Former Pakistan Prime Minister Imran Khan has issued a deadline for the current government to hold fresh elections. Imran said on Monday that if the Shehbaz Sharif-led government does not announce early elections, his party – Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf – will dissolve two regional legislative assemblies.&nbsp;

This is the latest move by Imran who had earlier urged the government to hold meetings with the opposition regarding a possible early election. If the PTI dissolves the local governments, it will force the Election Commission to hold local elections in those two regions – something that happens alongside the general elections. Officially, the tenure of Sharif’s government will end in August 2023.&nbsp;

“They’re delaying elections just because they are fearful of defeat. We’ll win whenever they’re held," Imran Khan had said earlier during a public address according to The Dawn.&nbsp;

PTI leader Fawad Chaudhry took to Twitter to share the deadline set by his party.&nbsp;

While the opposition parties have been calling for early elections, the Pakistan government has not paid any attention to their demands. Sharif has maintained that elections will not be held ahead of time.&nbsp;

Meanwhile, Sharif has issued a statement on Twitter regarding the rocket fire from Taliban forces on a border crossing with Pakistan that led to the death of six civilians. In the Twitter post, the Pakistan PM demanded that “the Afghan Interim government should ensure that such incidents are not repeated."&nbsp;

"Pakistan has also approached Afghan authorities at Kabul to highlight (the) severity of the situation and demanded strict action to obviate any such recurrence of the incident in future," the Pakistan military said.&nbsp;

The people of the western state of Gujarat-- the home state of Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi-- is all set to vote for the first phase of the assembly elections on Thursday after the intense campaigning by all the political parties.There has been a race among the political parties including Bharatiya Janata Party, Congress and Aam Aadmi Party for making poll promises as the fate of the political parties will be decided by over 2 crore voters today with 89 constituencies spread across 19 districts of Kutch, Saurashtra and South Gujarat going up for polling. According to the Election Commission of India, the voting will begin at 8 am and conclude at 5 pm.

A total of 39 political parties are contesting in the elections and have fielded 788 candidates including 718 male candidates and 70 women candidates.The ruling BJP is exuding confidence in retaining the 27-year-long rule in the state, while the Congress is desparate to save its second position in the state while Arvind Kejriwal`s AAP is making a gamble by trying to cash in on `anti-incumbency` and issues like inflation and unemployment to get to power.As the BJP looks to retain power and AAP aims to make inroads into yet another state, a fierce battle is expected on various seats that will go to poll on Thursday morning.

Jamnagar North (Jamnagar)The first on the list is Jamnagar North where the battle is between BJP`s Rivaba Jadeja, cricketer Ravindra Jadeja`s wife, Congress` Bipendrasinh Jadeja and AAP`s Karsan Karmur.The BJP dropped the sitting MLA Dharmendrasinh Merubha who won the seat by defeating Congress candidate Ahir Jivanbhai Karubhai Kumbharvadiya in the 2017 Assembly elections.The seat came to the limelight after a political tussle between two members of the same family came to the fore with Rivaba, who is making her electoral debut, contesting from the BJP and her sister-in-law and father-in-law campaigning for the Congress candidate.MorbiThe second on the list is Morbi, which became a talking point following the tragic incident recently in which a suspension bridge fell into the river claiming the lives of over 130 people.

The BJP has fielded Kantilal Amrutiya, who replaced sitting MLA and Cabinet Minister Brijesh Merja, and he is up against Congress` Jayantilal Jerajbhai Patel and AAP`s Pankaj Ransariya.The Opposition parties, during the campaign, raised the issue of "mismanagement" in the Morbi incident, trying to corner the government on the incident.However, historically, the BJP has won the Morbi Assembly seat in 1995, 1998, 2002, 2007 and 2012 before Amrutiya lost to Merja, who was in Congress in 2017. Merja had joined BJP later and won the by-polls from Morbi again. The BJP has Merja with Amrutiya in 2022.

Khambalia (Devbhoomi Dwarka)The seat becomes significant as the AAP`s chief ministerial candidate Isudan Gadhvi is contesting from this seat where he is confronted by BJP`s Mulu Ayar Bera and Congress` Vikram Madam.The battle is expected to be triangular with a close contest between the BJP and AAP. Congress is said to be strong as the party candidate Ahir Vikrambhai Arjanbhai Madam had won the seat in 2017. Congress has replaced its candidate in the 2022 elections.Rajkot West (Rajkot)Rajkot West is the seat where Prime Minister Narendra Modi previously contested a by-poll in 2002. Former chief minister Vijay Rupani had also contested from the seat in the 2017 Assembly elections.&nbsp;

The BJP has given a ticket to two-time Deputy Mayor Darshita Shah who is up against AAP`s Dinesh Joshi and Congress`s Mansukhbhai.The seat is considered a bastion of the BJP which the party has not lost since 1985.Rupani had won the seat by defeating Indranil Rajguru of INC with a margin of 53,755 votes in the 2017 Assembly elections.Devbhoomi DwarkaPabubha Manek, the BJP candidate who has not lost a single election in the last 32 years, is up against Congress` Malubhai Kandoria, and AAP candidate Nakum Lakhmanbhai Boghabhai.Manek had won the first three elections as an independent (1990, 95, 98), then joined the Congress and won the seat in 2002. Later, he won the Assembly elections of 2007, 2012 and 2017 on a BJP ticket.

In the 2017 Gujarat Assembly polls, Manek had won the seat by defeating Congress` Ahir Meraman Markhi with a margin of 5,739 votes.Talala (Gir Somnath)The BJP has fielded Bhagwan Barad from the seat who is contesting against AAP`s Devendra Solanki and Congress` Mansinh Dodiya.

Barad had won the seat in the 2017 Assembly polls. He had resigned as the Congress MLA from Talala Gir Somnath district and had joined the BJP following which he was given a ticket from the same seat. Barad is an influential leader of the Ahir community. He won from the Talala constituency in 2007 and 2017. Katargam (Surat)The seat is all set to witness an interesting battle this time in which AAP has fielded its state president Gopal Italia who is considered to be an influential Patidar leader, from the constituency. He had played a key role in the Patidar quota agitation in 2015.&nbsp;

He will face off against Congress candidate Kaplesh Variya, who belongs to the Prajapati community (OBC), and BJP candidate Vinodbhai Amrishbhai Mordiya.PorbandarA tough battle is expected on the Porbandar seat where the BJP has fielded its sitting MLA and four-time winner Babu Bokhiria once again.&nbsp;

He is pitted against Congress candidate Arjun Modhwadia and AAP`s Jeevan Jungi.Bokhiria had won the seat in 1995, 1998, 2012 and 2017. In 2002 and 2007, Bokhiria was defeated by his arch-rival and former Gujarat Congress president Arjun Modhwadia.&nbsp;

Both are face-to-face this time too.Kutiyana (Porbandar)Kandhalbhai Jadeja, son of late don Santokben Sarmanbhai Jadeja, is contesting on the Samajwadi Party ticket. He had won the 2017 Assembly elections on the NCP ticket, however, quit the party recently after he was denied a ticket. He is pitted against BJP`s Dheliben Odedra, AAP`s Bhimabhai Makvana, and Congress` Nathabhai Odedra.The voting in Gujarat will take place on December 1 and 5, and the counting of votes will be held on December 8.&nbsp;

Gujarat Assembly election Phase 1: A look at key players, constituencies in PM Modi's home turf

An average 59.24 per cent voter turn-out was recorded as of 5 pm on Thursday across 89 Assembly seats in the first phase of Gujarat elections, election officials said.

While voting began at 8 in the morning and ended at 5 pm, the final turn-out would be higher as the process continued at the polling stations where voters had arrived before 5 pm and were standing in queues.

The fate of 788 candidates will be decided in the first phase.

Barring a few incidents, polling was largely peaceful across all 89 seats in south Gujarat and Saurashtra-Kutch regions which went to polls in the first phase.

The voter turn-out figure was provisional as data from some polling stations had not been received and it also did not include postal ballots, the Election Commission said. Voting was halted in a few places due to malfunctioning of Electronic Voting Machines as well as control units and Voter Verifiable Paper Audit Trail (VVPATs) but the faulty units were replaced and the process resumed, it added.

Tapi district recorded the highest provisional voting turnout of 72.32 per cent. The tribal-dominated district comprises two Assembly constituencies of Vyara and Nizar. With 68.09 per cent turnout, Narmada district stood second.

Bhavnagar in Saurashtra region recorded the lowest turnout of 51.34 per cent as of 5 pm.

Apart from Narmada, four other districts recorded over 60 per cent voting turnout: Navsari (65.91 per cent), Dang (64.84 per cent), Valsad (62.46 per cent) and Gir Somnath (60.46 per cent).

Polling was largely peaceful barring a few incidents of scuffles between rival groups, the EC said.

Locals protested at Dhrafa village in Jamjodhpur taluka of Jamnagar district as there were no separate polling booths for men and women.

They threatened to boycott voting, claiming that separate booths were always set up in the past.

In Junagadh, a ruckus broke out after police tried to stop a Congress leader who walked to the polling station carrying a gas cylinder on his shoulder to protest against inflation. Such protest was seen in many other places too.

The EC tweeted the picture of 104-year old Ramjibhai who, it said, "participated in the festival of democracy by voting at the polling station instead of opting for a postal ballot."

At least 33 ballot units, 29 control units and 69 VVPATs were replaced in the first three hours of polling at different stations due to malfunctioning, the office of Chief Electoral Officer said in a statement.

"Around 0.1 per cent ballot units, 0.1 per cent control units and 0.3 per cent VVPATs have been replaced in three hours of voting.

"Reserve machine sets are available in all districts with the zonal officer in-charge of that area. Wherever a small or big problem occurs, arrangements have been made to replace them in no time," it added.

Former chief minister Vijay Rupani, state BJP chief C R Paatil, Rajya Sabha member Parimal Nathwani, BJP candidate from Jamnagar (North) Rivaba Jadeja, former Leader of Opposition Paresh Dhanani, state Aam Aadmi Party president Gopal Italia were among those who voted early.

While Rivaba Jadeja voted in Rajkot, her husband and cricketer Ravindra Jadeja voted in Jamnagar.

AAP's Italia questioned the slow turnout in the initial hours.

"Voting is being deliberately slowed down in Katargam AC. @ECISVEEP If you have to work this way under the pressure of the BJP goons, then why are you holding elections? An average of 3.5 percent voting was done in the entire state but only 1.41 per cent in Katargam. Don't stoop so low to defeat a small child," he said in a tweet.

Voting for the second phase will be held on December 5, and counting of votes on December 8.

Former Republican US vice-presidential candidate Sarah Palin failed in her bid to make a political comeback, losing the House of Representatives seat in Alaska to Democrat Mary Peltola, for a second time.

Peltola, who had earlier defeated Palin in a special election in August-- necessitated by the death of sitting Representative Dan Young-- secured her full term in Congress.

She is the first Native Alaskan in the House of Representatives.&nbsp;

Palin had quit politics in 2009 after an unsuccessful vice presidential bid 2009. However, the former mayor of Alaska's Wasilla announced her return in a statement released in August

"Public service is a calling, and I would be honoured to represent the men and women of Alaska in Congress, just as Rep. Young did for 49 years," she had said at the time.

After a challenging year, Kazakhstan holds snap presidential elections, Tokayev expected to win

Tens of thousands of people demonstrated Sunday in Mexico City to denounce a proposed reform which they insist will undermine the independent body which organizes the country's elections.

Protesters chanted "Hands off INE," or National Electoral Institute, as they made their way along Paseo de Reforma in the city center to oppose the change championed by President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador.

"We are gathered here with one clear and important goal: to defend the electoral system that several generations of Mexicans built," former INE chairman Jose Woldenberg told the crowd in a speech at the close of the procession.

Lopez Obrador alleges that the INE endorsed fraud when he ran unsuccessfully for the presidency in 2006 and 2012, before winning in 2018.&nbsp;

Under his proposal, the INE would be replaced by a new body with members chosen by voters instead of lawmakers and with a smaller budget. Political parties would also receive less money from the government for campaigning.

Lopez Obrador's critics say he is damaging democratic checks and balances with his attacks on the INE and other institutions.

His proposals, which involve amending the constitution, require support from at least two-thirds of lower house lawmakers.

Many of the demonstrators wore pink -- the color associated with the INE.

Graciela Aberel, a 53-year-old English teacher, said the proposed change amounts to letting the government organize elections, as was the case before INE was created in 1990.

"What he wants is for all the elections to depend on the government, so as to manipulate them at his whim and be able to stay in power," said Aberel.

The next presidential election is scheduled for 2024, when Lopez Obrador's six-year term ends. Presidents here can only serve one term. &nbsp;

Some in the crowd carried banners that read, "I am not corrupt, class-conscious, racist or hypocritical." This alluded to adjectives the president used last week to describe those who planned to take part in Sunday's rally.

High profile people from the world of politics also took part in the rally, such as former president Vicente Fox and the speaker of the chamber of deputies, Santiago Creel. Both are members of the opposition conservative PAN party.

The rally, which came on the president's 69th birthday, was so big that many people did not fit into the area where the closing speech was delivered.

Francisco Videla, a 50 year old merchant, said the protest was not just against the current government.

"It is against any government that, now or in the future, wants to take control of elections," said Videla.

The president's proposal would also reduce the number of seats in the lower house of congress from 500 to 300, and those in the Senate from 128 to 96.

Thousands march in Mexico against proposed electoral reforms

On Wednesday, Hong Kong’s Independent Commission Against Corruption (ICAC), detained four people who allegedly urged others to cast blank votes or not vote during the Legislative Council elections in December last year. The move was seen as a violation of the elections ordinance amended last year which makes it illegal to incite others to boycott a poll.&nbsp;

According to the ICAC, those detained were between the ages of 29 to 58 and had supposedly reposted or displayed on their respective social media pages posts from democracy activists like former lawmaker Ted Hui Chi-fung, ex-district councillor Yau Man-chun or activist Sunny Cheung Kwan-yang.&nbsp;

The agency added that the material had “incited others to cast blank votes or not to vote.” Notably, democracy activist Cheung and former district councillor Man-chun are overseas. Among the four suspects detained are physiotherapist Wong Chi-yan (42) and Mabel Yick (58) are accused of sharing content by former legislator Hui.&nbsp;

On the other hand, the 44-year-old graphic designer, Wu Hong-ki and the 29-year-old, finance dealer Kwok Kin-chiu shared the content originally posted by the two activists overseas.&nbsp;

In 2021, the Legco passed an amendment which reads, “inciting another person not to vote, or to cast an invalid vote, by activity in public during [an] election period”. If convicted the four people, in line with this amendment, can face up to three years in jail and a maximum fine of HK$200,000 ($25,000).&nbsp;

This came after China’s overhaul of Hong Kong’s electoral system in a bid to ensure only “patriots” were in positions of power in the city, reported the South China Morning Post. The December elections were the first city-wide election since the amendment was passed. In a statement, the IACA said that arrest warrants were issued against the three original authors last year.&nbsp;

Notably, it is not illegal for people to cast a void ballot or even refuse to vote. The turnout at last year’s overhauled “patriots” hit a record low amid crackdowns on the city’s freedoms by China.&nbsp;

This speech was made at a press conference in his official residence where he was surrounded by dozens of ministers and allies, “I have always been labelled as anti-democratic and, unlike my accusers, I have always played within the four lines of the constitution,” said Bolsonaro, reported the Associated Press. This loss also makes him the first Brazilian president to lose re-election.&nbsp;

Bolsonaro’s remarks came nearly 44 hours after he lost the election during which protestors blocked highways after his defeat.&nbsp;

During his address, he called these demonstrations a result of “indignation and a sense of injustice" over the vote, calling them a “popular movement”. He also went on to thank the voters who supported him.

Perhaps, the red tide sweeping the continent is far too powerful for any modern-day Canute to want it rolled back; and, reality requires even the world’s anti-left leaders such as US President Joe Biden and French President Emmanuel Macron to accept the inevitable when the forces of regressive nationalism are on the rise in large parts of the world.&nbsp;

The leftward shift in South America began in 2020 in Bolivia; gained momentum in 2021 with right-wing politicians being worsted in presidential elections in Peru, Chile, Honduras and Nicaragua; and, continues on its winning trajectory. The first to score in 2022 was Colombia and now it is Brazil rooting for Lula and his pro-poor policies which are opposed to the ecological degradation that was rampant under Bolsanaro.&nbsp;

Lula’s victory is far more important than that of the left in that region. Brazil’s population, the size of its economy and its place in international bodies and multilateral forums invest the political outcome with a significance that should resonate far beyond South America. &nbsp;

Conventional, and dominant narratives, have presented that course of democracy as moving from the West to the rest of the world. (This “West” excludes South America). Less known and taught are that South American countries experienced their first democratic impulses in the early decades of the nineteenth century. The revival of truly inclusive and representative democracies in South America striving for equity, justice and accountability and founded on a new political language may now shape new accounts of the history of democracy. &nbsp;

Anachronistic accounts of history that flog the theme of the best of democracy flowing only from the West to the rest may be in for revision. At a time when the US, Europe and Asia are witnesses to the rise of backward nationalism, violent majoritarianism and neo-fascist forces, election outcomes in South America are cause for hope. &nbsp;

There is a message in these mandates that the 'advanced' West would do well to heed.
