WION Sports News: Top sports results this week

New Zealand won the toss and elected to bowl against Pakistan in the first of three matches between T20I in Wellington on Monday.

Pakistan is currently under immense pressure as its top batting order was smashed and New Zealand bowlers restricted them at a total of 105 runs.

Tim Southee got his first wicket in the second over and saw off Fakhar Zaman, later he took Mohammad Nawaz's (7) and Faheem Ashraf's (7) wicket in the fourth and fourteenth over respectively.

Besides Tim Southee, Seth Rance also destroyed Pakistani line up by taking three wickets of Umar Amin (0), Hasan Ali (23) and Mohammad Amir (3). Anaru Kitchen got one wicket of Haris Sohail (9).

In the last over, Colin Munro got Babar Azam's wicket.

Babar Azam scored 41 runs for the team and tried to push the run rate before Munro got him out in the hands of Tom Bruce.

Babar found a determined ally in Hasan Ali and together they made 30 runs at a very crucial point but the latter lost his wicket to Seth Rance in the 17th over.

Adding to the destruction, Mitchell Santner out bowled Sarfraz Ahmed and the next ball was caught behind for a golden duck claiming Shadab Khan's wicket that ends Pakistan's every possible hope of resurrection.

Blackcaps are already on a high having just swept the one-day series against Pakistan and are backing themselves to continue that form as they switch to the shortest form of the game.

However, they suffered a setback hours before the match when captain Kane Williamson was withdrawn as a precautionary measure after complaining of a tight thigh.

Stand-in skipper Tim Southee said it was "not a typical" wicket at Westpac Stadium but he opted to bowl "as hopefully, we will get something out of it early on."

New Zealand is resting fast bowlers Trent Boult and Lockie Ferguson for the match.

Pakistan will be without Shoaib Malik who is out of the series after a delayed concussion suffered during the fourth ODI.

The ongoing ODI series between India and South Africa was supposed to be the mother of all cricket clashes as two top-class teams were fighting to be at number one spot.

India had lost the Test series by 1-2 but have performed exceptionally well in the ODI series which is underway.

Men in blue were not in a mood to give up on the limited overs format after disappointing Test series.

They won the first three ODI matches but unfortunately lost the yesterday's rain-hit fourth ODI clash.

Earlier, India won the toss in the fourth ODI at New Wanderers Stadium, Johannesburg and batted first.

They gave a target of 289 runs. The match was halted twice due to lightning and rain eventually, the game was reduced to 28 overs and the revised target was 202 that South Africa achieved easily.

Aiden Markram marked his first win as a captain. Heinrich Klaasen scored maximum runs, (43 runs) and received the man of the match award for playing brave cricket under pressure.

Surprisingly, South African pacer Andile Phehlukwayo hit unbeaten 23 runs off 5 balls with an average of 460.0, that particular masterstroke helped South Africa to with the game.

The South African team was wearing the pink jersey as have taken a pledge to promote and spread the knowledge of breast cancer awareness to help those who are affected by this malady.

This was the sixth time when South Africa played wearing pink jerseys.

The pink colour has been really lucky for the team as they have not lost a single match yet while wearing pink.

South African legacy of winning in 'pink' continues

South Africa defeated India in the 4th ODI match by 5 wickets at New Wanderers Stadium, Johannesburg. Earlier, India won the toss and opted to bat.

India batted first and gave a target of 289 runs. The game was halted twice due to lightning and rain eventually, the game was reduced to 28 overs and the revised target was 202 which South Africa achieved easily.

Aiden Markram marked his first win as a captain.

For India, Rohit Sharma and Shikhar Dhawan opened the game but Rohit again failed to perform as he lost his wicket after scoring 5 odd runs.

On the other hand, Shikhar Dhawan who was playing his 100th ODI was magnificent. He slammed a century and gave a resounding start for the team.

He also became the first Indian to score 100 in the 100th match.

Virat Kohli also played some brilliant shots and scored 75 runs before pushing the ball in the safe hands of Chris Morris.

Ajinkya Rahane, Shreyas Iyer and Hardik Pandya scored 8, 18 and 9 respectively.

MS Dhoni settled the middle batting order and scored 42 unbeaten runs for the team.

4th ODI IND vs SA: South Africa beats India by 5 wickets

The fourth ODI between India and South Africa is set to start and 'Men in blue' will face 'Men in pink' at New Wanderers Stadium, Johannesburg.

India is already leading the six-match series by 3-0 with and will enter the 4th ODI with a high.

The Spin-twins are doing exceptionally well for the team. Kuldeep Yadav and Yuzvendra Chahal have been a key element for India's comfortable victories.

The depth in the batting order has provided India with extra convincing support.

Though opener Rohit Sharma is struggling to regain his form as he failed to score in the previous games.

In-form skipper Virat Kohli has been magnificent. He slammed two centuries in the previous three games and had inspired the team to much-needed victories.

On the other hand, South Africa, arguably dominant unit at home strived hard to perform but the injuries had overshadowed the team as AB de Villiers, Faf du Plessis and Quinton de Kock were ruled out.

If we talk about the pink jersey, out of 5 ODI games South Africa have not lost a single game yet.

Especially AB de Villiers’s record in pink ODIs is remarkable. In the five games, he has scored 450 runs at an average of 112.5.

If we talk about the weather, some showers are expected in the morning, but it won't hamper the game as the match is set to start at 4:30.

4th ODI: 'Men in blue' vs 'men in pink'

The scoreline is rather hard to believe at present. The visiting Indian side leading 3-0 in the six-match ODI series against an arguably dominant South African unit at home.

This was supposed to be the mother of all ODI battles. The clash between the No. 1 and No. 2 ODI sides in the world. The greatest heavyweights of the limited overs format having a go at each other and having an epic contest for the crowds to savour. That wasn’t to be, however.

South Africa looks like a pale shadow of what they used to be once. Their batting has been shambolic and bowling has been wayward. And without the services of star batsmen like AB de Villiers and Faf Du Plessis, South Africa has simply not been able to maintain its standards.

Old issues against wrist spin have resurfaced and there has been a real lack of application from the players in fighting it out. This raises serious questions about the future of this South African ODI outfit and makes one wonder how well they are prepared for their ‘Mission 2019’.

As India take on South Africa in the fourth ODI at the Wanderers, the hosts would be hoping for a turnaround in their fortunes. The return of star batsman AB de Villiers after an injury layoff will certainly bolster their prospects a bit.

After all, he is their greatest match-winner and averages 100.85 from 11 matches at this ground. This is also a Pink ODI and the South Africans would be seen donning the pink jersey in an ODI match again. Ever since this tradition was started five years ago, South Africa has been undefeatable in pink.

They have played five ODIs in pink and have not lost a single game as yet. History, however, would be of little help if the hosts continue to play they have been over the last few days.

For India, despite their winning momentum, there are causes of concern. Rohit Sharma seems to have fallen into his inconsistency pattern again and the lower middle-order looks fragile. Ajinkya Rahane, MS Dhoni, Hardik Pandya and Kedar Jadhav have to do more so that the burden on Virat Kohli and Shikhar Dhawan is reduced a bit.

India’s bowlers, though, have been absolutely brilliant and Kohli would need them to continue in the same vein. The seamers have not allowed the batsmen to get away to rollicking starts and then the wrist spinners - Yuzvendra Chahal and Kuldeep Yadav – have taken over.

The two have spun such a vicious web over the South African batsmen that they do not how to untangle themselves out of it. Perhaps with De Villiers coming back, they will finally have some relief.

There is no denying, however, that despite the return of AB de Villiers, India start as favourites in the fourth ODI. They have displayed a brand of aggressive and professional cricket and it will not be surprising if they go on to subdue South Africa again and get a series-clinching win here.

Opinion: Can the return of AB de Villiers turn the tide for South Africa?

Prevailing cross- border tension may have restricted Indo-Pak bilateral cricketing ties but Shahid Afridi loves to put across a point firmly -- his "cordial relation" with India captain Virat Kohli cannot and will not be defined by political situation.

"My relationship with Virat is not dictated by political situation. Virat is a fantastic human being and an ambassador of cricket for his country, just like I am for my country," Afridi told PTI during an interaction on the sidelines of the St Moritz Ice Cricket Tournament.

"He (Kohli) has always shown a lot of respect and has even gone out of his way to present a signed jersey for my foundation (Shahid Afridi Foundation)," he added.
Afridi's foundation has been working in providing clean and safe drinking water for the economically weaker sections of society.

"There is a lot of warmth and fellow-feeling whenever I have spoken to Virat. It's not that we get a chance to speak a lot but from time to time, he would drop in a message and I would do the same. I congratulated him recently when I came to know the he was getting married.

"I believe as cricketers we can set examples of how relationship between individuals can be a template for relationship between countries. I think after Pakistan, the two countries where I have received most love and respect are India and Australia," said the former Pakistan skipper.

For someone, who was a maverick during his international career, Afridi loves Kohli's aggression and believes that supporting juniors in crisis situations has also helped him in earning respect from youngsters.

"Virat is doing a brilliant job. I have no problem with aggression if it is a controlled one. And Virat's character is different from Mahendra Singh Dhoni, who was a composed individual.

"Now suddenly, you cannot change the inherent nature of a person. Virat's greatest asset is that he can take the team along," Afridi observed.

Asked to compare Kohli with Pakistan captain Sarfraz Khan, Afridi said: "Sarfraz is still new to the job and he will only get better along the way. The only thing I don't like is that media running down players during their rough times.

"As long as you are winning, everything is fine and you lose a game and all hell breaks loose. That is grossly unfair. We should not overlook someone's past achievements just because he is going through a bad patch," said the cricketer who has been loved and criticised in equal measure.

During the couple of days of Ice Cricket at St Moritz tournament, Afridi at times even beat Virender Sehwag in terms of popularity thanks to the presence of a larger number of expatriate Pakistani fans, who had thronged St Moritz.

The moment he entered the playing area wearing the orange jumper, St Moritz turned into a 'Lala Land' as everyone wanted a piece of their beloved 'Lala', as Pakistani fans affectionately call Afridi.

Afridi was a different man at different times.

He autographed the posters, even a Pakistan Tehreek-e- Insaf flag, obliged all the selfie seekers, seemed a tad irritated with multiple one-on-one interview requests, took his wife and youngest daughter out for a walk down the lake and did not even give a second glance at a young Pakistani woman, who in front of everyone shouted "Lala aapse kabhi alag se mil sakti hoon (Can I meet you somewhere else?)."

And yes, he played cricket too and tried to hit out as he would do often during his green jersey days. And the result was more often than not his downfall. It happened the same way but no one cared.

'My relationship with Virat is not dictated by political situation. Virat is a fantastic human being and an ambassador of cricket for his country, just like I am for my country,' Afridi told said

Shikhar Dhawan: First Indian to score 100 in 100th ODI match

India vs South Africa live up to its billing - unpredictable and exciting. Everything in the last four days from the pitch, bowling and Pandya's batting had all the ingredients of a delicious curry, just that it was enjoyed more by the hosts than the visitors.

It was a match full of drama from the first morning when South Africa crashed to 12 for three losing Elgar, Markram and Amla cheaply after choosing to bat on a seaming pitch but they came back magnificently and won the game. Now they lead the series 1-0.

India was definitely outplayed by the South Africans. Though Indian bowlers started the game quite well but that was not enough. Even after creating pressure on the first half of Day 1, Indian pacers gave away 50-60 extra runs. A fact acknowledged by Bhunveshwar Kumar later.

Counter-attacking batting by De Villiers and Du Plessis enabled South Africa to set up a competitive 286 in their first innings.

The first innings for India was extremely disappointing after the batsmen fell without a fight, except India's new all-rounder Hardik Pandya who stood tall amid the ruins.

Pandya's invaluable 93 runs with 14 hits to the boundary and one six - it was was a stand-out performance. However, Vernon Philander, Dale Steyn, Morne Morkel and Kagiso Rabada destroyed India's pride.

In the second innings too, Indian bowlers did their bit by holding the Proteas to 130 ensuring India had a target of 208 but this time too the batters disappointed and India surrendered the match, losing by 72 runs.

Kohli's decision of selecting Rohit Sharma ahead of Ajinkya Rahane remains questionable.

No doubt Rohit's performance in ODI and other limited over format is outstanding, but in South Africa, conditions are totally different where the pitch offers swing and bowlers hold sway.

Rohit has played 27 innings in 14 matches on foreign soil and has scored just 653 runs at an average of 25.12, on the other hand, in the matches played in India, his average is a stupendous 65.17.

Clearly, Rohit along with Virat need to come to the party if India wants to hit back in the next Test at Centurion in Gauteng next week.

Opinion: Rohit Sharma is rockstar at home, flop star abroad

The fourth One Day International match between India and South Africa is underway of a six-match series between the two top-class cricket teams of the world.

India is already leading the series with 3-0 and looking forward to winning the ODI series to regain number one ICC spot.

India had a very disappointing Test series when they lost it to the Proteas by 1-2 but in the limited overs format, India has salvaged the cricketing pride and behaving like a number one team, which they actually are.

On the other hand, South Africa an arguably dominant team at home has failed to produce results as the squad has been overshadowed by series of injuries firstly it was AB de Villiers then Faf du Plessis and also wicketkeeper-batsman Quinton de Kock.

Now, AB has marked his entry in the fourth ODI and will play for the remaining matches. It is expected that he will bring a new boost to the bland squad.

Apart from AB's return, there is one more thing that is very different for the Proteas and that is the Pink jersey.

This is the sixth time when South Africa will play wearing pink jerseys.

The pink colour has been really lucky for the team as they have not lost a single match yet while wearing pink.

Apart from luck and fate, the change in the colour of jersey marks a significant step that the squad has taken up which is "breast cancer awareness."

Here is why South African team is playing in pink

The International Cricket Council on Friday appointed PepsiCo Chairman and CEO Indra Nooyi as the ICC board`s first independent female director.

Nooyi will join the world cricket governing body in June 2018 to align with the term of the ICC Independent Chairman, following the unanimous confirmation of her appointment.

The introduction of an Independent Director, who must be female, was approved by the ICC Full Council in June 2017 as part of wide-ranging constitutional change aimed at improving the global governance of the sport.

Reflecting on Nooyi's appointment, ICC Chairman Shashank Manohar said, "We are delighted to welcome Indra to the ICC. Adding another independent director - particularly a female - is such an important step forward in improving our governance.

To have someone of Indra`s calibre is fantastic news for the global game - she is frequently recognized as one of the most influential people in business today, running one of the world`s biggest corporations."

"We undertook a global search looking for the right candidate who would complement the existing skills and experience already on our Board. A cricket enthusiast with experience in the commercial sector and independent of the ICC, any Member or state or associated organization were the primary criteria and in Indra, we have found an exceptional new colleague and we look forward to working with her in the future.

"Indra Nooyi said, "I love the game of cricket. I played it as a teenager and in college, and to this day, I cherish the lessons the game taught me about teamwork, integrity, respect, and healthy competition. I am thrilled to join the ICC as the first person to be appointed to this role. And I look forward to working with my colleagues on the board, ICC`s incredible partners, and cricketers around the world to grow our sport responsibly and give our fans a new reason to follow every ball and shot.

"The Independent Director will be appointed for a two-year term although she may be re-appointed for two further terms with a maximum six-year consecutive period of service.

ICC appoints Indra Nooyi as its first independent female director

The South African side has got some relief as their star batsman AB de Villiers will resume from the fourth ODI against India in a 6 match ODI series.

ABD missed the first three matches because of a finger injury suffered in the third Test against the same opponents last month.

The Proteas were struggling in the ODI series as their players were affected by injury. Although, they played exceptionally well against India in the Test match to win the series by 2-1. The momentum has been lost in the limited overs format.

AB de Villiers was absent from the 1st ODI match, Faf du Plessis ruled out after playing the 1st ODI match and out Quinton de Kock still recovering as he suffered a wrist injury in the 2nd ODI.

India had marked a comfortable win in the previous matches and have taken an unescapable lead 3-0 lead.

The squad, especially the bowling attack is in terrific form. South Africa’s batsmen have struggled, particularly against India’s spinners especially Kuldeep Yadav and Chahal.

India won the first ODI at Durban by six wickets, the second ODI by nine wickets and third match won by a massive 124 runs.

After winning the last match, India temporarily retained the top ICC ODI spot and looking forward to winning the ODI series after the unfortunate Test loss.

The return of De Villiers is the only change to a squad weakened by injuries to regular captain Faf du Plessis and wicketkeeper-batsman Quinton de Kock.

Squad (TBC):

South African:

Aiden Markram (captain), Hashim Amla, Farhaan Behardien, AB de Villiers, JP Duminy, Imran Tahir, Heinrich Klaasen (wkt), David Miller, Morne Morkel, Chris Morris, Lungi Ngidi, Andile Phehlukwayo, Kagiso Rabada, Tabraiz Shamsi, Khaya Zondo.

Squad (TBC): South African: Aiden Markram (captain), Hashim Amla, Farhaan Behardien, AB de Villiers, JP Duminy, Imran Tahir, Heinrich Klaasen (wkt), David Miller, Morne Morkel, Chris Morris, Lungi Ngidi, Andile Phehlukwayo, Kagiso Rabada, Tabraiz Shamsi, Khaya Zondo.

India have taken an unassailable 2-0 lead in the series, which is part of the ICC Women's Championship.

Mandhana started from where she left in the first game and smashed 135 off just 129 balls to form the base for India's 302 for three.

She hit 14 boundaries and a six en route to her century. Incidentally, this is Mandhana's second ODI century against South Africa.

Mandhana had earlier made a 98-ball 84 in India's 88-run win over South Africa in the first ODI.

Besides Mandhana, Harmanpreet Kaur (55 not out) and Veda Krishnamurthy (51 not out) contributed to India's total.

Opener Punam Raut (20) and skipper Mithali Raj (20) also got starts but failed to prolong their stay at the crease.

All the South Africa bowlers looked helpless in front of the Indian batswomen as they could just manage to take three wickets with Sune Luus registering best figures of one for 31.

Just like the first ODI, Indian bowlers too were clinical in their approach, bowling out South Africa for just 124 runs in 30.5 overs to register yet another massive win.

Leg-spinner Poonam Yadav excelled with the ball for India with figures of four for 24, while left-arm spinner Rajeshwari Gayakwad (2/14) and offie Deepti Sharma (2/34) shared four victims between them.

India's veteran pacer Jhulan Goswami also added another feather to her illustrious cap today by becoming the first female cricketer to take 200 ODI wickets.

The 35-year-old Goswami, playing her 166th ODI, achieved the feat when she dismissed opener Laura Wolvaardt for her 200th scalp.

South Africa's struggle against the Indian attack can be gauged from the fact that only two of their batswomen could manage double-digit scores.

Opener Lizelle Lee held the fort single-handedly from one end with a 75-ball 73 but she did not get the desired support from her teammates.

The only other South African batswoman to have reached double-digit score was Marizanne Kapp, who remained unbeaten on 17.

The disgraced former Pakistan captain Salman Butt has arrived in Bangladesh to play his first full-fledged competition outside his homeland since serving a five-year ban for spot-fixing, an official said Tuesday.

He was cleared by the Pakistan Cricket Board to play in the latest edition of the Dhaka Premier League, a popular Bangladesh club franchise which runs until March 20.

Butt has committed to a full season for local giants Mohammedan Sporting Club, a club captained by Bangladesh all-rounder Shakib Al Hasan.

The former Pakistan skipper is expected to make his debut against Brothers Union on Wednesday.

Mohammedan official Wasim Khan said the club was looking for a left-handed opener and Butt "easily fit" the profile, adding they were not concerned about his past.

"It happened long, long ago. He already served out his ban," he said.

"We don't think it should be an issue now. We have seen him scoring runs and that is important to us."

Butt was captain of Pakistan when fast bowlers Mohammad Asif and Mohammad Amir delivered deliberate no-balls during a Test match against England at Lord's in August 2010.

The trio admitted to working with a bookmaker and served time in prison in England before being suspended for a minimum five years by the International Cricket Council.

The ban ended on September 1, 2015.

Amir has since returned to international cricket but Butt and Asif's careers were limited to Pakistan's domestic competition.

Butt was allowed to play two matches in a Twenty20 competition in the United Arab Emirates in January -- one controversial match in that event is under investigation by the ICC Anti-Corruption Unit -- before being cleared to play in Bangladesh.

Dhaka Premier League is a 50-over tournament featuring many retired international players including Pakistan's Wasim Akram and Shahid Afridi, Sri Lanka's Arjuna Ranatunga and Sanath Jayasuriya, India's Ajay Jadeja and England's Neil Fairbrother.

Power hitters Chris Lynn and Glenn Maxwell propelled Australia to a convincing seven-wicket victory over New Zealand in the first tri-series Twenty20 match at the Sydney Cricket Ground on Saturday.

Lynn (44 runs from 33 balls) and Maxwell (40 not out from 24 balls) shared in a scorching 77-run stand from just 53 balls to steer Australia to the rain-reduced total of 95 from 15 overs with 21 balls to spare.

Despite a top-order wobble, in which captain David Warner and the debutant D'Arcy Short fell inside the first three overs, the belligerent power of Lynn and Maxwell swamped the Kiwi bowling attack.

"We haven't had a lot of success in T20 cricket and to get a win at the start of the tri-series is very good for us and builds some confidence within the team," Maxwell said.

"It could have gone either way with two wickets down in the early power play and we were able to still play positively and play to our strengths."

Australia's victory was earlier set up by towering paceman Billy Stanlake whose fierce pace justified Warner's decision to bowl first after winning the toss, as he wrecked New Zealand's top order with three wickets in the space of his first eight balls.

Stanlake startled Colin Munro with his high bounce for debutant wicketkeeper Alex Carey to race out to point to complete the catch.

Martin Guptill was then flummoxed next ball by a perfect-length seamer that flicked the top of off stump.

Stanlake narrowly missed his hat-trick as Tom Bruce clipped an attempted yorker through the leg side for three.

"I don't want to put a ceiling on how fast I can bowl," Stanlake told Channel Nine.

"I want to push harder each year and hopefully I can keep doing that as my body matures."

Andrew Tye claimed four wickets as Australia restricted New Zealand to a below-par 117 for nine off their 20 overs.

Tye mopped up the Kiwi tail to finish with four wickets for 23 while towering paceman Stanlake claimed three wickets inside the powerplay to dismantle the Kiwis' top order.

Australia had New Zealand at 60 for five before Colin de Grandhomme hit an unbeaten 38 from 24 balls with three sixes and a four.

De Grandhomme launched two massive sixes off leg-spinner Adam Zampa with the Black Caps managing just four sixes in the entire innings.

Stanlake, who has had a storming Big Bash League season for the Adelaide Strikers, underlined why he is one of the hottest prospects in the country and has been locked up on a Cricket Australia central contract.

Tye's first wicket owed much to Warner's catch, running back to make the grab and remove Kiwi captain Kane Williamson for eight from 21 balls.

Australia plays England in the second match of the tri-series in Hobart on Wednesday.

Amitabh Bachchan, Shah Rukh Khan congratulate Under 19 Cricket team for historic win

India U-19 coach Rahul Dravid is confident that it won't just be "one memory" that would define this talented bunch of cricketers as a bigger and more challenging journey awaits them.

"It's a memory they'll cherish for a long time and hopefully it's not a memory that defines them and they will have a lot more bigger and better memories as they go on ahead in their careers," coach Dravid said after India's fourth ICC U-19 World Cup title.

Dravid spoke about the effort that the entire batch put on for the last 14 month, which bore fruit.

"I am really proud of the boys, proud of the effort that they have put in and proud of the support staff as well. I think the effort we have put in over the last 14 months have been sensational. They really deserved this, couldn't be really happier and proud for this bunch of boys," the legendary batsman said.

He was always aware that the since this was an U-19 team, the spotlight will always be on him but as usual he was magnanimous in praising the entire support staff comprising of fielding coach Abhay Sharma, bowling coach Paras Mhambrey to name a few.

"Coaching this team, I tend to get a lot of attention, but it is really about the quality of support staff that we have had, there have been seven or eight of us, who have been together for the last 14 months. The effort they put in was incredible," he said.

"I am proud to be a part of their (support staff) team and see it as that. We try and do what's best for the kids and hopefully they can put in the performances on the field and they have certainly done that in this tournament."

On cloud nine after lifting the trophy, India skipper Prithvi Shaw also credited the team, support staff and singled out Dravid for special mention.

"Can't express what I'm feeling right now, really proud. All credit to our support staff for really supporting us for the last two years. Rahul sir himself is a legend, 'The Wall' as we all know him.

"Full credit to our coaching staff. When you have two guys (Dravid and Paras Mhambrey), who have played international cricket, it gives you great insights," Shaw said about their coach.
He was all praise for centurion Manjot Kalra.

"It was a crucial hundred from Manjot. (Shubman) Gill was batting so well before he got out. Both our pacers -- Kamlesh (Nagarkoti) and Shivam Mavi, have been executing things so well through the tournament. It's been wonderful playing matches here."

Despite losing the final, Australian skipper Jason Sangha said he was proud of his team for the way they performed throughout the tournament.

"Don't know what to say at the moment. Proud of the guys to get this far in the tournament. Best thing about today was guys tried to grind it. As a captain, you can't complain when everyone's giving 110 per cent," Sangha said.
Sangha, however, admitted that they were completely outplayed by India in the final.

"Full credit to India. They played very well. Best of luck for the guys for the IPL. Good for their supporters who came out today."

Shubman Gill, who was adjudged the Man of the Tournament for his 372 runs, said: "I am really proud of my team. We were fortunate enough to have Rahul sir as our coach. He was just telling me to express my game and keep it on the ground.

"Had a good time here. It's been very exciting for me. Hope to do well in IPL also."

Kalra was awarded the Man of the Match after he blasted an unbeaten 101 off 102 balls to steer India to a eight-wicket win.

He said: "Great feeling. Enjoyed a lot. Conditions were very good. It was a flat wicket to bat on. In the team, it's been a great environment."

Left-arm spinner Abhishek Sharma, who took six wickets in the series, said: "Obviously, we have dreamt of this from last year. We had few plans and we stuck to it. It's always grateful to be part of this team. I can't explain the feeling. We'll celebrate this night - best night of our lives."

His teammate Riyan Parag described it as an amazing feeling to come up trumps in a tough match.

"It's just amazing. I was thinking I wouldn't bat and I proved myself right. Just wanted Manjot to get to his century. I thought it'd be a tough match. It was tough, but we made it look easy. It (pitch) was good for batsmen as well as the bowlers," he said.

India seamer Ishan Porel praised the bowlers for putting up a great effort in the tournament.

"I'm feeling on top of the world. Credit goes to support staff and team. A competitive effort. Got lots of messages from India. I can only say that our bowlers have been fantastic all through the tournament. It's a team effort," he said.

India U-19 coach Rahul Dravid is confident that it won't just be 'one memory' that would define this talented bunch of cricketers as a bigger and more challenging journey awaits them

We try and do what's best for the kids and hopefully they can put in the performances on the field and they have certainly done that in this tournament." On cloud nine after lifting the trophy, India skipper Prithvi Shaw also credited the team, support staff and singled out Dravid for special mention. It's been wonderful playing matches here." Despite losing the final, Australian skipper Jason Sangha said he was proud of his team for the way they performed throughout the tournament. Good for their supporters who came out today." Shubman Gill, who was adjudged the Man of the Tournament for his 372 runs, said: "I am really proud of my team. We were fortunate enough to have Rahul sir as our coach. He was just telling me to express my game and keep it on the ground. "Had a good time here. It's been very exciting for me. Hope to do well in IPL also." Kalra was awarded the Man of the Match after he blasted an unbeaten 101 off 102 balls to steer India to a eight-wicket win. He said: "Great feeling. Enjoyed a lot. U-19 World Cup final: India bowl out Australia for 216

Captain Virat Kohli further enhanced his reputation as a 'chase master' as he smashed his 33rd hundred to lead India to a six-wicket victory over South Africa in the first cricket one-dayer here on Thursday.

Kohli struck 112 off 119 balls with the help of 10 boundaries and put on 189 runs for the third wicket with Ajinkya Rahane (79 runs of 86 balls) as India chased down the target of 270 with 4.3 overs to spare.

It was the highest stand for India in South Africa, while Kohli notched up his 20th hundred in a run-chase, out of which 18 have been successfully converted to victories.

After scoring freely all across the world, this was Kohli's first ODI hundred on South African soil.

Also, this was India's first ODI win against South Africa at Durban, and only their sixth overall in bilateral engagements here since 1992-93.

India got off to a quick start with Rohit Sharma (20) and Shikhar Dhawan (35) adding 33 for the opening wicket. Rohit was looking to play his strokes but miscued one off Morne Morkel (1/35) in the seventh over and was out caught.

Dhawan and Kohli then added 34 runs for the second wicket and the duo were looking good to take advantage of South Africa's spinners, when the former was run-out.

Kohli took off for a quick single in the 13th over but Dhawan was late in responding having taken strike and was run-out by Aiden Markram's direct throw.

Kohli and Rahane came together thereafter and did not give the Proteas a sniff. Imran Tahir (0/51) was duly taken for runs, while JP Duminy (0/16) and Markram (0/20) had no impact in their short spells.

The most vital aspect of this partnership was the running between wickets. The duo looked to cut down on errors, calling loud and clear. They brought their 100-stand off 112 balls.

Rahane brought up his half-century off 60 balls as their partnership crossed 150 off only 154 balls. India reached 200 in the 36th over.

Kohli then celebrated his maiden hundred on South African soil in style, reaching there off 105 balls. In doing so, he equalled Sourav Ganguly's record of most ODI hundreds as Indian captain. Both now have 11 centuries, with Kohli reaching the milestone in 41 innings as compared to Ganguly's 142 innings.

Rahane was out caught in the 43rd over, while Kohli's innings ended three overs later. He walked off to a rousing reception from the Durban faithful even as the home side were subjected to a demoralizing defeat.

This was after India's leg-spin twins Kuldeep Yadav and Yuzvendra Chahal shared 5 wickets between them as South Africa were restricted to 269/8.

Yadav took 3/34 and Chahal returned 2/45 as the duo excelled in their first proper overseas outing, underlining the team management's faith in leg spin since July last year.

Proteas' skipper Faf du Plessis (120 runs, 112 balls, 11 fours, 2 sixes) scored his ninth ODI hundred after South Africa's top-order collapse. The hosts lost 4 wickets for 51 runs before du Plessis and Chris Morris (37) rescued them with 74-run partnership for the sixth wicket.

Hashim Amla (16) and Quinton de Kock (34) got off to a watchful start. The latter, in particular, took his time for he had been enduring a poor run of form. At the other end, Amla looked in good nick and was scoring at a strike-rate of 90-plus.

They put on 30 runs for the opening wicket before Jasprit Bumrah (1/56) struck in the 8th over. He trapped Amla plumb lbw, albeit was lucky to have his front-foot only millimetres behind the line.

Just before this, India had a major injury scare when Virat Kohli hurt his knee while fielding in the seventh over. He struggled with his right leg for a while thereafter, and even went off to the Indian dugout to get attention from the physiotherapist.

South Africa scored 49/1 in the first 10 overs even as Hardik Pandya (0/41) came on to bowl first-change. More importantly though, Kohli went off the field -- this time to the dressing room to get further treatment -- in this interim as the knee niggle continued to bother him.

Meanwhile, du Plessis began his innings in attacking fashion. He put on 53 runs off 46 balls with de Kock for the second wicket. India had brought on spin from the 11th over itself as Chahal exerted control over proceedings. However, the Proteas' batsmen attacked Pandya and he was expensive in his first spell.

Chahal trapped de Kock lbw in the 15th over, and the batsman walked without bothering for a review. Had he opted for the referral, he would have survived. Du Plessis, alternately, would have been given out lbw on 18 if India had opted for DRS at the end of the 13th over.

The spinners took quick wickets thereafter and did not allow South Africa's partnerships to settle even as 100 came up in the 21st over. Aiden Markram (9) was caught off Chahal shortly after.

Then Yadav got into the act. He bowled JP Duminy (12) with one that kept low, whilst foxing David Miller (7) into a false shot as Kohli completed a smart forward-diving catch at short extra-cover.

Du Plessis reached his half-century off 54 balls and brought up his 50-partnership with Morris off 57 balls. South Africa recovered to reach 200/5 at the end of 40 overs.

Yadav returned for a final spell to bowl Morris in the 41st over. Du Plessis though stood tall and added 56 runs for the seventh wicket with Andile Phehlukwayo (26 not out). In doing so, he brought up his century off 101 balls.
