Heaton-Harris told reporters that he would have more to say next week after meeting with local election officials "to discuss operational considerations to inform my decision about the election date."&nbsp;

The UK minister maintained that he had no other choice despite the fact that political parties in Belfast opposed having a second election in less than a year.&nbsp;

Since the pro-UK Democratic Unionist Party (DUP) broke power-sharing in February over its vehement opposition to the so-called Northern Ireland Protocol dictating post-Brexit trade regulations, the province has been without a devolved administration for nine months.

"We don't know what the result will be," Kristersson told supporters. "But I am ready to do all I can to form a new, stable and vigorous government for the whole of Sweden and all its citizens."

With overseas and some postal votes yet to be counted and the margin between the two blocs wafer-thin, results could still change. Social Democrat Prime Minister Magdalena Andersson did not concede defeat on election night, saying results were too close to call.

The election authority said a preliminary result would be available at Wednesday at the earliest.

Kristersson has said he would seek to form a government with the small Christian Democrats and, possibly, the Liberals, and only rely on Sweden Democrat support in parliament. But it may be hard for him to keep at arms length a party that is set to be bigger than his own.

"Right now it looks like there will be a change of power. Our ambition is to sit in the government," Sweden Democrat leader Jimmie Akesson told jubilant supporters at a post-election party.

"Twelve years ago we got into parliament, I think we got 5.7% finally. Right now we have 20.7%."

TOUGH ON CRIME

Campaigning had seen parties battle to be the toughest on gang crime, after a steady rise in shootings that has unnerved voters, while surging inflation and the energy crisis following the invasion of Ukraine have increasingly taken centre-stage.

While law and order issues are home turf for the right, gathering economic clouds as households and companies face sky-high power prices had been seen boosting Prime Minister Andersson, viewed as a safe pair of hands and more popular than her party.&nbsp;

Andersson was finance minister for many years before becoming Sweden's first female <a href="https://www.wionews.com/south-asia/13-banks-accounts-of-pak-pms-younger-son-frozen-over-money-laundering-case-report-515150">prime minister</a> a year ago.

Kristersson had cast himself as the only candidate who could unite the right and unseat her.

INTO THE MAINSTREAM

When Kristersson took over as leader of the Moderates in 2017, the Sweden Democrats, an anti-immigration party with white supremacists among its founders, were shunned by the right and left. But Kristersson has gradually deepened cross-party ties since a 2018 election loss and the Sweden Democrats are increasingly seen as part of the mainstream right.

The prospect of the Sweden Democrats having a say in government policy or joining the cabinet has divided voters.

"I'm fearing very much a repressive, very right-wing government coming," Malin Ericsson, 53, a travel consultant, said earlier on Sunday at a voting station in central Stockholm.

The strong result for the Sweden Democrats fits a pattern of gains for the anti-immigration right wing across Europe where Italy looks poised to elect a conservative bloc including Giorgia Meloni's Brothers of Italy (FdI) and Matteo Salvini's League later this month.

"I have voted for a change in power," said Jorgen Hellstrom 47, a small business owner, as he voted near parliament. "Taxes need to come down by quite a bit and we need to sort out crime. The last eight years have gone in the wrong direction."

Whichever bloc wins, negotiations to form a government in a polarised and emotionally-charged political landscape are likely to be long and difficult.

Andersson will need to get support from the Centre Party and the Left, who are ideological opposites, and the Green Party as well, if she wants a second term as prime minister.

After the 1st heated round, British prime minister contenders set to clash in second TV debate

With the race for the UK’s prime ministership gaining heat, interim prime minister Boris Johnson has urged the defeated Tory member candidates to “back anyone but Rishi Sunak”, according to local media reports.

According to The Times newspaper, Johnson, who resigned as the leader of the ruling Conservative Party on July 7 after many of his cabinet ministers quit, has asked the failed candidates to make sure that Sunak does not become the prime minister.

Moreover, Johnson reportedly told the contenders that he would neither endorse anyone nor intervene in the contest.

According to the newspaper, this secret meeting is part of the “anyone but Rishi” hidden campaign that is being run by Johnson and his supporters.

The newspaper further reported that Johnson feels betrayed by Sunak, whose resignation triggered his exit even as he lost the support of his own party members.

However, Johnson felt that Liz Truss, the foreign secretary, who has been endorsed by his fiercest cabinet allies, Jacob Rees-Mogg and Nadine Dorries are able candidates to take the mantle of leadership of Conservative party, a source who had direct access to one of the conversations told the newspaper.

Johnson also reportedly indicated that he is open to Penny Mordaunt, the junior trade minister, succeeding him if it meant that Sunak is kept out of the race.

"The whole No.10 [Downing Street] team hates Rishi. It's personal. It's vitriolic. They don't blame Saj [Sajid Javid] for bringing him down. They blame Rishi. They think he was planning this for months," the newspaper quoted a source as saying.

But an ally of Johnson, who didn;t wish to be named,&nbsp;rubbished the claims that has been “anyone but Rishi” campaign, but acknowledged that the interim prime minister harboured resentment over Sunak’s “betrayal”.

Former chancellor Rishi Sunak, who is touted to be the next Conservative party leader, has won of the first two rounds of voting by Tory members of Parliament.

Under the latest votes tally, Sunak has 101, Mordaunt 83, Truss 64, Badenoch 49 and Tugendhat 32.

According to The Times newspaper, Johnson, who resigned as the leader of the ruling Conservative Party on July 7 after many of his cabinet ministers quit, has asked the failed candidates to make sure that Sunak does not become the prime minister. Moreover, Johnson reportedly told the contenders that he would neither endorse anyone nor intervene in the contest. According to the newspaper, this secret meeting is part of the “anyone but Rishi” hidden campaign that is being run by Johnson and his supporters. The newspaper further reported that Johnson feels betrayed by Sunak, whose resignation triggered his exit even as he lost the support of his own party members. However, Johnson felt that Liz Truss, the foreign secretary, who has been endorsed by his fiercest cabinet allies, Jacob Rees-Mogg and Nadine Dorries are able candidates to take the mantle of leadership of Conservative party, a source who had direct access to one of the conversations told the newspaper. Johnson also reportedly indicated that he is open to Penny Mordaunt, the junior trade minister, succeeding him if it meant that Sunak is kept out of the race. "The whole No.10 [Downing Street] team hates Rishi. It's personal. It's vitriolic. They don't blame Saj [Sajid Javid] for bringing him down. They blame Rishi. They think he was planning this for months," the newspaper quoted a source as saying. Former chancellor Rishi Sunak, who is touted to be the next Conservative party leader, has won of the first two rounds of voting by Tory members of Parliament. Ranil Wickremesinghe, his rival, was appointed but said he will also step down to create room for a unity administration.

Premadasa acknowledged the situation, saying there are no easy solutions to this. He added that his party has an economic strategy to get the nation out of this situation and that it would take four to five years to get the economy back on track like in 2019.

However, the protesters in Colombo’s Galle Face claim that all the 255 members of the parliament are equally responsible for the current state of the country and demand a new beginning with young and dynamic politicians taking over.
