<p>In a recent interview, on Twitter Spaces, Tesla CEO Elon Musk’s biographer, Walter Isaacson spoke about how the billionaire sometimes goes into “demon mode” which makes him highly productive and a tough leader but also “dark”. This comes as the biographer spoke about Musk’s complex life and the upcoming biography about the billionaire on Thursday.</p>

<h2><strong>Musk’s ‘demon mode’</strong></h2>

<p>During the interview, Isaacson said that one of the difficulties while dealing with smart and innovative people is that they have quite a “dark streak”. Notably, he has previously written biographies on several innovators, like Steve Jobs, Albert Einstein and Leonardo da Vinci.</p>

<p>Similarly, in Musk’s case, the biographer said that his so-called dark streak comes from a very brutal, violent childhood. “A childhood in which he had very strong psychological difficulties with his father,” said Isaacson.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Notably, the term “demon mode” is said to have been coined by Grimes, Musk’s former girlfriend, who told the biographer how it could be “unpleasant” being around the Twitter CEO when he is in that mode but “gets shit done.”&nbsp;</p>

<p>Speaking broadly about the dark streak, the biographer said that many brilliant and successful people, including Musk and Jobs, are not burdened by empathy which allows them to accomplish a larger mission and can make them much tougher leaders.&nbsp;</p>

<p>In the Tesla CEO&nbsp;case, Isaacson said that he has a “maniacal sense of urgency” which would often scare some of his workers. “He’d go dark and I’d know that he was just going to rip that person apart,” said Isaacson about Musk, when someone would not match his sense of urgency. This became common when Musk had just taken over Twitter, said the biographer.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Isaacson, who followed Musk’s day-to-day life for nearly two years, said that these moments of rage would make him “uncomfortable” and it was hard to watch. “He is just brutal,” said the biographer, as per Insider.&nbsp;</p>

<p>He added, “The thing that I noticed is that once he finishes doing it – and it was never physical and it was almost done in a flat monotone – but he would just really attack people and then a few days later if they absorbed the lesson, he’d forget about it.”&nbsp;</p>

<h2><strong>Tesla CEO’s addiction to risk</strong></h2>

<p>One of the things that surprised Isaacson, he said, was Musk’s childhood and his relationship with his father Errol Musk. According to the biographer, the Tesla CEO’s father shaped his personality and affected his understanding of risk.</p>

<p>Additionally, the biographer has also attributed Musk’s risk-taking behaviour and “dark streak” to his relationship with his father as well as the bullying he endured in his youth.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Musk is almost addicted to risk, said Isaacson. He added, “It’s an important thing because America has lost the ability to take risks and do great manufacturing, and there’s a dark quality to his desire to take risks”.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Isaacson said that his book, which is due to release in September, is aimed to show the complexity of Musk and the balance between his “dark streak” and his groundbreaking work with Tesla and SpaceX.&nbsp;</p>

Musk’s ‘demon mode’ During the interview, Isaacson said that one of the difficulties while dealing with smart and innovative people is that they have quite a “dark streak”. Notably, he has previously written biographies on several innovators, like Steve Jobs, Albert Einstein and Leonardo da Vinci. Similarly, in Musk’s case, the biographer said that his so-called dark streak comes from a very brutal, violent childhood. “A childhood in which he had very strong psychological difficulties with his father,” said Isaacson. Notably, the term “demon mode” is said to have been coined by Grimes, Musk’s former girlfriend, who told the biographer how it could be “unpleasant” being around the Twitter CEO when he is in that mode but “gets shit done.” Speaking broadly about the dark streak, the biographer said that many brilliant and successful people, including Musk and Jobs, are not burdened by empathy which allows them to accomplish a larger mission and can make them much tougher leaders. In the Tesla CEO case, Isaacson said that he has a “maniacal sense of urgency” which would often scare some of his workers. “He’d go dark and I’d know that he was just going to rip that person apart,” said Isaacson about Musk, when someone would not match his sense of urgency. This became common when Musk had just taken over Twitter, said the biographer. Isaacson, who followed Musk’s day-to-day life for nearly two years, said that these moments of rage would make him “uncomfortable” and it was hard to watch. “He is just brutal,” said the biographer, as per Insider. He added, “The thing that I noticed is that once he finishes doing it – and it was never physical and it was almost done in a flat monotone – but he would just really attack people and then a few days later if they absorbed the lesson, he’d forget about it.” Tesla CEO’s addiction to risk One of the things that surprised Isaacson, he said, was Musk’s childhood and his relationship with his father Errol Musk. According to the biographer, the Tesla CEO’s father shaped his personality and affected his understanding of risk. Additionally, the biographer has also attributed Musk’s risk-taking behaviour and “dark streak” to his relationship with his father as well as the bullying he endured in his youth. Musk is almost addicted to risk, said Isaacson. He added, “It’s an important thing because America has lost the ability to take risks and do great manufacturing, and there’s a dark quality to his desire to take risks”. The upcoming book Isaacson said that his book, which is due to release in September, is aimed to show the complexity of Musk and the balance between his “dark streak” and his groundbreaking work with Tesla and SpaceX. <p>What he didn't talk about is how Starlink is at odds with Ambani's Reliance over the government's distribution of satellite broadband spectrum, setting the stage for a battle between two of the world's richest men for satellite services in the world's most populous nation.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Starlink is lobbying India to not auction the spectrum but just assign licences in line with a global trend, saying it is a natural resource that should be shared by companies. An auction may impose geographical restrictions that will raise costs, it said in company letters made public by the Indian government this month.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Reliance disagrees and has called for an auction in a public submission to the government, saying foreign satellite service providers could offer voice and data services and compete with traditional telecom players, and so there must be an auction to achieve a level playing field.&nbsp;</p>

<p>In signs of deepening rivalry, an industry source with direct knowledge said Reliance will continue nudging the Indian government to auction satellite spectrum, and not agree to the demands of foreign companies.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The stakes are high for Musk. His push comes after a 2021 attempt to launch Starlink in India ran afoul of local regulators for taking bookings without a license, and just as he is in talks with India to set up a Tesla factory.&nbsp;</p>

<p>For Ambani, keeping foreign competition at bay in satellite broadband will be another shot in the arm - his Reliance Jio already has 439 million telecom users, making it the market leader, and 8 million wired broadband connections, a 25% market share.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Starlink's view on auctions is shared by Amazon's satellite internet initiative, Project Kuiper, and the British government-backed OneWeb.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Amazon declined comment. The Telecom Regulatory Authority of India, OneWeb and Starlink parent SpaceX, did not respond. Asked for comment, Reliance referred Reuters to its own and Starlink's government submissions.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Of the 64 responses from companies, industry groups and others to India's public consultation on satellite spectrum, 48 favoured licensing, 12 voted for an auction, with the rest neutral, according to India's Koan Advisory.&nbsp;</p>

<p>A second industry source said Reliance believes opening the floodgates to established foreign players like Starlink without an auction will allow them "runaway success" just like Amazon, which will hurt Indian firms and create an uneven playing field.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Ambani's Reliance Retail has locked horns with Amazon, but lags the U.S. rival in market share in the e-commerce space.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Deloitte says India's satellite broadband service market will grow 36% a year to reach $1.9 billion by 2030.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Starlink says it is already authorised in 84 administrations around the world and has 1.5 million active users of its low-latency broadband services. Amazon plans to launch its first set of satellites in 2024.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Foreign satellite internet firms are concerned an auction by India will raise the likelihood of other nations following suit, increasing costs and investments, said one of the sources, an Indian adviser to a foreign company.&nbsp;</p>

<p>If India decides on holding an auction, OneWeb will find it difficult to do business in the country, said an industry source. Starlink is waiting for clarity on India's spectrum allocation before firming up its commercial strategy, another source said.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Tim Farrar, an analyst at US-based consultancy TMF Associates, said it would set a "bad precedent" for Starlink to pay a substantial auction amount in India when it is obtaining low-cost licenses in many other countries.&nbsp;</p>

<p>"I'd expect Starlink to make high-profile free offers elsewhere in order to try and demonstrate what India could be missing out on," he said.</p>

<p>The chain of events started on Tuesday when Musk commented on a tweet about Facebook potentially developing a Twitter competitor.&nbsp;</p>

<p>“I’m sure Earth can’t wait to be exclusively under Zuck’s thumb with no other options. At least it will be ‘sane’. Was worried there for a moment,” Musk tweeted with a crying-laughing emoji.</p>

<p>Musk also seemingly confirmed the fight by sharing the location of the fight as "Vegas Octagon".&nbsp;</p>

The London Stock Exchange gave British American Tobacco an ESG rating of 94, and Tesla a more middling 65.&nbsp;</p>

<p>MSCI (Morgan Stanley Capital International) that provides stock indexes, portfolio risk and performance analytics, and governance tools to institutional investors and hedge funds has been downgrading Tesla's ESG rating over time. In 2017, MSCI gave Tesla an ESG rating of "AAA," but it reduced the rating to "AA" in 2018 and "A" in 2022.<br />

<p>The agency, which&nbsp;describes itself as the world’s first government agency dedicated to keeping people safer online, said Thursday that it received more complaints about Twitter in the past 12 months than any other platform and received an increasing number of reports of serious online abuse since Musk took over the company in October last year.&nbsp;</p>

<h2><strong>Twitter has 28 days to respond</strong>&nbsp;</h2>

<p>The eSafety Commission’s boss, Julie Inman Grant, said she sent a notice to Twitter&nbsp; on Wednesday with 36 detailed questions on how the platform’s policies about hateful conduct are enforced.&nbsp;</p>

<p>If Twitter does not respond with factual and truthful responses to all questions within 28 days, an Australian judge could fine the company up to 700,000 Australian dollars ($476,000) for every day of delay, said Inman Grant.&nbsp;</p>

<p>“The whole idea of the basic online safety expectations is that global companies like Twitter are enforcing their own policies … and that they’ve got people and technology to keep their platforms safe,” Inman Grant said.</p>

<p>Twitter under Musk has fired more than 80 per cent of the global workforce, including many of the content moderators who are responsible for stamping out abuse.&nbsp;</p>

<p>But the company’s new CEO Linda Yaccarino has a different take as she said last week that her vision for Twitter was making it “world’s most accurate real-time information source and global town square for communication.”</p>

<h2><strong>Hate against Indigenous Australians on Twitter</strong>&nbsp;</h2>

<p>The eSafety Commission’s demand as Australia prepares for a referendum this year on whether to recognise Indigenous people in the constitution, prompting an increasingly intense debate about race.&nbsp;</p>

Australian watchdog gives Twitter 28 days to tackle online hate

<p>The greatest Pay-Per-View (PPV) fight of the century might be in the works. If one is to go by the social media posts of Twitter boss Elon Musk and Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg, the duo might soon lock horns, that too in a cage match fight.</p>

<p>The chain of events started on Tuesday when Musk, akin to his routine social media behaviour, commented on a tweet about Facebook potentially developing a Twitter competitor.&nbsp;</p>

<p>“I’m sure Earth can’t wait to be exclusively under Zuck’s thumb with no other options. At least it will be ‘sane’. Was worried there for a moment,” Musk tweeted with a crying-laughing emoji.</p>

<p>A Twitter user replied to Musk saying he should be careful of Zuckerberg since the Facebook boss had been practising jiu-jitsu, a Brazilian martial art form.&nbsp;</p>

<p>“I’m up for a cage match if he is lol,” replied a cavalier Musk.</p>

<p>Though one would be forgiven to think it was all banter from Musk, Zuckerberg seemed game for the match. He posted a screenshot of Musk's tweet on his Instagram story, saying, "send me location".&nbsp;</p>

<p>Afterwards, another netizen posted Zuckerberg's Instagram story screenshot to which Musk replied,&nbsp;“If this is for real, I will do it.”&nbsp;</p>

<p>Tech outlet <em>The Verge</em> reached out to Meta for a response which said,&nbsp;“The story speaks for itself".&nbsp;Musk also seemingly&nbsp;confirmed the fight by sharing the location of the fight as "Vegas Octagon".&nbsp;</p>

<p>In a subsequent tweet, Musk joked saying, "I have this great move that I call “The Walrus”, where I just lie on top of my opponent &amp; do nothing."</p>

<p>“Twitter doesn't have a choice but to obey local governments. If we don't obey local government laws then we will get shut down," Musk told the reporters.&nbsp;</p>

<p>"The best we can do is to follow the laws in any given country," the billionaire said, adding that it is impossible for "us to do more than that".<br />

<p>“India for example, India is one of the countries which had many requests around farmers protests, around particular journalists which were critical of the government, and it manifested in ways such as ‘we will shut Twitter down in India’… ‘we would raid the homes of your employees', which they did; ‘we will shut down your offices if you don't follow suit’. And this is India, a democratic country," said Dorsey.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Dorsey, who left Twitter last year after&nbsp;Musk took over the company, added that Turkey under President Recep Tayyip Erdogan behaved in a similar way to India. Ankara reportedly threatened to shut down Twitter and later got embroiled in a legal battle with the microblogging platform.&nbsp;</p>

<p>“Turkey is very similar (to India), like we had so many requests from Turkey. We fought Turkey in their courts and often won, but they threatened to shut us down constantly,”&nbsp;said Dorsey.</p>

<p>He added that Twitter could not put its employees on the ground in Nigeria, out of fear what the government might do to them.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Union Minister of State for&nbsp;Electronics &amp; Technology Rajeev Chandrasekhar posted a rebuttal where he said Dorsey was attempting to "brush out a very dubious period of Twitter's history".&nbsp;</p>

<p>"Twitter under Dorsey and&nbsp;his team were in repeated and continuous violations of Indian laws. As a matter of fact, they were in non-compliance with law repeatedly from 2020 to 2022 and it was only June 2022 when they finally complied," said Chandrasekhar.&nbsp;</p>

<p>"During the protests in January 2021, there was a lot of misinformation and even reports of genocide which were definitely fake. GoI was obligated to remove misinformation from the platform because it had the potential to further inflame the situation based on fake news," the minister added.</p>

<p>The farmers' protests started after the Modi government brought three controversial farm laws. Thousands of farmers from across the country camped in and around the capital city of Delhi for nearly a year, forcing the government to repeal the laws in November 2021.</p>
