Stuart Broad dismissed David Warner for a third duck in as many Test innings at Old Trafford on Saturday as the England paceman continued to torment the Australia opener in the Ashes series.

Broad, bowling from around the wicket, had left-hander Warner lbw sixth ball to leave Australia none for one in their <a href="https://www.wionews.com/sports/ashes-2019-england-301-all-out-against-australia-in-fourth-test-248308">second innings of the fourth Test</a>.

Broad also had Warner caught behind for nought in Australia's first innings 497-8 declared, having had him lbw for nought in the second innings of England's dramatic one-wicket win in the third Test at Headingley.

This is Warner's first Test series since a 12-month ban for his role in a ball-tampering scandal in South Africa.

But this Ashes has seen the 32-year-old Warner, now playing in his 78th Test, become Broad's 'bunny'.

Saturday's dismissal meant 33-year-old fast-medium bowler Broad had now taken Warner's wicket six times this series for a cost of 32 runs in 93 balls.&nbsp;

Warner, who did not even bother to review umpire Marais Erasmus's decision when given out on Saturday, is only the third Australia opening batsman to make three successive noughts in Test cricket after Victor Trumper in 1908 and Graeme Wood in 1980.

Despite Warner's latest early exit — which prompted the now customary mixture of cheers and boos from the home crowd — Australia were still then 196 runs ahead after bowling England out for 301 in their first innings.

While Warner is struggling, star batsman Steve Smith made 211 in Australia's first innings at Old Trafford.

Ashes 2019: Stuart Broad gets David Warner again as Australia opener suffers third straight Test duck

Australia ripped through England to leave the hosts floundering on 54-6 at lunch in their first innings on day two of the third Ashes test at Headingley, still trailing the tourists by 125 runs.

Opener Jason Roy's struggles continued as he edged to the slips for nine, before Yorkshireman Joe Root followed his golden duck at Lord's by lasting one more ball on his home ground without scoring.

Rory Burns went next, gloving one to Tim Paine behind the stumps for nine before England's in-form batsman Ben Stokes, on eight, went for a shot he did not need to and edged to David Warner -- one of four catches taken by the Australia opener.

Joe Denly played and missed at numerous deliveries before departing for 12 -- the only England batsman to make double figures -- with Jonny Bairstow out before lunch for four to leave the hosts in disarray after the morning session.

Ashes 2019: England in disarray, were 54/6 at lunch on Day 2 of 3rd Test

Australia captain Tim Paine won the toss and decided to bat in the first <a href="https://www.wionews.com/sports/anderson-could-hold-key-to-ashes-says-mcgrath-239251">Ashes</a> Test against England at Edgbaston on Thursday.

Ashes-holders Australia has not won a match of any kind at Edgbaston since 2001, while England has won their past 11 internationals at the Birmingham ground.

Australia is looking for their first <a href="https://www.wionews.com/sports/ashes-contest-too-close-to-call-says-former-australia-captain-steve-waugh-238960">Ashes series win</a> in England in 18 years.

"The wicket looks nice and hard and dry," said Tim Paine at the toss. "Hopefully we post a good total and we've got (off-spinner) Nathan Lyon up our sleeve at the back end of the game."

As expected, the visitors included all three players given lengthy bans for their roles in a ball-tampering scandal in South Africa last year -- David Warner, Cameron Bancroft and former captain Steve Smith.

Openers Bancroft and Warner knew they would be booed on their way to the middle, judging by the hostile reception Warner and top-order batsman Smith received during the recent World Cup in England and Wales.

They did not have to wait even that long to face the boo-boys, with the Australia team as a whole jeered onto the field for a pre-match anthem ceremony -- an unusual occurrence before a Test match in England.

Reserve wicketkeeper Matthew Wade was included as a specialist batsman after making three hundred for Australia A on their tour of England.&nbsp;

Usman Khawaja was also back in the top order following a hamstring injury that cut short his involvement in the World Cup, which saw Australia defeated by eventual champions England in an Edgbaston semi-final.

Australia also included experienced paceman Peter Siddle, who has been playing English county cricket this season for Essex, in an attack featuring James Pattinson and Pat Cummins.

"He's a class performer there," said wicketkeeper Paine. "He complements the other two seamers really nicely."

But there was no place for World Cup spearhead Mitchell Starc. &nbsp;

England captain Joe Root named his side on Wednesday.

James Anderson, England's all-time leading wicket-taker, returned after missing last week's win in a one-off Test against Ireland at Lord's.

But World Cup hero Jofra Archer was left waiting for a Test debut after struggling with a side injury.

Fellow World Cup winners Ben Stokes and Jos Buttler returned after being rested against Ireland.

Root had no qualms about losing the toss, saying: "I'm not disappointed at all. It's overcast conditions. It'll be nice to get off to a good start.

"We've go so many great options to go to, especially with the ball. This morning is a great opportunity to exploit that.&nbsp;

"We love playing here, we get fantastic support wherever we go. The atmosphere here, in particular, is extremely exciting."

Australia win toss and bat against England in first Ashes Test

Australia coach Justin Langer says an <a href="https://www.wionews.com/sports/anderson-could-hold-key-to-ashes-says-mcgrath-239251">Ashes</a> return for Cameron Bancroft would be "a great story" but knows he will face a hostile reception from England fans after his ball-tampering ban.

Bancroft, 26, is set to open the batting in Thursday's first Test at Edgbaston, with Australia's top order also likely to feature <a href="https://www.google.com/url?client=internal-uds-cse&amp;cx=006054055338965708568:09spwrlibei&amp;q=https://www.wionews.com/sports/cameron-bancroft-joins-steve-smith-and-david-warner-in-australias-ashes-squad-238644&amp;sa=U&amp;ved=2ahUKEwjlgs2W3tzjAhWL7nMBHW9qDEUQFjACegQIDhAC&amp;usg=AOvVaw0EAcaSZ4lNdf3iTyI_At_Y">David Warner and Steve Smith.</a>

If that is the case, it would mean all three players who were banned for their roles in the ball-tampering scandal in South Africa last year would be in Australia's XI.

Smith and Warner have already experienced plenty of boos from English crowds during the recent World Cup.

Bancroft, not selected for the one-day tournament, will almost certainly experience more of the same given he was the one who applied sandpaper to the ball during a Test away to South Africa in a blatant flouting of cricket's rulebook.

"It would be a great story if he comes back into the team," Langer said at Edgbaston on Tuesday.

"His development after what happened in Cape Town has been extraordinary."

Langer, a former Australia opener, said: "We know what the reception is going to be. There's nothing we can do about it. We don't know (how he will cope) actually, but we'll find out.

"He's a good kid and as tough as anyone you could meet. To endure the scrutiny of the past 14 months, especially the first part of it, I think he's had a pretty good dress rehearsal."

Langer confirmed batsman Usman Khawaja, who missed Australia's World Cup semi-final defeat by England at Edgbaston with a hamstring injury, had been passed fit and would play in the opening match of the five-Test series.

"He's a seasoned pro for us, he averages 40-odd in Test cricket, his hammy is good, he's running well, he's passed all the fitness tests, so he's ready to go," Langer said.

Fast bowler James Pattinson is also set to feature in what would be his first Test since February 2016, lining up alongside Pat Cummins and one of Mitchell Starc, Peter Siddle or Josh Hazlewood in Australia's pace attack.&nbsp;

"There's probably three to be fair - Starcy, Peter Siddle and Josh Hazlewood - for one spot," added Langer.

Langer predicts hostile Ashes reception for Bancroft from England fans

Cameron Bancroft along with Steve Smith and David Warner have been included in Australia's squad for a five-Test Ashes series against England.&nbsp;

Australia have unveiled the 17-member squad for the upcoming Ashes series, which is scheduled to kick-off from August 1&nbsp;at Edgbaston.&nbsp;

All three mentioned&nbsp;batsmen served lengthy bans for their roles in a <a href="https://www.wionews.com/sports/funny-twitter-reactions-on-steve-smiths-ball-tampering-scandal-126440">ball-tampering scandal</a> in South Africa last year.

In a press conference, they had admitted that they used sandpaper to the ball&nbsp;while fielding during a Test in Cape Town against South Africa.&nbsp;

Former captain Smith and his then deputy Warner were given 12-month suspensions by Cricket Australia, with Bancroft banned for nine months.&nbsp;

"We have chosen 17 players as this gives us the cover and flexibility we believe we will need to ensure we are in good shape throughout a demanding schedule of five Test matches in just over six weeks," said Chairman of Selectors Trevor Hohns.&nbsp;

Matthew Wade and Mitchell Marsh have been recalled while uncapped Queenslander Michael Neser is a surprise selection in the pace attack.&nbsp;

Wade, who last played a Test in September 2017, edged out Alex Carey as the squad's reserve wicketkeeper-batsman behind captain Tim Paine.&nbsp;

The pace department is led by world number one Test bowler Pat Cummins, alongside Mitchell Starc, Josh Hazlewood, James Pattinson and Peter Siddle, Marsh and Neser.&nbsp;

Alongside&nbsp;off-spinner Nathan Lyon, all-rounder Marnus Labuschagne will serve as a second spinning option in the team.&nbsp;

"We have opted to select one frontline spinner in Nathan Lyon. We have faith in his ability, we know our strength lies in our pace attack and we have Marnus Labuschagne's leg-spin as another spin option as he has bowled almost 200 overs for county side Glamorgan in first-class cricket this season," said&nbsp;Hohns.&nbsp;

"We believe the squad is an excellent blend of high-quality batsmen and top-class fast bowlers, plus Nathan Lyon, who we regard as the world's best off-spinner in all conditions. It is a good mix of all the talents," he added.&nbsp;

David Warner says he's living the dream playing for Australia at the World Cup and no amount of booing from England fans eager to remind him of his one-year ban for ball tampering is going to spoil his mood.

"That is what it's about, I am living the dream, I am out here at Lord's, playing cricket for my country," he added.

Warner said 12 months out of international cricket and returning to his Randwick-Petersham club had effected a change in his outlook on his sport.

"For me, it is about enjoying the game. When it is taken away from you, you realise what it is all about. Going back to grassroots was fantastic," he said.

"I really saw smiles on people's faces to be out there on a Saturday afternoon, all the volunteers that come down and put time and effort in, whether it is making the drinks, making the lunches,'' said <a href="https://www.google.com/url?client=internal-uds-cse&amp;cx=006054055338965708568:09spwrlibei&amp;q=https://www.wionews.com/sports/world-cup-david-warner-hits-166-as-australia-rack-up-381-against-bangladesh-229016&amp;sa=U&amp;ved=2ahUKEwjf0ae2oInjAhULa94KHXJmDkUQFjAIegQIAhAC&amp;usg=AOvVaw0ajJzv8ta5EITyTV0s3WlU">Warner</a>.

"People's parents, my mum, my dad coming down, it is just great. You can't take that for granted. I am just grateful for the second opportunity to come back here and represent my country and do the country proud. You know I am just excited to be back here and playing World Cup cricket for Australia," added Warner.

Australia's next match is back at Lord's on Saturday against New Zealand, who they beat in the final to win the 2015 World Cup.

David Warner says he's living the dream playing for Australia at the World Cup and no amount of booing from England fans eager to remind him of his one-year ban for ball tampering is going to spoil his mood. The left-handed batsman shared an opening stand of 123 with his captain Aaron Finch as the defending champions beat hosts and pre-tournament favourites England at Lord's on Tuesday to book a place in the semi-finals. It was Warner's seventh match for Australia after returning from the ban for his part in the Newlands scandal and his innings of 53 runs took his tournament tally to 500 at an average of 83.33. There were boos for Warner and his former captain Steve Smith when they took the field but the 32-year-old from the tough southeastern Sydney suburbs was not letting it bother him. World Cup: I thrive on crowd booing, I love it, says Australia's David Warner

Australia <a href="https://www.wionews.com/sports/live-updates-cricket-world-cup-2019-match-32-england-vs-australia-230276">confirmed their place in the semi-finals</a> of the Cricket World Cup on Tuesday with a comprehensive 64-run victory against England.

Australian skipper Aaron Finch made exactly 100 in a total of 285-7 before England slumped to 221 all out with 32 balls left.

The recalled Behrendorff took 5-44 -- his first five-wicket haul in a one-day international -- while Starc became the leading bowler at the tournament with 19 scalps thanks to a haul of 4-43.

For England, who entered the showpiece event as the top-ranked side in ODI cricket, this was a second straight defeat after their shock 20-run loss to Sri Lanka.

The host nation, bidding to win a first World Cup title, can still qualify for the semi-finals but they are likely to need to beat at least one of India and New Zealand in their remaining two group games.

"There are teams that you have confidence playing against but I have had plenty of low scores against England as well," said man-of-the-match Finch.

"It was nipping around first thing. We were as tight as we could be and then took advantage of any width."

England's reply saw them lose a wicket off just the second ball of their chase, with the struggling James Vince -- only playing because Jason Roy was out with a hamstring injury -- bowled by a Behrendorff inswinger.

Starc then took two wickets in nine balls.

Test skipper Joe Root was plumb lbw to an inswinger for eight before England captain Eoin Morgan (four) fell into a hooking trap when a top-edge was held safely by Pat Cummins at fine leg.

Australia, who had lost 10 of their previous 11 ODIS against England, were in complete charge with the hosts now 26-3.

England have surged to the top of the ODI rankings on the back of aggressive run-scoring but the worry for Morgan's men is that too many of their top-order appear to know only one way to bat.

Careless England

Jonny Bairstow, for example, fell next to a careless hook off Behrendorff before Stokes and Jos Buttler (25) repaired some of the damage with a fifth-wicket stand of 71.

Buttler was well caught by Usman Khawaja, running round and staying just inside the deep square leg boundary off Marcus Stoinis.

Stokes defiantly hit Glenn Maxwell for two sixes in three balls but, shortly before completing his fifty, the all-rounder pulled up with a calf injury.

Starc was brought back to take a key wicket and duly obliged with a thunderbolt yorker, his 18th wicket of the tournament, that ended Stokes's 115-ball innings of 89, including eight fours and two sixes.&nbsp;

Stokes's dismissal left England 177-6 in the 37th over and effectively ended the contest. Starc ended the match when he dismissed Adil Rashid.

World Cup: Australia reach semis with 64-run win over arch-rivals England

England captain Eoin Morgan insists it is not his job to tell supporters how to react to shamed Australia stars David Warner and Steve Smith when the arch-rivals meet in a crucial World Cup clash on Tuesday.

Warner and Smith have found themselves booed by some fans in England after returning to international cricket following year-long bans for ball-tampering.

Australia coach Justin Langer has called for the taunts to stop, with India captain Virat Kohli and Pakistan skipper Sarfaraz Ahmed telling their supporters to lay off the duo.

But, although the Australia clash is being played at Lord's -- the 'home of cricket' where crowds are traditionally polite -- Morgan refused to issue a plea to respect Warner and Smith.

"I'm not expecting anything. I think fans and supporters up and down the country will have different reactions, as they will around the world. So we'll see," Morgan told reporters at Lord's on Monday.

"Supporters pay a lot of money, they do. And sport is beautiful in many ways, because it attracts people from far and wide.

"And you often see crowds offering support to both sets of players in the grounds."

'Acceptance will take time'

Morgan added: "You don't know how sports fans will react.

"Just because two guys have been punished, served their punishment and returned to play, it doesn't mean they will be accepted back into the cricket community straight away. It will take time."

England batsman Jonny Bairstow accused Australia of double standards in asking fans to go easy on Warner and Smith because former coach Darren Lehmann had previously urged supporters to verbally abuse England quick Stuart Broad during an Ashes series 'Down Under'.&nbsp;

Asked for his opinion of Bairstow's comments, Morgan said: "I don't have a view on it. I think every instance is different, every team is different.

"I believe that was a long time ago under a different regime. I don't know."

Australia captain Aaron Finch said he was resigned to the taunts continuing but claimed they had not hurt Warner and Smith in any case.

"Whether someone comes out and says do or don't, it's going to happen regardless anyway," said Finch at his pre-match press conference.&nbsp;

"It hasn't affected our boys one bit. I can honestly say that. If anything it's given them a bit more motivation.&nbsp;

"As a player you don't tend to hear a hell of a lot of stuff from the fans.

"I'm sure that's the last thing from Steve or Davie's mind when they walk out to bat, if a handful of people or a whole stadium are booing."&nbsp;

Defeats by Sri Lanka and Pakistan mean England could need to win two of their three remaining group matches against Australia, India and New Zealand to reach the semi-finals.

But Morgan tried to play down the significance of the latest clash with their old enemies by saying: "It's not must-win yet. We don't need to win every game to get to the semi-final."

'Acceptance will take time': Eoin Morgan refuses to issue plea to respect Warner and Smith

Bangladesh's inability to strike with the new ball cost them dearly in their World Cup match against Australia, skipper Mashrafe Mortaza said after their 48-run loss on Thursday.

Bangladesh mounted a spirited chase in pursuit of a 382-run victory target but finished on 333-8 to succumb to their third defeat in six matches.

<a href="https://www.wionews.com/sports/world-cup-david-warner-hits-166-as-australia-rack-up-381-against-bangladesh-229016">David Warner</a>, dropped at the backward point when on 10, smashed 166 and featured in a 121-run opening stand with skipper Aaron Finch (53) to lay the foundation for Australia's imposing total of 381-5.

"We created a few chances, which should have been taken, especially against a big side, you have to take those 50-50 chances," Mashrafe said.

Warner and Finch saw off the first 20 overs without being separated, guiding Australia to 117 and both completing fifties.

Mashrafe reckoned it could have been completely different with an early breakthrough.

"I knew that we needed a wicket at that particular time. They knew if they don't lose wickets early, they can damage us. I think not picking a wicket was the main thing," <a href="https://www.wionews.com/sports/bangladesh-confident-of-beating-anyone-at-world-cup-mashrafe-mortaza-228794">Mortaza </a>said.

Mushfiqur Rahim's unbeaten century and fifties by Tamim Iqbal and Mahmudullah fuelled Bangladesh's gallant charge but their second successive 300-plus total was not enough to upset the reigning champions.

In their previous match, <a href="https://www.wionews.com/sports/bangladesh-beat-west-indies-by-seven-wickets-in-world-cup-228121">Bangladesh</a> chased down a 322-run target against West Indies with 8.3 overs to spare but Mashrafe said it was unfair to expect the batsmen to do it every time.

"It's hard for the batters...350 is always difficult," the all-rounder said.

"On this wicket, even 340 could have been chased down. The batsmen are showing their courage. If you look at our batting, I think everyone has been batting with some intent," added Mortaza.

World Cup: Skipper Mashrafe Mortaza applauds Bangladesh's courageous batsmen

Australia continued their march towards the Cricket World Cup semi-finals on Thursday as a tournament-high 166 by opener David Warner helped them pile up 381-5 before they restricted Bangladesh to 333-8 to win by 48 runs.

Australia's fifth victory in six games put the five-times champions top of the standings on 10 points and looking assured of a top-four finish, probably alongside England, <a href="https://www.wionews.com/sports/world-cup-so-far-india-have-looked-best-will-make-it-to-semis-says-sourav-ganguly-228744">India </a>and New Zealand.

It was the third defeat in six for Bangladesh and though they are still fifth on five points, they will need a run of wins and other results to go their way to make the knockout phase.

Warner and Aaron Finch have been by far the most productive opening partnership in this World Cup and they again did their foundation job, eschewing too many high-risk shots to put on 121.

Finch went first for 53, with <a href="https://www.wionews.com/sports/world-cup-david-warner-hits-166-as-australia-rack-up-381-against-bangladesh-229016">Warner</a>, still something of a shadow of his pre-ban swashbuckling self, moving solidly to three figures for the second time in the tournament.

He then began to connect with some big hits and when he was caught in the deep his tournament-leading aggregate had moved to 447. It was the second-highest score in a World Cup by an Australian - beaten by his own 178 against Afghanistan in 2015.

Usman Khawaja added a stilted but worthy 89 during a mid-innings lull before Glenn Maxwell picked up the pace considerably by smashing 32 from 10 balls - his dashing innings ended by a run out that left him glaring furiously at Khawaja.

BIG HITTING

Marcus Stoinis (17 not out) and Alex Carey (11 not out) continued the big hitting to push the score far beyond anything previously successfully chased in a World Cup.

"Today was a great foundation for our batting. I felt a little bit bogged down and frustrated, I kept hitting fielders but I managed to hang in there," said Warner, who hit 14 fours and four sixes.

Having chased down 322 with eight overs to spare against the West Indies on Monday, Bangladesh would not have been daunted by the prospect of even what would have been the second-highest successful run chase in one-day cricket history.

Their joyous fans certainly gave all the support they could while Shakib Al Hasan and Tamim Iqbal were looking fluent together.

But when Shakib was out for 41 - caught by Warner - and Tamim&nbsp;was bowled by Mitchell Starc to leave them 144-3 at the halfway mark, their hopes were effectively over.

They deserve credit for getting so close, though, as Mushfiqur Rahim and Mahmudullah put together a lively partnership of 127 before Nathan Coulter-Nile had Mahmudullah caught on the boundary for 69 and bowled Sabbir Rahman for a golden duck.

Rahim reached his century to end 102 not out but it was scant consolation as Australia chalked up their 19th victory in 21 ODIs against Bangladesh.

"We had a good partnership at the top of the order but 381 was too much. It has become that every match that needs to be won now, but you never know," <a href="https://www.wionews.com/sports/bangladesh-beat-west-indies-by-seven-wickets-in-world-cup-228121">Bangladesh </a>captain Mashrafe Mortaza said.

But when Shakib was out for 41 - caught by Warner - and Tamim was bowled by Mitchell Starc to leave them 144-3 at the halfway mark, their hopes were effectively over. It has become that every match that needs to be won now, but you never know," Bangladesh captain Mashrafe Mortaza said.

World Cup: David Warner shines as Australia beat Bangladesh by 48 runs

World Cup 2019: Records show Virat, Rohit & Root will dominate

David Warner's 166-run knock against Bangladesh on Thursday impressed the spectators and made headlines but former Australian cricketer Shane Warne is not happy with team's "conservative" approach in Cricket World Cup 2019.&nbsp;

<a href="https://www.wionews.com/sports/world-cup-david-warner-shines-as-australia-beat-bangladesh-by-48-runs-229110">Australia defeated Bangladesh by 48 runs</a> and are&nbsp;steadily inching closer towards the semi-finals with 10 points gained in six games they have played so far, the only game they lost to India.&nbsp;

However, Australia great and spin legend Shane Warne was unhappy over Australia's approach and expressed his opinion in a series of Twitter posts.

"Ps I still believe Australia can challenge India &amp; England for the World Cup trophy, but not with this game style or batting order," Warne said.

"Awesome from Maxwell &amp; a stunning 100 from Warner too. Khawaja doing great, but ridiculous he didn't run," added the outstanding leg-spinner, a key member of Australia's 1999 World Cup-winning side.

"Why wasn't this happening 20 overs ago? As I said in previous tweets, Aust has the firepower but have decided to play conservatively till the last 10 overs! Why?"

But Australian all-rounder Glenn Maxwell told about Warne's tweets by reporters, said, "I think we went at 13s (runs per over) for the last 14 overs so I don't think we went that bad."

"I always respect what Warne says," he said. "For us it's about going out there and doing the best we can.&nbsp;

"And whether or not we're batting slow or fast, I think you're going to get some form of criticism somewhere," he Maxwell.&nbsp;

Ex-Australian cricketer Shane Warne not happy with Australia's 'conservative' approach in Cricket World Cup 2019

In-form opener David Warner hit 166, the highest score of the 2019 Cricket World Cup, as Australia racked up 381&nbsp;against Bangladesh at Trent Bridge on Thursday as rain forced the teams off early with six balls remaining.

Warner, whose second century took his tournament-leading tally to 447 and captain Aaron Finch, with 396 to his name, yet again laid the platform with a carefully-constructed opening stand of 121.

Usman Khawaja added 89, though not at a speed Australian fans would have wanted as the pace slowed before Glenn Maxwell picked it up by smashing 32 from 14 balls before being run out.

Soumya Sarkar was the best of the Bangladesh bowlers, taking three for 58 in eight overs, with <a href="https://www.wionews.com/sports/world-cup-australias-injured-marcus-stoinis-has-a-chance-to-play-against-bangladesh-228574">Marcus Stoinis</a> and Alex Carey still at the crease before a heavy shower ended the action prematurely.

Having chased down 322 with eight overs to spare against the West Indies on Monday week and with Trent Bridge a traditionally high-scoring venue, Bangladesh will have some hope of claiming the victory they almost certainly need to maintain their hopes of reaching the semi-finals.

David&nbsp;Warner&nbsp;gave net bowler Jaykishan Plaha a signed Australia World Cup shirt on Saturday, a week after <a href="https://www.wionews.com/sports/world-cup-net-bowler-hospitalised-after-getting-hit-on-head-by-david-warners-shot-during-practice-225478">hitting the paceman in the head with a drive during a practice session</a> at the Oval.

Australia halted their training session after the incident and Plaha was taken to hospital for checks, which showed no major injury.

"Last week, Jaykishan Plaha was hit on the head by a David&nbsp;Warner&nbsp;drive during an Australia training session," said a post on the official World Cup Twitter feed.

"Today,&nbsp;Warner&nbsp;met both Jaykishan and his mum before play, presented Jaykishan with an Australia shirt and wished him a speedy recovery."

Australia captain Aaron Finch said last week that&nbsp;Warner&nbsp;was "pretty shaken-up" after the net bowler was felled.

Watch: David Warner presents injured net bowler with Australia World Cup shirt

David Warner has overcome the challenges of reintegrating himself into the Australian team and with the explosive opener nearing his best, he could well end up as top scorer in this World Cup, feels assistant coach Ricky Ponting.

After struggling for rhythm in early matches, Warner came close to his damaging best in a match-winning knock of 107 off 111 balls against Pakistan on Wednesday in his fourth game back in Australian colours.

The 32-year-old right-handed batsman sat out for one year, serving a ban imposed by the ICC on ball tampering charges in South Africa last year.

He came out of that ban on March 29, along with his former captain Steve Smith.

Asked if other sides will now be more fearful of Warner, including Sri Lankans whom <a href="http://cms.wionews.com/sports/world-cup-pat-cummins-silent-workhorse-in-australias-squad-while-others-hog-limelight-226914">Australia </a>face on Friday, Ponting said,&nbsp;"I think they should. You know with David Warner at his best, if you miss your line and length then he's going to make you pay.''

"Every game is a different set of challenges for every player. Davey capitalised on Pakistan not executing as well as they could have. We know against Sri Lanka, they'll be well-planned. But <a href="http://cms.wionews.com/sports/this-century-means-a-lot-as-a-batsman-david-warner-226679">Warner </a>at his best is difficult to bowl to and I think he was back to somewhere near his best," Ponting was quoted as saying by 'cricket.Com.Au'

Ponting said the handbrake is off for a rejuvenated Warner and if "he keeps playing like that (against Pakistan) for the rest of the tournament, he's probably going to be the leading run scorer" in this World Cup.

The assistant coach, however, conceded that the challenges of reintegrating himself back into a team after being out of it for over a year weighed on Warner.

"We'd all seen that he (Warner) probably had not been batting as fluently as we're used to seeing. It was more of a mental thing than anything, he was just holding back a little bit and not playing with the freedom we're used to seeing him play with," Ponting said.

"It was just about being a bit freer in everything he did. I think he was just trying a bit too hard, making a statement coming back in a World Cup. Wanting to do everything right and impress everybody rather than just going out and hitting the ball and scoring runs like we've seen him do for 10 years," he said.&nbsp;

Ponting said Warner in earlier matches (before the match against Pakistan) seemed a little bit more worried about getting out than scoring runs but he was told by the <a href="http://cms.wionews.com/sports/world-cup-allan-border-backs-defending-champs-australia-to-keep-building-momentum-226766">Australian </a>support staff to just go out, see the ball and hit the ball.

"We said to him after the last game, 'mate, just go out and see the ball, hit the ball.' He got off to a good start (against Pakistan) and continued on for 30 or 40 overs," Ponting, who spoke to Warner after Australia's 36-run defeat to India on June 9, said.&nbsp;

"You could see by the way he moved into his shots and picking up the length early, he hit a lot of pull shots early in his innings, which is always a good sign for him. He'd taken the handbrake off which has allowed himself to play with a bit more freedom," the former captain said of Warner's innings against Pakistan.

World Cup: Beware of David Warner as he is nearing his best, says Ricky Ponting

Emphasising on the importance of dot balls in limited overs cricket, Australia pacer Pat Cummins is delighted that the hard work he has put in to become accurate is starting to pay off.

Cummins is increasingly looking like the workhorse of this Australian team, plugging away with the wickets while others hog the headlines.

The 26-year-old looked in great rhythm against Pakistan, taking 3 for 33 to derail their chase.

The right-arm pacer has bowled the most number of dot balls in the ongoing World Cup and the two bowlers that follow him are also from Australia -- Mitchell Starc and Nathan Coulter-Nile.

"That's the big improvement in my game in the last couple of years, the ability to hold a length and make it difficult to get runs," Cummins said after <a href="https://www.wionews.com/sports/live-updates-cricket-world-cup-2019-match-17-australia-vs-pakistan-226457">Australia's 41-run win against Pakistan</a> on Wednesday.

"If you give away easy singles then 300 becomes quite an achievable score. Cutting out the singles is huge, it means if you give away a boundary it might not be that big over of ten or 11, it may just be a five or a six," Cummins added.

After they were set 308 for win, <a href="https://www.wionews.com/sports/world-cup-david-warner-stars-in-australias-41-run-win-over-pakistan-226669">Pakistan </a>scored steadily but Australia held their nerve and took wickets at regular intervals.

An eighth-wicket stand between Sarfaraz and Wahab Riaz, who scored 45 from just 39 balls, made it nervy for the defending champions until the last three wickets fell for just two runs - securing a third victory at the World Cup.

"It goes to show that everyone can bat these days. It was a bit closer than we would have liked, so it was good to get those couple of wickets and finish it off. We gave them a bit too much width and suddenly they were back in the game, it's a good lesson to learn," Cummins said.

Cummins and his strike partner Starc have 18 wickets between them in the tournament while the rest of the team have a combined 12.

Australia set a target of 307 on the back of a 146-run opening partnership between Warner (107) and Finch (82).

<a href="https://www.wionews.com/sports/this-century-means-a-lot-as-a-batsman-david-warner-226679">Warner </a>scored his first-century post his one-year international ban for ball-tampering.

"We were so pumped for him, he was really open and honest after the Oval game. He was playing more timid than normal but we saw his mindset change from the start here,'' he said.

"I think if you look over the transition of his career, he's become more measured in his approach. His energy out in the middle is still an example, the way you see him sprinting hard for singles and bouncing down the wicket. He looks really sharp in this tournament," Cummins said.

Australia were cruising after Warner and skipper Aaron Finch (82) laid a stromg foundation with a 14-run opening stand. But Mohammad Amir bowled beautifully in his second spell to return his best ODI figures of 5/30 and stop the defending champions at 307.&nbsp;

"When I got out, we had 70 balls to go. As a batter, you want to bat 50 overs. We should've been around 340-350, credit to Pakistan's bowlers. "Certainly did put us under pressure. Guys like Hassan and Wahab are good strikers of the ball. Hard to stop when they're on a roll. Just had to bowl our best ball, whether it's a length ball or yorker.&nbsp;

"Definitely very disappointing. Lost three wickets in 15 balls from 140/3. To take positives, Hassan Ali batted well, Wahab batted well. Fought in the end but could not finish it off well. Except Amir, others did not bowl well," Sarfaraz said.

<a href="https://www.wionews.com/sports/live-updates-cricket-world-cup-2019-match-17-australia-vs-pakistan-226457">Australia&nbsp;beat Pakistan</a> by 41 runs in Taunton on Wednesday after David Warner hit his first international century following his return from a ball-tampering ban.

Warner made 107 and, with Australia captain Aaron Finch (82), got the defending champions off to a flying start with an opening stand of 146 -- the highest partnership for any wicket at this World Cup to date.

Mohammad Amir dragged Pakistan back into the game with career-best figures of five for 30 in 10 overs but Australia still managed to post a challenging score of 307, which ultimately proved beyond their opponents.

"It means a lot to a batter to get a century," said man-of-the-match Warner. "It was a great effort from Pakistan in the end but our bowlers bowled excellent. They probably got closer than we expected."

Pakistan, after a middle-order collapse that saw them lose three wickets for 11 runs in 15 balls, were all but beaten at 200 for seven in the 34th over.

But captain Sarfaraz Ahmed (40) and the big-hitting Wahab Riaz (45) gave them renewed hope with a stand of 64.

Australia, who lost to India on Sunday, were again looking to Mitchell Starc to get them out of a tight spot, as had done in an earlier win over the West Indies and the fast bowler duly delivered with 2-43.

He had Wahab caught behind got off a thin edge, although it needed an Australia review of an original not out decision to leave Pakistan 264-8

Two balls later, Amir played on for a duck before Glenn Maxwell ended the match with a brilliant direct hit run out of Sarfaraz.

Pakistan chase

Pakistan's chase started badly when Fakhar Zaman fell for a duck uppercutting Cummins to Kane Richardson at third man.

Babar Azam was in superb touch, with 28 of his 30 runs coming in fours, before he mishooked Nathan Coulter-Nile to deep backward square leg.

Opener Imam-ul-Haq was upping the tempo in his 53 when he gloved Pat Cummins (3-33) down the legside to wicket-keeper Alex Carey.

Finch, an occasional slow bowler, grabbed a real bonus wicket when Mohammad Hafeez (46) hit a rank full toss straight to Starc at deep square leg.

And when Shoaib Malik was brilliantly caught for nought by a diving Carey after inside edging Cummins, Pakistan were in dire straits at 147-5.

Both Warner and Steve Smith, also returning from a year-long ban for ball-tampering, had been jeered by fans in previous games but Pakistan fans largely heeded an appeal from Sarfaraz not to boo the pair, preferring to roar chants of "Amir!, Amir!".&nbsp;

World Cup: David Warner stars in Australia's 41-run win over Pakistan

After Australia faced their first defeat in the ongoing ICC Men's Cricket World Cup, team's assistant coach Ricky Ponting admitted that it was their batting which was not up to the mark.

"Our batting was just a little bit off again. We seemed to find the field a lot in the first 10 overs," Cricket.com.au quoted Ponting as saying.

Chasing a mammoth<a href="https://www.wionews.com/sports/world-cup-shikhar-dhawan-shines-as-india-beat-holders-australia-by-36-runs-225791"> target of 353 runs set by India</a>, Australia skipper Aaron Finch, who opened the inning with David Warner, got run out in the 14th over after scoring 36 runs.

Ponting feels that Finch's run out happened at a really crucial time as the team had just started to get momentum.

"The run out happened at a really crucial time (the 14th over). The momentum had just started to turn there, Finchy had started to find the boundary a bit more frequently," he said.

India opening batsman Shikhar Dhawan hammered a ton while the skipper <a href="https://www.wionews.com/sports/world-cup-had-a-point-to-prove-against-australia-says-virat-kohli-225792">Virat Kohli</a> also added 82 runs on the board to help their side post a big target for Australia.

Ponting stated that they also needed a <a href="https://www.wionews.com/sports/world-cup-shikhar-dhawan-ruled-out-for-three-weeks-due-to-injury-226202">Dhawan</a>-like inning in their top-order and that would have had put them in the game.

"We just needed someone at the top to go on and make a big hundred like Dhawan did and we would have been right in the game," Ponting said.

Despite all this, Ponting still has full faith in both the openers as he said,&nbsp;"Finch and Warner are probably as good as openers in the world. Finchy has turned things around really well in the last five or six months, Davey coming back has made runs. By his own admission today, (Warner) probably wasn't at his absolute best. He hit the field too often early on and wasn't able to rotate as he would have liked."

<a href="https://www.wionews.com/sports/watch-steve-smiths-reaction-when-virat-kohli-stopped-indian-fans-from-booing-him-225897">Steve Smith</a> came out to bat before Usman Khawaja and Ponting backed this decision by saying that they wanted a right-hand, left-hand combination during India's perilous spin attack.

"We wanted to have (favourable) left-hand, right-hand (match-ups) with those spinners and we thought Steven plays spin as well as anybody, so that was the only reason. It happens quite a lot in the modern game where you see that right-hand, left-hand combination, especially if they've got a lot of spin," he said.

World Cup: 'Our batting was little bit off', says Ricky Ponting after Australia's defeat against India

India captain Virat&nbsp;Kohli&nbsp;wants cricket's authorities to look into the issue of cricket bails not being knocked off by the ball thanks to new technology.

Australia opener David Warner became the fifth batsman at the World Cup to get an unexpected reprieve after he dragged a ball on to his stump but the impact failed to dislodge the zing bails in <a href="https://www.wionews.com/sports/world-cup-shikhar-dhawan-shines-as-india-beat-holders-australia-by-36-runs-225791">Sunday's match against India</a>.

The southpaw was on one when he inside-edged a Jasprit Bumrah delivery on to his leg stump but much to his delight the bails did not come off.

"I haven't seen that happen so many times in the past,"&nbsp;Kohli&nbsp;told reporters at a briefing.

"I'm sure no team would like seeing stuff like that when you actually bowl a good ball and then you don't get the guy out, the ball hits the stump and the lights don't come on, or the lights come on and the bail comes back on to the stump."

Zing bails –- which contain lights that flash when the ball strikes the wicket –- have been a sore point in the current World Cup.

South Africa's Quinton de Kock, Sri Lankan Dimuth Karunaratne, West Indian Chris Gayle and Mohammad Saifuddin of Bangladesh have already enjoyed similar luck at this World Cup but several former players felt it was harsh on the bowlers.

"This can’t keep happening with the bails!!! Hard enough being a bowler nowadays... needs changing," tweeted former England captain Nasser Hussain.

Former Pakistan speedster Shoaib Akhtar also took to Twitter to express his dismay.

"What's going on?? In my entire life, I have not seen five instances like this, let alone in the space of 10 days or a tournament," he wrote.

On the eve of the match against India, Australia captain Aaron Finch said the zing bails appeared to need a bigger impact to be dislodged from their grooves.

"The bails seem to be a lot heavier, so it does take a bit of force," he said on Saturday, pointing to similar cases during the Indian Premier League (IPL) Twenty20 competition.

"I've seen it a handful of times now in IPL and Big Bash where the ball rolls back on to the stumps, where the bails traditionally one of them will pop off.

"I think it's just one of those things that you are aware of that when you're on the right side of it, you are aware of it a bit easier than when you're not."

World Cup: Virat Kohli unhappy with 'zing' bails after David Warner reprieve

Australian opener David Warner is meticulously preparing for the tougher battles ahead in the World Cup by using a new device on his bat. It is a sensor that stores important data like backlift angle and maximum bat speed.

ICC had approved the usage of bat sensor back in 2017 but none of the international batsmen have used it in matches.

A Bengaluru based company has introduced its version of sensor cap named 'Bat Sense' which Warner has been using in practice to collate data to counter pacers.&nbsp;

The sensor chip is fixed on the top of bat handle. Till the time batsman is batting, the data generated on the chip gets stored in a mobile app through 'cloud storage'.&nbsp;

The technical data consists of aspects such as power index, maximum bat speed, rotational angle of the wrists, backlift angle, bat start angle (whether the bat is coming straight or from first slip angle).&nbsp;

Warner's bat sensor has revealed some interesting insights about how he is doing. His bat speed is believed to be 79 kmph.

"I am not sure whether Warner would use the bat with sensor in a match situation but he has been using it in practice sessions," Atul Srivastava, whose company has a tie-up with the ICC, told PTI.

The data collected could prove to be useful for professional players as they will have a reference point, said former Test wicketkeeper and cricket analyst Deep Dasgupta.

"Earlier, the coaches would depend on their natural instinct about angle of backlift or bat speed or the distance between the bat and body, impact. I believe if accurate data can help coaches in guiding their players, then why not," said Dasgupta, who himself is associated with the project, told PTI.

At the moment, the bat sensor usage is at a nascent stage where collating data is the primary objective.
"The data that will be available is of primary nature. Once a large chunk of data is collected across a cross-section of players, it can be suitably processed by the coaches. Then players can accordingly change their game as per the available data," said Dasgupta.

As of now, none of the current India players are using the bat sensor, which could well be another game-changer in the near future.&nbsp;

Key battles in India vs Australia Cricket World Cup clash

West Indies captain Jason Holder is playing down his team's traditional rivalry with Australia ahead of the Cricket World Cup match between the sides at Trent Bridge on Thursday.

"It's always been a great rivalry between West Indies and Australia," Holder told reporters on Wednesday.

"I think everybody is expecting a really good contest. We're up for the challenge. I think they're up for the challenge as well. I'm not caught up with the rivalry. It's a matter for us to go into tomorrow's game looking to execute our plans and beat Australia," Holder said.

Both teams won their opening matches of the tournament, West Indies crushing Pakistan by seven wickets at Trent Bridge.

"We obviously had one game here before. We bowled 22 overs in the game. We didn't get a full allotment. But having said that, we've got a little bit of knowledge about the ground, how the wicket plays," Holder said.

Pakistan beat World Cup favourites and hosts England in their second match and Holder is not getting carried away.

"As I said, it's a wide-open tournament," he said. "All 10 teams are capable of lifting the World Cup. That's why we're here, they're the 10 best teams in the world.''

"So I wouldn't get into the games that have been played. I just want to keep moving forward. We've got Australia tomorrow, and that's our next hurdle, and that's what I want to focus on. It's just a matter of playing good cricket on any given day. We want to execute in all three departments. We just want to be as positive as we possibly can be. The intent is something that we spoke about in the dressing room," the Windies captain said.

West Indies captain Jason Holder is playing down his team's traditional rivalry with Australia ahead of the Cricket World Cup match between the sides at Trent Bridge on Thursday. West Indies beat Australia in the first World Cup final in 1975 and although the fortunes of the once all-conquering Caribbean team have declined, the history between the sides should ensure a compelling game. West Indies have had fitness concerns over destructive opening batsman Chris Gayle and all-rounder Andre Russell. Chris was at practice for the last couple of days, so Chris for me is all well and ready to go. Andre will be obviously assessed, and we're very, very hopeful that he'll be fit," Holder said.

World Cup: Windies captain jason Holder plays down Australia rivalry

Justin Langer has hailed the <a href="https://www.wionews.com/sports/steve-waugh-ranks-dangerous-windies-as-world-cups-most-watchable-side-224066">West Indies'</a> "Calypso cricket", admitting they were his heroes when he was growing up as he prepares Australia to face their current battery of fast bowlers.

The two teams, who have won seven out of the 11 World Cups so far between them, meet at Trent Bridge on Thursday after both cruised to comfortable opening victories.&nbsp;

Head coach Langer said defending champions Australia would need to adjust their mindset to take on the <a href="https://www.wionews.com/sports/i-am-a-fast-bowler-thunders-andre-russell-after-startling-pakistan-in-their-world-cup-opener-223332">West Indies quicks and other fast bowlers</a> at the tournament in England and Wales.

"We've probably spent four months thinking and playing against spin bowling," he said on Tuesday.

"We have to adapt to the West Indies no doubt, who have got a number of good, fast bowlers. <a href="https://www.wionews.com/sports/world-cup-south-african-pacer-dale-steyn-ruled-out-of-tournament-due-to-shoulder-injury-224247">South Africa</a> will be the same. England will be the same. Have to adapt our game plan and adapt pretty quickly.&nbsp;Obviously a very dangerous team the way they bat and aggressive bowling, but they've got weaknesses as well and we're playing pretty good cricket," said Langer.

West Indies, who won the first two World Cups, in 1975 and 1979, were the dominant force in the world game for two decades and boasted a succession of world-class fast bowlers and thrilling batsmen.

"When I was a kid it was Calypso cricket, and I think we're seeing plenty of signs of Calypso cricket," Langer said.&nbsp;

"Running and bowling fast. They're not necessarily going to be bowling the same spot every ball, but going to be exciting to watch. They all try to hit sixes most balls so Darren Bravo's probably a little bit more unorthodox.&nbsp;Always exciting playing the West Indies. When I was growing up they were my heroes," added Langer.

Langer described veteran opener Chris Gayle, who scored 50 in the West Indies' seven-wicket victory against Pakistan, as a "brilliant player".

"They got a number of dangerous players. With him&nbsp;on the team&nbsp;they seemed to grow a leg. They take confidence from him. Again, hopefully, don't take too much confidence on Thursday," he said.

Australia were on the end of a thumping last year when England posted a world record one-day international score of 481 for six at Trent Bridge and Langer described the experience as "brutal".

"Had some really good times here at Trent Bridge and last year was a down," he said.

Langer welcomed <a href="https://www.wionews.com/sports/world-cup-2019-english-crowds-stupid-to-boo-david-warner-says-manager-224097">David Warner's</a> innings of 89 not out in Australia's win against Afghanistan, his first official international match since completing a one-year ban for ball tampering.

"You can see the look in his eyes. A lot of people are talking. Looks determined. For him to battle through 90 or 80, whatever it was, and to still be there at the end and get the job done for the team, that's a great sign for us," Langer said.

English crowds are "stupid" to jeer David Warner at the Cricket World Cup as it will only fire him up, the Australian batsman's manager James Erskine has said.

Warner, who has returned to the side following a 12-month ban for ball-tampering, was booed by the crowd during Australia's opening match against Afghanistan in Bristol but struck an <a href="https://www.wionews.com/sports/cricket-world-cup-2019-david-warner-stars-in-australias-rout-of-afghanistan-223509">unbeaten 89 and was named man-of-the-match</a>.

"I am English. Where the Poms are stupid is that it is actually going to encourage him. It will actually help him. The fact of the matter is, you concentrate, he won't want to fail, he got 89," Erskine said in comments published by Fairfax Media.

"They will learn very smartly that they are dealing with someone who has got the powers of concentration and his willpower, it's no different from a Steve Waugh or a Nick Faldo. That's exactly what will happen here," he added.

While former captain <a href="https://www.wionews.com/sports/australian-coach-justin-langer-coach-requests-crowd-not-to-boo-steve-smith-david-warner-223096">Steve Smith</a> and test opener Cameron Bancroft -&nbsp;the other players punished for ball-tampering - have given media interviews about the Cape Town scandal, Warner has declined to comment publicly.

He has dodged media interviews at the World Cup, barring a mandatory comment on-field with the host broadcaster after claiming the man-of-the-match award.

Erskine defended Warner's silence.

"There is no point talking. What's he going to talk about? I think that policy will work ... if he (Warner) goes and gets a ton against England or somebody like that, people will want to a chat to him about his play,''&nbsp;Erskine said.

"As I have said before, these guys (Warner and Smith) have taken a hit for a lot of other people and they paid their fine. They now basically have got to go out and play well and it looks as if they are going to play well," he added.

World Cup 2019: English crowds 'stupid' to boo David Warner, says manager

Defending champions Australia defeated Afghanistan by seven wickets in their campaign opener of <a href="https://www.wionews.com/search?q=cricket+world+cup">Cricket World Cup 2019</a> on Saturday at Bristol’s County Ground.&nbsp;

Openers Aaron Finch and David Warner completed their half-centuries as Australia chased down the target of the 208-run target in 34.5 overs.&nbsp;

Finch scored a total of 66 runs off 49 balls and his innings included 6 fours and 4 sixes before losing his wicket to Gulbadin Naib.&nbsp;

Usman Khawaja, in at number three, scored 15 runs and lost his wicket to Afghan's spin sensation Rashid Khan.&nbsp;

Warner, who returned after a year-long ban, played brilliant innings and scored an unbeaten&nbsp;89 runs.&nbsp;

He was given the player of the match for his performance.&nbsp;

"Need to keep our nerves and look to see through that period. It's a different contrast from the team back then (in 2015). There was more experience at that point but this squad also has great energy in it," said Warner after the match.&nbsp;

Steve Smith, who is also coming after serving a one-year ban, scored 18 runs.&nbsp;

Glenn Maxwell scored the winning runs.&nbsp;
