Iran's supreme leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei said Saturday that President Donald Trump has "disgraced" US prestige and would be the ultimate loser from renewing sanctions on the Islamic republic.

"This new US president... has disgraced the remnant of America's prestige and that of liberal democracy. America's hard power, that is to say, their economic and military power, is declining too," he said on his Persian Twitter account, quoting a speech in Tehran.

A defiant Khamenei dismissed the renewed US sanctions -- including an oil embargo -- that take effect on Monday.

"The challenge between the US and Iran has lasted for 40 years so far and the US has made various efforts against us: military, economic and media warfare," he said. &nbsp;

"There's a key fact here: in this 40-year challenge, the defeated is the US and the victorious is the Islamic republic."

Trump announced in May he was withdrawing from the 2015 nuclear deal and reimposing sanctions, sparking outrage among world powers who say Iran has been complying with commitments to restrict its atomic programme.

Washington says it wants a new deal with Iran, curtailing its regional interventions and missile programme -- demands which have been flatly rejected by Tehran.

"America's goal in taking all these measures has been to regain the domination it had" prior to Iran's 1979 Islamic revolution that overthrew the pro-Western shah, Khamenei said.

'Self-sufficiency'&nbsp;

The renewed sanctions are designed "to paralyse the (Iran's) economy and keep it backwards. However, it has resulted in encouraging a movement towards self-sufficiency in the country," Khamenei added.

"Our youth, across the country, support independence. Some may not be so religious but they are sensitive towards domination by foreigners."

On Friday, the US said it would add 700 individuals and entities to its Iran blacklist and push the SWIFT global banking network to cut off Tehran as Washington applies "maximum pressure" to cripple the country's economy.

Secretary of State Mike Pompeo said eight countries -- believed to include India, Japan and possibly China -- would be given waivers to continue importing Iranian oil in order to avoid upsetting the global crude market, but only on condition they slow their purchases.

The reimposition of sanctions "is aimed at depriving the regime of the revenues it uses to spread death and destruction around the world", Pompeo said.

"Our ultimate aim is to compel Iran to permanently abandon its well-documented outlaw activities and behave as a normal country."

Britain, France, Germany and the European Union strongly condemned the latest actions from Washington in a joint statement, and have vowed to preserve the nuclear deal, known formally as the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA).

"The JCPOA is a key element of the global nuclear non-proliferation architecture and of multilateral diplomacy," they said.

"It is crucial for the security of Europe, the region, and the entire world. The JCPOA is working and delivering on its goal."

"The number one issue certainly is Donald Trump. African American voters in our polling, but also in polling by other companies, really don't like Donald Trump. The emotion that Donald Trump generates, the two big emotions are anger on the one hand and disrespect on the other," said Fernandez.

The polls echo sentiments on the street.

"It is clear that he has such disdain for people of colour," said Dan Reed, a Democratic voter in Maryland.

Sixty-nine-year-old Democrat Donna Graham-Harris came of age during the civil rights movement of the 1960s.

"I was around with Nixon and Reagan. They never disrespected us. They may not have liked us to a certain degree, but they did not disrespect us as a race," she said.

Trump courted the black vote during his presidential campaign. As president, he often brags about low rates of black unemployment. But polling suggests most African Americans haven't seen a significant rise in wages, and they don't credit Trump for the strong economy.

"He has inherited these improving economic conditions because of President Obama, and he certainly doesn't deserve credit for them," Dan Reed said.

Trump has welcomed the support of high-profile African Americans like rapper Kanye West.

Fernandez said his institution polled in particular the question of how African American voters feel about Kanye West supporting Donald Trump. The result, he said, shows that Kanye West actually has a negative impact on black voters in regards to their perceptions of Trump.

But disdain for Trump alone may not be enough to drive high African American turnout.

"Democrats certainly are going to always get the majority of the black vote, but that's not enough. It's not a question of what percentage of the black vote they get, it's what percentage of the black vote turns out to vote. And that really comes down to issues," Fernandez said.

African American turnout will come down to whether candidates have been speaking to the issues black voters care about, including tighter gun control measures, expanded health care coverage and an increase in the national minimum wage, he explained.

The US Supreme Court on Friday rejected a request by President Donald Trump's administration to halt a trial set to begin on Monday that will test the legality of the government's contentious decision to ask people taking part in the 2020 national census whether they are citizens.

The justices announced the action in a one-sentence order. Three conservative justices - Clarence Thomas, Samuel Alito and Neil Gorsuch - said they would have granted the request for an indefinite postponement of the trial. Trump's new appointee to the nine-member court, Brett Kavanaugh, did not state publicly how he voted on the matter.

And last, but not the least, is the looming spectre of protectionism, with traditional markets like the US, Europe and even Africa looking out for local talent and creating barriers for free movement of professionals from India.

It does not help that Indian nationals continue to account for the overwhelming majority of H-1B and L-1 visas issued (74 per cent in FY 2017).

With all the pressure on Indian firms, local employment is being increased and the number of visas sponsored by Indian firms continues to decline each year with Nasscom recording a 55 per cent decline in new H-1B petitions for initial employment from FY 2014 levels of 18,709 to 8,468 in FY2017.

The response of the Indian industry has always been in three dimensions. The first is the fact that India's IT sector is a "net creator" of jobs in the US, directly supporting over 4 lakh jobs in the US. In the last four years alone, American jobs supported by Indian companies grew by 10 per cent annually compared to annual US job growth of less than 2 per cent. The second is the help given to thousands of the US businesses to improve their operations, create new products and services and gain market share through superior global competitiveness. The participation of Indian H-1B and green card holders in cutting-edge research has made the US the dominant tech nation for decades, an edge that the US can ill afford to lose.

The third and possibly the most compelling argument is that the US Department of Labor estimates that there will be 2.4 million unfilled jobs in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) by 2018, with half of these in IT related roles, and while Indian companies have stepped in to fill the gap, the annual number of IT specialists from India working on temporary visas is about 0.009 per cent of the 158-million strong US workforce.

It would, of course, be unrealistic to expect any softening of the US stance for the immediate future. The industry needs to protect its revenues by embracing new models that are driven by IP creation, local hiring and more intense offshore capability building. With digital transformation becoming the need of the day for all clients, building multi-stakeholder platforms and re-skilling the existing workforce on all shores in artificial intelligence, machine learning, data sciences and user experience design will be the best way to protect and enhance both revenues and industry reputation globally. The industry will make it happen.

Amid H-1B visa row, Indian IT industry faces many challenges

In a brief joint statement after their meeting in the Kremlin, Putin praised "friendship, mutual support and help" which mark the two countries' relations through the decades, and said the two leaders had "substantive and effective talks".&nbsp;

Diaz-Canel invited Putin to visit Cuba in 2019 and said he would assure the continuity of the "legacy" of the relations between Moscow and Havana built since the Soviet period.

The Cuban leader last met Putin in Russia in 2016 as first vice president, discussing economic cooperation.

Diaz-Canel flew into Moscow on Thursday for a three-day visit accompanied by Foreign Minister Bruno Rodriguez and other officials.

Russia's oil company Rosneft has begun offshore drilling on Cuba's shelf, the Kremlin said Friday.

Military cooperation would also be on the agenda, Peskov said, adding that the topic was "quite sensitive" and he could not give details.

He declined to comment on a report in the Kommersant daily that Moscow would lend Havana more than $50 million to buy Russian arms.

After two years on the sidelines, Democrats are hoping anger over gun control, healthcare and the confirmation of Brett Kavanaugh to the Supreme Court will fuel a 'blue wave' in the midterm congressional elections on Tuesday (November 6).

"November is coming" has become a mantra for Democrats who will likely take control of the House of Representatives but are a longshot to take control of the Senate, according to Carroll Doherty, director of political research for the Pew Research Center.

While political analysts don't expect massive gains by Democrats, President Donald Trump and Republicans aren't taking any chances. In the week leading up to the election, Trump has scheduled rallies, sometimes as many as two a day, in states with tight congressional races.

To take control of the House, Democrats need to gain 23 seats held by Republicans. Historically, the party that holds the White House typically loses seats in the first congressional elections after a president's initial two years in office.

"You lose the midterm, we are going to go through nothing but fights. We are going to be fighting to keep what you have, they are going to want to take it away. You have to go out, we can't be complacent," Trump said.

In addition to stalling the Trump's legislative agenda, a Democrat-controlled House could examine everything from his long-elusive tax returns to possible business ties with Russia and conflicts of interest, congressional sources say.

While some Democrats have called for Trump's impeachment, the party's leadership have been more cautious --- and are reportedly waiting until the outcome of Special Counsel Robert Mueller's probe of Russian meddling in the 2016 US elections and possible Trump campaign collusion with Moscow

"The big question is do the Democrats have the discipline and unity to pull this off. Ordinarily, I'd be skeptical but I think there's enough anger on the part of Democrats against Donald Trump who they believe is destroying our democracy, that if they win the House, they will get their act together to launch disciplined investigations," Allan Lichtman, the author of 'The Case For Impeachment' and a history professor at American University, said.

Lichtman is quick to point out that only the House of Representatives has the power to introduce impeachment articles and that the guidelines are intentionally broad.

"It's a combined legal, moral and political judgment. It doesn't require an indictable crime. That's why the Constitution says high crimes and misdemeanors," Lichtman said.

Actions taken before entering office can also be taken into consideration, said Licthman.

In July, a group of Republicans introduced articles of impeachment to remove Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein, who oversees the federal probe of Russia's role in the 2016 election.

It was ultimately rejected by US House Speaker Paul Ryan.

House Democratic leader Nancy Pelosi noted that Rosenstein was a Republican appointee and said the Republican lawmakers were undermining the judicial system with a politically motivated action.

Trump, in recent weeks has veered from his standard remarks to address the possibility of an impeachment.

"If you fight back today, it's called obstruction. No no no. We fight back. Call it whatever the hell you want. We fight back," Trump said.

At rally in Rochester, Minnesota, Trump speculated about Pelosi becoming the next Speaker of the House, adding, "Don't do that to me."

Both Republicans and Democrats have reported high levels of enthusiasm for the upcoming midterm elections -- a fact Doherty believes is linked to the strong feelings on both sides about Trump. While midterm elections historically have low turnout, Doherty believes the unusually high levels of enthusiasm could result in a large turnout.

Chinese Premier Li Keqiang told a visiting delegation of seven US Republican lawmakers on Thursday that he hoped their two countries can meet "halfway" amid friction over trade, security and other issues.

He said he would have a news conference close to Washington on Thursday with one of the women who claimed she was sexually assaulted by Mueller in 2010, and that the other four women still needed to be vetted.

Jennifer Taub, a professor at Vermont Law School, said she received an email on October 22 from an individual offering to compensate her if she would discuss her "past encounters" with Mueller, who she says she has never met.

Taub said she found the email, a copy of which was seen by Reuters, to be "creepy" and forwarded it to Mueller's office. The email was sent to her by a person who claimed to be a researcher at Surefire Intelligence, Ltd.

Reuters was unable to connect with anyone at phone numbers listed on Surefire Intelligence's website.

Burkman declined to say if he was working with Surefire.

Mueller is leading the politically sensitive investigation into Russian meddling and possible collusion between Republican Donald Trump's 2016 campaign team and Russian officials.

Trump flew into the city with wife Melania to pay his respects at the Tree of Life synagogue, but many in the largely Democratic city say his rhetoric and vitriolic tweets have fanned white supremacy and are fueling a spike in anti-Semitism across the United States.

The rally began with an organizer reading aloud from an open letter written by a group of Pittsburgh Jewish leaders to Trump, telling him he bears responsibility for the shooting and asking him not to come.
