Tahir also became the oldest player to win a T20 title, surpassing India's MS Dhoni and Pakistan's Misbah-ul-Haq. Amazon Warriors beat Trinbago Knight Riders for their maiden CPL title on September 25.

Tahir won the CPL 2023 aged 44 years and 181 days while Dhoni won the IPL 2023 aged 41 years 325 days and Misbah-ul-Haq won the Pakistan Super League (PSL) in 2016 aged 41 years and 271 days.

After the tournament, Tahir also thanked Indian spinner Ravichandran Ashwin for 'predicting that Guyana will win the title this year.' Tahir also made sure that he thanked everyone who joked about them winning the title ahead of the tournament.

"I thought it did exactly what I wanted it to do (laughs). Unfortunately, Kieron didn't quite see it that way, but look it is tough," Russell said before the start of the Barbados leg of the CPL.&nbsp;

“I'm sure the captain next to me [Rovman Powell, Barbados Royals] would agree. If you have three overs where you effectively have the penalty, it does make a difference. The reason we've done it is to just speed up the pace of play. I know IPL games go well over four hours, which is just too long," Russell noted.

Echoing what this red-card rule is meant to change in T20 cricket, Russell shared a conversation with a fan sitting in the stands during one of the games. Mentioning that a fan had to leave the game early to catch his ferry because it took longer for the game to end, precisely the last over, which took 12 minutes to get completed, Russell said that is unacceptable.&nbsp;

"I sat next to someone in the stands during that game on Sunday, and he had to get a ferry back to Nevis, and he had to leave the game early because of the amount of time it took to bowl those last few overs," Russell said. "So, the last over was bowled in 12 minutes, which, again, is not acceptable. So, it has a knock-on effect.

<h2>‘Doing it for the fans'</h2>

T20 cricket is fast-paced, glittering, brings excitement and is for the fans to enjoy the crispier version of the game. Speaking on the same lines, Russell said all these efforts are just for the spectators.

"We're doing it for the fans - that's really the reason for doing it. I certainly don't mind it to change. If you actually look at the overall timings each game is 17 minutes quicker than it was last year. So, from that point of view, it's been a success, and it's just unfortunate that Trinidad got caught up in it, but everyone has signed up for the rules. So, I'm happy with where we are at right now," he added.

<h3>What are the slow-over-rate penalties?</h3>

If the bowling team is behind the required rate at the start of the 18th over, an additional fielder must enter the 30-yard circle with five players inside.&nbsp;

If the team is behind the rate at the start of the 19th over, two additional fielders must enter the fielding circle for six players to be inside.

In case the bowling team is behind the rate at the start of the final over, the penalty gets harsher as the team will lose a player from the field, selected by the captain, and also have six players inside the circle.

Besides, the batting team must ensure to keep the game moving. After a first and final warning from the umpires, the batting team will be slapped with a five-run penalty for each instance of time wasting.&nbsp;

Rayudu had a decorative IPL career and is the joint-most successful player in the history of the competition. Alongside Mumbai Indians skipper Rohit Sharma, Rayudu won six Indian Premier League (IPL) titles. He was part of the CSK side that won the IPL titles in 2018, 2021 and 2023. He retired from the IPL after the 2023 season where CSK got the better of then-defending champions Gujarat Titans (GT) at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad.

The new rules from CPL involve fielding restrictions and even a red card - sending a player off the field! Yes, you heard it right folks. If the fielding teams fail to start the final over by the given time limit in CPL 2023 then a player will be sent off the field, leaving them with only 10 players. The captain of the fielding team, however, will have the final say on who's going to leave the field.

Speaking on the issue and penalties, Michael Hall, the CPL's tournament operations director, said in a statement, "We have been disappointed that our T20 games have been getting longer and longer each year, and we want to do what we can to arrest this trend."

"It is the duty of those involved in cricket to ensure that the game keeps moving and we have sensitised both the franchises and our match officials to this duty ahead of the tournament. Our hope is that these in-game penalties are not needed, but we believe they are proportionate and necessary," he added.

Talking about the penalties, both the fielding and batting teams will have the onus to keep the game going and failing to do so will attract penalties.

At the start of each innings, 85 minutes will be awarded to the fielding team to complete the 20 overs which translates to 4 minutes 15 seconds to complete each over on average. The third umpire will keep an eye on the clock. The on-field umpires will keep the fielding captain informed about the time left after each over. The penalties will kick in if the fielding team fails to start the last three overs of the innings on time, individually.

As per the CPL rules, the 17th over must be completed by 72 minutes and 15 seconds, the 18th by 76 minutes and 30 seconds, and the 19th by 80 minutes and 45 seconds. If the fielding team fails to meet these deadlines, below are the penalties it'll face:

The league statement also added that the crowd and TV audience will also be informed about the timings and how far the fielding team is in terms of over rate via the use of graphics.

"Over rates will be monitored by the third umpire and communicated to the captains via on-field umpires at the end of every over, as well as to the crowd and TV audience, with graphics showing how far they are behind (or ahead of) the over rate," the statement read.

As per the 85-minutes-per-innings rule in the shortest format, the 17th over of the innings must be done by 72 minutes and 15 seconds, and the 18th by 76 minutes and 30 seconds. The penultimate over must be completed by 80 minutes and 45 seconds, and the final over – the 20th, must be bowled within 85 minutes.

Any team finishing their quota of 20 overs over this period (which has become a trend with T20 games getting longer with each passing year) will get punished.

"We have been disappointed that our T20 games have been getting longer and longer each year, and we want to do what we can to arrest this trend," Michael Hall, the CPL's tournament operations director, said in a statement on the subject.&nbsp;

"It is the duty of those involved in cricket to ensure that the game keeps moving, and we have sensitised both the franchises and our match officials to this duty ahead of the tournament. Our hope is that these in-game penalties are not needed, but we believe they are proportionate and necessary."

<h2>What are the new rules?</h2>

As per CPL, here are the new rules relating slow over-rate -

<ul>
	<li>If behind the required over rate at the start of the 18th over, one additional player must enter the fielding circle - for a total of five players inside the circle</li>
	<li>If behind the rate at the start of the 19th over, two additional fielders must enter the fielding circle - for a total of six inside the circle</li>
	<li>If behind the rate at the start of the final over, teams will lose a player from the field - selected by the captain - and have six inside the fielding circle</li>
	<li>There will also be an onus on batting teams to keep the game moving. After a first and final warning from the umpires, the batting team will be slapped with a five-run penalty for each instance of time wasting.</li>
</ul>

Meanwhile, the men's CPL 2023 starts on August 17 with Jamaica Tallawahs facing St Lucia Kings in Gros Islet, and the women's event will start on August 31 with a game between Barbados Royals and Guyana Amazon Warriors in Barbados.

Red card for slow over-rates? CPL set to introduce new rule to ensure duration of T20 games

Indian Premier League (IPL) cult hero Ambati Rayudu has joined St Kitts &amp; Nevis Patriots for the upcoming season of the Caribbean Premier League (CPL) on Friday, August 11. Rayudu, winner of six Indian Premier League (IPL) titles recently announced his retirement from all forms of the game, but will play the role of marquee player in the CPL. Rayudu was last seen in action during the IPL 2023 final when he won the title against Gujarat Titans in Ahmedabad.

<h2>Rayudu makes big move</h2>

In a sensational development, the 37-year-old could become the second player to play in the CPL after veteran star Pravin Tambe who represented Trinbago Knight Riders in 2020. However, the player still requires the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) approval to play in the league. Earlier, he had to withdraw from the inaugural edition of the Major League Cricket (MLC) due to a BCCI ruling.

"I'm really excited to be joining the St Kitts &amp; Nevis Patriots. I look forward to having a positive contribution to the team in the upcoming CPL 2023," Rayudu said.

BCCI's proposal to introduce a one-year cooling-off period for retired Indian players before they can participate in overseas franchise leagues was the major stumbling block for Rayudu playing in the MLC. However, it is expected that this won’t be an issue during the CPL and Rayudu will be free to join St Kitts &amp; Nevis Patriots. The former Mumbai Indians star has tons of experience in the shorter format, having delivered for all franchises he has played. With six IPL titles, he is the most successful player in the history of the IPL along with Rohit Sharma.
