Dry weather conditions prevailed in Uttar Pradesh with state capital Lucknow recording a maximum temperature of 43.1 degrees Celsius, three degrees above normal.

Continuing its efforts to establish an environment-friendly network, the Delhi Metro has become the first ever project in the country to receive power generated from a waste-to-energy plant.

The Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) said it has started receiving 2 MW power from a 12 MW capacity waste-to-energy plant set up in Ghazipur.

"DMRC is receiving the power since the beginning of this month from this facility which is being utilised at the Vinod Nagar Receiving Sub-station (RSS) for meeting the operational requirements of Pink Line of Delhi Metro," said a press statement issued on Tuesday.

"DMRC will take approximately 17.5 million units per annum from this plant. However, the energy offtake will depend upon the actual generation of the plant," it said.

The waste-to-energy plant set up by East Delhi Waste Processing Company Limited (EDWPCL) is based on a Public Private Partnership (PPP) involving the Delhi government and East Delhi Municipal Corporation (EDMC), besides the EDWPCL.

"The state of the art facility is set up to process above 1,500 tonnes per day (TPD) of waste and generate 12 MW of green power. The plant is India's first Euro norms compliant waste-to-energy facility," the DMRC said.

The plant will mitigate over 8 million tons of Greenhouse Gases (GHG) over the life of the project, thus combating global warming.

The Delhi Metro has been working continuously towards the conservation of the environment since the inception of the organisation. It is the first ever rail based organisation in the world to claim carbon credits.

The DMRC has also commissioned a facility at Rohini on PPP model with IL&amp;FS Environmental Infrastructure &amp; Services Ltd (IEISL) for recycling of Construction and Demolition (C&amp;D) waste with a capacity of 150 tons per day.

Currently, DMRC is producing 28 MW of solar power from the various rooftop solar power plants, which have been set up in its stations, depots and residential premises.

The mass transit operator has also started to receive solar power from the off-site solar power plant at Rewa in Madhya Pradesh.

In construction also, DMRC plants 10 trees for each tree that is cut. Close to 4 lakh vehicles are being removed from the streets because of the Delhi Metro.&nbsp;

The decision comes ten days after the ruling AAP suffered a massive defeat and lost all seven Lok Sabha seats in Delhi in the general elections.

The party contested 40 seats across nine states and Union Territories and could win only one seat-Sangrur in Punjab.

Tiwari alleged that the scheme is an attempt to buy votes.

"This is only a beginning, there would be many announcements in the coming time. They had said that they will win 7 Lok Sabha seats but later he said that this was not their election. They are trying to buy votes," he said.

"For 1.5 crore women in Delhi, there are only 3,800 buses. He had promised to deploy Marshals for the safety of women and panic buttons in buses, it seems he himself is now panicking. He cannot understand what new tactic to use to mislead people of Delhi," the BJP leader said.

Tiwari, who won the parliamentary seat of North East Delhi, said that BJP will bring a scheme in which no one has to pay for tickets in buses if voted to power in the national capital.&nbsp;

"We are expecting this to continue for the next two days. In Delhi, we are not expecting rain. As per our forecast, the maximum temperature here can be as high as 46-degrees. It will gradually come down," he said.

Mahapatra also predicted that around June 6, monsoon will be hitting Kerala. The southwest monsoon is expected to hit Odisha coast within two weeks after its onset in Kerala.

"Expecting monsoon to arrive near Kerala around June 6. At present, monsoon has covered some extreme southern parts of the Arabian Sea and parts of southwest-southeast-east central Bay of Bengal, the Andaman sea, and Andaman Nicobar islands. Will work with PM Modi for betterment of people of Delhi: Arvind Kejriwal after losing on all 7 seats

Fearing manipulation, the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) on Monday wrote to Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) Sunil Arora, seeking deployment of additional observer and security forces at the strong rooms.

AAP has alleged the opposition parties have "planned attempts to gerrymander with EVMs a day or two ahead of the actual counting on May 23."

"I have strong reasons to believe our political adversaries will attempt to open strong rooms housing EVMs and manipulate or replace the machines as a handful of such incidents in the past have been witnessed," AAP's south Delhi candidate Raghav Chadha stated in the letter to Arora on Monday.

"Alarming as it may be, this would not be the first time such an attack on the electoral process would take place," Chadha, also a national spokesperson of AAP, has further stated in the letter.

"You may recall the municipal elections of 2017, at which time, specifically in a ward falling within South Delhi parliamentary constituency, strong rooms were violated and seals had been broken prior to the day assigned for counting," reads the letter.

"In addition to the already appointed Election Observer whose role is to oversee the entire electoral process, we request the ECI to appoint another independent observer whose sole focus shall be to maintain a watchful eye on strong rooms and ensure safety and security of EVMs. Until the declaration of results, the observer must ensure safe custody and integrity of EVMs."

"We request the CRPF security at Jijabaji Institute, where South Delhi's EVMs are housed, be tightened. It is further requested that additional CRPF personnel may be deployed to keep a watch over the strong rooms round the clock."

Rain hits Delhi, brings mercury down

Afghanistan President Ashraf Ghani's Special Representative for Regional Affairs for Consensus on Peace, Mohammad Umer Daudzai, has arrived in New Delhi and will hold a meeting with External affairs minister Sushma Swaraj.

Daudzai is also the CEO of the High Peace Council, established to negotiate peace with the Taliban.

The former interior minister was appointed the special envoy in December of 2018 and was tasked with creating a regional consensus on the Afghan peace process.

Ahead of the visit Sayed Ihsan Taheri, Director Media to the high peace council said, "Everyone knows that India is one of the fewer states truly supporting Afghan-led Peace Process."

His presence in Delhi is a major development in the backdrop of increased engagement by India with regional countries and world powers on the Afghan peace process. New Delhi backs an "Afghan-owned, Afghan-led and Afghan-controlled" peace process.

India, Russia meet on Afghanistan

On Wednesday, Joint secretary at Ministry of external affair's Pakistan Afghanistan and Iran desk, Deepak Mittal met Russia's Special Representative on Afghanistan Zamir Kabulov in Moscow for bilateral Consultations on Afghanistan.

India last year had participated at Moscow talks on Afghanistan at a &nbsp;non-officially by sending two former envoys — Former Indian Ambassador to Afghanistan Amar Sinha &amp; Former Indian High Commissioner to Pakistan TCA Raghavan.&nbsp;

India, Iran on Afghanistan

On Tuesday during Iranian foreign minister Javad Zarif's 2 days India visit Afghanistan was discussed during his meetings with his Indian counterpart Sushma Swaraj.

Iran's Chabahar port plays a crucial role in India's connectivity plans with Afghanistan. During the meet, both sides expressed satisfaction at the operationalization of the interim contract on the &nbsp;Chabahar Port between India Ports Global Limited (IPGL) and Ports and Maritime Organization (PMO).

India, the US on Afghanistan

Last week US special representative on Afghanistan &nbsp;Zalmay Khalilzad visited India, his 2nd visit to New Delhi this year. A release from the US embassy on the visit said both sides "agreed that Afghan gains of the last 18 years must be preserved and built upon" and "Ambassador Khalilzad will continue to consult with Indian counterparts as the peace process moves forward."

While recognizing Indian contribution to Afghanistan's development, the release stated, "Afghanistan’s political future is for Afghans to decide through an inclusive and legitimate process."

India, China on Afghanistan

Chinese Special Envoy on Afghanistan Ambassador Deng Xijun also paid a visit to India last week on Friday during which he held discussions with Foreign Secretary Vijay Gokhale.&nbsp;

Both sides agreed to "consult closely on the evolving situation in Afghanistan" and "carry forward" the decision taken by PM Modi and Chinese President Xi Jinping during informal Wuhan summit on joint cooperation in Afghanistan.

Since then both countries have jointly trained Afghan diplomats in New Delhi and Bejing.

India is the largest donor to the landlocked South Asian country in the region with development assistance exceeding $3 billion and has built several infrastructure projects in the country including the Afghan parliament and the India Afghanistan friendship dam in Herat province.

AAP's South Delhi candidate Raghav Chadha said on Sunday that voting in the city-state was a positive sign for his party but the BJP workers had done 'bogus votes'&nbsp;in Sangam Vihar during the sixth phase of the Lok Sabha election.

He also alleged that police and the Election Commission officials helped the BJP in manipulating voters.

Chadha said,&nbsp;"BJP worker are sitting outside the polling station and they are forcing people to vote for the BJP. The police are helping them by providing them with fruit juices."

Earlier in the day, the AAP leader alleged,&nbsp;"At Aruna Asaf Ali school booth in Tughlaqabad extension under Sangam Vihar legislative assembly constituency in South Delhi parliamentary constituency, there is widespread bogus voting being employed by the BJP."

"There is one person who was caught by us voting continuously in the booth. People want to get rid of Ramesh Bidhuri as they are fed up of his abusive behaviour. Due to this factor, BJP is employing unfair means but we would not allow this to continue."

"The person who was engaged in bogus voting has been caught and the police inspector employed at the booth who was lax in carrying out his duty has been removed from here," he said.

Senior citizens and first-time voters stole the show with their enthusiasm as they arrived at different polling stations across the six states and capital of Delhi to cast their votes.

"I am voting for the country. I want to see India on the first position," said 88-year-old Sardar Charan Singh at a booth in Madhu Vihar.

Wheelchair-bound Satya Devi, another octogenarian voter in the capital appealed to all to vote.

"Voting is important for all. I want development in Delhi and want the government to work for public benefit," she remarked.

Most first-time voters were exercised to a part of the elections in the world's largest democracy.

"I was very excited to exercise my right to vote for the first time. I came early to avoid the rush. I want to say to everyone to go vote. Voting is important if people want to be heard," a first-timer, Bhavya said.

Delhi Police Commissioner Amulya Patnaik told PTI that elaborate arrangements, according to the instructions of the Election Commission of India, are in place to ensure no anti-social element causes any menace.

Security personnel have been deployed at polling booths and special reserve parties and policemen are patrolling vulnerable areas, the police said.

The Police Control Room Unit will also stay alert to calls of any complaints being made, especially relating to the election process, they added.

"The model code of conduct is being strictly enforced. There is a special watch on border areas to foil any attempt to infiltrate by anti-social elements to cause disruption. There will be a strict vigil to ensure malpractices like liquor peddling and movement of anti-social elements with a purpose to influence voters do not happen," Patnaik said.

Anti-terror measures are also in place and special arrangements have been made to check sabotage of polling booths, including election rigging, the Deputy Commissioner of Police (New Delhi) and the spokesperson of the force, Madhur Verma, said.

The officer added that extra picket teams have been deployed in border areas too. Amid loud cheers, Gambhir waved to hundreds of people during the roadshow.

"I really want to contribute something to the country and whatever our Prime Minister has done in the last five years.

I want to take that legacy forward. I will try to work as much as I can with an honest heart and clear intentions," Gambhir told ANI.

On Monday, the BJP had announced that Gambhir would contest the ongoing Lok Sabha polls from East Delhi Lok Sabha constituency.

Gambhir is pitted against Congress` Arvinder Singh Lovely and Atishi of AAP from the seat.

A Padma Shri awardee, Gambhir joined the BJP on March 22 in the presence of Union Ministers Ravi Shankar Prasad and Arun Jaitley.Delhi, which has seven Lok Sabha constituencies, will go to polls on May 12.

The counting of votes will take place on May 23.

Haryanvi singer-dancer Sapna Choudhary and rebel AAP MLA Kapil Mishra also accompanied Tiwari.&nbsp;
