The cyclone had the coastal districts of Maharashtra from the Arabian Sea with wind speeds of up to 120 kilometres per hour (kmph) on Wednesday afternoon.

Mumbai was on edge as it braced for the cyclone after a gap of 72 years.

The neighbouring coastal districts of Raigad and Palghar bore the brunt of the storm experiencing strong winds, heavy rainfall and raging sea surge.

Tidal waves measuring up to 6-8 feet lashed parts of the coastal areas.

Tin roofs erected on the terraces of residential apartments flew away in some places and several trees and electricity poles were also uprooted.

A 58-year-old man died after a power transformer fell on him while he was rushing home to escape the cyclone fury in Raigad district, while s 65-year-old woman and a 52-year-old man died in house collapse after the tin sheets on the roof were blown in separate incidents in Pune district, officials said.

Mumbaikars heaved a sigh of relief as the cyclone's damage appeared limited to uprooting of trees in some areas that led to vehicles being crushed.

"The system weakened into a cyclonic storm and lay centered at 16.30 hrs near lat 19.0 deg N and Long 73.7 deg E (Pune District) over interior Maharashtra about 100 km east north east of Alibaug, 90 km east of Mumbai (Colaba) and 50 km north northwest of Pune," the IMD said in the statement.

The cyclone brought heavy rain in Colaba and Santacruz in Mumbai with upto 46 mm to 22 mm with wind speeds of 50 kmph and 58 kmp.

Flight operations at the Mumbai airport were suspended in the afternoon as the cyclone approached but resumed later.&nbsp;

Cyclone Nisarga disrupts power lines in Maharashtra; weakens after making landfall in Alibaug

Cyclone Nisarga is fast approaching the northern coast of Maharashtra with a speed of 11 kilometres per hour, according to the India Meteorological Department (IMD). Nisarga will make landfall as 'severe cyclonic storm' close to Alibag, 94 kms south of Mumbai on Wednesday afternoon with a wind speed of 100-110 kmh gusting to 120 kmh.

This is perhaps the first such storm to threaten Mumbai in more than 70 years.

To this end, the Mumbai Police has imposed Section 144 in the city -- which will be in effect till Thursday afternoon.&nbsp;The police has also banned citizens from visiting places like beaches, parks and promenades along the coastline.&nbsp;

Maharashtra and Gujarat have evacuated more than 1,00,000 people from coastal areas, especially those staying in slums and makeshift houses to places of shelter, officials from both the states said.

In Mumbai, authorities shifted 150 patients from newly built makeshift Covid-19 hospital to other hospitals as the new structure was located in low-lying area.

"Cyclone Nisarga is approaching North Maharashtra coast with a speed of 11 kmph. It is about 200 km South-SouthWest of Alibag and about 250 km South-SouthWest of Mumbai at 02:30 am IST of June 3," according to a tweet by the IMD.

The weather forecast agency further said that at 4:30 am the wind speed had increased to 22 kmph at Santacruz in Mumbai. It has also predicted that light to moderate rainfall would take place at most places with isolated heavy falls very likely over coastal Karnataka and Marathawada during the next six hours.

Extremely heavy falls (above 20 centimetres in 24 hours) is also likely at isolated places over North Konkan (Mumbai, Palghar, Thane, Raigad districts) and North Madhya Maharashtra on Wednesday.

After the landfall, the 'severe cyclonic storm' is likely to maintain its cyclonic storm intensity for about six hours while moving north-northeastwards across North Madhya Maharashtra.&nbsp; 
Under its influence, gale wind reaching 60-70 kmph gusting to 80 kmph is very likely to prevail over Pune, Ahmadnagar and 55-65 kmph gusting to 75 kmph adjoining Beed, Nashik and Aurangabad districts of Maharashtra.

The IMD had earlier stated that the Severe Cyclonic Storm is expected to impact the Maharashtra coast by the afternoon/evening of June 3.

In view of impending Cyclone Nisarga, Mumbai Police Commissioner Param Bir Singh has issued prohibitory orders restricting any presence or movement of persons in public places along the coast on Tuesday.

The prohibitory orders will remain in effect from midnight of Tuesday to 12 noon Wednesday, as per the statement.

NDRF Director General SN Pradhan, to this end, said that ten teams were deployed in Maharashtra and 11 in Gujarat. Five more NDRF teams were sent to Gujarat and Maharashtra respectively for joining the ongoing operations.

Nisarga comes close on the heels of Cyclone Amphan which killed more than 100 people when it hit eastern India and Bangladesh in May, flattening villages, destroying farms and leaving millions without electricity.

FLIGHTS CANCELLED OR DELAYED

Keeping the cyclone in consideration, only 19 flights, including 11 departures and eight arrivals, will be operated from the Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport (CSMIA) on Wednesday.

According to GVK MIAL, which manages the CSMIA, the aforementioned flights will be operated by five airlines, including Air Asia India, Air India, IndiGo, GoAir, and SpiceJet.

The authority also cautioned passengers about probable changes in the schedule of the flights due to the cyclone and urged them to check with their respective airliners before leaving for the airport.

IndiGo Airline on Tuesday cancelled 17 flights to and from Mumbai.

"Due to severe cyclonic storm currently moving towards the country`s western coasts, IndiGo has cancelled 17 flights to and from Mumbai. IndiGo will only operate three flights from Mumbai on June 3, 2020," IndiGo said in a statement.

"The airline will operate three flights to Chandigarh, Ranchi and Patna from Mumbai on June 3, 2020," it further said.&nbsp;

All the passengers of the affected domestic flights have been notified."

Vistara also cancelled its flights scheduled to and from Mumbai on June 3 due to the warning of severe storm on the western coast.&nbsp;

"Following the warning of a severe storm that Cyclone Nisarga may cause on the western coast of India, Vistara has cancelled its flights scheduled to and from Mumbai on 3 June 2020. Affected customers are being informed of the cancellations and will be offered alternative flight options. Safety of our customers and staff is most important to us," Vistara spokesperson said in a statement.

Meanwhile, CSMIA convened a meeting with its stakeholders to devise preventive measures to tackle potential adversities accompanied by the cyclone.&nbsp;

CSMIA has undertaken various measures to safeguard the passengers and airlines at the airport.

Preventive checks at different airport functions have been carried out and the airport has ensured that DG sets are in place to provide the uninterrupted power supply. Water pumps have been positioned across the airport to clear water in case of waterlogging.

Furthermore, food and beverage counters will be operational 24x7 at the airport for passengers. These counters will continue to operate the safety measures adopted against ongoing pandemic."

A dedicated team has been placed on standby at the airport to assist in this wary situation. Some of the measures undertaken by the airport include efficient personnel management to account for the possibility that the relieving team might not be able to reach the airport to take over their shift. Logistical supports like vehicles, food and tea/coffee have been arranged," CSMIA said in a statement.

Maharashtra and Gujarat are on pre-cyclone alert as very heavy to extremely heavy rainfall is expected in parts of the states on June 3 and June 4. Fishermen are advised not to venture into the sea for the next few days as it is expected to be very rough. 
 
The NDRF has already deployed 13 teams in Gujarat including 2 kept as reserve and 16 in Maharashtra including 7 teams as a reserve, while one team each was deployed for Daman and Diu and Dadra and Nagar Haveli. NDRF is aiding the state governments for the evacuation of people from low lying coastal areas.

This will be the first time that a cyclone will make landfall on the Maharashtra coast in June since record-keeping began in 1891.

Meanwhile, at 9 pm on Monday, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) had said that the well-marked low-pressure area over South-East and adjoining East-Central Arabian Sea and Lakshadweep area concentrated into a depression and it is very likely to intensify into a deep depression during next 12 hours and intensify further into a cyclonic storm over the East-Central Arabian Sea during the subsequent 24 hours."The depression lays about 310km southwest of Panjim, 570km south-southwest of Mumbai, 800 km south-southwest of Surat. It will cross Harihareshwar (Maharashtra) and Daman coast on the evening of June 3," IMD said.

Meanwhile, reports said 15 teams of National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) have been deployed in Maharashtra to counter the cyclone.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi in a message said: "Took stock of the situation in the wake of cyclone conditions in parts of India’s western coast. Praying for everyone’s well-being. I urge people to take all possible precautions and safety measures."

Officials said that 20,000 people from villages near Gujarat coast are to be evacuated ahead of the cyclone with people living in Valsad and Navsari districts being shifted to safer areas.

Amid reports of the cyclone, reports said &nbsp;13 boats of fishermen from Palghar are still out in the sea after over 570 left with authorities making efforts to get them back.&nbsp;

With Gujarat bracing for the approaching cyclonic storm 'Nisarg', the Valsad and Navsari district administrations have started evacuating nearly 20,000 people from 47 villages located close to the state coastline, officials said on Tuesday.

Besides, in a relief to people living near the shore, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) on Tuesday indicated the cyclone may not make a landfall on the Gujarat coast.

However, it will have an impact in the form of gusty winds coupled with heavy rainfall in the coastal belt, state MeT centre director Jayanta Sarkar said.

As a precautionary measure, the district administrations of Valsad and Navsari have started shifting people living near the coast to safer places.

In all, nearly 20,000 people will be shifted from both the districts.

"We have deployed our teams to shift nearly 10,000 people living in 35 coastal villages. We have already identified shelter homes and started the evacuation process," Valsad Collector R R Raval said.

In adjoining Navsari district also, the administration has initiated the process of shifting some 10,200 people from 12 villages, Collector Ardra Agarwal said.

As per an IMD release, the deep depression over east- central Arabian Sea is currently around 670 km from Surat and it may intensify into a cclonic storm in next six hours.

In the subsequent 12 hours, it will turn into a severe cyclonic storm and "cross north Maharashtra and adjoining south Gujarat coast between Harihareshwar and Daman, close to Alibaug of Maharashtra during the afternoon of June 3, with a maximum sustained wind speed of 100 to 110 kmph," it said.

"As per the present predictions, the cyclone will make a landfall near Alibaug, that is in between north Maharashtra and south Gujarat. Though the cyclone will not cross south Gujarat, it will leave its impact in the form of gusty winds and heavy rainfall in south Gujarat," said Sarkar.
