence over another club's players.

Neither FIFA nor City were available for comment on Thursday.&nbsp;

City have welcomed the UEFA investigation into allegations that the club tried to circumvent financial fair play regulations, and Blues boss Pep Guardiola said on the issue last week: "I said last season I trust a lot what the club has done because I know them. Hopefully they can solve it as soon as possible."

As well as Chelsea, Spanish trio Atletico Madrid, Barcelona and Real Madrid have all been punished for signing under-age players from abroad in the past.

Real were able to get their ban reduced on appeal to the Court of Arbitration for Sport,&nbsp;an avenue Chelsea will also explore.

Manchester City face FIFA transfer ban: Report

<a href="http://www.wionews.com/search?q=Manchester+City">Manchester City</a> have launched a compensation scheme for victims of historical child sexual abuse, the English Premier League champions said on Tuesday.

The scheme applies to victims of City's former youth coach, Barry Bennell, who was jailed in 2018 for 30 years on multiple counts of child sexual abuse.

The club added an independent investigation had also revealed "serious allegations of child sex abuse" against another former junior coach, John Broome, whose alleged victims will also be eligible for compensation under the scheme.

Broome, who worked with City from 1964-71, died in 2010.

City did not reveal financial details of the scheme but media reported on Monday that the club were set to offer millions of pounds in compensation.

Victims of the most serious crimes will receive six-figure sums in damages while those abused will also receive a personal apology from a senior club official, the BBC reported.&nbsp;

"The club reiterates ... its heartfelt sympathy to all victims for the unimaginably traumatic experiences that they endured," City said in a statement on its official website.

"All victims were entitled to expect full protection from the kind of harm they suffered as a result of their sexual abuse as children."

Solskjaer 'can't be disappointed with Manchester United performance' in Arsenal defeat

From Raheem Sterling's sparkle to Harry Kane conundrum: Major takeaways from this week's Premier League

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer blamed Manchester United's lack of ruthlessness as the Norwegian suffered his first domestic defeat as caretaker manager in a 2-0 loss at Arsenal on Sunday.

"The first goal always dictates how the game goes. We created chances, big chances, hit the woodwork twice, (Bernd) Leno played well.

European trips to France for both sides in midweek produced vastly contrasting results as United shocked free-spending Paris Saint-Germain 3-1 to progress to the quarter-finals of the Champions League.

The Gunners, on the other hand, went down 3-1 to Rennes to give themselves a mountain to climb in Thursday's second leg to reach the last eight of the Europa League.

Emery made five changes from that side and was rewarded with a vital victory.

"We are going to play difficult matches and being consistent is very important," said Emery. "At the moment I think we are playing consistently, but we need to be calm and patient."

De Gea not distracted

After a bright start, Arsenal were nearly hit with a sucker punch when with United's first attack, Romelu Lukaku turned Luke Shaw's cross onto the crossbar for the first of a series of wasted chances for the Belgian striker.

However, at the other end it was the normally flawless David de Gea who was at fault for the opener as the Spaniard failed to read the swerve on Xhaka's long-range strike 12 minutes in.

Solskjaer, though, rejected suggestions ongoing contract talks over a new deal for the United goalkeeper has effected his concentration.

"David's really focused and concentrated, he's too professional to let his mind wander," insisted Solskjaer.

United seemed to feel the after-effects of their heroics in Paris early on, but soon clicked into gear to look more like the side that had suffered just one defeat in Solskjaer's first 17 games in charge.

Fred's curling effort from outside the box clipped the post before Lukaku tried to round Bernd Leno, but the Arsenal goalkeeper stood up well to block.

The German stopper had an unconvincing start to life as Arsenal number one, but has looked ever more assured in recent weeks and made another huge save to deny Lukaku once more from close range six minutes into the second-half.

United were utterly dominant for the first 20 minutes of the second period, but to Solskjaer's frustration conceded a penalty when Alexandre Lacazette charged into the area and hit the floor under minimal contact from Fred.

"I don't think there is enough contact to warrant the penalty," said Solskjaer, while even Emery categorised the award as "soft."

Aubameyang missed a last-minute penalty to win the north London derby against Tottenham last weekend, but made no mistake to leave the visitors a mountain to climb.

"I knew it would be tough, but I was really confident," said the Gabon international.

Solskjaer's time at United as a player and over the past three months as boss has been littered with late drama, none more so than at PSG on Wednesday.

That was a Champions League night that will live long in the memory, but there was no turnaround this time to leave the Red Devils with plenty of work to do just to qualify for the competition next season.
